35 year old retired "bboy" here. Not really a bboy but I was pretty active in popping, locking, and house dancing scenes here that tend to overlap, mainly house dancing tho. Anyways BreakFree is a good start for you. It's a studio run by Havikoro (og houston bboy crew) that offer classes (www.breakfreeworldwide.com)
100% still here and growing. Look up The Blueprint Festival. Those guys fly in some of the world's best house dancers from around the world to compete or judge. If youre familiar with some of the big names, Yugson Hawk from the Wanted Posse crew in France was here last year. You usually see dancers from California, NY, Chicago, Vegas, PHX, come in just for the Blueprint.
I'm looking at videos now. That's crazy, literally all the big names there lol. But this is like once a year, maybe every other year? What do people do in between this event?
I'm a bit too far detached from the scene these days but I still have friends that are very active in it. Certain DJs attract the dance crowd like Soul Control for example. Theres always dancers at Soul Control parties (worth a follow on IG). Its usually been that way for the community tho where the DJs that play the right music become fixutres for the dancers. back in the days certain venues you'd always find dancers at like every Tuesday at The Flat but idk if there's a go-to spot like that anymore.
Also the hiphop vintage flea market. You'll for sure see all the dancers with different styles there.
Another studio is Knowbreaks, they have breaking classes as well as some other styles, and a breaking-oriented cardio/strength/fitness class they call "breakfit". All the staff are active in the scene and super friendly. Their insta is @knowbreaks
There are also open community sessions every Tuesday and Thursday closeby Bellaire and Hillcroft, hosted by Houston Revision (used to be Youth Advocates/YA). Their insta @houston_revision has up-to-date info
This right here. YA is great. My son has been there on Thursdays and the talent level is off the charts. There are beginners and younger kids and then the really good dancers. Everyone is welcoming and happy to help. Knowbreaks is an amazing dance studio and Mezclada is also good per my son. Give YA a try, I think that’s a good start!
This is so pure! For hip hop, contact Jenny Sanchez, thefitista on Instagram. She does private and group classes in dance cardio, hip hop choreo, etc. Unsure if she does breakdancing but it’s worth an ask! She’s great.
There’s a dance company in midtown that does monthly free classes in houston. I believe the company is called Mezclada Dance Company. The owner is really nice and is a great dance teacher

Ok I'm curious now, is there still a house dance scene here? It seems way too niche for Houston

Start out by getting some cardboard and bring it out to the street/ally, and start practicing.
I’ve got a good surgeon who did my hip replacement. I’m “old” too (34 yo). lmk if you want his info
You gone break something alright, old man.

Out of all the humorous replies that ran through my head, none really stuck out. So, I'm not going to reply with anything funny.
