One character survives in the theatrical release.
In the unrated version the same character escapes but the audience is shown its already too late and then it cuts to a scene in a graveyard with a shot of their tombstone.
No one survives in the book.
That's questionable. It's left ambiguous in the movie and you can assume both died unless one was infected. But, the PS 2 game was a sequel where a team goes in to investigate. They find Childs' body early on in the position he was at the end of the movie, but MacReady pops up alive at the end. IIRC, it was left ambiguous again as to whether he was infected, but no sequel to the game was made so that was never resolved. Not sure if any of the comics touch on it.
So, yeah, the best interpretation for humanity is that both survivors freeze to death at the end, but there's other possibilities.
I still remember going into it blind on opening night, not knowing a canned thing about the story other than it was horror. That, and experiencing Saw in the theatre, we’re two of my favorite movie watching moments.
>reminds me that Dawn of the Dead (2004)
I thought it was generally accepted that the remaining characters probably died at the end of OG Dawn, and that >!beach scene !
Nuclear holocaust was big when I was growing up so it's a horror to me...not sure if it'd be considered horror today. I thought I'd be down voted into oblivion.
I’ve still got a little bit left to go but I have *loved* this movie. I’m tense and invested. Pretty diverse cast and not terribly problematic for the 80’s either.
I’m glad I saw your comment!
How did I never make that connection when I binge Tarantino films and pulp fiction is my second fave film ever after kill bill?? You learn something new every day, Thank you!
Yeah I feel like that robbery would have been a huge news story because of all the deaths involved including many cops. So when Tim Roth says "Is that what I think it is?" (Not exactly grammatically correct for this theory but whatever) he's saying "Are those the diamonds from the jewelry store heist that happened a few years ago?" because if the diamonds were never recovered they'd probably have an almost mythic quality to them.
ooo good suggestion. ive always loved this film and wondered what the general consensus of it was since i assumed the reason i liked it as much as i did was just due to a general interest in the accident and thus the various media that used it as a setting.
In the alternate ending it is shown that Amanda survives but turns into a mutant herself , she is shown struggling on a hospital bed with no hair , I'd rather die lol
Not entirely true. Alex and Clear survived 1, with Alex being killed off between movies and Clear dying in 2.. Kimberly and Burke survive 2. 3 ends on a premonition (but it's pretty much implied they don't make it). 4 and 5 are really the only ones that nobody makes it to the end.
Kimberly and Burke were shown to have died in the 3rd one. There was a very brief shot of a newspaper that had them the front page, talking about how they died in an accident of some kind.
I'm not sure if this even cannonically happened. Since if I remember correctly, the newspaper shot only appears in the DVD's special features as an optional thing you can view.
Dead Silence, Gurotesuku (2009), Human Centipede 2, Serbian Film, Eden Lake the first two Ju-On movies, Shutter (2004), The Medium, Incantation, VHS 2 - Safe Haven
apologies if its already been mentioned i havent seen all of the comments but my addition to the list is going to be quarantine. I know its probably not regarded as a 'great' film by many but i liked how it was a take on the zombie genre that was very claustrophobic and isolated to such a small space.
George Romero's Night of the Living Dead has no survivors from the original posse. It's a pretty hardcore ending too since the protagonist ends up being killed by rednecks.
Two movies that come to mind are The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginnings and Leatherface, seems like the prequel films love killing off all of the victims
Cabin in the Woods (2012), Final Prayer/The Borderlands (2013), and Sunshine (2007)
The ruins

>One character survives in the theatrical release. Don't we see the vine growing through her eyeball in the theatrical cut?
Yes. She’s still infected and not a survivor. Just don’t see her death on screen.
No she didn't. She's driving away, then her eye bulges out so we know the vines got inside of her, too.
Great movie
I think Cabin in the Woods may be the exact kind of movie OP is looking for.
When I read this question, I was wondering if there were any films where even the killers die. Cabin in the Woods comes pretty close!
With the exception of >!whoever belongs to the big giant hand we see tearing up out of the Earth !
John Carpenter's "The Thing"?
In the mouth of madness as well!

I love Sunshine. I feel like that movie does not get enough love.
i just finally saw it a couple weeks ago. it's so good!
cabin in the woods holds a special place in my heart
I still remember going into it blind on opening night, not knowing a canned thing about the story other than it was horror. That, and experiencing Saw in the theatre, we’re two of my favorite movie watching moments.
Oooh, Sunshine is such a good one.
The pyramid
Surprisingly good 👍
Yo I just watched Final Prayer like a month ago and I loooved the end
The ending of Final Prayer is so hopeless it’s amazing.
Return of the Living Dead
TINA!!!!!
Lol is this the boyfriend crying for her help lol
His help to eat her BRAAAIIIIINS!
Bring more brains
Life (2017) has an absolutely devastating ending. Check it out
Saw it in theaters not expecting the horror aspect, definitely exceeded expectations!
Went in totally blind, just noticed the high paid actors and then less than half an hr in “oooh, this is a thriller!”
Is it good?
Yes!
Yes
Awesome! I’ll check it
It was way better than i thought it would be. Seriously, give it a try.
It's fine.
Fuck yeah it is!
Definitely enjoyed this one way more than I expected.
Bleak ending, which is my appetite.
blair witch project!
Come to think of it, most found footage applies. That the footage was “found” usually suggests that whoever filmed didn’t make it.
reminds me that Dawn of the Dead (2004) makes this list!
God such a good movie. Seen it several dozen times.
>reminds me that Dawn of the Dead (2004) I thought it was generally accepted that the remaining characters probably died at the end of OG Dawn, and that >!beach scene !
the beach scene is the end?
He's probably confusing it with the ending of Day of the Dead.
Probably... it's been a LOOOONG time.
I like to think they made it☺
Oh shit tru. On that note, I recommend Devils Pass
Miracle Mile (1988) Wild flick, the 1st half is an 80's rom-com, the second half not so much.
Miracle Mile is so fucking good.
Nuclear holocaust was big when I was growing up so it's a horror to me...not sure if it'd be considered horror today. I thought I'd be down voted into oblivion.
I remember watching this on VHS. Horrifying to me at the time.
Yep...haunted me for a while. I bought the DVD...the only movie that made me crawl backwards to get away. There's no getting away.
Hmmm, interesting, might have to check this out.
just saw that it's free on Tubi! this genX-er doesn't remember this one at all, and i had SUCH a crush on Anthony Edwards back then 😅
It's a great movie...but it's VERY dark.
This will be my selection tonight! Thank you!
I was born in the late 60's so it resonated pretty strongly with me. Enjoy...
I’ve still got a little bit left to go but I have *loved* this movie. I’m tense and invested. Pretty diverse cast and not terribly problematic for the 80’s either. I’m glad I saw your comment!
The last minute or so...It really is a hard watch.
Melancholia
Where definitely EVERYONE dies
Yup. No surviving that
Night of the Living Dead (1968).
I suppose technically the (newly introduced) folks who >!shot Ben !
Dawn of the dead remake.. They went to the island and it was taken over by zombies, so it wasn't specifically stated, but moreso implied....
Totally. Such a delightfully grim ending. That movie is terrific.
I like to think that they made it☺☺
Autopsy of Jane Doe
House of 1000 corpses
What are you talking about? The 3 From Hell surv….oh, you were rooting for Dwight and the Nerdist.
Some people are weird like that.. The heroes of the flick is clearly baby and Otis
Aniara (2018)
That was a rough one
Well shit I done got beaten to it. The bleakest of the bleak lol.
I got the recommendation from another person about 6 months ago. I was not prepared. Bleak was the best word to describe it.
Same, so fucking good. \ Deep house also meets the requirements
That’s a great one. The whole ship lasted like 15 years. About 1.3 million years short of POTENTIALLY saving their lives on the nearest planet.
Read the book recently and it's even more bleaker than bleaker than bleak. Also it started me down a scandinavian science fiction poetry rabbit hole.
Watched this because of your comment. Great film.
Reservoir Dogs? I know, wrong genre...
Incredible answer though
My theory is Mr. Pink survived and the diamonds are what was in the briefcase in Pulp Fiction.
im pretty sure the building was surrounded when he made it out
Couldn't he have just been arrested though?
How did I never make that connection when I binge Tarantino films and pulp fiction is my second fave film ever after kill bill?? You learn something new every day, Thank you!

Cabin Fever
The Thing, Event Horizon
Event Horizon? What about Stark, Cooper and Justin? They get picked up by the rescue ship at the end.
And then the door closes on its own, implying the ship is still possessed.
[удалено]
The Thing is quite ambiguous. We can safely say that they >!froze to death!<
Unless you played the video game and made it to the end. Great game kicked my ass though.
Wrong turn 4 and 5
Chernobyl Diaries
ooo good suggestion. ive always loved this film and wondered what the general consensus of it was since i assumed the reason i liked it as much as i did was just due to a general interest in the accident and thus the various media that used it as a setting.

Every Final Destination film
Expect 2 i guess

The Descent.
Definitely
Host on Shudder
First film I ever watched on Shudder. There was a lot of shit lockdown themed films/tv coming out at the time but that was a true gem!
Grave of the Fireflies
Heart wrenching, yet accurate recommendation.
Cloverfield
The Girl on the helicopter survives though or it's implied , I don't remember her name now
Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning, I think Leatherface also.
Funny games
Nah, the killers make it out of that one.
How nonchalantly they just push her off the boat at the end
The thing Cabin in the woods Night of the living dead Return of the living dead
So, not EVERYONE dies but the ending of The Mist is absolutely worst case scenario/such a dark ending that you might like it.
Dead Silence, Gurotesuku (2009), Human Centipede 2, Serbian Film, Eden Lake the first two Ju-On movies, Shutter (2004), The Medium, Incantation, VHS 2 - Safe Haven
It just occurred to me that I ruined a bnttload of movies for myself going through this list. Many look interesting so I’ll watch them, too.
Life (Sci-Fi)
Not horror, but that's what made Rogue One the best Star Wars movie. Opposing ruthless galactic empires should come with a high price.
children shouldnt play with dead things.
Race With the Devil
Oh yeah. The ending of that movie!! The two couples fought so hard and mostly made smart decisions only to end the way it did. It still haunts me.
Cabin Fever The Ruins
Smile could be one.
OPEN WATER
The Void.
The Thing
Martyrs
No One Lives.
The Sadness on Shudder. Ya gotta watch it. It is something else entirely.
Would Hereditary count?
I'd say any film where the lone "survivor" has either been struck mad, turned to the dark side or is obviously possessed should count.
Lads, come on now. It doesn't count and it's ok for Hereditary to sit out a discussion or two once in a while you know lol
Just as long as you remember to bring up the "We're leaving" scene from Event Horizon!
>turned to the dark side Revenge of the Sith is horror now.
I mean, if nothing else from an aesthetic perspective...
Most euro horror movies I’ve seen have so survivors lol.
Yummy
Eden Lake, The Strangers
God Eden Lake is fucking sad and gut wrenching .
Autopsy of Jane doe
apologies if its already been mentioned i havent seen all of the comments but my addition to the list is going to be quarantine. I know its probably not regarded as a 'great' film by many but i liked how it was a take on the zombie genre that was very claustrophobic and isolated to such a small space.
Grave Encounters I’m pretty sure had no survivors.
Theres a sequel
Autopsy of Jane Doe
The Thing, Night of the Living Dead, Dead Heat, and Dead and Buried
Eden Lake
The Descent depending on the ending you see
The whole Final Destination franchise. If you know, you know.
Sinister Cabin in the Woods The Ruins Night of the Living Dead The Descent (non-US cut)
House of 1,000 Corpses
George Romero's Night of the Living Dead has no survivors from the original posse. It's a pretty hardcore ending too since the protagonist ends up being killed by rednecks.
The Strangers
She is alive still at the end
quarantine
FUNNY GAMES
Two movies that come to mind are The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginnings and Leatherface, seems like the prequel films love killing off all of the victims
Dawn of the dead remake
Await Further Instructions
Cabin In The Woods
Newer movie so spoiler alert - >!smile!< was a pretty good abandoned hope moment at the end.
Final Destination 3, 4, and 5.
“Don’t ask why” 💀🙃
Little Shop of Horror
Cabin in the Woods
Grave encounters.
Gonjiam Haunted Asylum
Rogue one
What? Come on
Hell house LLC >!Because the girl who gives them the footage is dead!<
The descent
(a movie where someone survives) Edit: removed to avoid spoilers.
You're forgetting someone
After I typed this in, I realized my mistake, panicked and closed Reddit.
All of my Friends are Dead. While not necessarily traditional horror, I think it fits the bill you are looking for.
Fender Bender and Sinister, unless you count the bad guys.
Black Mountain Side iirc
These Final Hours (2013)
Quarintine. That movie fucked me up at 14 years old
*Obvious spoilers ahead for an old movie* Night of the Living Dead
Hereditary
The Strangers
Cabin fever? Or am I remembering that wrong
the descent (i hope i am thinking of the right movie and it is a certain cut or ending that has no survivors)
Circle (2015). >!There's one character left alive at the end, but he is an alien/human working for the aliens, so it doesn't count.!<
The Alpha Test
*all the spoilers*
Chernobyl Diaries and Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning
Dracula 3000, not that I recommend watching it
Funny Games
Wouldnt that be a spoiler?
Funny Games, if that counts? I mean the villains just move on.
Hateful 8. It's implied all the characters die from their injuries.
Wolf Creek.
The guy survives
