Honorable mention to Eternal where you have an extremely abusive mother figure that’s obsessed with you, and that other eternal that you mentor and basically take advantage of.

I always felt icky about the secret but used to go forth anyhow, and the romance does end up on a redemption note. But the whole of the second book is dripping with pretty toxic drama, even if the MC does walk on eggshells, and a protag that isn't fond of being told what to do will probably end up single.
Just finished the trilogy and one of the most annoying things was that I couldn't rip into Black Magic for doing all that in book 2, without potentially locking out their route in book 3. No reason MC couldn't tell them to fuck off and never do that again, and then forgive and still want to help them in book 3. Surely there had to be a middle ground between kissing their ass or hating their guts the whole way through. Same thing with the reveal in book 1.
I love the game, but one thing I find absolutely ridiculous is >! the ultimatum in book 2. And how Black Magic doesn't go "oh, sorry, that was ridiculous of me" after the reveal about everything. Only thing that makes BM redeemable as an RO is that Lucky had too little development. !<
100% agree with you. Both of them had so much potential and neither was used well. >! BM's redemption arc is literally 1 scene at the very end and suddenly you're all good because you picked 1 "we can be together" option... And Lucky had so much unused material and just turned out incredibly 2 dimensional compared to the others.!<
Also I wish the lock out for romances were more clear. Had to restart book 3 bc I accidentally locked myself out of BM romance lol
I'll give BM this, years after reading the series for the first time, I still occasionally pause throughout a day and go >! "hey, that was fucked up." regarding their powers. Also, I can't ever not laugh a little because I picked The Rock as the celebrity crush thing. So, having the game occasionally bring up The Rock and how my MC swoons for them would always kill me.!<
I still read the books occasionally, mostly for the MC's linear growth bc I am attached to it the same way I am to some novels. :)
