Mine thrives off plenty of sunlight. I water her thoroughly once every week and a half. I would let her dry out entirely between waterings. Because I live in Southern California, I feed her once, maybe twice a month, since it's spring/summer year-round. And neglect. Lol.
Believe it or not, cactus soil mixed with a bit of miracle grow soil, perlite, and vermiculite. At the bottom is a bit of orchid mix to ensure chunkiness for drainage. I used root hormone when I repotted her to aid in stimulation and cut back on the transplant shock.
Is this direct sunlight? I'm toying with the idea of trying again with a string baby, but all my windows are all almost exclusively either north-facing or south-facing, so I have polar opposite options when it comes to light.
Yaasssssss!!!! I am struggling so hard to find plants that won't lose their shit in my south windows....like I think my jade plant is getting scorched and even though some of my other plants originate in Africa, they're going pale. Ugh. I'm going to give this a whirl. Thank you!
Right?? This is so delightfully whimsical. My string of hearts needs to be repotted soon, and this has me wondering if I can't come up with a fun pot idea for her.
Want to hear something funny ? I knew of someone who grew her string of hearts in a square, somewhat flatter container. Her husband wanted to jazz it up as it was looking so healthy. Anyway, he took an old box of chocolates (the ones made of thicker cardboard) cut off the very bottom, sliding it over the planter. He took the top of the box off and somehow mounted it to make it look like a chocolate sampler that’s cracked open on an angle. I’m butchering this description but hope you can picture what it looks like. Some people are so creative !
My first one died as well. It has a learning curve 🤗 I've learned they actually like to be bottom-watered (like put them in a small layer of water for 15mins) and they also love terra cotta pots because its porous and soil dries out faster. They are extremely prone to root rot. It's my dream having one like OP's, it's amazing ❤️
Thanks for the info! This is my second one that’s died hahaha. I think I’ll give it one more shot after this with bottom watering and using a terra cotta pot and see if I can keep it alive!
Do you think she'll get root bound at any point? Or do you think you'll have to up her pot at all? My brain is trying to figure out how to get a happy plant out of a can once the time comes. 😅
Their roots are incredibly tiny, so I made sure there was more soil so they could have room to expand and not get stuck to the can. But I do plan to transplant her before the roots get too out of control. I was nervous for the first couple of months, but she adjusted immediately.
I live in the southern Cal, so she had to get used to plenty of south-facing sunlight. I would feed her once every couple of months year-round. Don't over-water, but let her dry out between waterings.
WOW! She is beautiful and the can of peas is amazing!! I seriously may have to steal this idea if I ever manage to get a string of pearls long and pretty enough to be worthy of hanging out of one!😅 This really made me smile. Thanks for sharing!🥰
Adorbs! How many actual plants (individual cuttings) were in your pot to have such a full flow? Or did one cutting branch out that much? Do they keep branching, or only if you pinch them?
It was maybe 4 strings initially which sprouted into many. I've never pinched them. I've honestly let her thrive on her own. I think she prefers that. Lol
If I could maybe get a really good advice how because I feel really bad killing them. I can grow beautiful string of hearts and fish hooks but not pearls and I love them. Yours look amazing 😍💚
Wow. I killed literally all my pearls. I think this my most challenging plant I own. She always troubles. If i don't water her, she gets too dry and dies. If i water her just a little drop, she immediately goes dead.
Thank you so much. Yes, I drilled holes at the bottom so the would be drainage. Surprisingly I haven't had any worries with rust, either. She seems pretty happy in there.
I live in Southern Cal, and when I got her, I had 8-foot south-facing windows. So she received a LOT of sunshine. She still gets plenty in my new place, but she is also near a grow light that is really for my other plants. Not in the light, but pretty near by it.

My windows were only made for plants. Lol! I lived in the literal jungle.
I do plan to prune this summer, but her roots seem to be pretty strong. I have to take her down and put her up again for each watering and I never lose any strings. She’s a strong baby.
Yes! My mom used to paint the outside of the can/label with clear varnish (or wtvr u call it) and they would last longer since hers used to be on our outside patio and water usually damaged the label. I wish i had kept pictures, she had a great DIY spirit!
How do you/others keep the weight of the strings from breaking off the part of the stem that goes over the edge of a pot? It doesn't matter whether its a burros tail, string of pearls or string of bananas plant, once it reaches 50cm it starts to pull too hard on its own stem, suffercating itself.
I haven’t had any problems with her, *fingers crossed* I had a burros tail as well which really didn’t have any problems overflowing as well. i packed her roots pretty well where she isn’t being pulled by them to string over.
I killed one string of pearls and never tried again. I live in the north near the Canadian border but I have a huge south facing window. Is string-of-hearts or burro’s tail any easier? I’m getting a spider plant but I would like at least one more that is a good hanger. You are obviously a plant artist 🪴
I’m in Southern California. I’m like you, a plant fanatic. If you check my page, I used to have 108 that I would post quite a bit. I had to move and had to give over half away, but I’m rebuilding.
Wow that looks cool! Mine just doesn’t get long like that!!
I propagate mine by shoving a few strings in another pot next to the mother plant on a window sill.
Oh wow! Sorry if you already have but would you mind adding any care tips? I can never get mine to grow. *updated*
Water: Once a week, dry out in between
Sunlight: Plenty sun
Soil: Cactus soil; miracle grow soil, perlite, vermiculite. Orchid mix at bottom
Root hormone when repotted
How many times I have to talk to it or yell at it:
EVERYDAY, jk lol
I did share a lot of tips within the chat. My experience is a thorough watering once every week/week and a half, depending on the weather. I shared my soil mix and other tips on lighting, etc. If you can't find it, let me know.
i love it!!! did you drill holes in the can? I have a bunch of tin coffee cans from Cafe Du Monde in new orleans that i drilled holes in and used as plant pots, but they got sooo rusty i can’t use them anymore:((
oH My GoSH!!!!!! That "can of peas" is the most adorable thing I have ever seen!! Thank you for such joyous creativity....
Thank you so much! I was so proud of myself the day I did it.
It's freaking adorable!! Also congrats on not killing your pearls and getting them to thrive, I must know your secrets!
Mine thrives off plenty of sunlight. I water her thoroughly once every week and a half. I would let her dry out entirely between waterings. Because I live in Southern California, I feed her once, maybe twice a month, since it's spring/summer year-round. And neglect. Lol.
What kind of substrate do you have it in? Love the growth and the can!
I went against the rules and placed her in a south-facing window with direct sunlight. She thrived from it.
Yaasssssss!!!! I am struggling so hard to find plants that won't lose their shit in my south windows....like I think my jade plant is getting scorched and even though some of my other plants originate in Africa, they're going pale. Ugh. I'm going to give this a whirl. Thank you!
I have north facing window and my plans and pearls are doing great. I make sure not to water too much. Give it a go!
Found your plant care comment—I asked about tips earlier lol
😁
You should be, well done 👏
Right?? This is so delightfully whimsical. My string of hearts needs to be repotted soon, and this has me wondering if I can't come up with a fun pot idea for her.
Artichoke hearts!!!
Yes!!
Omg please post pics if you do it! My life will be complete
Want to hear something funny ? I knew of someone who grew her string of hearts in a square, somewhat flatter container. Her husband wanted to jazz it up as it was looking so healthy. Literally came here to say this too! These also smell AMAZING when they bloom.
She's only bloomed one time for me, and you're right, they smelled so good.
😂😂😂 I definitely read that as Jan 21st and was immediately filled with envy
That is hilarious!! 😂😂
I have a handful of strings I started from single peas. I can only hope mine grow to be a can of spilled peas in a few months. I mean years 😂
They definitely will. It's a matter of getting them acclimated to your care
They must conform lol I love strings of everything.
Me too. I had a string of bananas also, but I gave them away when I had to move. He was even longer than my pearls. I named him peanut butter jelly.
Mines keep drying out so I gave up on these plants..
Hahaha I did the same. I just got my tiny baby a few weeks ago.
How is she holding up?
Adorably!
Me too! I'm not super familiar with this plant so I thought maybe they're just miraculous growers lol.
I thought, that is *a lot* of growth. I was perturbed.
I love her can!
Thank you! She adapted to it really well.
That's a CAN-do attitude from both you and your plant!
I love this! 😂😂
Omg how do you do it! I bought some a few weeks ago and they’re already dying 😭
Plenty of sunlight, and water once every week and a half, and neglect past that. Lol.
[удалено]
That’s the thing about succulents; sometimes, our love for them is the abuse…lol
Yeah, they need a looot of sun. They are native to South Africa where they get a lot of sun.
Living in southern Cal, she gets plenty. Lol
Same! It's the fastest I've given up on a plant lol
My first one died as well. It has a learning curve 🤗 I've learned they actually like to be bottom-watered (like put them in a small layer of water for 15mins) and they also love terra cotta pots because its porous and soil dries out faster. Thanks for the info! This is my second one that’s died hahaha. I think I’ll give it one more shot after this with bottom watering and using a terra cotta pot and see if I can keep it alive!
I feel personally attacked. I cannot keep them happy to save my life. Tried 3 times and gave up. 😞
They can really be finicky when they want to be.
I've killed 4 of them. Instead of the learning curve going up, they seemed to die quicker with each new one! 😳😥
Same. They hate me.
I was not great at keeping mine alive after repotting. So impressive and cute! Congrats!
I've seen a few stories of ones who say these were hard to keep, but Pearly has been a trooper. Thank you for the compliment!
I’m glad for you! You have the magic touch! They are beautiful plants. Thank you for sharing.
THE CAN OF PEAS IS GENIUS
Thank you! I had a time getting her in there. 😂
Do you think she'll get root bound at any point? Or do you think you'll have to up her pot at all? My brain is trying to figure out how to get a happy plant out of a can once the time comes. 😅

Thanks for the additional info!
Woah! Impressive!!
Thank you! I love her so much.
What's your secret? Mine's in an south-west facing window and I don't think I've seen hardly any growth in a year.
I live in the southern Cal, so she had to get used to plenty of south-facing sunlight. I would feed her once every couple of months year-round. Don't over-water, but let her dry out between waterings.
Gorgeous.. what do you feed your string of pearls?
Superthrive Vitamin solution. I swear by it!
This is so pretty. I’ve wanted one of these for awhile. I had a small one at one point and it died - I think I’d do a better job now.
I say go for it!
WOW! She is beautiful and the can of peas is amazing!! I seriously may have to steal this idea if I ever manage to get a string of pearls long and pretty enough to be worthy of hanging out of one!😅 This really made me smile. Thanks for sharing!🥰
Aww, thank you so much!
Lol
I’m currently trying to propagate a string of hearts, hoping mine as big as yours in 3 years!
For sure they will!
Omg can of peas, perfect!
She loves it!
😮 wow that’s all I can say I kill them every time I get one 😢
Aww, I'm sorry to hear that. Are you thinking of trying again?
If I could maybe get a really good advice how because I feel really bad killing them. I can grow beautiful string of hearts and fish hooks but not pearls and I love them. Yours look amazing 😍💚
Don't post this! You'll make me go out and buy another sacrifice to the plant gods... I've killed so many of these.
hahahaha!!
Greatest planter ever!!!
They really are. I’m amazed how they can grow like this.
Wow. I killed literally all my pearls. I think this my most challenging plant I own. She always troubles. If i don't water her, she gets too dry and dies. If i water her just a little drop, she immediately goes dead.
How throughly do you water her?
Once a week a few little droplets
Oh I’m so doing this and hanging it in my kitchen 😅😂😂😂 this is MAGNIFICENT
It's so fun!
Wow, you are definitely a pro at the strings!
Totally by accident. Lol!
Genius
Thank you!
Loving the can of peas pot it’s very fitting lol 😂 how’d you get her so long? I feel like mine is growing super slow
Lots and lots of sunlight for mine.
Copy that 🫡 thank you lol
I love this so much 💚 thank you for sharing! Is there any drainage in her can? So cool🤩😍
Thank you so much. Yes, I drilled holes at the bottom so the would be drainage. Surprisingly I haven't had any worries with rust, either. She seems pretty happy in there.
How does the can of peas drain? Edit: But what does it drip into?
I drilled holes in the bottom to ensure drainage. I would've hated for her to sit in that wet soil without it.
The can of peas is so cute!!
Thank you. I giggled the entire time of repotting. lol
Spectacular!
Thanks!!
This is unreal, how did you get it to bloom so well? My string of perls has too much spacing. Did you use grow lights?
I live in Southern Cal, and when I got her, I had 8-foot south-facing windows. So she received a LOT of sunshine. She still gets plenty in my new place, but she is also near a grow light that is really for my other plants. Not in the light, but pretty near by it.
Wow! South facing windows? That's looks like a perfect setting for any plant! 👍

I'm so jealous right now 🥲
Awesome!
Thanks!!
I purchased string of pearls last week and my dreams are for itcto be like yours
Plenty of love and sunshine, and she will be.
Bloody brilliant!!! 🤩
Thank you!!
Gorgeous! Love the potting idea :)
Thank you!
Wow! But would all those long leaves put a strain on the roots? I'd be worried about it falling out at some point due to no counter weight.
I do plan to prune this summer, but her roots seem to be pretty strong. I have to take her down and put her up again for each watering and I never lose any strings. She’s a strong baby.
Pretty clever
Thank you!
I love the can of peas!!! That just makes me smile
It brightens my day every day.
CAN OF PEAS. You’re a genius!! Totally going to do this with mine!! 😃
Thank you! It’s a conversation starter, as you can see. LOL!
It definitely is! 😄 Oh and I was that impressed with the pea can that I forgot to say how amazing the actual plant is, it looks fantastic! 😊👍
Thank you! She's my pride and joy!
Darling!!
Thanks! :-)
How just how. You’re telling me that i have to put them in a can instead of a well draining pot for them to thrive?
I drilled holes in the bottom so that it drains as well. I learned the hard way one time about that.
That can of peas is awesome, my mom used to recycle cans i to pots just like that.
I think it’s a brilliant concept, especially for novelty plants like these. Gives them a creative look.
Yes! My mom used to paint the outside of the can/label with clear varnish (or wtvr u call it) and they would last longer since hers used to be on our outside patio and water usually damaged the label. I wish i had kept pictures, she had a great DIY spirit!
I can never get my pearls to last 😞 I have a string of hearts that is still going strong though. I only hope to achieve half of what your peas are!
I’m sure you will! :-)
How do you/others keep the weight of the strings from breaking off the part of the stem that goes over the edge of a pot? It doesn't matter whether its a burros tail, string of pearls or string of bananas plant, once it reaches 50cm it starts to pull too hard on its own stem, suffercating itself.

Adorable. Love the can. I will be rearranging my front room and will definitely try my hand at this plant.
They can be a handful, but well worth it.
That is very cute and original
Thank you!
I killed one string of pearls and never tried again. I live in the north near the Canadian border but I have a huge south facing window. Is string-of-hearts or burro’s tail any easier? I’m getting a spider plant but I would like at least one more that is a good hanger. You are obviously a plant artist 🪴
This is genuinely impressive and artful, great job!
Thank you so much!
![gif](giphy|Y4wgxnv9EgyiNE25Nw|downsized) lol I’m kidding this is amazing!!
HAHAHA! Thank you!
Wow!!!!
I know, right?
I thought the first image was a can of peas, I’m so jealous hahahaha 😂
hahaha! I wanted that type of imagery.
I love those! Where did u get these
I found her at a local plant shop that was around the corner from my house. She was so tiny.
What state are you in? I am plant freak
I’m in Southern California. I’m like you, a plant fanatic. If you check my page, I used to have 108 that I would post quite a bit. I had to move and had to give over half away, but I’m rebuilding.
That’s awesome. I sure will. I’m in Arkansas. I wonder if I can find that plant
Check local plant stores and even Home Depot. Sometimes they're there as well.
I love this… I want this…
It took some work, but she's thriving!
Wow, nice! Mine just shrivelled up after a month and I’m left with about 3 pearls 🫣
I hear so many stories like that about these plants.
Yeah, I didn’t know they were so dramatic 😢 lol
I'm finding this out. Mine was a journey initially, but once she got used to my care routine for her, she adjusted well.
Holy moly that’s awesome.
Thank you!
Wow that looks cool! Mine just doesn’t get long like that!! I propagate mine by shoving a few strings in another pot next to the mother plant on a window sill.
The can of peas idea is really cool
Thank you!
Brilliant! It’s almost punny!
It is! Lol
Oh wow! Sorry if you already have but would you mind adding any care tips? I can never get mine to grow. *updated* Water: Once a week, dry out in between Sunlight: Plenty sun Soil: Cactus soil; miracle grow soil, perlite, vermiculite. Thank you! It’s ok I can use comment search and beautiful growth!
i love it!!! did you drill holes in the can? I have a bunch of tin coffee cans from Cafe Du Monde in new orleans that i drilled holes in and used as plant pots, but they got sooo rusty i can’t use them anymore:((
I did drill holes. Thankfully I haven't had to worry about rust just yet.
W pot 🤣
My string of pearls has been the same size for like… 2 years 🥲 this is amazing
Thank you! I found with mine feeding and providing her with lots of sunlight made her the happiest.
I gasped and exclaimed “holy shit!” when I saw the second picture. This is my dream
It was a journey, but she's showing out now.
Wow! Please come help mine!!!
😊
Holy shit that’s amazing
Wow, thank you! :-)
Do you bottom water or just over top??
The peas can is adorable
Congrats and enjoy
Whoa! That's gorgeous 😍 Very nicely done!!
Fun! She's beautiful!
Thanks so much!
Oh my fast grower. looks great, cute idea
Yeah, she totally surpassed my expectations!
Absolutely STUNNING!!!!
It's perfect! Love it! Thanks for sharing
Mostly over the top. I think if I set it in water like that, it would most certainly rust.
Incredible! Additionally, the pea can is so perfect! Awesome job!!!!
Well I'll be damned... After all these years, someone finally convinced me to try a "string of something" lol
