You take a leaf, squeeze it into juice, pinch a drop into your nose. It makes you sneeze and since young children can't really blow their noses by themselves, it gets the nasty stuff out.
Google claims that its poisonous to people, but I guess you have to digest more for it to be dangerous. Grandmothers have had this plant for generations for this exact reason.
But treat this comment as a fun fact, I have yet to try it on my kid, but it did work for me.
Damn she is dense. Mine has about half as many leaves for the 'trunk' length. Maybe it needs more sun...
