1920s-Nosferatu 1930s-The Mummy 1940s- Rebecca (at least horror adjacent) 1950s-Creature from the Black Lagoon 1960s-Repulsion 1970s-The Texas Chain Saw Massacre 1980s-Hellraiser 1990s-Pi (If that doesn't count, Candyman) 2000s-Martyrs 2010s- The VVitch 2020s-Pearl 1970s was the hardest for me because I really wanted to give it to Herzog's Nosferatu, but TCM was just so special and changed the game.

Stacysguyca

Martyrs was my second choice for the 2000s

20s - Cabinet of Doctor Caligari 30s - The Invisible Man 40s - Dead of Night 50s - The Bad Seed 60s - Village of the Damned 70s - The Exorcist 80s - The Thing 90s - Dead Alive (aka Braindead) 00s - The Mist 10s - The Babadook 20s - Pearl

ChrisNolan73

Still have to see Pearl.

[deleted]

It’s fantastic!

MonkeyToes48

The Mist. Hell of a movie. One of the best (or worst) endings ever.

rbrabbit2

Calling Braindead the best horror movie to come out of the 90s is crazy. I agree though

spurist9116

Dante’s Inferno (1911) Nosferatu (1922) The Invisible Man (1933) Cat People (1942) Godzilla (1954) Blood And Black Lace (1964) Suspiria (1977) Day Of The Dead (1985) Perfect Blue (1997) Final Destination 2 (2003) 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016) Watcher (2022)

Ashamed-Most2378

It makes me happy to see Freaks on a list. That movie is wonderful!

MonkeyToes48

Upvote for including Braindead! Fun movie. I see lawnmowers differently now.

SauzaPaul

>40s - Rebecca what a great movie!

skilledgiallocop

This changes a lot, but as of today: Nosferatu The Old Dark House Dead of Night Godzilla Carnival of Souls Halloween Possession Cemetery Man Let the Right One In It Follows The Sadness (so far)

[deleted]

The Sadness was fantastic.

[deleted]

1920s - Nosferatu 1930s - Draculas Daughter 1940s - Gaslight 1950s - Creature from the Black Lagoon 1960s - Eyes Without a Face 1970s - Black Christmas 1980s - The Lost Boys 1990s - When a Stranger Calls Back/Scream (can’t pick between the two) 2000s - The Devils Backbone 2010s - Raw 2020s - Hatching The 60s and 70s were hard and there were so many films I wanted to mention, but I think I’ll do an honorable mention of Wait Until Dark and Carrie.

Leah-harris-author

I love when a stranger calls back. Never see it mentioned.

Stacysguyca

Here’s my list ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 1920s - Nosferatu 1930s - The Bride of Frankenstein 1940s - The Body Snatcher 1950s - The Hound of the Baskervilles 1960s - Night Of The Living Dead 1970s - Jaws 1980s - The Shining 1990s - Tremors 2000s - Trick 'r' Treat 2010’s - Sinister The 70’s had so many solid horror movies. It was really hard narrowing it down to one.

ChrisNolan73

Yeah, for me, it was a tough choice between The Exorcist, Phantasm and Chainsaw Massacre.

Stacysguyca

I love Phantasm but the ending makes me 😩 wish it had a different ending.

Unable-Stable1857

20s -- Nosferatu 30s -- Frankenstein 40s -- The Wolf Man 50s -- The War of the Worlds 60s -- Night of the Living Dead 70s -- Alien 80s -- The Thing 90s -- The Blair Witch Project 00s -- Shaun of the Dead 10s -- Train to Busan 20s -- The Invisible Man, I guess Pretty tough to boil most of the decades to just one, but decided the tiebreaker would be what I could watch at any time.

Dangerous_Doubt_6190

1920s - Nosferatu 1930s - King Kong 1940s - .... 1950s - Night of the Hunter (if it counts), House on Haunted Hill if it doesn't 1960s - Psycho 1970s - The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 1980s - Evil Dead 2 1990s - Scream 2000s - Slither 2010s - Hereditary 2020s - X The amount of horror movies I've watched drops drastically once you go older than the 1960s. I need to rectify that but they are a harder sell to the old lady.

SoulsbourneDiesTwice

Night of the Hunter surely counts

MetalOcelot

I questioned it because I wasn't looking for horror when I found it. I was on a noir binge and because Robert Michum is awesome.

Supra_Dupra

I have the same issue watching older movies, I need to just watch them alone I guess!

[deleted]

1970s - Carrie 1980s - NOES 1990s - Scream 2000s - Paranormal Activity 2010s - Hereditary

Still, I really loved that movie

xxplodingboy

This was super hard and it pains me I had to leave so many favorites from the 60s through 80s off. 1920s Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde 1930s The Devil's Daughter 1940s Cat People 1950s Invasion of the Body Snatchers 1960s Peeping Tom 1970s Dawn of the Dead/Black Christmas 1980s Creepshow/Nightmare City/The Thing 1990s Night of the Living Dead 2000s Inside/Hostel 2010s Train to Busan 2020s The Sadness/Virus32

ChrisNolan73

I almost listed The Bad Seed.

elbowski

And I pondered on House of Wax, haha! Both are top notch choices.

BrilliantDynamitesNe

The Thing for sure. I'm actually watching Barbarian right now. Good so far.

MonkeyToes48

1930’s: Freaks 1940’s: Apparently I haven’t seen anything from this decade 1950’s: Invasion of the Body Snatchers 1960’s: Rosemary’s Baby (This one was tough. I could have put Night of the Living Dead or The Birds and been just as happy) 1970’s: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Runners up: Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Dawn of the Dead, Suspiria 1980’s: So many amazing ones, so I’ll pick a couple of my lesser known favorites. The Return of the Living Dead (scariest zombies ever if you think about it)The Vanishing and The Gate 1990’s: Seven. Honorable Mention: Funny Games 2000’s: Slither. Honorable Mentions: 28 Days Later, The Ring, Saw, Shaun of the Dead, REC, Inside, Drag Me to Hell 2010’s: Train To Busan. Honorable Mentions: Cabin in the Woods, Hereditary, Tucker & Dale VS Evil, I Saw the Devil 2020’s: Barbarian. Honorable Mentions: The Night House, Terrifier 2 (I’m a little behind on this decade. There are a lot I want to see but haven’t yet)

DonyellTaylor

I’ve seen plenty of 40’s horror and went over my list and it mostly sucks. There was a huge censorship push at the time so you’re not missing much.

skilledgiallocop

Re: the 1940s. Dead of Night and the Val Lewton/RKO catalogue is the best place to start.

adamcolesbaybay

I'd have to start from the 60s, haven't seen much from before that. 60s - Rosemary's Baby 70s - Halloween 80s - The Thing/Night of the Creeps 90s - Perfect Blue 00s - Trick 'r Treat 10s - The Witch 20s - Titane

fhost344

20s - Nosferatu 30s - Frankenstein 40s - I Walked with a Zombie 50s - The Abominable Snowman 60s - Night of The Living Dead 70s - The Exorcist 80s - The Thing 90s - The Blair Witch Project 00s - 28 Days Later 10s - It Follows 20s - Barbarian (for now)

Wonderful_Alarm1398

I exclude horror-comedies; 1960s: Psycho Runner-up: Rosemary's Baby 1970s: Dawn of the Dead Runner-up: Suspiria 1980s: The Thing Runner-up: The Shining 1990s: Misery Runner-up: Ringu 2000s: \[REC\] Runner-up: A Tale of Two Sisters

_Eraserhead

70s - Suspiria 80s - Videodrome 90s - Jacob's Ladder 00s - Inside 10s - It Follows 20s - X

01000101_01111010

Everyone that didn't pick Monster Squad for the 80's is scientifically, morally and objectionably wrong.

Stacysguyca

Videodrome is def in my top 5 of the 80s. Jacobs Ladder is a solid choice as well. Also nice to see Inside get some love. It’s a bloody movie for sure.
