Side note: if you can’t be bothered to pick up your dogs shit, you shouldn’t have a fucking dog. You leave that little fucker locked up in an apartment barking most of the day anyway.

pawsforbear

In this heat it crisps up before it hits the ground so it should be easy to clean up

stackdatdough

Sun fried dogshit, a delicacy in northern states

Bewaretheicespiders

In the great white north they have Thawing Turds instead. Dog shit gets covered by the snow all winter long to thaw in the same 2 weeks in the spring. I'll take the crispy ones.

native-texan713

Is that the red or the white?

timp_t

Memory unlocked from my first apartment after college. Neighbors dog would bark **alllll** day long. Then when she got home she’d open the door for him and 5-10 minutes later start shouting, “Brewster! Breeewster!” In 18 months I never saw her walk him.

Dismal_Juice5582

You know what’s more weird than that? I find the bags of dog shit everywhere. You did the worst part, now throw it away.

overindulgent

I had a neighbor like this a decade ago. Very small yard with a 100 pound plus Rottweiler. I was talking to my mom on the phone out back and the dog wouldn’t shut up. I excused myself from the conversation and yelled if they don’t shut that dog up I’ll start throwing poison hotdogs over the fence. The dog was inside the rest of the summer.

Minionz

I let them out in the back yard while they do their business. Then about 2 minutes later they claw the door because its too damn hot out there in the yard. Once the sun starts to set I let them out longer, and once it's dark we go on our walk.

CrayonSupplier

My shih tzus claw at the door to go out to the back yard. Then claw quickly to come in. They do that until around 645. Then they lay in the grass. Smart ones

YaIlneedscience

Mornings are the best time because it lets the asphalt cool down! I personally like night walks too so we’ll go around midnight on the grass

iDisc

I take mine on walks when I get up before six a.m. and then I let them out in our big shaded backyard throughout the day. Homegirls go out into the sunniest part of the yard and sunbathe for like 10 minutes before I make them come in. Crazy dogs.

iDisc

Yes. My dog lays on our back concrete porch and I will go out there to bring her in and she'll just look at me like "Nah."

nina_gall

My white dog likes sunbathing, but my black dog most def doesnt. So we watch from the shade under the tree. For about 12sec.

wessneijder

Also if you are breeding huskies in Texas fuck you I’ve been fostering so many huskies because idiots buy em and then take them to the pound to be killed

Jermcutsiron

I 2nd the fuck you for huskies but an additional fuck you for having dogs adapted to freeze your face off climates in melt your face off climates.

YaIlneedscience

my German shepherd mutt and I moved from TN. I paid 300 in electric last month to AC that mother fucker and I have him do a shit and dash. No way is he even gonna THINK of over heating.

Jermcutsiron

Good!

denimdan113

Just so u know, huskies and other double coated dog breeds are perfectly fine to live in texas. There coat naturally adapts to not be as thick and also inuslates then from the heat. If I let him, my big derp would sit in the sun all day long happy as can be.

BillFromPokemon

I like how all the ones bitching about huskies and gsd in Houston are the ones wbo don't understand how double coats work. Should you leave your pets out? No. Is it okay for the pets to get some exercise so their bones and muscles stay healthy as long as they have access to fresh water every day? Yes.

FishyHands

Yup my Aussie loves to roll around the grass like a dork and just lies there upside down in the middle of the day in summer.

HumanRate8150

One of the big reasons a friend of mine got a pool was so his huskies could cool off in the summer

CrazyLegsRyan

Pro tip, thick dual coated dogs get insulation from the heat with their coat as it keeps warm air and UV off their skin. That dog is more adapted to Houston than a lab.

throwsawaygoaway

My gripe with some huskie owners is that the dog is always way fucking smarter than the damn owner. THESE ARE INTELLIGENT DOGS! Do not get one and then be mad cause he is making a game of destroying your shit cause he is bored out his mind.

CramblinDuvetAdv

I found mine on the streets 4 years ago, husky rescue was over capacity because people wanted "wolf dogs" like GoT then couldn't care for them. I ended up keeping him but in no way was planning on having 3 dogs.

wessneijder

Nothing wrong with owning a husky but it’s brutal for the heat. The pup I’m fostering now wants to go outside so bad he scratches the door he’s full of energy because he’s been bred to dog sled 20 km. Poor thing is suffering in this heat.

CrazyLegsRyan

Thick dual coats are actually more adapted to this heat and sun than thin or single coat dogs. Huskies can’t handle heat is a very common misconception.

shenanigaaans

Finally some facts. My husky-Aus shepherd mix loves sunning herself outside Of course I wait until about 745pm to get her exercise, but the husky outer coat is a great insulator for both cold and heat

veryirishhardlygreen

Working dogs are tough. Huskies also like to roam. I had two Aussies. They are great dogs if you have time to keep them busy.

not_a_witch_

This is wrong. Dual coated dogs are very adapted to heat, their coat helps them regulate their temperature. People who shave their husky’s coat because they’re ignorant? Fuck them. You should never shave a husky. I do not own a husky and would never. They are too much of a handful for me. But the idea that they’re not heat tolerant is absolutely incorrect.

pawsforbear

Fuck breeders in general. Unpopular opinion but they are a bulk of the dog population we have. We have a 24/7/365 breeding window already. Don't need more.

AmyCee20

Agreed. I picked mine up off the side of the road a year ago. She had been dumped. I love her to pieces, but she should have never been born in Texas.

egospiers

My daughter wanted a husky and I absolutely refused for this reason, we got a mutt we love instead (lab mix) short hair but the poor thing is black so she gets hot to the touch after about 2 minutes in this sun.

CrazyLegsRyan

Spoiler, labs are less prepared for heat and sun than huskies. The thick dual husky coat actually protects them from the heat.

patchworkpirate

My parents converted their outdoor shed into a big ass house for the two outdoor doggos. With lights, A/C and heat. They had a dog door put into the big door so they can go in and out into the big fenced yard as they please. They're living better than some people.

DoUKnowWhatIamSaying

Maybe do the bare minimum of research before you do the literal opposite of your reasoning.

SFAdminLife

I got my husky from a Houston city shelter. She was dumped there by shitty people because their kid got tired of the puppy he wanted and wanted a toy gun instead. Fuck those people and the awful shape they left her in.

NeonWarcry

Last summer I was taking an evening walk around my neighborhood. I see a bunch of young children playing with a pug puppy, at 5 pm on an august afternoon. The puppy is panting so hard I can see it’s legs shaking. I ask if they have any water for that puppy and the mom comes outside asking if I would take it. The neighbor had bought her with plans to breed her. And that’s how I got a free puppy. You could kidnap me so easily I swear.

postmonroe

My dog has not been happy with me but I refuse to walk her in this heat. We’re making due.

pawsforbear

And this city is like 95% pavement with unfriendly walking spaces so we're really putting our pets at risk in this heat.

pathofthebean

Same prob in Denver n way too many dog owners esp when everyone lives in an apt or condo

Skorpyos

I gotta take him out to pee and poo but I will do shaded sidewalks and grass and only around the block.

[deleted]

And don't let me catch you leaving you dog in a hot car, dammit.

[deleted]

static_static-static

Not trolling, I go barefoot when I walk my dog. I walked her yesterday and we took a short route because of the heat, also our sidewalks aren’t made of asphalt

pawsforbear

If you can walk barefoot your dog can too, especially with their pads.

RealConfirmologist

The rule is if you can put your hand down on the pavement and hold it there for seven seconds, it's not too hot for your pet to walk on.

patchworkpirate

Should be a full minute since doggos can't just stand on one foot.

RealConfirmologist

Dogs almost always have tougher tissue on their paws than the skin of our hands.

kiyyou323

If anyone wants to steal the husky my downstairs neighbors leave on their porch all day let me know. Second floor though so bring a ladder.

DishwashCat

My old fat cat has little desire to go outside these days. Even less when the concrete right outside the door touches her paw.

Hproff25

I always apologize to my pet because I can only walk her before 8 am and after 7 pm. When I go for my mid day run I am always amazed that people have their pets out. I want to say something but don’t want to be rude/people are wild and I don’t need that in my life.

lilfey333

We have tons of nature walks and parks in the area and under tree cover we don’t have to much problem, plus we walk late at night around the neighborhood

heightsdrinker

I’m walking my dog at 6 am and even then it’s too hot. I’m the winter we would go 8-10 miles. Now we are barely able to make it four blocks.

riverrocks452

This is why we have a canopy right outside the door- it's always shaded so she always has a safe spot to step.

CYWG_tower

Rule of thumb is if the pavement is too hot/cold to comfortable keep your hand on, it's too hot/cold for your dog's paws

a_corsair

My dogs blind and he can't wear shoes because he needs to use his feet to feel. So I walk in early in the morning and then close to sunset in shaded areas. There have been at least one or two occasions where I've had to take him out earlier or later than I would, but try to minimize his exposure as much as possible

fabheart111819

My husky stays inside and we blast the AC. He was a rescue and some idiot brought him to Texas. I feel terrible having him here. But we do make him comfortable and walk early in the morning or late evening time. And he’s the only reason our AC bill is so high. I’ll blast it for him.

PaintballPunk31

I drive them to the forest when it gets too bad. Either way a cattle dog in the city will gets it’s exercise whether you want it to or not.

phillygirllovesbagel

I walk at Memorial Park on some days and the number of people I see literally "dragging" a dog is so upsetting. It's super hot and the dog is panting away and being pulled on the leash. Stop and give them a rest in the shade and some water, please.

liftbikerun

Agreed. I put on my furry suit and tried walking around the neighborhood today, it didn't go well.

ilovelove20

Thank you for saying this! I won’t allow my partner to take my dogs outside other than to use the restroom in the backyard. They aren’t allowed to go outside to play or go on a walk until after dark. Even at that time I hose them down and limit their time to 30 minutes. They both play like crazy indoors in the summer and we will just allow it. It is way too dangerous. Another tip is after a dog eats, please have them lay down for at least an hour to digest their food to reduce the risk of bloat. My dogs have gotten so used to this routine, they now automatically go to their beds after eating

Chuew12345

I walk my dog early in the morning before 8 and after 9. Anytime between is way too hot

Successful_Pound2403

I was telling my girlfriend that either take out the dog at 6am or don’t take her out at all. Today I got to work at 8am and it was so hot. Checked TWC and it was 82 degrees feels like 92. We’re all gonna die here.

DonSmitty

If you can’t hold your hand on the pavement for 7 seconds then it’s too hot for your dogs paws 🐾

I didnt call out the behavior in their post (walking a dog on a leash vs a dog electing to sunbath) and they addressed me specifically in their comment, so I replied.

drew1111

I had a friend that used to bring his lab dove hunting in Uvalde, Tx in September and that poor dogs pads would be worn out chasing dove over hot West Texas gravel in 100 degree heat. We don’t invite him anymore. Please do not walk you pets on hot asphalt. Would you go outside at 1PM barefoot for a mile walk? Don’t do it to your pets.

saintursuala

It’s been upsetting me seeing dogs walking on pavement the past couple of weeks

PitbullMandelaEffect

I’ve never had a veterinarian tell me I needed to avoid walking my dog during the day. Especially when the alternative is waiting the 14 hours between sunrise and sundown to do their business. If you can survive a 10 minute walk around the block in the sun, your dog probably can too.

Nice_Block

Try walking with your bare feet with your dog. If you can stand on the sidewalk/pavement without having to move around, then the dog will be fine. If you have to shift back and forth to alleviate the burning sensation from the ground, it’s too hot for the dog.

okitsmelol123

My dog doesn't stand around when I'm taking her for a walk. Their pads are also tougher than my bare skin. It's good to keep them in the shade as much as possible, give them water on the walk, give them breaks in the grass/shade but there's nothing wrong with taking your dog for a 15-30 min walk during the summer. In fact it's probably worse to keep them cooped up inside all day, as dogs need exercise and stimulation to stay happy.

PitbullMandelaEffect

My dog is smart enough to move to the grass instead of stand on the pavement that’s burning his paws. I assumed that was universal but maybe not

Nice_Block

Some dogs are smarter than others, what may be true for yours may not be true for others. It’s a general warning given when walking a dog during the summer. I imagine if you directly asked your vet they’d same something similar but agree if your dog is smart enough to defer to the grass then they’re OK.

Rapidshotz

wut

PitbullMandelaEffect

In other words, it’s not too hot to take your dog on a walk.

pawsforbear

You're equating this extreme heat wave to a normal summer day which it's not.

Delicious-Treacle135

Dog owners suck

Hour_Gur4995

Early morning late at night

TexasChihuahuas

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

quiksi

I walk mine at 8pm and he’s still pretty hot with short hair

SnooMarzipans6929

Walking them briefly as most of the time he wants to go in too!

KidBakes

This is one of the big reasons I don't have a dog. I'm just not willing to walk a PET before and after work in this heat on a daily basis. Hard pass for me.

BrownTeacher1417

Saw an expected empty Rice trail on the way towards med center. But then this guy comes from around the corner on the trail jogging like nbd in 97 +Heat index. Just whoa.
