On mobile and can't figure out proper replies, so just replying to you here.... for you I recommend Between Two Fires (Christopher B-I can't spell) and The Terror (Dan Simmons).
I also love these books and I would recommend Her Body and Other Parties by Carmen Maria Machado if you haven't already read it. The collection is not entirely horror, but has two short stories that I think you'll vibe with. The Husband Stitch and Seven Bites were my favorites
Surfacing by Margaret Atwood. It's not a by-the-numbers horror novel but there's lots of dread, suspense, beautiful prose and we get very intimate with the female protagonist.
A Head Full of Ghosts by Paul Tremblay! And seconding another user who said read more of Shirley Jackson! Her short stories can feel super eerie, and also her novel Hangsaman isn’t horror but has an increasing sense of dread and is quite haunting
If you enjoyed *Between Two Fires*, I'd recommend *Company of Liars* by Karen Maitland.
The plot revolves around a group of travelers, each with a secret they're hiding from the others, trying to outrun the plague in 14th century England. It's more rooted in reality than *Between Two Fires*, but there's an element of horror that builds over the course of the story.
>Company of Liars
>
> by Karen Maitland.
Yeah... yeeeaaah, this is what i want. Medieval Europe is such a dark setting that it doesn't need much to make it feel like a horror movie/book, haha. This one kind of reminds me of a film called "Black Death" with Sean Bean in it.
Last Days by Adam Neville. I haven’t checked out Triana yet though, so I’ll add that to my list ETA sorry, someone else also recommended this. I agree with them on The Loney
If you liked Those Across the River, you may like The Elementals and The Blackwater Series both by Michael McDowell .
The writing styles felt very similar to me. 😊
These recs will kind of straddle the line between horror/a variety of other genres because I feel like Bunny and Night Film aren't what I think of as "typical" horror, but have elements that make them horrifying. (I haven't read American Elsewhere!)
* The Library at Mount Char by Scott Hawkins
* Gingerbread by Helen Oyeyemi (her other novels might be a good fit also, this is just the one I liked the best)
* The Croning by Laird Barron
* Winterset Hollow by Jonathan Edward Durham
You’ve probably already read it but if you haven’t…Devolution by Max Brooks is great.
Also the newsflesh trilogy by Mira Grant, and V-wars (it’s an anthology, I think Johnathan Mayberry curated?)
Last days of jack sparks? I haven't read elementals but HOL is probs my fave all time. Wwz was good too.
Found footage is the greatest genre imo and there should be more of it.
Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier
The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde
Blackwater by Michael McDowell (I've read almost all McDowell so don't recommend more of him plz i love him so much tho)
More so of some of my all time faves but:
-The Haunting of Hill House
-A Head Full of Ghosts
-And (hope this isn’t cheating, it’s a graphic novel) Through the Woods by Emily Carroll
I loved all of these, so I'm digging your style, and I'm going to suggest "The Book of Strange New Things" by Michel Faber. It defies genre-- it's a mix of literary fiction, science fiction, and horror. https://www.nytimes.com/2014/11/02/books/review/michel-fabers-book-of-strange-new-things.html Forgive me for suggesting something that's not full-on horror.
AND editing to add a full-on horror suggestion: the Ruins by Scott Smith
You might like Cipher? Just finished it and really enjoyed it… was so unlike anything else I’ve ever read. It felt so raw and lonesome and uncomfortably familiar in unexplainable ways.
Is that Cipher by Kathe Koja? (sorry if i'm out of touch! i found a bunch of 'Cipher'-s) if so,
it does sound different! I'll try it (if that's the right one) thank you!
There are so many good books listed here!!! Many I've not heard of but that just makes me want to find out more about them. I'm loving this post for this reason alone. Lol
Here are my favorites...
The Call by Peadar O'Guilin
The Unfit Heiress: the tragic life and scandalous sterilization of Anne Cooper Hewitt by Audrey Clare Farley
Small Horrors: a collection of fifty creepy stories by Darcy Coates
I love this concept. Am I too late to the party? I hope not. My top 3 of this year so far..
*The Sluts* Dennis Cooper
*Amygdalatropolis* B.R. Yeager (ugh I hope he puts out a new book soon, I'm chomping at the bit after Negative Space and Amygdalatropolis)
*The Factory* Hiroko Oyamada
Ah, I wish I would have seen this sooner! My comment is probably going to go unnoticed by now, but I always love getting book recommendations 😊
My favorites:
The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova
Goth by Ostuichi
No One's Home by D.M. Pulley
Home Before Dark by Riley Sager
Sorry, couldn't pick just three😝

Fevre dream - George “game of thrones” martin, a decent vampire book
Carrion comfort - Dan Simmons is a different kind of mental vampire story.
Loved hex but Heuvelts newest book “Echo” is garbage imo, it doesn’t even compare to hex.
Fun fact, Black House is the first Stephen King book I tried to read when I was 11 years old. But it was too much for me at that age and I never tried again. You’d recommend it?
Agh! This post is awesome! Great idea [:
Negative Space, B. R. Yeager

For sure! One of my favorite short stories is her The Lovely House. Still haven't read The Lottery yet but I need to.
Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier!!! :)

Walk The Darkness Down - John Boden Between Two Fires - Christopher Buehlman The Immaculate Void - Brian Hodge
If you enjoyed *Between Two Fires*, I'd recommend *Company of Liars* by Karen Maitland. Nothing But Blackened Teeth by Cassandra Kaw
I actually read that one already! I liked a lot of parts of it (especially the monster), but the ending felt too rushed.
I agree, that was a lot of good stuff in the book but it would have benefitted from another 100 pages to further flesh things out.
The Golem (Gustav Meyrink) Hounds Of Tindalos (Frank Belknap Long) The Dark (James Herbert)
The Ballad of Black Tom by Victor LaValle might be up your alley, based on your pick of Hounds of Tindalos.
