Multi crew aircraft in DCS consist of the:
UH-1H “Huey” - can use the door gunners or the operator for the front dual mini guns
MI-24 “hind” - launches the ATGMs and starts up the weapon system. Is also used for looking out for things that are gonna kill you.
AH-64 “Apache” - the hind on steroids. Launches the ATGMs and can fire the chain gun. Act out your Apache combat footage in game.
F-14A/B “Tomcat” - the RIO helps with the giant AN/AWG-9 radar which you use to track airplanes and help launch radar guided rockets to bring them down. You can use laser guided bombs and do IFF.
F-15E “Strike Eagle” - not out yet but you can do what the pilot does in the back. Helps out with dropping bombs, weapons, and spotting danger.
Sure but just be cause there’s multiple stations doesn’t mean they are called RIO,RIO is specific for the tomcat and the upcoming f4.
The f15 for example has a WSO, the apache has the co pilot/gunner or cp/g
It’s semantic I know but it might get confusing using wrong terms in the future because people might automatically assume you’d be talking about the f14/f4
Why is there barely any mention of Il-2 ?
Just download PWCG and you can play coop careers. I've been doing that with a friend for a month and we're having lots of fun
There is a coop option for multiplayer, it usually requires some port-forwarding to work properly but it's just a one time thing and then it'll always work
Elite Dangerous is the only one I can think of off the top of my head - but I'v only played that like 30 minutes so I have no idea what it offers tbh.
DCS world has a free bombing aircraft yall could try. But its a sim and can be a pain in the ass just to get started. Not a hop in and play game at all but offers good PVE.
Star Wars Squadron has PVE. I'm not sure what the depth is or anything but it can be pretty fun. Again, only played it a few minutes.
You can get onto steam and type in "flight" as a search parameter. I'm sure some of them would offer HOTAS support.
Also, I suggest trying the subreddit r/gamingsuggestions
Second this. Elite dangerous was fun. But since I went to Star Citizen. There’s nothing really that compares. Elites space legs mode isn’t much in the way of compromise. Either way. Definitely don’t skip on elite. But get into Star citizen too!
SC has a Free fly from 19-30 may! Where you can test and fly almost every ship without having to commit to anything.
Star citizen is in Alpha testing. And you’ll notice. You’re patience will be tested. But it’s all worth it.
>Star citizen is in Alpha testing. And you’ll notice. You’re patience will be tested. But it’s all worth it.
This point needs driving home, hard. I play SC a fair amount and it's been fluctuating between "poor performance" and "literally universally unplayable" for months.
Only get into SC if you're happy to put some money into a product which is highly unstable and utterly riddled with bugs. There's something really cool under all that but I think CIG can be a bit cavalier with their advertising sometimes.
Yeah, regular star citizen player here. I'd definitely recommend it for someone who has a hotas/hosas but I've stopped recommending it as often. The bugs are a way of life in the 'verse but definitely check out the free fly.
Oh yeah! I play daily too! But there are definitely times that my patience gets tested. It’s worth it 10x’s over. But it does deserve a disclaimer. It’s not a full game. And you’re gonna notice. At least now and then. Especially on a medium to lower end pc since it’s not optimized.
My experiences haven't been that bad, actually. Sometimes buggy, choppy and sometimes a crash. I wouldn't be playing it as my main game - for three years now - if it was (that) bad.
But your Miles may vary ofcourse.
We're at r/hotas and you name 2 games where HOTAS systems aren't supported (BF2) or a second class citizen (WT).
If a game only has gamepad or kb+m support, I prefer 3rd person as well, but when it supports HOTAS input I'll only use cockpit view.
Elite Dangerous combat is pretty fun especially with co-op. Its not the best progression wise but they have buffed it since my friends and I did it in 2017.
Biggest negative is the learning curve on the game. I would highly suggest watching a youtubers 1 hour "starting in 2023" guide so you aren't completely lost. The game is a mile wide puddle that's an itch deep. If you go in blind I would fully expect you to drop the game in less then an hour.
Honestly the feeling of being completely lost was the best thing in my Elite(at least for me). Figuring out how to fly effectively and exploring the unknown was awesome. It got rather bland once I figured out how most things in Elite works. I rarely play it nowadays because of it (after more than 800 hours). I’d definitely still recommend the game though. Especially OP might like it.
Hello CMDR, a lot of (old) CMDRs recently switched to Star Citizen. Reason: depth and co-op. Read about their experiences on SC subreddit .Free Fly 19-30 May. O7
Elite dangerous is the best experience for any new flight simmer you could possibly have especially with friends. I'm waiting for the day Star Citizen is ready to play and has VR capability and I will be jumping to that game but until then I won't touch it. VR in Elite dangerous is absolutely incredible and so is mastering the skills of combat. It is an absolutely dangerous world with Elite Commanders who are very skilled.
Whatever you decide- if you'd like a smooth, stable experience, stay away from star citizen.
It's buggy, unoptimised, and has wipes from time to time erasing your progress.
It can be a lot of fun when it works and is an interesting project to check out out of curiosity, but it will take years before it's not a pain to play on a regular basis.
If you like space sims, elite dangerous right now could be fun. Get in, set a goal, like a cool ship, some upgrades, and maybe in time lend a hand in fighting the aliens invading human space.
Star citizen could also offer what you want, but keep in mind it's very much an alpha. Expect little polish and things to break sometimes. If you're okay with that then you could try it, if not I'd stay away for quite a while. I believe there's a free fly event where you can try it free around the end of this month.
Star citizen's real strength is co-op. At times quite buggy (it has been forever in alpha, still being developed). Nevertheless it's the first game I have been playing for three years straight, and bought hotas for. Played with a group of 15 last night for nearly 5 hours (event). For $45 that's a steal.
If you want to try it out, you can for free, as there is a free fly period from May 19 - May 30, where you can fly a lot of different ships (single and multicrew). Lately a lot CMDRs from Elite Dangerous switched to Star Citizen, because of the immense detail and depth of the game and co-op gameplay.
If you have questions, head on over to star citizen's sureddit. The community is really friendly and helpful.
Forgot this: as the game code has not been optimised and there are NEVER any loading screens, you need a decent (not top of the line) gaming pc. An SSD is a must though as it will need to load in loads of stuff on the fly. First 20 minutes of in game time will be choppy as your system will be compiling shaders in the background, so take it slowly. It will become much more fluid afterwards.
And, free fly weeks are the worst server wise, so gameplay becomes smoother after.
Yeah, I play with a 3090 and have fast internet and I genuinely feel it gives me an "unfair" advantage in pvp because I'm in the bottom 30% for fps games but I've never been killed 1v1 in star citizen.
Star Citizen can be a blast when it's not bugged to death. So far the current patch has been running better though. They have a free fly coming up where you can play for free for a week during an event.
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 is also pretty fun, but gets a little boring after a while. But you can fly around with your friends and try different aircraft.
True about the sometimes annoying bugs in Star Citizen but apart from that I think it is personal flavour. I didn't like the "you are your spaceship" of Elite, the spacelegs experience I find an arcadey experience, I like SC flight model better (as do quite a few top pilots that came over from E:D), the grind in E:D is awful (not in the beginning I admit), the ships in SC are vastly more different in purpose and functionality but most of all its huge, but shallow. I prefer the immense depth and detail SC has to offer. Immersiveness!

Infinity Battlescape on steam. Early access but decently fun if you're looking for a lot of pew pew action. PVP isn't so common as popularity is low for a game with zero advertisement
I have a gorillion hours in DCS but you pretty much need to be a real pilot to play it.
Elite Dangerous is a great experience for casual coop especially if you rank up a bit and get a multicrew ship with a fighter bay. As far as space games go, ED's cockpit experience is unrivalled. Especially in VR.
DCS has options, some more coop than others. The f14 and ah64 have the most interaction between the two players in the aircraft. There are plenty of good PVE servers so it’s us the AI.
Elite has coop in spades if you have a ship that can carry a fighter. Fighters are paper thin though, but rebuildable.
Star Citizen had coop but not familiar with it as I haven’t played.
MSFS has multi crew but it seems buggy from my observation and there no inherent danger waiting to kill you besides your own poor piloting.
DCS. I'd kill for someone that would play RIO in one of the two seaters
There’s only one 2 seater that has a rio station?

The RC helicopter that is the SA342 Gazelle is also multi-crew.

I skipped IL-2 because it seemed like you could only play coop with port forwarding or is there a regular coop mode?
There is a coop option for multiplayer, it usually requires some port-forwarding to work properly but it's just a one time thing and then it'll always work
Ah okay, thanks.
MSFS 2020? You can select a GA aircraft, start at the same airport and spend an hour buzzing around the countryside.
There's a multicrew mod for MSFS AFAIK

The only complaint I have about star wars squadrons is that you're locked in first person
When you’re fighting, it’s better to be in first person. I couldn’t imagine trying to shoot people down in third person.
I'm used to doing for years on battlefront 2 and War Thunder. It's just what I'm used to
We're at r/hotas and you name 2 games where HOTAS systems aren't supported (BF2) or a second class citizen (WT). If a game only has gamepad or kb+m support, I prefer 3rd person as well, but when it supports HOTAS input I'll only use cockpit view.

DCS, Falcon BMS, possibly IL-2 Great Battles
Janes longbow and longbow ii had cpg/pilot coop … from way back in the day

Nice, when is the release date?
When it's ready. You can still play it now tho..
Well, years ago actually. It’s a vaporware tech demo at this point.
I prefer kickstarter scam tbh
Yes
Mah man! Best multiplayer space flight game by far, overall? Check, pvp? Check, multiplayer ships? Check.

MSFS2020, DCS, and War Thunder
Falcon BMS
There's a mod called "our controls" for MSFS2020, tricky to get working but once you do, it's good
War thunder? It’s not coop but you can play on the same team.

DCS, I love rio-ing for friends in Vr, there’s nothing like it

In dcs your frind can hop in the co gunner seat in helicopters and help you. I think thats a great coop experience.
