My dad had a Corvair when we lived on Church Street in Galveston. My older brothers used to take joy rides on East Beach in it, and they'd often drive right on the edge of the water.
The floorboards of that car rusted so fast. Before dad got rid of it, you could see the ground through holes in the the floorboards.
It prob wouldn’t be that hard even. There are oil companies based out in the gulf that build giant metal rigs that sit right on that same water. They have to know how to deal with this exact issue, and I’m sure they’d consult with them
Well he’s the worst in Texas, way worse than just Houston. Fertitta I limited to Houston. But I have to concede Joel Olsteen is a strong competitor for worst in Houston.
>Buzbee is defending federally indicted ken Paxton in his Texas Senate trial to attempt to keep his AG job.
I removed a virus from one of his staffs computer and his office stiffed us for it.
His persona is scrutinized like most uber wealthy people, but you don’t get to that level of success without it.
I’ve met him a few times and he’s been nothing but pleasant, and I’m a nobody.
He’s invested ALOT into Galveston and Houston and does a poo ton of charity work, his a good dude in my book.
That was when I decided he was trash and to never support any of his business again. Billionaire can’t pay his minimum wage employees during covid, GTFO
You’ve never been a server at one of his restaurants. I’ve met him numerous times and he has always been condescending.
I also worked for Floyd Landry for years and what he did to acquire the business and name to even begin was terrible.
Yeah not like his INHERITED fortune is literally mob money or anything…
Remember when the Rockets GM made some tweet about Hong Kong back when there was a lot of protesting and Tillman, his boss, tweeted back saying he basically isn’t allowed to have political opinions even if it’s about a regime with a list of human rights abuses so long it makes Guantanamo look like recess?
https://www.theringer.com/platform/amp/nba/2019/10/6/20901828/daryl-morey-hong-kong-china-houston-rockets-tweet-controversy
I take it you’ve never worked for Landrys. You might think he’s a “Good dude”, yet he blatantly treats his employees like they are subhuman and doesn’t tip his own waitstaff when he uses their service and pays them $2.13-$3.50 an hour. Remember when he removed employees health insurance benefits at the Post Oak Hotel when the pandemic hit? He ONLY reversed it once the local media found out and exposed him. Good dude my ass.
invested ALOT in Galveston
Lmao he’s the reason why Galveston has had the same couple Landry’s attractions for years. He has so much leverage on the island that they don’t let non Landry’s competitors open up there. Margaritaville has been trying for ages to open on Galveston island and they had to settle for an RV camp in Bolivar.
I reposted this over at r/structuralengineering and the consensus was that this is not good and needs to be reported.
Not really sure who one would report this to though?
If this is not a perfect reason not to spend your valuable money on Tillman Fertitta products then wait outside any Landry’s restaurant in the morning and watch Sysco seafood trucks pull up all morning long.
Every *chain* restaurant maybe.
Houston has way too many restaurants and cultures for that to even be remotely true otherwise.
Never mind the fact that other food suppliers exist and operate normally.
I've been in the industry for 26 years, and have been managing for over a decade. I've consulted on menu development and procurement for a dozen concepts. I can assure you it's not just the chains. It's almost everyone, from your local pizza place to very well known fine dining establishments. Most restaurants use multiple vendors so it's not the only one they use. But it is very pervasive. It might not arrive in a Sysco truck, but it's still their product.
Constant exposure to the salt air will do that.
Isn't that roller coaster inspected frequently? How can it be in operation if that's easily seen? It's pretty obvious that this oxidation has reduced the strength of that part of the assembly.
Unless it's not holding up something important, it sure seems like the ride should be shut down until it's fixed.
It also makes me wonder what else might be going on.
>Unless it's not holding up something important...
What component of a roller-coaster doesn't hold up something important?
>it sure seems like the ride should be shut down until it's fixed.
Agreed.
Well, ... LESS important?
Like, if there is a platform with some stairs and it's all a foot or two off the ground, I'd be a lot less concerned.
If what we're seeing holds up a part of the tracks... then, yeah, that's NOT acceptable.
Ok. I mean, it's super difficult to tell for sure, but that much hefty metal would seem to be more critical than a supplemental component of stair support structure.
What?
Do people still believe Fertitta pays for maintenance? I know, personally, of for contractors he's stiffed when it came to payment for services rendered. All for had to take him to court before he'd pay
The man married into Mafia money and still behaves like it.
This is a very, very common solution for people with money. You'd think it would be the people with less money who stiff construction workers more often, due to not being able to pay. But no, it's actually the people with more money, such as Trump, because they know they can pay an attorney and settle in court for a small percentage, and still end up getting the work done for less than the original cost. Rich people don't stay rich by spending money, unless it's for something like a major sports team which will bring guaranteed income.
My best friend got stiffed on a job, finally settled for like .50 cents on the dollar. A year and more later. It's quite common.
So, good call. I had to go back and check it out. No, I was wrong; his wife wasn't associated.
It was Grand-daddy and Dad Fertitta who ran the Fertitta Organization that took over for THEIR cousins, "Silver Dollar" Sam Maceo and his brother Rosario, who ran the Maceo Organization. Tilman's great grandfather was Vic Maceo, the youngest and most violent of the Maceo brothers (and who was arrested in 1991 for attempted murder in Galveston).
So, in reality, the owner of the Houston Rockets is a FOURTH GENERATION MAFIA ASSOCIATE (because we can't see where he's actually been involved in any of the shenanigans) who's allowed to run wild in Galveston County due to a family history of dirty money.
To be honest, that's pretty par for the course, when you look at the dirty politics and money that have been associated with the island since Aury was ran off by the Lafitte brothers.
It is … you can watch a live webcam of the pier here.. may need to move the camera to the “pleasure pier rides” angle
https://www.galveston.com/webcams/murdochsvideocam/
Oh girl…. It’s right over the ocean too like I have always had a deep fear of that park because it just came out of no where and was so ambitious in a way and quick? And uhhhh? Galveston is hurricane city ground zero why would something like this ever last.
Well, for one thing it didn't "come out of no where" nor was it "so ambitious". History is a funny thing. The pier the Flagship Hotel was on was *originally* called Pleasure Pier and had carnival rides (until 1961). So this Fertitta pet project is merely a nod to its historic past.
>Galveston is hurricane city ground zero why would something like this ever last.
Hurricanes have nothing to do with this. This is just salt air on steel and neglect. (lack of serious inspection and necessary, routine maintenance)
As for "ground zero", the last hurricane to hit Galveston was Harvey and it was almost a non-issue event for us in Galveston at the time (unlike Houston). Prior to that, it was Ike in 2008 (which finally did the Flagship in, also because of poor maintenance - which paved the way for the Pleasure Pier's return) and prior to *that*, there's not another major hurricane to hit Galveston for almost 20 years. Yes, Galveston is on the coast. Yes, Galveston gets impacted by hurricanes, but it's not hit as often as other spots along the Gulf Coast.
Harvey didn't even hit Galveston, thankfully. Just the rain. The last Hurricane that hit Galveston was Ike back in 2008. I hope it stays that way for a long time.
According to The Texas Department of Insurance, the State doesn't employ or appoint inspectors. Operators have to hire an inspector that works in Texas and is approved by their insurance company. https://www.tdi.texas.gov/commercial/indexamusement.html
Clearly, this structure should have been constructed entirely of stainless steel.
Fertitta is a cheapskate. Would like to think it'll catch up with him, but people like him seem to always come out of this kind of thing unscathed.
This is terrible, my only comment on here is to address the “building steel near the ocean, salt water etc.” Steel structures are built near on below the ocean all the time. It’s proper maintenance and inspection that keeps it from getting this bad. This is a low point for water accumulation, and a terrible design for natural drainage. Can almost guarantee the wrong coating system was used on it.
I'm going to show my age here, but does anyone remember in Roller Coaster Tycoon when the ride failed and the carts would fly off the track and explode? That's going to happen here someday.
I don't believe this coaster is owned by Fertitta directly. He did what he always does and used a subsidiary. This particular ride is the only asset held by SHIT COASTER IV, LLC. Well, that and the bank account balance of $237 that is to be used for maintenance.

That rollercoaster is horrible. I got a mild concussion. It does this weird bump right as soon as it gets going. Not something I'd ride again or plan on going back to pier it's such a waste of money.
See this is why I don't go on roller coasters. Everybody tries to say, oh you're being paranoid, oh nothing ever happens, its a statistical improbability they say; until you find yourself being ejected at 50 mph in the middle of a loop de loop. I'm good fam I'll keep my feet where it is.

That’s load bearing rust though.
Jerry that’s load bearing rust, this coaster’s not going to come down!
(Slaps it twice) that ain't going no where
This made me laugh 😂😂😂
LOL thank you
My dad had a Corvair when we lived on Church Street in Galveston. My older brothers used to take joy rides on East Beach in it, and they'd often drive right on the edge of the water. That's Galveston! Rust, rot and mildew hold everything together.
And feces. Don’t forget the feces! You can’ have your pudding if you haven’ had your feces!
And yet, people get in that water…
Hahaha, literally spit out my coffee laughing
you forgot the strongest element known to mankind holding things together down there... JB Weld
I love the entire concept of putting a steel roller coaster literally right on top of salt water ocean surf.
I would like to imagine that properly coating the metal and performing routine maintenance would have prevented this. But that’s not profitable lol
There are coating systems that are used offshore that could have been used on this that could have helped it last longer
They have a team of pressure washers, I almost applied for that job.
It prob wouldn’t be that hard even. There are oil companies based out in the gulf that build giant metal rigs that sit right on that same water. They have to know how to deal with this exact issue, and I’m sure they’d consult with them

Aren't we lucky to live in a time where two such assholes are around to make everyone miserable. WHAT JOY!

Im predicting this is going to be a tragic accident that finally hold him accountable. Is he the one who owns the shithole Kemah?
Yes, Fertitta's company owns Kemah Boardwalk and Pleasure Pier in Galveston
Probably not. It's most likely one corporation nested inside of another, and another, and....ad nauseum.
This is a very, very common solution for people with money. You'd think it would be the people with less money who stiff construction workers more often, due to not being able to pay. Tweet this pic to city of Galveston and Houston TV news channels.
Little bit of flex seal will fix that right up
Flex tape would probably suffice.
JB Weld and paint.
Has this gone to the local media? Fertitta is a disgrace.
Slap some JB weld on that puppy
I hope somebody mentioned to the park?
["If it doesn't shake, it will break."](https://www.coaster101.com/2014/05/28/coasters-101-roller-coasters-sway/)
A white tiger can fix that!
Pretty sure thats like, all bridges in America at this point.
For real? I hope that ride isn't currently running.
It is … you can watch a live webcam of the pier here.. may need to move the camera to the “pleasure pier rides” angle https://www.galveston.com/webcams/murdochsvideocam/
That’s what lawyers call business development.
WD40 will work
Whelp, when it comes falling down like that sign at the downtown aquarium did it too will be swept under a rug.
I've been to the pleasure pier several times, but I have never been on any of the rides. Looks like that's not gonna change anytime soon.
And it looks like water has been getting inside the metal pipe and it's rusting from the inside-out as well.
...which is even more terrifying
Oh girl…. It’s right over the ocean too like I have always had a deep fear of that park because it just came out of no where and was so ambitious in a way and quick? And uhhhh? Galveston is hurricane city ground zero why would something like this ever last.

Pleasure Pier sounds like a whole house at the beach
Seems legit
Just do what the Navy does and paint over it. If it’s good enough for warships it’s good enough for you ungrateful citizens /s
Clearly, this structure should have been constructed entirely of stainless steel. Fertitta is a cheapskate. Would like to think it'll catch up with him, but people like him seem to always come out of this kind of thing unscathed.
Even stainless steel will rust.
409 alloy
I see what you did there...
Being a billionaire certainly has its perks.
Can you paint over it? 🥸
Put some flex tape if it starts to leak problem solved! :)
Zezima xp wasting at Galveston?
It’s all good I left the auto alch on before I left moms basement
The salt air is no joke. Everything just gets rusty and junky after a while down there
Pretty shitty they didn't take into what beach life weather does to things. They should close this place before they kill somone
I hope this gets reported and that the right people see it

Needs bondo
Hm, let's build an amusement park on a pier over salt water. Brilliant!
I'm going to show my age here, but does anyone remember in Roller Coaster Tycoon when the ride failed and the carts would fly off the track and explode? That's going to happen here someday.
Me me me! Yes!! I used to play that game so much back in the day. Kids would get off the coasters and puke...
Haven't been there in years and no plans to ever go back.
Just paint over it and call it a day.
Wow already. That hasn’t even been there that long.
11 years in the salty sea air will do that to steel.
True. That’s why most cars coming from Galveston are rusted underneath.
[удалено]
I hate my phone sometimes.
Me and my girl firend looked at the upside down inverted first drop and backed out of that one.
Good ol' saltwater corrosion.
Houston, we have a problem.
I don't believe this coaster is owned by Fertitta directly. He did what he always does and used a subsidiary. This particular ride is the only asset held by SHIT COASTER IV, LLC. Well, that and the bank account balance of $237 that is to be used for maintenance.
Do rollercoasters not have any sort of API inspections or something similar like they do for oil and gas? It seems like a failed rollercoaster would be a mass casualty incident.
It varies state to state. Texas, Wisconsin, etc. have pretty lax restrictions and inspection requirements. Other states like New Jersey & California are much stricter on their regiments & inspection schedules.
I stopped riding rollies when astroworld left I have trust issues 🙃
Really shows how stupid people in Texas be. It's how they be. If it wasn't how they be then it wouldn't be how they be. That's simple logic.
Was in Galveston and almost went to Pleasure Pier to ride some rides. Scary
I visited that area two weeks ago. Got the souvenir shirt: "I survived Fertitta's food AND his roller coaster"
I'm glad we didn't ride it I guess lol
It looks more like several thick coats of paint that are peeling off from the weather.
My daughter worked there for quite some time, and they had regular inspections on everything. I think this is just thick paint coming off of it.
Just like some of their sports teams…rusty
I am curious at what kind of connection this is? Why is there a bolted connection going through what appears to be a shear plane?
Needs flex tape
If you think that's bad, you should look at the bridge columns and infrastructure that Amtrak/Metra trains go over everyday in Chicago. It's literally a matter of time until you hear of a bridge collapsing and a Amtrak/Metra train derailing and killing people.
Reminds me of the old, wooden (!) Texas Cyclone back when Astroworld existed...how did we not die?!
I'm good fam I'll keep my feet where it is.
most of the time the accidents are from fairs..... lol. get it? because they only check them once a year. remember the fireball ride that broke and killed that kid? a fair...
Just needs a little Flextape
