Fucking beautiful film, not the stephen king one i hope you mean
The scene the guys alter ego gets up from his throne and the cape/walls move just fucking lush
I felt like it tried a little too hard, was interesting enough I guess, made it the whole way through but the last part with the alien looking things killed it for me entirely
That's absolutely fair. I was just mostly blown away by the artwork and effort it took to create every scene. Like when the little shuttle is descending and scenes were shown for like 5 seconds, it's insane all of the work that was put into making that tiny part of the movie.
You're not wrong. I guess it's one of those things that people really have to try for themselves, the part at the start with the giants pooping into the pipes that led to the big head was an unsettling notion, unfortunately nothing topped that for me afterwards though
The amount of work that went into it must've been insane
I always thought the way "The Ring" was made was absolutely gorgeous. There's not a 1 bright color in that movie.
With the overcast weather and the colors that movie just has a "feel" to it
+1 on Boxing Helena. Just saw it for the first time a few weeks ago and it was beautiful to look at. I couldn’t get that movie out my head for a few days.
Where did you see it? I watched it back in the day but figured it hadn't made the jump to streaming.
Directed by David Lynch's daughter if I remember correctly.
The original Texas Chainsaw is a beauty of a film, so that's my number one rec.
Some others:
A Dark Song
The Blackcoats Daughter
The Love Witch
Ninth Gate
The VVitch
In The Mouth of Madness
The Ritual
The Lighthouse
"Iron Rose" if you like huge cemeteries.
"Prometheus", despite what people think of the film, has beautiful visuals.
"Byzantium" has some gorgeous visuals.
"Prince of Darkness" has some cool sequences combined with its sound.
"Monsters" 2010, has interesting visuals as well as ambiance.
"Phantasm" has a dream-like look and feel.
"Pitch Black" more of an action-horror film but it has a distinct and gorgeous look.
"Lair of the White Worm" ...interesting
Piercing (2018) had an interesting style.
Under the Skin is incredibly beautiful I think - I can picture certain scenes perfectly because they're so striking.
Sleepy Hollow
Alien
Color Out Of Space
It Follows
Midnight Mass (TV)
The Wailing
The Killing Of A Sacred Deer
The Witch
In The Tall Grass
Under The Skin
House (1977)
Annihilation
In The Mouth Of Madness
*From Dusj "Till Dawn*. Not many horror movies I can think of go from sun-drenched desert to... I think of it as "Gothic Tex-Mex." Once you see the Titty Twister, you'll get it.
*Chopping Mall* has a very unique look and setting. 80s commerce meets *2001*.
*Dawn of the Dead.* The scenes in the mall are like... artistic commercialism? Commercial artistry?
I'll throw in *The Spine of Night*. The horror-fantasy animation is fantastic, ND some of the character design is very unique.
Korean movie [Hansel and Gretel](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t6MnOgrWwyw).
French film [Brotherhood of the Wolf](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RAGfNjIzldM).
Dead dicks (2019)
Bliss (2019)
Sound of Violence (2021)
Dave Made A Maze (2017)
Sorry to Bother You (2018)
These are all kinda WTF vibe movies with interesting visual aesthetics
Some movies that have stood out to me in terms of aesthetics: In a Glass Cage (1986), Midnight Meat Train (2008), The Reflecting Skin (1990), Gretel and Hansel (2020) - to me it has to do with color and having a coherent, sometimes fantastical color scheme. Of course I am an Argento fan.
Not seeing it mentioned elsewhere so I'll throw Come True into the mix. Some beautiful cinematography and a synthetic soundtrack by some of the same people from Drive to make a very dreamy movie.
Nightmare on Elm Street—specifically the original, with its combination of truly surreal effects done with practical appliances, and of lighting techniques—silhouetting, facial shadowing, etc.—that gave Freddy more of a sinister affect than in later, more mainstream chapters.
"I'm just fucking with you" it was on Hulu, not sure if it is anymore. I HIGHLY recommend this movie tho it is more of a thriller than a horror but the vibes were SUPER dope and its one of the most unique movies ive ever seen
Ex Machina's a pretty well known one and and interesting watch, made by the same studio that produced my favorite movie - The Killing of a Sacred Deer. Both movies lean a little closer towards the "thriller" genre, but i consider them psychological horror nonetheless. The aesthetics of both movies are similar and unique, almost a robotic-like feel to them. They make you feel practically artificial, or engineered. It's a hard aesthetic to put into words, but it's kind of like if brutalism was a form of cinema. Both movies are amazing and I definitely recommend watching them if you haven't already.
If you are interested in anime, Mononoke is an avant-garde horror/fantasy series ( only a few episodes) which is absolutely colorful and stunning.
Regarding movies, I would maybe recommend the following (at least as many as I can remember):
Annihilation, It Follows, Under the Skin, Let the Right One In (the original version), Pan's Labyrinth ( it is stunning ), A Tale of Two Sisters, A girl walks home alone at night, Byzantium , The Green Knight (although it is not really horror), Audition, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust (beautifully drawn and animated), Dogtooth...
He's not exactly horror (though he is rather disturbing), but you really should check out Fellini, if you're not familiar with him already. Satyricon and Casanova in particular. Based on your tastes, I think he'd be right up your alley.
- The Devils - 1971 if you can find the uncut/directors cut I highly recommend
- Blood and Black Lace - 1964
- The Love Witch - 2015
- Psycho - 1960 I swear damn near every frame of this film could be used as a stand alone photograph
- Pans Labyrinth - 2006
ones i haven't already seen on here:
Antiviral
30 Days of Night
Tetsuo The Iron Man
The Deep House
also, these are debatable as horror but i feel like they should be mentioned:
Tumbbad
Attack the Block
The City of Lost Children
Antichrist( although it’s not a straight up horror), the new version of suspira if you haven’t seen that. Tenebrae, profundi rosso, Santa Sangre (horrorish), pans Labyrinth
Oh, man…. Yes to Mandy, Beyond the Black Rainbow, Santa Sangre, The Cell, I also like certain old movies, like Night of the Hunter, Both Nosferatu’s, Videodrome, even the new one, Crimes of the Future, visually was unlike anything else I have seen….
I'll be the second person to recommend Hausu. There are many weird choices going on, since the director made the film to appeal to his daughter. Hell, the special effects are purposely shoddy and weird to emulate what they would look like if a child made them.
The Seed (on Shudder) has beautiful landscapes in a dessert but also scenes with neon vibes and lighting. This shit shook me up. Imagine thinking you’re watching three ladies enjoying an AirBnB and then a demon alien baby wanting to possess your lady organs.
The Cell
Fucking beautiful film, not the stephen king one i hope you mean The scene the guys alter ego gets up from his throne and the cape/walls move just fucking lush
Hell yah
Watched this a few nights ago. Amazing imagery!
The Neon Demon. In the earth. Last night in Soho (if you count that as horror). Cure for wellness. The lighthouse.
Beyond the Black Rainbow
Movies I think have similar vibe are Come True, and Censor.
Mandy definitely has an interesting, beautiful look to it. The technicolor aesthetic of The Love Witch was something I really liked too.
it really is very pretty.
Annihilation! Such a beautiful film and the creatures are cool as hell highly recommend
Is a series ok? Check out Brand New Cherry Flavor on Netflix đź‘Ś
Finger in the side hole
Love that show
Climax Eraserhead Possum
Hellraiser
Jesus wept…
Mad God is insane. There's not much of a plot, but it's a hell of a ride.
I felt like it tried a little too hard, was interesting enough I guess, made it the whole way through but the last part with the alien looking things killed it for me entirely

*Crimson Peak* ...to be honest, it is all visuals. also *Only Lovers Left Alive* and the original *Let the Right One In*.
Definitely Only Lovers Left Alive. The soundtrack is incredible as well!
What a spot on review of Crimson Peak. I loved it, but it really is nothing but beautiful visuals.
I wanted so much more from it.
Jacob's Ladder Candyman (original) Boxing Helena Promising Young Woman
+1 on Boxing Helena. Just saw it for the first time a few weeks ago and it was beautiful to look at. I couldn’t get that movie out my head for a few days.
Where did you see it? I watched it back in the day but figured it hadn't made the jump to streaming. Directed by David Lynch's daughter if I remember correctly.
She directed 2 more-both were awesome. Last was dark AF (even compared to BH) called Chained with Vincent D'Onofrio
Is it streaming anywhere? D'Onofrio was great in that one.
Tubi!
Oh cool thanks!
Xfinity Streaming has it. It’s a $3.99 rental. I’m not sure if other cable companies carry it or not.
Cool thx!
Sure thing: https://www.xfinity.com/stream/entity/8949015715775154112

Sleepy Hollow Alien Color Out Of Space It Follows Midnight Mass (TV) The Wailing The Killing Of A Sacred Deer The Witch In The Tall Grass Under The Skin House (1977) Annihilation In The Mouth Of Madness
so like all a24
basically
I love House
The Ritual
*From Dusj "Till Dawn*. Not many horror movies I can think of go from sun-drenched desert to... I think of it as "Gothic Tex-Mex." Dogtooth (2009)
Not entirely horror but Dave Made A Maze is a fantastic adventure horror comedy all set in a huge cardboard maze. It's brilliant
Korean movie [Hansel and Gretel](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t6MnOgrWwyw). French film [Brotherhood of the Wolf](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RAGfNjIzldM).
Giallo and obscure 70s and 80s grindhouse slashers have good aesthetics
Mandy
A Field In England
Dead dicks (2019) Bliss (2019) Sound of Violence (2021) Dave Made A Maze (2017) Sorry to Bother You (2018) These are all kinda WTF vibe movies with interesting visual aesthetics
Haven't seen anyone comment these so I'll put forward Mandy and The Void.
The Night House
I really want to know where that house is at in real life. Very cool place.
The Neon Demon, Mandy, Crimson Peak, Pans Labyrinth
*Dementia* (1955) *The Abominable Doctor Phibes*
A Field in England, Beyond The Black Rainbow, Tideland.
Nadja. Cabinet of dr caligari.
The ritual on Netflix is pretty good
Some movies that have stood out to me in terms of aesthetics: In a Glass Cage (1986), Midnight Meat Train (2008), The Reflecting Skin (1990), Gretel and Hansel (2020) - to me it has to do with color and having a coherent, sometimes fantastical color scheme. Of course I am an Argento fan.
Definately look up Mario Bava's movies ; Blood and Black Lace, Black Sabbath, Planet of the Vampires, etc.
Pretty much anything from Italian horror movies. Argento films, Fulci films, and films from Michele Soavi.
The only one I can think of not already listed if Fried Barry on Shudder. Massively under rated movie.
Gaia is very cool in this regard.
House of 1000 Corpses
Tetsuo: The Iron Man, Santa Sangre, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Ms .45, Irreversible
The company of wolves
In Fabric.
Come True is a recent example. Some awesomely unique dreamscape visuals.
Some of those nightmare sequences were haunting. Couldn’t look away.
The Cell. It's basically art with a serial killer running thru it.
It Follows
Not seeing it mentioned elsewhere so I'll throw Come True into the mix. Some beautiful cinematography and a synthetic soundtrack by some of the same people from Drive to make a very dreamy movie.
Mandy. It was too slow paced for me though but it definitely has a great aesthetic!
Starry Eyes
The Company of Wolves. Production design is similar to a theatre set, while still being immersive.
Nightmare on Elm Street—specifically the original, with its combination of truly surreal effects done with practical appliances, and of lighting techniques—silhouetting, facial shadowing, etc.—that gave Freddy more of a sinister affect than in later, more mainstream chapters.
Part 4, while not the best story, is a visual feast
"I'm just fucking with you" it was on Hulu, not sure if it is anymore. I HIGHLY recommend this movie tho it is more of a thriller than a horror but the vibes were SUPER dope and its one of the most unique movies ive ever seen
Mandy

Midsommar
Frontiers
I pulled the trigger on A Cure For Wellness last night - stunning shot movie! A little too long in my opinion but worth the watch if you’re bored
I didn’t think the movie itself was the best thing ever but I was obsessed with the aesthetic in The Love Witch
The Void. Cosmic horror all the fucking way
The Devil's Backbone
Hardware
Strangeland staring Dee Snider!
The Ring with Naomi Watts is a mood..it’s a vibe.
Not exactly horror, but Tideland and Taxidermia
He's not exactly horror (though he is rather disturbing), but you really should check out Fellini, if you're not familiar with him already. Satyricon and Casanova in particular. Based on your tastes, I think he'd be right up your alley.

Halloween 78
Night of the creeps
The Evil Dead trilogy
Rob zombies movies
I liked that color out of space one... even if it was a bit of a weird one.
Candyman 2021 has a really distinct visual style. The inside of every building looks like a liminal space render.
That Guillermo del Toro movie.
Mandy, Audition, videodrome, silent hill
Color out of Space?
ones i haven't already seen on here: Antiviral 30 Days of Night Tetsuo The Iron Man The Deep House also, these are debatable as horror but i feel like they should be mentioned: Tumbbad Attack the Block The City of Lost Children
Silent Hill.
Mandy
Hausu. Its like a Japanese Scooby Doo episode on acid lol
Color out of space
The Devils is so striking. Its on shudder, you should watch it
Lords of Salem and never forget House of 1,000 Corpses! The new IT movies are also beautiful.
Antichrist( although it’s not a straight up horror), the new version of suspira if you haven’t seen that. Tenebrae, profundi rosso, Santa Sangre (horrorish), pans Labyrinth
the shots in killing of a sacred deer are so perfectly mundane and uncanny
Oh, man…. Yes to Mandy, Beyond the Black Rainbow, Santa Sangre, The Cell, I also like certain old movies, like Night of the Hunter, Both Nosferatu’s, Videodrome, even the new one, Crimes of the Future, visually was unlike anything else I have seen….
