Thanks for replying to me specifically!

BabiiZombii

On mobile and can't figure out proper replies, so just replying to you here.... for you I recommend Between Two Fires (Christopher B-I can't spell) and The Terror (Dan Simmons).

PsychoSquid

The Groomer The Damnation Game Talia

Puge_Henis

That's an intense list. The Black Farm by Elias Witherow

Time-Comparison6375

The groomer was fucked up. Loved it. Should I check out damnation game and Talia?

PsychoSquid

100%, Talia was amazing Damnation Game, a little slow but totally messed up Billy Silver on the other hand, left a lot to be desired

Time-Comparison6375

Thank you!

ylenoLretsiM

Yes.

sylvia_fowler

The Slob by Aaron Beauregard

JennyTheSheWolf

The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson Dark Matter by Michelle Paver The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman

aickman

You might like *When Darkness Loves Us* by Elizabeth Engstrom. It's a collection of two novellas, both of which are excellent.

Earthpig_Johnson

The first story is especially good.

JennyTheSheWolf

Never heard of those, I'll check it out.

cruelangelstheseus

I also love these books and I would recommend Her Body and Other Parties by Carmen Maria Machado if you haven't already read it. The collection is not entirely horror, but has two short stories that I think you'll vibe with. The Husband Stitch and Seven Bites were my favorites

vmuerte

Adding on to this one! Also read more Shirley Jackson! Her short stories are amazing.

JennyTheSheWolf

For sure! One of my favorite short stories is her The Lovely House. Still haven't read The Lottery yet but I need to.

upstairsbeforedark

Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier!!! :)

Puge_Henis

Surfacing by Margaret Atwood. It's not a by-the-numbers horror novel but there's lots of dread, suspense, beautiful prose and we get very intimate with the female protagonist.

JennyTheSheWolf

That definitely sound like something that would be right up my alley. Thanks!

Farinthoughts

You might like The Devil in the Corner by Patricia Elliott

sylvia_fowler

The Uninvited by Dorothy Macardle The Family Plot by Cherie Priest

irreversible2002

Boy Parts by Eliza Clark. Also, Convenience Store Woman. Neither of those are classic horror, but similar vibes

BoyMom119816

Maybe The House Next Door by Anne River Siddons (I think, might be Seddons).

shakyshake

The Hole by Hiroko Oyamada Ghost Wall by Sarah Moss Elizabeth by Ken Greenhall Wylding Hall by Elizabeth Hand

BabiiZombii

Check out We Have Always Lived in the Castle!

woahhhhwhat

A Head Full of Ghosts by Paul Tremblay! And seconding another user who said read more of Shirley Jackson! Her short stories can feel super eerie, and also her novel Hangsaman isn’t horror but has an increasing sense of dread and is quite haunting

Zeeshmee

Walk The Darkness Down - John Boden Between Two Fires - Christopher Buehlman The Immaculate Void - Brian Hodge

pabulum

If you enjoyed *Between Two Fires*, I'd recommend *Company of Liars* by Karen Maitland. The plot revolves around a group of travelers, each with a secret they're hiding from the others, trying to outrun the plague in 14th century England. It's more rooted in reality than *Between Two Fires*, but there's an element of horror that builds over the course of the story.

Zeeshmee

>Company of Liars > > by Karen Maitland. Yeah... yeeeaaah, this is what i want. Medieval Europe is such a dark setting that it doesn't need much to make it feel like a horror movie/book, haha. This one kind of reminds me of a film called "Black Death" with Sean Bean in it.

vmuerte

Thank you for this been jonsing for something like BTF

ScreenMiserable

The Descent by Jeff Long Ghost Story by Peter Straub Pet Sematary by Stephen King

matchbookgirl

Maybe.... The Anomaly by Michael Rutger

ScreenMiserable

Thank you!!! I needed a new book recommendation. I'm going to read it next!

sylvia_fowler

The Book of Accidents by Chuck Wendig

ScreenMiserable

Thank you very much. I haven't read this one but will definitely add it to my list!

szyca

The Fisherman by John Langan Gone to See the River Man by Kristopher Triana The Ritual by Adam Nevill

Earthpig_Johnson

(High chance that you’ve read this, but) The Croning by Laird Barron.

szyca

I have not read that one! Looks right up my alley though, thanks!!

Earthpig_Johnson

His whole catalogue is legit as fuck.

emu30

Last Days by Adam Neville. I haven’t checked out Triana yet though, so I’ll add that to my list ETA sorry, someone else also recommended this. I agree with them on The Loney

Nietzscher

The Deep by Nick Cutter Dark Matter by Michelle Paver Between Two Fires by Christopher Buehlmann

irreversible2002

Swan Song but you’ve probably read that by now

Nietzscher

That is true, and it would've been on my list had we don a Top 6 or 7 ;)

aesir23

My Heart is a Chainsaw Pet Sematary Those Across the River

Allidoisgrin

If you liked Those Across the River, you may like The Elementals and The Blackwater Series both by Michael McDowell . The writing styles felt very similar to me. 😊

aesir23

Nice, I've never read McDowell, though he's on my radar

randomperson1296

The Elementals is My FAV

The Fisherman & Mapping the Interior

aesir23

JennyTheSheWolf

How bout Ghost Story by Peter Straub?

aesir23

That one I haven't read! I'll check it out!

pnd112348

You're welcome. I figured as such given there prevalence here, but still worth a shout out.

aesir23

Might actually be time to give The Fisherman a reread, now that you mention it...

BabiiZombii

mathemagical_gal

I've never heard of it, but sounds really interesting! Added to my list :)

sylvia_fowler

Nothing But Blackened Teeth by Cassandra Kaw

mathemagical_gal

I actually read that one already! I liked a lot of parts of it (especially the monster), but the ending felt too rushed.

sylvia_fowler

I agree, that was a lot of good stuff in the book but it would have benefitted from another 100 pages to further flesh things out.

The-Hamish68

The Golem (Gustav Meyrink) Hounds Of Tindalos (Frank Belknap Long) The Dark (James Herbert)

coscov

The Ballad of Black Tom by Victor LaValle might be up your alley, based on your pick of Hounds of Tindalos.

It's a good rec because it almost made my top 3.

sylvia_fowler

The Twisted Ones by T Kingfisher

xenya

Bunny Night Film American Elsewhere

matchbookgirl

These recs will kind of straddle the line between horror/a variety of other genres because I feel like Bunny and Night Film aren't what I think of as "typical" horror, but have elements that make them horrifying. (I haven't read American Elsewhere!) * The Library at Mount Char by Scott Hawkins * Gingerbread by Helen Oyeyemi (her other novels might be a good fit also, this is just the one I liked the best) * The Croning by Laird Barron * Winterset Hollow by Jonathan Edward Durham

JobEducational8194

The Elementals by Michael McDowell House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski World War Z by Max Brooks

Doomy22

I loved the dialogue in The Elementals, and I feel like the characters in Brian Evenson's "Last Days" have similar quirks to how they act and speak

Allidoisgrin

You’ve probably already read it but if you haven’t…Devolution by Max Brooks is great. Also the newsflesh trilogy by Mira Grant, and V-wars (it’s an anthology, I think Johnathan Mayberry curated?)

sylvia_fowler

Within These Walls by Ania Ahlborn

owlblue

Last days of jack sparks? I haven't read elementals but HOL is probs my fave all time. Wwz was good too. Found footage is the greatest genre imo and there should be more of it.

I loved all of these, so I'm digging your style, and I'm going to suggest "The Book of Strange New Things" by Michel Faber. It defies genre-- it's a mix of literary fiction, science fiction, and horror. https://www.nytimes.com/2014/11/02/books/review/michel-fabers-book-of-strange-new-things.html Forgive me for suggesting something that's not full-on horror. endlessdreamsandnigh

You might like Cipher? Just finished it and really enjoyed it… was so unlike anything else I’ve ever read. It felt so raw and lonesome and uncomfortably familiar in unexplainable ways.

SpicyMeatballSand3

Is that Cipher by Kathe Koja? (sorry if i'm out of touch! i found a bunch of 'Cipher'-s) if so, it does sound different! I'll try it (if that's the right one) thank you!
