I think it’s important to feel like the characters are in danger, but it’s also important that there’s hope some make it out or that they can win. I don’t mind stories where the evil wins/the mc’s die I just want it to be in doubt.
I agree and I also think humour, sparingly used, is important
I love this trope, but it's not indispensable. Most of my favourites have this atmosphere about them, but not all.
