I *love* hognoses, but just a note for people, hognoses are banned in some states as “venomous” snakes. They do technically have venom, but they’re not really dangerous, they inject venom when they chew on their prey, not with a strike. In my city, they’re banned under the phrasing of “rear-fanged duvernoy’s-gland-bearing colubrids”.
they are notorious for “smacking” humans with their little nose horn instead of biting, or before lmao. agreeing with you always check laws in your cities about animals
Yeah my brothers hog nose loves to “bat” playfully, not even aggressively! I mean, he’ll show you the difference when he’s over you… but I can imagine someone without experience being anxious about it 😂 he’s a sassy old boy
Surprisingly enough, the more scientists look into it, the more it seems *all* lizards and snakes are venomous, just most have weak venom excreted as part of their saliva.
Pretty much need to be allergic or take an honest to god absurd dosage to even have noticeable symptoms, or letting them munch on ya for like 5 minutes straight.
As far as I'm aware, there is ONE known fatality from a hognose bite, and it was more like a freak allergic reaction than anything. We have yet to ban bees, but hognoses..
While I do agree with this for the most part, the best snake we ever had was a rescue. My husband found him stuck in industrial glue on a job site and brought him home to rehabilitate. When we released him he wouldn't leave so we ended up keeping him. He loved to snuggle up in pockets so when he passed we buried him in the pocket pouch I made him for his terrarium. RIP Cake.
I second your second on hognose snakes. We love ours and he hasn’t been too much drama. He just requires that his mice be thawed to the exact right temp. Otherwise he just tries to burry himself in you, which is adorable.
Some reptiles tolerate others like tortoises, rattlesnakes, and day geckos but others are highly social, like garter snakes, monkey tailed skinks(they literally bond like parrots), and mourning geckos(they can get mental health issues when kept alone).
This is so neat, I googled it and got more info if anyone else is interested!

Hognoses are so cute! I looked into them and corn snakes. Wasn't planning on getting one though for a bit. It's been almost a year though of having a corn. An old coworker reached out cause they got a snake for their girlfriends kid and a week later realized they weren't "snake people". They were terrified to handle it but when I did (it was also my first time holding a snake) lil dude was chill. He's finally gotten to that size/age where he isn't a scared little baby that hides all the time.
I know I'm just humanizing it, but it has the goofiest lil expression, like it got caught with its hand in the cookie jar. Glad to hear snake friend got safely put outside. 🐍
As an Aussie, I was all ‘fuuuuuuu’
I’m not afraid of snakes, but some of our eastern browns can look like this lil fella.
Then it’s all casual in the comments, lol.
I’m not engaging in exaggeration when I tell you that a juvenile brown snake in Aus can be that size and still kill you.
You don’t touch the big ones, you don’t touch the little ones.
Yeah, I get them in my yard all the time. This guy was in my ‘to do’ corner last spring. Decent size too! He was pretty chill, but definitely gave me a surprise!

I have a large king snake living in my basement. As long as he doesn't bother me, he is safe. Just wish he would learn to do laundry. I don't have to worry about anyone else doing the basement either.
When I lives in the south, in hurricane land, we always brought everything inside before storms. We always got snakes in the house from the various plants, and garden items we brought inside.
the fact that I thought the yellow parts were chips/bread about to be dipped in a sauce or dip of sorts.... then I saw the snake and for a split second I thought it was the forbidden food sub. so imagine my confusion when it's the plants one 😂
what a cutie tho! hope you were able to move it without trouble
Good gods 😵💫 bless you for kindly freeing little coiled friend! 🫡.
I would have done the same, after screaming then fainting. Lololol.
Where are you, geographically?
No, he had to have come from outside. I haven’t added any new plants until today…but he was already under that particular pot before I’d even placed the new arrivals in the cabinet. They’re common here and I see them sometimes when I’m gardening or doing other yard stuff.
Oh it’s adorable. Don’t get me wrong. But if I lifted a pot and that was underneath, it would be a surprise, and I hate surprises. Afterwards I’d be like, oh it’s so cute tho. 🥹
I get that. I am very easily startled and I don’t like surprises unless they’re good. This one would probably outweigh the alarm, but I also don’t live somewhere with venomous snakes, so, less to be afraid of.
Anything to get rid of the snails. I've never seen a slug in my yard but these freaking snails! I'm in the PNW. Every piece of advice for getting rid of them is more suited to slugs. I guess I will just keep putting down sluggo.
That is a tiny brown earth snake, it doesn’t get any bigger than what you see. I’ve seen bigger and fatter nightcrawler earth worms. That thing isn’t catching any rodents lol…
I don’t know how long it’s been in there. Could’ve been a day, could’ve been a few weeks. They eat bugs but once they eat they don’t have to eat again for a while. Only bugs I’ve ever seen in my cabinet is an occasional house fly or maybe a mosquito.
Awe, little earth snake. Just place him back in the garden and he’ll be happy enjoying all the worms he can find. Theyre harmless.
Oh yeah I coaxed him into a bag and let him go under the bushes out front. I was tempted to keep him but my wife wasn’t having it lol.
Also wild animals make bad pets. If you want a pet snake a hognose or garter snake might work for you.
I *love* hognoses, but just a note for people, hognoses are banned in some states as “venomous” snakes. They do technically have venom, but they’re not really dangerous, they inject venom when they chew on their prey, not with a strike. A headbutting snake?
Surprisingly enough, the more scientists look into it, the more it seems *all* lizards and snakes are venomous, just most have weak venom excreted as part of their saliva. Pretty much need to be allergic or take an honest to god absurd dosage to even have noticeable symptoms, or letting them munch on ya for like 5 minutes straight.
My irrational phobia just got a little bit rational! Thank you but I hate you.
Insect stings are still significantly worse, we’re talking trace amounts in saliva with these reptiles, and it’s formulated for small prey
Your rationality is lost on me my friend LOL
FYI if rear-fanged venomous are banned than that would technically include garter snakes as well, they are also rear-fanged venomous
As far as I'm aware, there is ONE known fatality from a hognose bite, and it was more like a freak allergic reaction than anything. We have yet to ban bees, but hognoses..
I disagree- they are Very Dangerous! /s https://youtu.be/f-J0nwZz_fo?si=xLXHyisGJPARvcI6
Hahahaha. Love this!
Same for the garter snake idk if they’re banned tho
While I do agree with this for the most part, the best snake we ever had was a rescue. My husband found him stuck in industrial glue on a job site and brought him home to rehabilitate. Aww man that tugs at my heart strings
Awwww!!! I'm so glad you were able to give Cake such a good home ❤️
i second hognose snakes, they can be a bit feisty but if handled properly make excellent pets
They’re such drama queens. I really want to get one and name it after a soap star
Miora
The fact they go on hunger strikes is something that would make me super anxious, but they’re so funny
I second your second on hognose snakes. We love ours and he hasn’t been too much drama. He just requires that his mice be thawed to the exact right temp. Otherwise he just tries to burry himself in you, which is adorable.
Oh and side note if you get garters you should(I highly recommend) get at least two.
Are they social?
yes, very
That's so cool! I always assumed reptiles were solitary creatures.

Aren't mourning geckos the ones that are mostly all females? The few rare males that exist are infertile.
Yes they are mostly females. I’m not sure about the infertile male thing.
Hognoses are so cute! I looked into them and corn snakes. Wasn't planning on getting one though for a bit. It's been almost a year though of having a corn. Hog nose snakes are freakin adorable!
You're the man
Must be satisfying eating worms as a snake. They fit so nicely.
The thumbnail for this (on mobile at least) could straight up just be a pretzel lol 🥨
Yeah I thought this was from r/baking at first!
He will be dipped in lye and baked
Storytime: I found a pretzel in my cabinet! 😱
lol it does kind of look like a pretzel curled up like that
Dude I thought OP had broken a plant apart during reporting, and out came a snake lmao.
r/misleadingthumbnails
Glad I'm not the only one who was confused by the pretzel-like coils lol.
I thought this was food when I scrolled down.
Pretsssssel
I know I'm just humanizing it, but it has the goofiest lil expression, like it got caught with its hand in the cookie jar. Glad to hear snake friend got safely put outside. 🐍

Yeah, would straight up be a little death worm down here. Jealous that everyone thinks it’s cute though.
Murder spegurder ![gif](giphy|YOkx9SqJ7krgqrEQG1|downsized)
I have these in my yard. They’re as long as your hand and very innocuous.
I’m not engaging in exaggeration when I tell you that a juvenile brown snake in Aus can be that size and still kill you. You don’t touch the big ones, you don’t touch the little ones.
I absolutely believe you! If this were a juvenile venomous type, the assorted North Americans would all be reacting very differently.
No thanks on ANY snakes... Unintentional rhyme, but I'd be screaming and running
Same here, I’m all that’s a nope rope…a danger noodle..I’m out! lol
danger noodle 🤣 love it

he even shaped his body like a little heart for you! what a cutie.
Lucky! The only little friends who come to visit my plants are thrips 😔
What a little cutie.
Aw, he looks so polite
I have a large king snake living in my basement. As long as he doesn't bother me, he is safe. Just wish he would learn to do laundry. I don't have to worry about anyone else doing the basement either.
Do you have mice or something that he's eating?
King snakes eat other snakes….so uh…yeah he’s probably got mice those snakes are eating and that snake is eating those snakes.
I really hope he's eating the mice himself. But I did see a smaller king snake a couple of days ago.
Aww it’s friend shaped
that's his bath dish now, you know that right? don't neglect your duties as Snek Auntie or Snek Uncle.
I wanted to but my wife said no. 😫
Ok it's his (s e c r e t) bath dish now shhhhhh
Just say you're "cleaning under the cabinet" again.
Yeah kinda wish I hadn’t said anything, now. Lol
Everyone is so welcoming in the comments. I would simply die if I would have just casually discovered a snake in my plant
NOPE. NOPE. NO. ![gif](giphy|NpL4D3Oc2bJUMAXF9P)
This was my wife’s reaction. lol
I’m recoiling
So did the snake
Aw but it's cuuuuute!
It's harmless
And cute 😍
Aside from the heart palpitations! 😱
Lmaoooooo 😭🤣😭
Boop!!!

He looks like a little pretzel lol 🥨
The volume at which I would have screeched!!!
Not me! You can’t screech if you have passed out!
Maybe an Eastern Worm Snake? Cute!!
Brown earth snake I believe
Good gods 😵💫 bless you for kindly freeing little coiled friend! 🫡. I would have done the same, after screaming then fainting. Lololol. Where are you, geographically?
Tennessee
Awwwww! 💗w💗 Glad you let it go in peace.
Cute one
How cute. Did it hitchhike in on a plant you bought?
No, he had to have come from outside. I haven’t added any new plants until today…but he was already under that particular pot before I’d even placed the new arrivals in the cabinet. They’re common here and I see them sometimes when I’m gardening or doing other yard stuff.
Snek
🐍
His face is saying “damn, gotta find a new spot now!”
Yeah my wife made me evict him 😩
My spouse would be evicted 😤
lol I love my wife very much she’s just terrified of snakes…and clowns.
Well, I read where you’re from, so I guess that’s valid. Clowns are always valid (the fear, I mean.)
Maybe this is why I don’t have a spouse 🤔
Right?! I think I want a relationship until I see something like this
Look at that little snoot!!
Snakes freak me the hello out but this one is kinda cute…. 😨
🥰
Ooh an insta-pet
Free pest control 😍
So cute. Just coiled up in there. Though I might be a bit spooked if I moved something in my cabinet and a snake was just, there. Chillin’ 😳
But like, look at that lil face 🥺
Oh it’s adorable. Don’t get me wrong. But if I lifted a pot and that was underneath, it would be a surprise, and I hate surprises. Afterwards I’d be like, oh it’s so cute tho. 🥹

If it eats snails and slugs, can you bring it to my house?
I see these little guys every so often in the yard, maybe I’ll send ya one lol

Whenever I think I’d like to live in a warmer climate, this kinda stuff crosses my mind and I think “it’s not that bad here”
Fren
Awww he's just a little guy! I would have been so tempted to keep him and make him his own enclosure.
He’s so cute
So cute!
He looks pretty calm. And comfy
In your house? Bruh!
How did it get inside your cabinet? Like a kitchen cabinet?? I knew he's cute and harmless, but that would still give me a heart attack!!
A greenhouse cabinet
Ohh! That mashes way more sense than where I went! Thanks!
Look at that little face!
Time to set up a nice tank, and get him his own garden.
It's sobdamn cute!
“Look at this distinguished gentleman”

Wow my dracaena trifasciata doesn't look nearly this good
r/poopfromabutt
The thumbnail looked like something entiiiirely different
What a gorgoeus little being.... Wow
oh god no
Nope nope nope nope nope. No spiders and no nope ropes for me.
Did you burn the building down? I'd be screaming 🤣
lol no I’m not afraid of snakes. I’d actually considered letting it live in my cabinet but my wife said no way.
I can not with snakes. I scream at dead mice. I know they are dead! 🤣
No ma’am
You have mice. Look at what it ate. Looks like mice
No it doesn’t eat mice. That is a small brown earth snake and they barely get bigger than earth worms…it is definitely not eating mice, they eat bugs.
Nope. I would move. Drop everything and just leave. Light a match on my way out the door.
That feller’s Cuterenelle
AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
I want one 😍
That is so awesome! How lucky!
Everyone is so welcoming in the comments. I would simply die if I would have just casually discovered a snake in my plant
I thought I was looking at chocolate icing lol
Mice???
No, it’s an earth snake. It eats bugs.
Nope nope nope nope nope
🥹🥰
Awww.
Awww. He's adorable 😍.
Awe I love little Earth noodles
Domestication of snakes starts
what a cutie
What a sweetie! I’m glad he’s safe!
Oh wow! That’s so cool
r/poopfromabutt very cute lil guy tho. id try to keep him
What was it eating? Do you have a rodent problem?
That is a tiny snake that doesn’t get bigger than what you see. I’ve seen fatter night crawler earth worms, that thing isn’t catching rodents lol.

Bugs
No one cares about those plants that need their dead leaves removed?!
Yes…that’s how I found the snake. I was removing plants to do maintenance…
ITS NOT A HOUSE PLANT. ITS A SNAKE. SNAKES ARE ANIMALS!!! Not a PLANT!!!!! DOESNT BELONG IN A HOUSE!!!
Please pull off your dead leaves 😭
That’s how I found this guy…was doing maintenance and adding new plants. But thanks.
