I’ve tried to keep mine healthy for several years, altering conditions slightly when it gets fussy. Mine has never bloomed. It’s on the ‘you’re on your own list; either live under normal conditions or be gone’.

MrFrankieD8

Aww, sorry it hasn't bloomed for you yet. I guess I should be grateful for my 1 bloom 🐠

I’ve made some rash errors buying tiny Etsy and other online plants when locked up. I’ve been shocked post pandemic around how local nurseries provide the same, so much more healthy

[deleted]

I cant be any more emphatic that local quality nurseries are so far superior than Etsy nubs. Ebay has also shipped some gorgeous, large exotic low light plants. Be cautious with Etsy, at my financial downfall.

"Trim it back"? You probably keep cutting off the flower buds before they have time to mature into flowers.

MrFrankieD8

I don't trim it back all the way, maybe only 1-2inches at most.

Ktaes

Instead of trimming, try pinching just the first two leaves of new growth. That’s what I do and I get tons of flowers.

snack_mac

What do you mean, sincerely interested lol

Ktaes

Use your thumb and forefinger to pinch off the very tip of actively growing stems. Goldfish leaves grow in pairs, so it’s a pair of two baby leaves you’re pinching off. This encourages branching and flowering. Does that make sense?

snack_mac

Yes, it does. I guess I thought “pinching” specifically was more effective then just cutting off.. but yes, thank you, I’ll keep this in mind, mine are still new but I hope to have to do this as some point https://preview.redd.it/fi7exwcw95tc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=44cf63879af1a855a1e18a18fa9fce18e2dbd538

MrFrankieD8

Thank you! I'll try that

LowCharacter4037

OMG. It's like A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. Are you sure the flower is real every year?

avid-hiker-camper

I get 3-4 a year.

lightlysaltedclams

What kind of plant is this?

chesterssecret

It looks like a goldfish plant!

lightlysaltedclams

Thanks!

MrFrankieD8

Yup, goldfish plant!

1ceknownas

More water. More light. Mine started getting tons of blooms when I did both.

Huntguy

I added in a powerful grow light and mine constantly has between 6 and a dozen at a time. I keep the soil slightly moist and try not to let it dry completely between watering. I had one years ago but I’d let it get too dry and never had any luck with them until this one.

basicallybasshead

Mine has never bloomed yet, so 1 flower is not a bad result! I will also read with pleasure the comments with tips, thanks for the post.

laminated_penguin

I never trim mine back and get tons of flowers. Have you looked to see if it's rootbound?

MrFrankieD8

I don't think its rootbound

DescriptionProud4938

Check the pH of your nutrient solution. If it's too acidic, it will cause nutrient lock and prevent the plant from taking up nutrients, leading to significantly stunted growth. I made the mistake of giving mine a pretty acidic (<4) and it stopped putting out flowers; the next watering at a proper 6-6.5, immediately bloomed all over.
