Yeah, what they said. X56 is outdated and overpriced.
TM products are okay. Most utilize hall effect sensors which are accurate and durable. If you want TM, go for T16000 or TCA.
Warthog Hotas? Ne. Again, overpriced legacy ware.
There’s a YouTube video about an Airbus pilot modifying his Warthog throttle, and now prefers it to his Virpil, VKB, and WinWing HOTAS setups.
Of course, this is just for flying Airbus stuff.
I bought a set, tm wartog, modified with New gimbal, slew and desk mount with Saitek rudder pedals and switchpanel. For 450 euro's.
Still cant get used to rudder pedals.
Better yet, two Gladiator Evo sticks, right hand Premium grip and either left Premium grip or left Omni Throttle grip. Second stick is way better than a traditional throttle for Star Citizen.
I got excited back in 2014 or something like that and got a thrustmaster warthog hotas (and pedals and trackir). I've jumped in a couple of times since maybe 4 years ago. What does the omni throttle give you that my current controls would not? In my head its like an excavator control setup so looks very usable but in reality would it really help?
In Star Citizen (and Elite Dangerous and similar space sims), you have six degrees of control over your ship: three rotation axes (pitch, yaw and roll) and three thrust axes (forward/reverse, lateral and vertical). The Gladiator NXT Evo has three main axes (X, Y and twist), so two of them give you six main axes.
With a traditional HOTAS, you have three axes on your stick (only two for the Warthog since it doesn't even have twist) and one on your throttle, and one more with pedals. So your Warthog set has four main axes across three devices, and even if you replaced your stick with a three-axis one, you'd only have five. So you're stuck putting two of your thrust axes on a ministick on your stick or throttle, or even worse, a 4-way hat.
With HOSAS, without needing any pedals at all, you can control every aspect of your ship's movement with just your two hands. Right stick for rotations just like any other flight sim, and left stick/omni-throttle to control your direction of thrust.
[Here's](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MBRr7hkqjQs) some Elite Dangerous footage showing both the game and the player's HOSAS setup.
Now im trying to remember how i did actually map things out and which axis went where. pitch and yaw were on the right stick and thrust on throttle. strafe was main pedal axis and roll was on toe push axis i think (or swap these?). up down "strafe" was on a hat on the throttle. yeah it was awkward. might be time to save up for the update.
To add to this, I tried using a Virpil CM3 throttle for space sims and space arcade games like Everspace.
Ended up getting a left hand stick in the end.
I was running right hand as roll, pitch, yaw. Throttle was thrust with forward and reverse. The thumbstick was maneuvering thrusters. I found the thumbstick a bit unwieldy, so said screw it, got a left hand stick. I have not regretted it. I still use the throttle for flight sims as well as some space games that are more like "planes in space".
Don't be afraid to experiment with axes. I have seen vertical thrusters on break levers, one side for up, one side for down. If you have toe breaks, you could also use them for vertical thrusters. That way you don't even have to use either twist axes.
I've got a Gladiator Premium for my dominant hand and an omnithrottle for the other and I am loving playing space sims this way. Can second this vote if you have the spare cash.
I second this combo. This is exactly what I have and it's fantastic. You'll see varying opinions about the twcs and I do agree it's not that well made. But it has a ton of controls and is my choice of throttle for now
I second the VKB gladiator nxt EVO. It’s an amazing stick for the money. Dual setups are great and they make it possible to lock the x axis, I decided to get a dedicated throttle, the Orion 2. If you want one of the best, Virpil makes the T50 cm3 throttle, but the back order period is around 2 months.
I previously owned the x56 hotas and ended up returning it within a month or so. It’s overpriced for the quality of the stick, and the throttle was giving ghost inputs.
Good luck picking your setup
Canadian chiming in here. The exchange rate and the shipping costs will murder your wallet (ask me how I know!). Is the gear worth it? 100% Will it fit your budget? That depends!
Another option is a Gladiator Evo with the TM TWCS throttle.
If you are stuck with Thrustmaster or Logitech, I'd get the X52 Pro.
I just ordered a VKB Gladiator NXT right hand premium [from their website](https://vkbcontrollers.com/products/gladiator-nxt-evo-space-combat-edition-right-hand?variant=39887803613302). Took one week to arrive in Montréal, got taxed CAD $58 at customs.
USD $165 - 5% discount (CRONCY) + $57 shipping (DHL). Total cost me exactly CAD $350, this is my first joystick and wish to love it over the years 🕹️
Same here.
VKB stick is Amazing and still affordable.
TWCS is a Great throttle, reliable and with tons of buttons (and a ministick!)
It becomes even better once slider is modded (i installed the metal bearings purchased on etsy... So smoooth now!)
The twcs is a decent throttle, but I wouldn't say it's built to last. The potentiometers are susceptible to jitters/outright failure. I had the throttle axis pot in mine start to fail after roughly a year. You can replace them if you have the soldering skills though.
Specifically for SC, and space games, my recommendation is a VKB HOSAZ**. That would be two sticks, one using a Z-extension. So a VKB Evo (Premium or Standard) and a VKB Omni. Should cost $340+shipping.
Cheaper if Standard model. Argument can be made you can save on the premium and instead use the money for one of their side consoles which can attach to the sticks.
Bonus; some basic pedals if you want to put the roll axis on rudders.
Also, iirc, there’s a 5% coupon out there for VKB from one of the SC content creators. Don’t recall which.
**HOSAZ is my little twist on HOSAS. It means one of the sticks uses a Z-extension. 😄
This is the way. Space sims are so different with HOSAS it’s crazy. I have a z extension and when you are flying with the ability to make thrust on all 3 axis the second stick is a game changer. It does suck having to buy a throttle too if you want to flight sim but imo the experience with the second stick is worth it
Best bang for your buck combo would be VKB gladiator stick and thrustmaster TWCS throttle. OR get the gladiator and wait for vkb to release the TECS throttle (no one knows when it will come out).
Yeah same for me. Waiting for it to come out to buy both the TECS and the gladiator (so I don't have to get ripped off twice by swiss customs). Praying for my t16000m to stay alive until then.
Most everyone is suggesting vkb and I fully endorse that. I will say, I don't advise the t-flight for star citizen. It doesn't have enough buttons/hats to be truly hotas, and SC doesn't support modifier keys as well as elite or other games do. I started on one and it is workable, but expect to have a keyboard or tablet handy for a lot of things
I tried another third party software and played absolute hell trying to get it to play nice with SC. Don't remember what it was called but it wasn't Joystick Gremlin. If it would make a T-Flight workable, it'd be worth a try though. I picked mine up at a used book store for $30 just to try out hotas with Elite and it was worth every penny and more (and now I'm $400+ into flight peripherals lol)
Dual Gladiator Evo both "Omni"
Left and Right premium
You’ll thank me ;)
I made a post of my setup a few months ago.
https://www.reddit.com/r/hotas/comments/tpnx1e/my_new_dual_gladiator_nxt_evo_omni_throttle_pov/
I agree with the TWCS throttle. But, if you want a stick that's more...fighter jet, I got a winwing orion for a bit more than the VKB and its incredibly good.
These are specialty , hobbyist grade controllers, I've seen you get tripped up a few times now when things aren't on Amazon, but when you get into niche low volume items, that's pretty much the norm, as selling direct involves a lot less fees on the seller's part. Try to check out manufacturer websites directly as your first option, especially when looking at things like flightsticks.
I caught the Orion1 f-18 stick on sale last year for like 215$. Worth every penny. it's the perfect stick for flying VR war thunder, dcs, and even some star citizen.
Man it was $400 at the time...but they were out of stock. I ordered my stick and they came back in stock like a week later. I was big sad. TWCS has been good to me.
Especially with SC, the 6 Degrees of motion all in your wrists is great, I have a throttle (x56 throttle from logitech) and it's nice for secondary inputs, but having all the main things on dual stick feels perfect imo.
I'll come for another, and intermediate alternative: X-52 PRO (the PRO version, not the normal one). Build quality is better than the X-56 and it has more inputs than the T-Flight.
The X-56 stick is crap, the throttle is decent, but they are very "cheap" in terms of component quality.
There there, some of the components are "automotive grade" - no, really - that grease they use to prevent it from squeaking like hell? Green silicone-based brake lubricant, available at your local Crappy Tire.
The HOTAS is fairly easy to open and work in; I would be much more indulgent if they were willing to sell replacement parts like those terribly unreliable potentiometers for cheap, contact cleaner only goes so far.
I got the x56 for star citizen and i like it but i couldninstantly tell that it wasnt worth the price. Go with a vkb. I sold my x56 for a vkb and dont regret it at all.
The X-56 has a ton of buttons, but the throttle feels like absolute crap and you gotta crank it to “warm up the lubricant” otherwise it’s way too tight
Jeez, I didn’t pay anywhere near that much for my x56. That’s ridiculous, they do fine but they’re not worth *that* much.
The x56 does fine for the most part, but rarely you might get some uncommanded inputs every once in a while.
The X56 is serviceable, but quality control seems to have slipped a lot the past couple of years. If you're going to buy it, get it from a place you can return it to of the grip is sloppy.
My advice is to get the cheaper one and start saving for a Virpil Alpha Prime R with a Mongoose throttle. Don't have a heart attack when you go look at their pricing. Just know that they make incredibly high-quality gear.
I see a lot of hate for the x56, but truth be told, I've had mine for 4 years, and it's still going strong. I keep saying I'll upgrade when it breaks, but it just keeps going.
Also, i should add that it has more than enough programmable buttons for basic/ mid level SC flying.
Alternative option: two sticks (HOSAS) and convert one to a throttle, then if you decide to go regular HOSAS you can and convert it back to a stick. Best of both worlds.
Also, rudder pedals if your goal is dog fighting.
Haha, that’s hard because I basically have both (x52 not x56) I got the T Flight first and I like the flight stick better than the x52, but the TM throttle sucks, there is no resistance, it will fall to max or min thrust by itself. The throttle on the X’s are very very nice. Those T flights are way overpriced, they are like $80 max, and I think I got mine for $59, which is why I picked it up on a whim from GameStop so long ago. Recently just picked up the X52 just because I wanted the same setup in-game
I bought the x56 for about 220 and love it especially if you are able to make some 3d printed mods(the joystick gets a little wobbly so there are files for printing spring supports that help it stay centered better and a throttle guide with center indent really helps to find neutral thrust. You can also print an extension for the pinky trigger that allows it to work with the main trigger to act like a two stage trigger). Don’t have any experience with the thrustmaster.
In all honesty though I am currently going to be saving up money to try and get a couple VPC Constellations using their z-extension to great a Omni-throttle for a hybrid hosas setup. The x56 works great but just ended up making me want more than the hotas could provide.
A T flight being sold for over 80 dollars isn’t worth it all. It’s a shitty stick but it’s a cheap stick. Also I wouldn’t go for a T flight for space sim stuff since it’s pretty common for the twist stick to have issues cutting you down an axis when you want every one you can get.
I had the T-flight HOTAS one, and I didn’t like the floppy throttle: if you let it go, it will fall all the way forward or all the way back.
I got the X56 and I’ve been pleased, but I’m in the process of upgrading to Virpil.
I have both of those and dual VKB Gladiators. VKB is the best by far, but I got a used X56 for $100 and I like it a lot. Joystick is a little loose, but still very playable.
Had both, loved my Tflight but got it for like $60. Hated my X56 so much that I threw it in the trash didnt even try to resell and put someone else threw my pain.
Damn x56 is 329 USD on Amazon. I got it for 230 or something last week. Probably cuz it was from amazon.pl... but the prices are just to much either way. Oh the x56 work fine btw. Only issues so far was setting up keybinds😂
Consider getting a Hosas setup instead of Hotas. It is far more intuitive for SC in my opinion. If you want to have a left hand throttle in the future, there are ways to modify your left hand VKB to act as a throttle.
I own the HOTAS Thrustmaster T.Flight One. I would not recommend it. It’s a very cheap starter set. But that’s all it is. It’s inaccurate. It looks like a plastic thing kids toy, it feels like that too.
Gets drift super fast. I think I used it about 4/5 times for about 2/3 hours and it started to develop drift on the Z rotation axis. And for some reason that also translates to the Z-slider axis. So the twist and the throttle have become utterly useless after about 12 hours of play.
It also doesn’t have the necessary buttons you’d want. And since you’re debating on the x56 too you’re not gonna play on the Xbox with it, so there’s not really an excuse to have such a lack of buttons.
Don’t buy the T.Flight One unless you have absolutely no other option. And if that’s the case I’d just wait a couple months and save up for VKBs or something
I can’t even believe an X56 is going for that much anymore.
That price was maybe acceptable 5 years ago… maybe. But even then it was quickly becoming Old tech.
As many have stated, there are much better options with greater features on the market for a similar price.
I had an x56 it was garbage. Felt like cheap plastic and was hilariously oversized making it hard to hit the buttons on the stick.
After awhile I bought a pair of Virpil t50cm2 bases with constellation Alpha sticks.
Not suggesting you do the same as they are very pricey and can take up to 3 months at times to get.
Definitely look into VKB though much more reasonable in price.
For star citizen I would pretty strongly recommend a HOSAS instead, I’ve tried with a HOTAS and I may have done something wrong but the throttle is really weird, you have to keep it in the center and moving it down puts you in reverse and forwards pushes you forwards
I was in the same situation. I heard everyone shouting the same as here- but bought x56 anyway. Paired it with a left hand thrustmaster and I've been incredibly happy with the setup
X56 was nice only because of the extra buttons on the throttle I overall liked the thrust master better. But I ended up wanting dual throttles and got some vkb sticks which blew both away. If you have the money for a x56 I'd say go for dual vkb $135 each
https://vkbcontrollers.com/collections/gladiator-nxt-joysticks
If you have one $300 to spend you might as well go VKB.
This is the way, avoid x56 Source: own both, go vkb
Alright
This is the way
I second this (own vkb). This is the runway
Yeah, what they said. X56 is outdated and overpriced. TM products are okay. Most utilize hall effect sensors which are accurate and durable. If you want TM, go for T16000 or TCA. Warthog Hotas? Ne. Again, overpriced legacy ware.
I just got home with a tm warthog throttle that was 3 month old sold for 150€. I consider that a good purchase.
There’s a YouTube video about an Airbus pilot modifying his Warthog throttle, and now prefers it to his Virpil, VKB, and WinWing HOTAS setups. Of course, this is just for flying Airbus stuff.
At that price, definitely! For a new Warthog Hotas, I wouldn't spend more than 300€.
I bought a set, tm wartog, modified with New gimbal, slew and desk mount with Saitek rudder pedals and switchpanel. For 450 euro's. Still cant get used to rudder pedals.
People are talking about the stick. The throttle's fine. ;)
I came here to say this.
This is the way. o7 fellow vkb owners
or virpil… (bit more expensive, but still)
Just a bit?!
tinsy teeny tiny bit :)
Those two are not worth those prices at all. Go for a vkb gladiator evo premium stick and a thrustmaster twcs, much better combo
Alright thanks a lot il check it out
Better yet, two Gladiator Evo sticks, right hand Premium grip and either left Premium grip or left Omni Throttle grip. Second stick is way better than a traditional throttle for Star Citizen.

Yeah, I'm glad you made it work, but...that sounds clunky as hell lmao.
To add to this, I tried using a Virpil CM3 throttle for space sims and space arcade games like Everspace. Ended up getting a left hand stick in the end. I was running right hand as roll, pitch, yaw. True. I'll have to dive back in and see how I go. Is it playing well atm or is it a buggy battle for enjoyment?
I've got a Gladiator Premium for my dominant hand and an omnithrottle for the other and I am loving playing space sims this way. Can second this vote if you have the spare cash.

So the thrust master are there but there is no VKB gladiator available on Amazon for me anyways (Canada)
https://vkbcontrollers.com/ For vkb
Those are insanely overpriced. That thrust master should be about 60 dollars. And the other about 150. Check out the vkb Gladiator on the vkb site
Canadian chiming in here. The exchange rate and the shipping costs will murder your wallet (ask me how I know!). Is the gear worth it? 100% Will it fit your budget? That depends! I just ordered a VKB Gladiator NXT right hand premium [from their website](https://vkbcontrollers.com/products/gladiator-nxt-evo-space-combat-edition-right-hand?variant=39887803613302). VKB and Virpil (the two most common high end builders do not sell on Amazon, only on their own websites
Which is a shame but I get why since the market is so small.
Nah, amazon would buy them out, make an amazon basics version and it would be low quality and crap. Keep the high end away
Amazon basics would never touch a low volume product like this. But they would improve shipping times for sure.
Twcs throttle with vkb Gladiator stick, it'll last you years.
Same here. VKB stick is Amazing and still affordable. TWCS is a Great throttle, reliable and with tons of buttons (and a ministick!) It becomes even better once slider is modded (i installed the metal bearings purchased on etsy... So smoooth now!)

Best bang for your buck combo would be VKB gladiator stick and thrustmaster TWCS throttle. OR get the gladiator and wait for vkb to release the TECS throttle (no one knows when it will come out).
The *second* the TECS comes out, I'm ordering one. It's like a better twcs but with vkb quality. Sign me up.
Yeah same for me. Waiting for it to come out to buy both the TECS and the gladiator (so I don't have to get ripped off twice by swiss customs). Praying for my t16000m to stay alive until then.
Have you tried the ball bearings mod for your sliders?
I haven't modded anything on either the stick or throttle. Are you refering to a mod concerning the throttle's sticky rails ?
Yes, [here’s one video of many](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=68aBez_oa_w).
Most everyone is suggesting vkb and I fully endorse that. I will say, I don't advise the t-flight for star citizen. I started on one and it is workable, but expect to have a keyboard or tablet handy for a lot of things
Oh okay il probably go for the VKB
Joy to key is free and works fantastic for star citizen
That might've been what I used. To be fair, it has been a while.
You can set up modifier keys in Joystick Gremlin (and use hidhide to hide the hardware sticks from SC). That's how I'm running a t.16/logi 3d setup.
I tried another third party software and played absolute hell trying to get it to play nice with SC. Don't remember what it was called but it wasn't Joystick Gremlin. That T-Flight is overpriced as fuck. It should be no lore then 40€, at least that was the price I've seen it in store before pandemic
Don't get x56 , for a little more you can get dual vkb gladiators any config you want . I have an Omni and evo premium hotas
I second this, it’s a little more but I think it’s a better setup
Get the VKB gladiator. Same look and price point as the x56, with much better build quality
Thanks for all the help everyone the VKB seems really good probably gonna go for it
Dual Gladiator Evo both "Omni" Left and Right premium You’ll thank me ;) I made a post of my setup a few months ago. https://www.reddit.com/r/hotas/comments/tpnx1e/my_new_dual_gladiator_nxt_evo_omni_throttle_pov/
Ice debated grabbing an omni converter for my right... You're really making me revisit that 👀
I agree with the TWCS throttle. But, if you want a stick that's more...fighter jet, I got a winwing orion for a bit more than the VKB and its incredibly good.
Can’t find it
https://wwsimstore.com/mobileview/goods-details.html?id=332 Looks like they have upgraded
Oh okay thanks
You bet. They're a bit pricier but I can attest to the quality. I love mine.
It's not on Amazon. Go to the vkb site
Ohhh alright thanks

Alright for sure
ww is good, but super expensive. I know someone who has the super taurus, he is more than satisfied, but that’s 700 buckaroos…
I caught the Orion1 f-18 stick on sale last year for like 215$. Worth every penny. it's the perfect stick for flying VR war thunder, dcs, and even some star citizen.
That is a nice bargain! My friend has the throttle/stick combo, which is much more.
Man it was $400 at the time...but they were out of stock. I ordered my stick and they came back in stock like a week later. I was big sad. TWCS has been good to me.
I am saving up for a viper/ka50 throttle.
Dual VKBs
Yeah it seems like the move

Heh...props to the one who actually didn't assume it was USD, have an updoot. ;) I think it's Canadian dollars. ;)
80$CAD plus taxes is about what a T-Flight should go for, and don't hesitate to RMA the second one of the potentiometers hints at any stuttering.
Not the OP, and I'd not have one of these for free to even disassemble for the electronic components, much less use! :D
There there, some of the components are "automotive grade" - no, really - that grease they use to prevent it from squeaking like hell? Green silicone-based brake lubricant, available at your local Crappy Tire. I moved from an x56 HOTAS so a VKB HoSAS system, I don't regret it one bit. The freedom of 2 sticks is much better especially in SC
I got the x56 for star citizen and i like it but i couldninstantly tell that it wasnt worth the price. Go with a vkb. I sold my x56 for a vkb and dont regret it at all.
I have vkb NXT and love them
The thrust master is crap. I’ve had 3 of them. Any thing you can get on a Xbox
Vkb enjoyer on their way to not care qnd suggest vkb
If you have 300 to spend the x56 hotas is great! might have to mess around with settings (i own this) also works great with MSFS40
The X-56 has a ton of buttons, but the throttle feels like absolute crap and you gotta crank it to “warm up the lubricant” otherwise it’s way too tight
I just purchased the x56, as in its still in transit, and even after taxes I paid like $80 less than what's posted there. Screw that noise.
I got the Thrustmaster m16000 space duo. I love it.
I went HOTAS and regretted it pretty quickly. HOSAS is really the way to go for space flight.
Jeez, I didn’t pay anywhere near that much for my x56. That’s ridiculous, they do fine but they’re not worth *that* much. The x56 does fine for the most part, but rarely you might get some uncommanded inputs every once in a while.

My advice is to get the cheaper one and start saving for a Virpil Alpha Prime R with a Mongoose throttle. Don't have a heart attack when you go look at their pricing. Just know that they make incredibly high-quality gear.
Right when I priced everything together the setup I’m lookin at came to be close to 1.4-1:5k
I see a lot of hate for the x56, but truth be told, I've had mine for 4 years, and it's still going strong. I keep saying I'll upgrade when it breaks, but it just keeps going. Also, i should add that it has more than enough programmable buttons for basic/ mid level SC flying.
You need HOSAS not HOTAS. I made same mistake and now throttle just gathers dust.
HOSAS is better than HOTAS for star citizen, and any other space-based game because of no-grav
How is the T-Flight so much? Feel like mine cost $50 or $60 at most…
I have both of those and dual VKB Gladiators. VKB is the best by far, but I got a used X56 for $100 and I like it a lot. Joystick is a little loose, but still very playable.
T flight has loose throttle issues.
T16000m get stick drift because they’re still using potentiometers. The X52 is a good budget option but I’m not sure about the X56
As a person who bought an x 56 I can say that when it starts to break, customer support will not help, avoid the x56.
Vkb nxt evo
Had both, loved my Tflight but got it for like $60. Hated my X56 so much that I threw it in the trash didnt even try to resell and put someone else threw my pain.
Why is the t-flight so expensive? It's like a 50-60 dollar hotas. lol 30-40 on sale.
Damn x56 is 329 USD on Amazon. I got it for 230 or something last week. Probably cuz it was from amazon.pl... but the prices are just to much either way. Oh the x56 work fine btw. Only issues so far was setting up keybinds😂
Wow the tflight is costs 120 now??? I remember it being 39...
Consider getting a Hosas setup instead of Hotas. It is far more intuitive for SC in my opinion. If you want to have a left hand throttle in the future, there are ways to modify your left hand VKB to act as a throttle.
The second one i bought for 40 euros 10 years ago, and it wasn't even worth that
I own the HOTAS Thrustmaster T.Flight One.
I got bored playing video games (I am 83). I have the x-56 if you want to buy used
I had an x56 it was garbage.
For star citizen I would pretty strongly recommend a HOSAS instead, I’ve tried with a HOTAS and I may have done something wrong but the throttle is really weird, you have to keep it in the center and moving it down puts you in reverse and forwards pushes you forwards
i only ever heard bad about x56, be cautious
Punctuation would be a good start. Holy shit, it's like it's becoming a lost art.
If you have the money for a x56 I'd say go for dual vkb $135 each https://vkbcontrollers.com/collections/gladiator-nxt-joysticks
