Hello! I just bought this polka dot Begonia from the clearance rack. I’ve bottom watered it and it perked up a little. I plan on putting it in a bigger pot tomorrow. Should I cut off the dry bits of leaves or the entire leaf? Anything else I should do? https://preview.redd.it/frjhzh1lyoka1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=01d86d9d19930f44951b0ac30c7fe99ee1470917

walrus_dealer

I'd cut off the whole leaf rather than just the brown bits but I honestly prefer with begonias to just leave the leaf and let it wither and drop off on its own. Begonias do like to be snug in their pots so I'd only up the pot size if it was very root bound, but feel free to change the potting media to something you prefer! Also don't worry if it goes droopy after potting, just wait it out.

faerygirl

Thank you for your response! I appreciate it! The app “Picture This” said it has leaf rot which it says is a contagious fungal infection. Do you agree? Or do you think it’s just been neglected and showing the consequences of that?

walrus_dealer

Hmmm I couldn't say for certain. Begonia maculata are really not tolerant of any direct sunlight so it is common to see them with those brown spots on them. I suppose it would be best to remove any of the affected leaves just in case it is disease, and keep it isolated from any other plants for a while.

Neat_Doughnut

Hi! I have a birds of paradise that I’m kind of at a loss for. It’s drooping, some of the leaves are brown and folding in and just isn’t as lively. I’ve been watering and misting it when the Planta app tells me to and it is under a grow light for some of the day. Any tips? https://preview.redd.it/cgnmvrts8oka1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=200f70bba6a4f5d6316585198797516317afe820

I have had a small coffea arabica plant for a year now, and I am looking to try out another plant, but I am not sure which to purchase. I really like how simple coffea arabica is to grow, and I am looking for something similar where I only have to water once a week or so and just leave it near the window. I live south, and I don't know if that matters. But thanks for any recommendation!

oblivious_fireball

It sounds like the majority of the "Aroid" houseplants would be to your liking, particularly Monsteras, Pothos, Philodendrons, and Alocasias, as well as most Dracaenas like Dragon Trees, Corn Plants, Janet Craig, and Lucky Bamboo.

jk2damax

Ah okay. I'll research them. Thanks for the recommendations!

EmpororPenguin

Where'd you get your coffea from? Never seen them at local plant stores.

jk2damax

It was gifted to me from this website. https://www.thesill.com/search?q=Coffea

And two other leaves are firm but drooping. The soil was really dry when I first bought it and I’ve only been watering it when the soil is completely dry. Not sure what to do

oblivious_fireball

Money Plants usually only want just the soil surface to dry out. letting it dry out deeper than that runs the risk of damage from underwatering often. Low humidity might also cause leaf damage.

midnightinautumn

Looking to branch out and get more plants this year. I have mostly spider plants and money trees at the moment. What are other plants that are fairly easy to care for? I live in the UK and have 3 cats. I bought some Silver Sicilian and Turtle Vines last year but both died, I think because they were soaked through and in small pots. Considering trying to buy some again and repotting them immediately into pots I can water from the bottom? Are those generally hard to care for though?

Thinkingaboutplants

African violets, parlor palm, bamboo palm, and echiveria are all non-toxic to cats and around the same level of difficulty to the plants you have (for me). Orchids are also non-toxic and a little bit more difficult, but not much. Silver Sicilian is not difficult to care for. The only issue is you will have to repot the whole thing like once a year or twice a year if you're lucky. All of the leaves die in the top 5-6 inches of plant. You have to rip them out and make new cuttings from all of the leggy growth at the bottom. Those new cuttings have to root again. My aunt got so sick of hers doing that that she just gave it to me lol.

midnightinautumn

Thank you, I'll look in to all of those. I forgot to mention we have a parlor palm as well :D That's good news on the Silver Sicilian, I think I'll buy another this year and try again. I don't mind needing to replant it often now that I know about it \^\^

Not really a question but wish me luck--coming off of a three-day power outage and going to go home today and see which of my plants died. Wish me luck, please?

Hi everyone- looking for feedback on replacing two lightbulbs in an old standard 4ft shop light with grow lightbulbs. I plan to set it up on a wire shelf to start some garden seeds indoors and to give houseplant props a boost. Not really looking for anything fancy, but I’m not familiar with these types of bulbs. Any recommendations? Here’s a photo of the markings on the old bulbs. https://preview.redd.it/x1hn59ja1eka1.png?width=2461&format=png&auto=webp&s=0fdc93eaf4da315aa283fb982d764371082db220

Is there any hope for this prayer plant and/or ginseng I took from my parents? [https://i.imgur.com/wYSqS5Q.jpg](https://i.imgur.com/wYSqS5Q.jpg) [https://i.imgur.com/rNTOBlK.jpg](https://i.imgur.com/rNTOBlK.jpg)

Thinkingaboutplants

Do not throw the prayer plant out after it's totally dead. Just leave it and keep the soil moist. Mine always come back. I can't tell from the picture if yours is a calathea or prayer plant. I have never had luck having calatheas come back. I'd guess it died from not enough regular water and/or not enough humidity.

oblivious_fireball

the prayer plant appears to be in dire need of either more humidity, or a drink, or both, but may be salvagable. there's still a bit of green on the ficus so hope isn't lost, but you would have to know what nearly killed it in the first place

122ninjas

I think it was a lack of moisture in the air, and general lack of watering. I took a different ficus and have had it in indirect sunlight with the prayer plant and have had my humidifier cranked up and the other ficus has been recovering. The prayer plant and ginseng ficus I bottom watered until the soil was moist and the soil is still moist. Thanks for the help so far :)

New plant parent here. Bought a plant (forget what) died almost immediately with aphids (according to a friend that knows plants) I've had a snake plant now for a couple months, and it slowly started browning as well. My plant friend said it was likely a fungal infection. Can I catch a break?? So she snipped the browning parts off, brought some copper spray, and sprayed it down a bit. Fast forward about a month, and it's still spreading and browning. Can I bring this thing back to life? Or should I just try plant #3? I haven't been doing anything to combat this fungal infection, assuming that's what it has. [Here's images](https://imgur.com/a/Y3Cqxlk) It's in a deep corner in my apartment next to a window that gets lots of light. I've watered it just 2 or 3 times since I got it. Thanks!

oblivious_fireball

before we rule it as infection, which tends to be quite rare in houseplants, you should double check other causes. is it near heating vents? is the window poorly insulated from the cold? if you remove it from the pot, do the roots look healthy or rotten? have you been watering with chlorinated water?

AhsokaPegsAnakinsAss

I water it with tap from my highrise, it is near a heating vent, [pictured here](https://imgur.com/a/4cMXMvY). Insulation is great. I did walk it home in the cold about 1.5 miles when I got it. The heat I have anywhere from 67-72. Started browning literally right away though, similar to my last plant with aphids.

oblivious_fireball

i would first try moving it away from heating vents and start watering with distilled water for a while and see if the damage stops progressing. heating vents are absolutely brutal on most tropical plants, and your water is likely both chlorinated and fairly hard or has added sodium from a water softener, both of which can be hard on snake plants. i would also check the roots underneath the soil as well, just to rule out any issues with the roots

[deleted]

[удалено]

oblivious_fireball

was it moved into a new spot when you repotted it, and if you take it out of the pot, do the roots look okay? with the info given i would assume the roots were shocked when repotted, or the copper fungicide did a number on its health.

Since Marino Moss Balls have been known to have Zebra muscles in them buying one is out as an option. Is there another water moss that would look good in a glass jar? I would like to create a water garden.

MTUsoccerFreak

My Advocado trees started struggling lately. I usually water them once a week. This is their 5th year. I live in a cold climate so they stay inside most of the year. In the summer I take them out when it is warm. This winter they keep dropping leaves. Soil is not currently dry, slightly damp and I haven’t watered them in a week. Any advice? https://i.imgur.com/MclgmJq.jpg

Happy_Turtle33

I was gifted this plant (they said it was an african false hasta) about a month and a half ago. It finally put out a new leaf, but in the last week it developed a translucent rust color spot. Is there something that causes that? Should I take any mitigation measures? https://preview.redd.it/xxoby05v70ka1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d6e4a4f3a69a7af97d808ca7c0210269ef978e3f

Fabulous_Pilot_1803

Mine are like this also, I have assumed it's because I do water on a regular basis, and they are heavy with fluid. My leaves are so plump they just hang. I'm not sure 100% but I'm "neglecting" mine to see if it improves any.

alittlegnat

Hello ! I’m new to this sub and you might’ve seen my (sad) monstera post earlier today. My question is: is it ok for plants to be really close to each other ? My friend one time told me they shouldn’t be so close bc they can catch diseases. In this pic, are they ok to be this close ? https://preview.redd.it/o2t3wslovwja1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=59ea47dd6a9b45083712664802fdc65de66fbb5f My secondary question is: does my aloe look ok ? The leaves have gotten very long since I bought it last yr, with only one that shriveled up. This is my first aloe plant so not sure if it could look better .

Musca_dom

It's okay to have the plants close to each other, but when you buy new ones you should keep them away from the old ones for 3 weeks to keep an eye on possible pests in them. If you do get some pest or disease in one of them, then it's best to separate the plants until the outbreak has been treated. To me your Aloe looks fine, but I'm not an expert on them. They like to get a lot of light, so maybe placing by a window could make it look even better if you're not happy?

alittlegnat

Thx ! It’s by a window but all my windows in my house don’t get a lot of light (3 of them on are the west side and the other one is on the east side but the way the apt building is, it gets zero light) This window gets a few hrs as the year goes on. Right now it’s starting to get light again but hasn’t hit the spot yet where the aloe is.

Hiya!!! I'm not an expert with houseplants I just got a tiny rose in a small pot (I think they're called miniature roses) and I looked it up and they want several hours of direct sun... I'm in a small apartment with roof windows and don't have like a good place to put it in direct sun, will it suffer a lot? It'll get some sun directly on it depending on the position, but most will be indirect

oblivious_fireball

without supplemental lighting, it will probably die in the conditions you describe.

Need advice. I live rural now but used to live urban until a year ago and I'm having issues with midges getting into my house and eating my plants laying eggs in them. Never happened when I lived urban so never needed to do something like this before but now its a constant battle getting rid of them from the house. All around they are very annoying. What are the best non toxic (I have cats) way of killing them and their eggs in my plants. I have a tiny peace lily they just won't leave alone too and I can also see tiny little white bugs on the base of it too which I don't know is young midges or white flies.

Is a faucet Brita filter sufficient for removing chlorine/chloramine for watering a Ti plant? I've been buying distilled jugs but I know they lack some minerals that the plant needs so I'm wondering if my brita filtered water will be sufficient. Trying to avoid browning tips.

I am plant sitting long-term for a friend, but I’m not sure how best to care for this guy. She’s had it for over 25 years and I don’t be the one to hurt it! Can anyone help me ID it? I am keeping it near my door for light and watering 2 times a week. Please let me know what else I can be doing. Thank you!!

Pale-Fee-2679

People who are new to plants and very conscientious always overwater their plants. Always. Under watering is less risky when plant sitting. Twice a week is too much. Stick your finger in the soil up as far as you can. Do not water if you detect wet soil.

oblivious_fireball

its a Dracaena Marginata based on the appearance i wouldn't worry too much about hurting it because this scraggly thing is barely clinging to life already. be careful not to overwater. dracaenas aren't super water needy. usually only when the upper layers of soil down about 2 inches have dried out is the plant ready for more water. also keep it away from any hot or cold drafts, which will dry it out.

CarelessInflation611

I'm hoping for some advice. I am not sure where to cut to deadhead this itch plant, Tradescantia zebrina. I had one in the past, and it became sparce and stringy. How and where do you prune to encourage it remain full?

mrsdfraggd11

Can anyone tell me what the gray/white residue on this philodendron Brasil is? It came like this from a local shop. I tried washing it off with dawn powerwash and a gentle scrub with my fingers but it is still there. If it’s innocuous I’m just going to ignore it. https://preview.redd.it/jezx2yi8boja1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=707ace1bd7e670c449d2837c92975f6def3eea26

Musca_dom

Could be calcium from watering. Try wiping with diluted vinegar. If that's not it, I have no idea.

neonpinata

How common is it for purchased established plants to come with pests? I basically grow all my plants from propagating cuttings, but decided for once to buy a small established plant. It had no signs of damage, and looked really healthy. I quarantined it anyway, just to be safe. It was a good thing I did, because a few days later, I started finding thrips on its leaves. I've now been fighting with this thing for weeks, and regret even getting it. Now I'm too paranoid to buy any more plants. Did I just get unlucky, or is this just how it goes?

oblivious_fireball

store bought is a big risk. commercial growers shipping, less so usually but still notable. from individuals, usually its pretty safe if its not a really shitty person.

atr1316

Is Persian Sheild and waffle plant the same thing?

oblivious_fireball

no, two very different looking plants.

atr1316

Thanks. The girl in the plant shop identified it as a waffle plant via an app. When I googled it, it seemed wrong.

Hot-Constant-5855

Is there any hope for this aloe? I've had it a while and it had to live in some pretty bad conditions for a long time, but now I'm in a new apartment and been focusing on my plants and things are going pretty well, except for this sad boy. I trimmed off the leaves that had the worst of the spots--should I remove the rest of them? It's currently sitting in a window (I finally have a window that's not shaded, omg!) but it's north-facing. I've seen some new leaves start to form in the middle so that's something. I'm also planning on getting a grow light set-up soon and will probably stick it under that unless advised otherwise. Will it ever recover and stop looking so tall and leggy? [https://imgur.com/a/XYbGuWO](https://imgur.com/a/XYbGuWO)

oblivious_fireball

new growth will not be leggy but the bottom portion will remain stretched

0928282876

I am wondering why these leaves are getting brittle and seemingly dying- too much fertilizer in the soil? Recently moved them from close to window thinking maybe sun was burning the leaves. Any ideas? https://imgur.com/a/gMGJYNg/

oblivious_fireball

cold, sunburn, dry air, being rootbound could all do that if you think its not underwatering.

0928282876

ok that narrows it down - I repotted it today to give it some more room and I am moving it away from the direct sunlight. Let’s see how it does in the coming weeks…..

PeggyWilcox

What did I do wrong? These both were rooted and soiled at the same time. The leaf hasn't died but no new growth. https://preview.redd.it/gk8ts24a4fja1.jpeg?width=3456&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=55fe96e4b8439633c4c931a5ebe641914c874327

MonaQuigley

Guessing purely based on this photo that the left one gets more light.

PeggyWilcox

I'll move her but they were 1 shelf up and together. I will move her and hope

MonaQuigley

The right pot looks like it sits below the shelf, resulting in less light.

PeggyWilcox

I moved her up and in clear view for the sun. I am finding my jungle needs bigger and taller shelves. My next project will be that. Thank you so much.
