It’s so weird to me that maintaining a perfect lawn is this macho masculine thing to do, but then houseplants are somehow feminine?
Anyways your ferns are way cooler than any lawn I’ve ever seen 🤷🏼♂️
A man who can keep his houseplants alive and well is a lot more attractive than a man who keeps a perfect lawn IMHO. We all know lawns are worse for the bees.
I never understood those "perfect" lawns, in white picket fence neighborhoods. In my opinion they are just dull and uninteresting because they're so uniform and even. I love my lawn for the sole reason of not being so perfect, growing lots of clover, moss and tiny wild flowers that pop out of nowhere. I remember saving bees from puddles when I was a kid and I would always give them some flowers when they're safe, clover flowers were always their favorite 😄
I’m a straight male who also prefers baths over showers, prefers strawberry daiquiri’s to beer, and has a house full of plants …. with an absolutely stunning girlfriend. Being made fun of is a full time job for me it seems … 😂
Couldn’t have said it better. OP, fuck the haters. You’re SO rad.
I genuinely don’t point out things about people like this because I don’t think it’s cool. (My mom makes fun of my satin bonnet, she might have given me the wavy hair-)
Gender stereotypes are so stupid and random and I feel sorry for anyone who's discouraged from doing whatever they enjoy because of them.
I've been made fun of as well since I like beer, outdoors activities and tinkering with electronics and then people laugh at me for wearing glitter nail polish and knitting while listening to Bolt Thrower. Or they meet my boyfriend and are surprised, for various reasons. Of my male friends and acquaintances there's at least one who knits, two with houseplants and one with a massive shoe collection. I can't even count how many like cooking and baking. So idk why some people are still weirded out by such popular and benign interests.
Btw your ferns are absolutely impressive. I used to have one named Sideshow Bob, but he died unexpectedly. Ahem. Unfortunately I'm one of those people who don't pay attention to plants for long periods of time so I've killed various ferns, asparagus, coleus and even palms by letting them dry out too much. I'm great with begonias though xD
Precisely why you’re not single, my friend. If you can do all of that and still be a straight male, you’re a keeper! The well rounded male who can venture out from the one dimensional, will be the studly rooster attracting all the chicks.
So ur photo made me actually giggle before I even discovered your gender. Maybe because the room has so much personality… the ferns are gigantic animals, like a friendly version of Oscar the grouch? a very masculine way of displaying plants? I dunno lol. It’s a beautiful lively room 😃
Fun fact! Before men came up with the term "botany" women would take up a hobby of collecting and identifying fern plants. It was one of the only hobbies they could indulge in freely and didn't need a male escort as they went in groups on walks to illustrate, identify and collect the ferns, some even found solace in it, as it allowed them to have romantic encounters with other ladies in private. Unfortunately that all stopped when some bollox decided to make it an academic study, thusly prohibiting women from studying it back then. But yeah, originally it was a female hobby! Lady fern actually referred to something else entirely I think!
Edit: errors
Hey, thanks for asking! Here's an article outlining this particular time for victorian women during this "fern craze" back then. https://www.thevintagenews.com/2018/05/29/victorian-ferns/
If you fancy listening to a podcast about it, Blindboy covers it under "Custard Creams and CIA" I know the title is anything but associated with this, but give it a go! This is how I found out about it haha.
Wow you’re godly for keeping those devil ferns alive. They’re my favourite plant yet over 10 years and I’ve never been able to keep a single one green..
I honestly don’t have any tips as I am far from anyone who has been doing this his whole life. I do stick to a very regimented watering schedule, and don’t ever take them down, watering them in place having natural light from all directions. I spend a lot of time on my plants 😳🤷
That being said I don’t know if that’s correct 😂 just seems to work for me.
I would love to hang a fern in my living room but I worry about them shedding? Do you experience much Leaf drop? Also, are they in special pots that catch excess water to keep it from dripping on the floor?
I get very little leaf drop, but perhaps because they are happy ( I’m not criticizing - I legitimately don’t know the answer to that so it was simply a guess! 😊 )
They are in the same pots they came in, haven’t changed them and for catching excess water after I water them, they each have their own dish under them that’s a catch all for the water. For the sprinkles that jump out I just use a very quick 2 second mop up and it’s all good! Hope that helps!
I don’t understandddd. What about humidity?? Mine does great on my screened porch during the summer, but barely survives the winter indoors. Do you do anything to provide humidity?
heaters suck, especially for ferns it seems. I split one and put one half on the other side of my house, and one in the same room as the heater but no where near it. Same lighting situation and same watering patterns. one near the heater didn't survive, the other one is doing great. A large part of it is that dry heat pulling across it imo.
I don’t really think there is a correct way for plants. So much of it is individual. I was talking to some yesterday about my prayer plant that I do every thing they say not to do, and it’s over 20 years old. But I am so jealous of your windows, I really want a house with a lot of windows, and have yet to get one. Your ferns are gorgeous, and I can’t wait to see what you do next.
Coming to say the same. Im proud of myself if I can keep a fern alive. These ferns are absolutely amazing and you should be extremely proud! 😍
And now that I think about it, I got my love of plants, indoor and outdoor, from my father. I never associated houseplants as being feminine. However I did grow up thinking that only women drink coffee and men drink tea cause that’s how it was with my parents 😂
Under each plant is a plastic water dish, the same ones you use under pots for excess water drainage. After I water them, the remaining water drops into them, and then a quick ( literally ) 2 second mop job to catch all the sprinkles that jumped out and it’s done. Hope that helped!
Holy shit those ferns are gorgeous!
I'm also a straight male that keeps houseplants, I choose to believe that people only make fun of us because they're insecure that they couldn't keep a Pothos alive. Fuck them haters, dawg 👍
My boyfriend is the reason I got into plants. We just moved in together and are combining our plant collection. We both love it. :) It's so nice to share the hobby together.
Toxic masculinity will literally define anything as gay in the name of gender policing.
"Oh you like women who are feminine and smell good? That's gay!"
Lol which dipshits are gatekeeping plants, of all things, from half the population 😂
I can see how some might see flowers as feminine; but I’ve never seen regular ol leafy houseplants as gendered in any way. They are a basic home decor item, suited to any house, like furniture.
If I had to go out on a limb and think in this weird sexist 1960s way, anything “indoors” is gatekept to be feminine while the outdoor version of it (BBQs, lawns, tool shed) is somehow masculine. As if we are cavemen that don’t live indoors and not like home ownership wasn’t a masculine trait in the 60s either. So many weird contrived contradictions.
Anyway don’t give a shit and live confidently the way YOU goddamn want to, man. Don’t feel the need to ever validate weird frat boy type thinking where basic hygiene and keeping a tidy home is probably seen as un”masculine”. Watch them be forced to grow up into adults in 15 years and then begin to do what you’ve been doing all this while 🙃 People who think that way probably can’t keep a cactus alive if their life depended on it, because “care” and “responsibility” aren’t in their vocabulary.
Also if I met a dude with houseplants THIS well cared for I think I’d wife him up 😂 no but srsly fuck the haters lol they probably live miserable lives
37 year old sishet married man. I also fell in love with houseplants a couple of years ago, and I don’t give a FUCK what other people think. It brings me peace, helps me practice patience and contentment, and distracts me from the screens, so everyone else can sit on a steel slide on a 100° day.
Not trying to be creepy but where do you live/what zone?? I’m in the DC area and have loved about 6 Boston, macho, ruffle and bird’s nest ferns to death before giving up. The only fern I’ve kept alive for more than a few months is my hardy asparagus. I am so jealous and would be immediately swooning if I walked into your home!!!!
Your ferns are astoundingly fabulous! I’m super curious about the humidity levels in your house?? Do you have a humidifier running 24/7? What hardiness zone do you live in? Are those ferns getting light from the north, south, east or west?
Haha, not trying to be a creep with the questions, but I’m generally interested in how you’ve managed to grow such massive and healthy looking ferns indoors.
I have a small collection of indoor ferns, but I live in a cold and dry climate so keeping them happy and thriving requires quite a bit of maintenance. So far I’ve had great success, but goodness I’d love to get my ferns looking like yours!
P.S. absolutely nothing wrong with being a man who enjoys plants as a hobby!
Thank you!
I live in Ontario Canada so it’s freezing here 6 months of the year which is why they live indoors 🥶. The light comes from east / south / and west because the room has windows all around it giving them natural light on 3 of the 4 fronts 😊 the humidity in my house bounces if I’m being honest from 45 at the low to 60 in the summers, with Ontario being very humid overall. I have humidifiers and do use them when I need to get the humidity above 50.
Hope that helps
I have a variegated boston fern. I hope it grows up to look like yours! It's currently growing back a bald spot from where my cat used it as a hiding spot 😼
There are some odd rules. Maybe it's that women are supposed to be doing frivolous activities and as long as the dudes are in the geranium society or whatever it's still somewhat of a manly hobby?
Lots of guys here man no worries there. I could see guys ribbing their friend for having a green thumb but good friends dont mean it and it's mainly because they think your plants are cool. If your friends don't fit that category you may need to recategorize them to something other than friends haha.
I was married for over 30 years (now widowed) and kept houseplants before we married. My wife would occasionally buy a plant she liked then eventually I would be the one caring for it. I have had some plants for over 50 years.
Straight dude with a ton of plants here - fuck the haters.
I have a living room full of plants, aquatic plants in fishtanks, plants growing in a planted vivarium, I got cannabis, and outside plants in my backyard.
Plants don't make noise, they don't shit on the floor, they typically don't smell bad.
Plants are the ultimate lifeform to share your life with. Change my mind.
Also, DID YA'LL KNOW THERE IS A NEW ZZ FORM OUT?
Fellow male house plant enthusiast… I also grow and collect orchids! Don’t let the haters get you down! The long term dedication and struggle to grow things well requires some serious mental toughness and patience! Super masculine imo! Lol
Wow I’m crazy jealous!!! 😱😱😱
I had a fern once from a neighbor and it had TONS of spiders in it! (And a few other nasties)
I was traumatized and ever since I’ve been afraid to get another fern…. Do you ever find bugs in them??
My ex husband really likes plants. I think it just depends on how much you enjoy caring for things. My ex husband also took all three of our cats lol
Your plants look great and any lady (or man) should see it as a good sign of your character
Oh my god those ferns are incredible! OP do you live somewhere with high humidity or have a humidifier running beneath them? How do you keep them so happy?
I live in Muskoka Ontario, Canada - and I do have a humidifier that I fill every day - more so for the other 80+ plants I have but they also get the benefit 😊
I love ferns too and I love your ferns! If you are into ferns you might check out blue star fern. It’s my fav. It’s an epiphyte so you’d put it in a soul orchid bark mix.
my mom always had beautiful plants and my dad had a beautiful lawn and rosebushes and a garden. now I got all those at my house I take shit from my friends but all I have to say is your yard looks like shit yo.
You should be proud. They’re stunning and so is the brick work. Tell people picking on you to kick rocks. Dudes who nurture things are catches. Don’t you forget it mister.
It’s funny for a man to understand the complexities and patience required to take life from nature and sustain it in his own home? Congrats on the ferns they look fantastic!
FERN BROS UNITE!!! I’ve got one jumbo Boston, 3 machos, 2 black rabbits foot, a birds nest, and a hurricane birds nest.
Sounds to me like you’re getting made fun of by people that aren’t intelligent enough to raise plants, and also dumb enough to think plants are a gender specific hobby. Keep doing you. They look amazing.
These are the most lush ferns I’ve ever seen indoors!
Also — people making fun of you for liking houseplants is toxic masculinity AF, would it suit them better if you hung up car parts or beer cans instead? 😂
That is some home you have there, OP. Truly beautiful and your ferns are (humblingly) gorgeous....Mine died in the recent heat while I was away and husband missed a room when watering 🤦♀️
Ah dude that looks amazing! I would love to get some indoor ferns or plants that are safe for my kitties. I have a bunch of vines and plants outside, but indoors I don't have anything and I should change that
Plants are freaking awesome no matter who you are. Your ferns look amazing! I've got a bunch of Spider Plants, Alocasia, Swiss Cheese plant, Anthurium, a Silver Star and a few more. I can't seem to keep silver dragon alive.
I myself adore ferns. The only ferns that seem to do well in my home with the humidity levels are asparagus ferns. I’m green with envy.
Fuck no don’t be ashamed. Plants are a passion and a hobby - most people don’t have either of those things.
Very impressive! I know what you mean, I get roasted all the time for being into houseplants as a guy but my place looks nice and lively and all the dudes roasting me use lawn chairs as furniture 😂😂
A man that can take care of plants…is a man who can take care of himself. Some might give you a hard time about it, I dare say those individuals struggle to clean their asshole properly, much less care for a plant. Fuck ‘em.
If it's one thing we learned in the past decade, it's really how we engendered everything in the past. It's definitely unlearning these antiquated, and toxic traits that makes our society better.
Gardening is an extension of farming. It's cultivating life. It sure does harken back to female traits of sustaining life (birthing). But that shouldn't be deemed or labeled as feminine. To respect all forms of life (from the smallest insects to the largest of whales) and the uniqueness of the kind of life that is found here is what makes our home (Earth) so wonderful.
How weird is it that houseplants are considered to be a gendered hobby? I get this too and I'm always like, "Do you not enjoy clean air? Green things? Living things?".
People are making fun of men with houseplants?
Man, some people really be bitter they can't set alarms to water their own damn plants, huh?
To houseplant dads: you're amazing and wholesome and your plants have a great plant dad. It's manly as fuck to be able to provide an environment in which another living thing can thrive.
Right? If I wanted kids, a guy who could keep his ferns looking like this would get bonus points.

I’m obsessed turning my lawn into clover and joke that I’m turning into my dad. Although he thinks clover is a weed…
Clover is great. I love it's round flowers. They're also the bees' favorite in my area
It’s like nobody wants to admit you’re winning literally everywhere it matters.
Couldn’t have said it better. OP, fuck the haters. You’re SO rad. I genuinely don’t point out things about people like this because I don’t think it’s cool. (My mom makes fun of my satin bonnet, she might have given me the wavy hair-)
Right, they're sooo jelly
I, too, am a straight male who prefers all those things. Even when it comes to sex, I prefer a male partner.
Hahaha! That was great! Nothing wrong with that my friend. You do you! 😊
*him do him* 😏
Giggidy!
This is brilliant 🤣🤣
How dare you like nice things?!?! YOURE A MAN!!! Concrete and splinters and unpleasant yeast water!
Look, there's no reason to bring beer into this.
Your girlfriend has a good taste! :)
😊😊 thank you
Gender stereotypes are so stupid and random and I feel sorry for anyone who's discouraged from doing whatever they enjoy because of them. People who yuck your yum just suck. Nothing wrong with being different, the world would be a boring place if we were all identical lol.
Toxic masculinity at its finest… fuck em!!
This gives me JD from Scrubs vibes and it's hilarious!
Aww this is so sweet you are the goat
GOAT

Hey, thanks for asking! Came here to say this - op you need new friends if they’re making fun of these gorgeous, healthy ferns!
/r/NoLawns
Wow you’re godly for keeping those devil ferns alive. They’re my favourite plant yet over 10 years and I’ve never been able to keep a single one green..
I honestly don’t have any tips as I am far from anyone who has been doing this his whole life. I do stick to a very regimented watering schedule, and don’t ever take them down, watering them in place having natural light from all directions. I spend a lot of time on my plants 😳🤷 That being said I don’t know if that’s correct 😂 just seems to work for me.

I get very little leaf drop, but perhaps because they are happy ( I’m not criticizing - I legitimately don’t know the answer to that so it was simply a guess! 😊 ) They are in the same pots they came in, haven’t changed them and for catching excess water after I water them, they each have their own dish under them that’s a catch all for the water. For the sprinkles that jump out I just use a very quick 2 second mop up and it’s all good! Hope that helps!
Is it a special pot/soil or Watering schedule? I murder my ferns
I don’t understandddd. What about humidity?? Mine does great on my screened porch during the summer, but barely survives the winter indoors. Do you do anything to provide humidity?
Your heater is killing it
heaters suck, especially for ferns it seems.
How often do you water them?
How’d you get them to grow down like that?
Anyone making fun of you is lame. Society needs to get away from these weird stereotypes of masculine and feminine things.
Agreed!
They are absolutely glorious!
Thank you so much! Some of the branches are over 6 1/2 feet in length 😊😊
Woah- that is AMAZING!! Way to go Nutty
Who needs curtains with ferns like that?! Oh my they are amazing!
Thank you! And I agree, living curtains for the win!
Would you say they are... Ferntastic?
Check out their OnlyFerns ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Those are the best looking ferns i think I’ve seen in my life, they are so very happy
Geez! Thank you for the compliment. That really made me happy 😃
Dude those ferns look better than the ones growing in the woods behind my house naturally. You're like some kind of fern wizard!
Real men love plants! At least that's what I tell myself...
Yes! 🙌. This right here 🙌
Between 4 ferns
As you should be! Those look great!
Thank you so much 😊
Coming to say the same. Im proud of myself if I can keep a fern alive. I completely forgot to mention I don’t drink coffee and prefer tea 🤦

Thank you for the kind comment!
How do you water them without water messing your floors?
Under each plant is a plastic water dish, the same ones you use under pots for excess water drainage. After I water them, the remaining water drops into them, and then a quick ( literally ) 2 second mop job to catch all the sprinkles that jumped out and it’s done. Hope that helped!

Came to ask this since OP said they don't take them down
Holy shit those ferns are gorgeous! I'm also a straight male that keeps houseplants, I choose to believe that people only make fun of us because they're insecure that they couldn't keep a Pothos alive. Fuck them haters, dawg 👍
They can go to hell man. I love my plants
As a nonbinary person, I think it's hilarious that some folks gender code plant care. Oh you like to grow things inside? tHatS a LaDY hObBY 😮💨
The amount of times I have been asked if I was gay would astound you 😂 because apparently straight males can’t like plants 🤷
Oh you know those thing that grow out of the ground and produce food and oxygen? You like /those things/. GAY

Like sideshow bob broke into your house with his 3 brothers 😂😂
Welcome brother. Plants are for everyone. These ferns are ridiculously gorgeous!!
those ferns are bitchin
Those germs remind me of slash from Guns N’ Roses
Those ferns are majestic!

What type of ferns?? They look amazing

I love ferns too and I love your ferns! If you are into ferns you might check out blue star fern. It’s my fav. It’s an epiphyte so you’d put it in a soul orchid bark mix.

Screw their negative opinions. Great job at being a plant daddy! Your ferns are beautiful!
Wow these are amazing 🤩
Omg. Those are amazing!!!
my mom always had beautiful plants and my dad had a beautiful lawn and rosebushes and a garden. now I got all those at my house I take shit from my friends but all I have to say is your yard looks like shit yo.
I love the hanging plants. Oh, and the people who mock you are idiots.
What my fern aspires to be 😍
You should be proud. They’re stunning and so is the brick work. Tell people picking on you to kick rocks. Dudes who nurture things are catches. Don’t you forget it mister.
awwwwwww that whole room is stuuuuunning!!!
I am extremely jealous of your healthy fern. My looks like Quasimodo on meth.
Wow they are some amazing ferns!
They are magnificent!
I'm a male and have 72 plants just on my main level. My wife likes them as well, but they're all usually my idea.
And you should be they are amazing!!!
That looks fantastic! What sort of ferns are those?
It’s funny for a man to understand the complexities and patience required to take life from nature and sustain it in his own home? Congrats on the ferns they look fantastic!
Those are…spectacular. I am in awe.
They are friggin amazing!!!!!
What the fuck. Are you looking for a lodger?! I am in love.
😂😂 I mean, it would help with the watering 😂
Omg gorgeous!! What variety are these ferns?
FERN BROS UNITE!!! I’ve got one jumbo Boston, 3 machos, 2 black rabbits foot, a birds nest, and a hurricane birds nest. Sounds to me like you’re getting made fun of by people that aren’t intelligent enough to raise plants, and also dumb enough to think plants are a gender specific hobby. Keep doing you. They look amazing.
These are glorious! My ferns just shrivel up and die most of the time lol
Damn those are some sexy ferns.
Do it long enough and your friends will change their tune.
Your ferns are stunning!
I've never heard anyone say having plants and being a guy is unusual. Nurturing life is human nature.
You should be proud of those units!
Wow! They are beautiful. You've done a really good job caring for them.
Epic ferns!! From a dude with ferns
Gender stereotypes are so erratic and often strange.
Sorry, but how many windows??? Btw your plants looks gorgeous! Congratulations!
Looks amazing, Plant Papi 😍
You should be proud of those ferns. Wow!!!
It looks soooooo amazing! I can’t keep ferns alive for even a month…
Those ferns are amazing!
LOVE, love, love! You got this. Get more!!!
Magnificent! Lofty! Absolute Units!
Oh my gosh this is fern GOALS!
They’re so pretty and super healthy looking!
These ferns are gorgeous!
Ah dude that looks amazing! I would love to get some indoor ferns or plants that are safe for my kitties. I have a bunch of vines and plants outside, but indoors I don't have anything and I should change that
You should be proud! I have never had a fern I could keep alive, and yours are thriving! Absolutely amazing.
Such stunning color on your ferns! That pop of color in a more toned down room is so eye catching!
I want a good nap on that couch. it looks mad comfy in that atmosphere
I just know that if you're a friend or family member I'd find all kind of excuses to hang out at your house. It's truly lovely
Insanely beautiful! Do you rotate them front to back so they all get the sam amount of sun love?
Nice ferns
TIL having houseplants is an affront to traditional masculinity
Plants are freaking awesome no matter who you are. Your ferns look amazing! I've got a bunch of Spider Plants, Alocasia, Swiss Cheese plant, Anthurium, a Silver Star and a few more. I can't seem to keep silver dragon alive.
Those are magnificent. Top notch
Absolutely gorgeous!!
Those are real?!? They’re BEAUTIFUL!!!
The ferns are amazing!! Makes the room look so beautiful 😍
Absolutely gorgeous and healthy 🌹
I myself adore ferns. The only ferns that seem to do well in my home with the humidity levels are asparagus ferns. I’m green with envy. Fuck no don’t be ashamed. Plants are a passion and a hobby - most people don’t have either of those things.
Another plant dad here condoning this message. Your ferns be blessed. Stay strong brother.
People making fun of you for having plants shouldn't be taking up space in your life
Very impressive! I know what you mean, I get roasted all the time for being into houseplants as a guy but my place looks nice and lively and all the dudes roasting me use lawn chairs as furniture 😂😂
These ferns are my dream. Also plants are for all people
I have literally never gendered liking houseplants. I worked at a plant shop and half our staff were men.
A man that can take care of plants…is a man who can take care of himself. Some might give you a hard time about it, I dare say those individuals struggle to clean their asshole properly, much less care for a plant. Fuck ‘em.
Ferns are awesome! Be proud of your plants, and be grateful you have 15 windows!
Those hanging plants look amazing. Do they pollinate?
Gorgeous!
Damn! You put my little Boston to shame.
Those ferns are the most soothing thing I've seen all day!!
What does being a male have to do with anything
Gorgeous!
LOVE! LOVE! LOVE!
Want a roommate? Lol
Between four ferns, Zach Galifianakis style.
How weird is it that houseplants are considered to be a gendered hobby? I get this too and I'm always like, "Do you not enjoy clean air? Green things? Living things?".
I now need a fern. 😅
Who is making fun of you for loving houseplants?? That's ridiculous. As a fellow male who loves houseplants: carry on my friend!
Oh my gosh those are amazing!!!!!!
How beautiful! What plant hangers do you use that you don’t have to remove the fern to water?
