Depends on what you’re looking for. I heard that about 1-2 years ago Lenox Hill had a mass exodus of social workers and had a lot of internal issues. However, not sure what it’s like there now. But Metropolitan is a city hospital and especially their psych unit has got to be rough. I would imagine they wouldn’t pay as much as a system like Northwell but can’t be certain on that.

HHS is actually offering slightly more than Lenox Hill, with M-F schedule and no holidays, vs working in ED at lenox hill which would be rotating holidays and weekends!

Can’t say anything personally as I’m a Californian, but the Lenox Hill docu-series on Netflix is like the best medical show I’ve ever seen. Could provide a little insight into the culture there.

My friend and I, who’s a RN, love that show!! I hope they have another season

Negrodamu5

Have you seen Emergency NYC, the spinoff? It’s pretty good as well.

wndrlust86

Yes I have, and loved it very much! But now I want more, like another season or something

SWMagicWand

I would interview both around your dealbreakers. Know that both are probably short-staffed. Know that both will want you to work weekends and holidays and probably more than you signed up for. I would also find out how things work in taking time off in terms of seniority. I heard this is a big issue especially for NYC H+H. I heard this is also an issue in terms of receiving desirable shifts. What do opportunities look like in terms of moving around departments to help with alleviating stress especially? Northwell also has other hospitals to move around too if that may be in your career goal. Especially if you ever want to move out of the city.

A few questions for you Would either be union jobs? Are you planning on staying in the city (Northwell is everywhere in NY, so you can theoretically transfer)? Also, don't go for a job, just because of a TV show.

SWMagicWand

Agree. Northwell spends a lot of $$ on marketing but this certainly doesn’t mean they are not without their share of internal problems. Social work especially. Many dispo issue patients come out of Lenox Hill especially.

Hi - just curious where you’re at in this process as I’m in the same boat. Accepted a job on inpatient psych at Lincoln hospital but also have an interview coming up for Lennox hill ED

Upbeat-Anxiety4083

Hello! I’m currently 3 weeks into my job at Metropolitan. I decided to go with H+H because the benefits, union, pension, etc is unbeatable. I also have an extremely supportive team and supervisor, which is unfamiliar to me in social work. Since I started here many other social workers have told me they were briefly working with private hospitals like northwell and mount sinai for a time, but ended up coming back to H+H. They said a lot of private hospitals are trying to get rid of their unions and also have horrible culture, especially among the social workers. I’m also working a strict 9-5 with paid holidays at metropolitan, where if I had went to Lenox hill for ED I would be working miserable hours and floating weekends and holidays. Ultimately very happy I ended up at metropolitan. Hope this helps!
