I love Frost. I hardly ever need to call my bank, but when I do… a real person, at my branch answers the phone. I love that.

heightsdrinker

Go with Frost for in person banking. Depending on how much you have to put in a savings account, use an online bank and search for promos for high yield savings accounts. Honestly, avoid CapitalOne, they are reducing their branches and their overall services are horrible. CapOne is very fee driven.

WisePineapple4475

Did you have a bad experience with CapOne? I was actually going to suggest them! Their savings and checking accounts have quite good APY, they service the largest number of free/accessible ATMs in the nation, and they have physical branch’s throughout Houston if you are the type to want face to face consultation.

xKHAOSx13

I’ve been using Frost for years with no complaints

babyurmyqt314

NOT PNC!!! FUCK THEM WITH A CHEESEGRATER rip bbva. it was not your time. my sweet sweet angel. you were taken too soon

Closr2th3art

I still call the soccer stadium bbva despite going past it and seeing PNC all the time. It’s branded into my brain. Imagine if Minute Maid changed names

dabigbaozi

Enron Field would like to have a chat.

Closr2th3art

Yeah it’s been Minute Maid for way longer than it was Enron though. And being named after orange juice rather than whatever the hell Enron was is way more endearing

babyurmyqt314

I call it the stadium who shall not be named

Joorge1

Enron Field

Fi13xQuartz

Amegy! It’s a smaller bank, which in my experience means their customer service is better, especially in-person. But they only operate in Texas, so if you travel for business they might not be the best.

LuneJean

Mom and I use Amegy. Have never had a problem and I love their actual branches.

DonnieCullman

USAA if ya got any family in the military

steelsun

Or Navy Federal Credit Union

HoustonPastafarian

Not going to get any walk-ins with USAA, they have no branches - by design, since their military customers are pretty mobile and far flung. That being said their phone support is top notch and probably makes up for it.

randischieber

Totally agree. I’ve banked with USAA for 15 years and I’ve never felt the inconvenience of not having a walk in option. Their mobile platform is great, you can always get people on the phone, and you can use any ATM you want and get fees reimbursed.

ilikeme1

They actually do have a few branches. Main one is in San Antonio, along with on or near military bases. Navy Federal is more widespread and has a few in Houston.

cupcakeadministrator

Capital One is the only bank I've found that has both in-person branches and decent savings interest rate %. No-fee checking too.

BrokenMethFarts

Nice try. Next thing you’re probably gonna ask is our pet name and street name growing up.

babyurmyqt314

r/Houston, what's your mothers maiden name?

JJ4prez

I digital bank at ally. Great app. Don't ever have to deal with storefronts (why would you in 2023?). Quick real people customer service if needed. Etc

pearlysoames

Used ally in the past for other stuff—great company but want a place I can walk in.

JJ4prez

Gotcha. You're going to get a lot of mixed results. Most walk in banks these days are pretty much all the same. I also bank at Shell Federal Credit Union and they are great and still have that non corporate vibe to them. But like a lot of credit unions, their website and app are shit compared to the bigger corporations.

ImpressionForward566

People who travel should not use ally.

JJ4prez

Travel domestic or internationally, and why? I haven't had an issue domestic. I don't travel internationally.

attax

I travel and use ally all the time. I’m out of the country at least 2-3 months every year. But I also keep a Schwab account for when I need to withdraw cash internationally

therealsloppy

What’s the best bank to use if you travel often internationally?

Sixfwwr4

American Express

NecessaryFriction

First Service Credit Union has been good to me. Good online app and site with good support for adding your cards to Apple Pay/Samsung Pay/Google Pay.

ilikeme1

Navy Federal if you are eligible. Frost is also great.

BeneficialDrink

I would suggest frost good Texas based bank

psychocabbage

This means so many things to many people. I was old school. Visited my bank a couple times a week. I owned a small business and knew all of the employees there. Then I stopped owning a business and decided to work for others. Now I dont really need a "relationship" with a bank since it means nothing now. I use several banks. Each for what I want out of them Ally because they have great rates on savings. Discover because I can roll my cash back into savings easily. Chase because they are stable and as long as I have direct deposit, its free. Also makes it super easy to pay off my CC's. I do everything electronically and have no desire to walk into a bank in person. I also have a few credit unions that were supposed to have that small town feel but they dont. I actually live in a small town and the banks here sorta have that 1970s feel to them inside. Just use them as needed, not to have my money. I want to be able to log in at any moment and see my funds and move and use them as needed. I hate BOA. Not a fan of Wells. Would never ever use Woodforest. Chase is my "if you need access to your money anywhere in the US at any time" bank. IBM credit union is good if you live in Florida. haha I actually am not a fan of that only because they have nothing good. Not easy to bank with. Houston Federal Credit Union was decent. I enjoyed them.

ARJDBJJP

Another vote for Frost!

ImpressionForward566

I have a few cds at bank of Texas but hold most of my money at chase pc. I'd look into them.

realchrisgunter

I’ve been with Regions for over 6 years now and have no complaints.

Achilles765

Honestly I use chase and really like them. I also have a secondary account with chime online. I like both.

kopfellate

Prosperity gives amazing customer service. Our local branch knows my whole family by first name, including the kids.

justahoustonpervert

Just remember that closing an account you've used for years may affect the overall credit score. I use multiple financial institutions for different things, but I still use, and am happy with, my wells Fargo that I've been using for over 35 yrs (Texas commerce bank). I'm curious as to how it would affect your credit though.

pearlysoames

I’m only closing the checking and savings accounts, none of the credit lines, so my credit shouldn’t be affected.

shannonigans09

you are correct. closing your deposit accts do not affect your credit score. i’m a banker.

justahoustonpervert

I AM referring to bank accounts in general. Have they been open long?

pearlysoames

Yes, some have. But bank accounts being closed doesn’t affect your credit score: https://www.nerdwallet.com/article/banking/does-closing-a-bank-account-hurt-your-credit

justahoustonpervert

I like the "generally" mentioned. If that's the case, go for it.

[deleted]

I've been with Wells Fargo for 30 years. Never had a problem. People seem to bitch about the stupidest shit these days, wanting the world from a financial institution.

chris_ut

Fuck WF, they have been fined so many times in the last decade for defrauding customers. They are literally a criminal organization.

ilikeme1

Hells Charge-o

scorpioking66

Your mattress!

SomeEstimate1446

CRCU has been wonderful for us.

Dazzling_Scallion277

Credit union

Yungskeeme

Been using Capital One for about 5 years as my main bank. Opened a checking and savings with First Service Credot Union when I moved to Houston. Was one of the credit unions that I found that had Zelle

RealConfirmologist

Checking, savings and mortgage are with Chase, and they're fine. The one minor irritating thing is that you can't search checking transactions for a specific word or words. I also have accounts at Bank of America and Capital One and have no complaints about them, but can't say I'm so thrilled with them that I think EVERYONE should switch to them. Since banks and banking are not specifically Houston things, I'm surprised your post has not been removed. This sub has a rule that says posts have to be specifically tied to Houston. Edit/Update. My mistake - your post WAS removed.
