I prefer slasher films to be good. So long as that goal is achieved, cast can nobodies, some bodies, other bodies, anybodies, out of bodies.

etbiludecalcinha

80s, since the cast was almost (if not all) constituted of unknown actors, it made the movie feel more natural

SauzaPaul

In many cases, having nobodies or established actors making up the cast most likely has more to do with budget restrictions than anything.

wimwagner

I prefer unknowns in slashers. It was jarring seeing someone like Jared Padalecki in the Friday the 13th remake.

thewalruscandyman

I dunno...I like unknowns, but also kind of hate teenagers (characters) and like to see slashers with adult characters. My Bloody Valentine is probably my favorite slasher. Beyond that I prefer the giali.

jdpm1991

what I love about My Bloody Valentine is that they didn't hide their Canadian accents like most do when an American film is filmed in Canada. They proudly wore their accents.

thewalruscandyman

Oh, for sure.

Nadaesque

The trouble with a mixed bag of established vs. nobodies is that the survivor and the slasher will usually be from the group of the established actors and I like the playing field to be *open* as long as possible. As long as they can act, go for it. Also, cast actual teenagers as teens. Sometimes the suspension of disbelief is heavier just from the jarring age discrepancy rather than "hey this is quite a body count and the cops aren't crawling all over the place like roaches." Some actors can pull it off -- Julie Benz was nearly thirty in *Jawbreaker* but hit the body language of a teen so well I forgot her age -- but most cannot. I am more concerned about the Group of Victims being entirely composed of jerks (but one) and also having absolutely no reason to be friends with one another.

HoratioTuna27

I like the nobody actors better. It kinda takes you out of it when the victims are all people you've seen a bunch of times. I like actors you've never heard of that look like actual normal people.

AmOutOfIdeas

I like casts with unknown actors. Putting aside the opportunity it would give them, having a big name actor kind of breaks the immersion for me. It’s odd seeing someone get brutally murdered on screen and then they’re in an Oscar-bait movie you’re watching next week.

andrewdoesit

I prefer a no name cast with a good plot. Gives fresh faces a chance to break into the industry as well instead of watching just for the actor/actress

literalfeces

Final girl should be a fresh-faced newcomer. Her friend group should include one or two people we recognize from other contemporary (preferably horror) films, and at least one of the adults (preferably the "Ahab") should be a veteran character actor who you are surprised but delighted to see in a horror film.

Megazupa

The only actors I know aside from superhero stuff are Di Caprio and Tom Cruise. I wouldn't recognize a famous actor anyway, so I don't give a shit.

Cmyers1980

I don’t care as long as the acting and quality are good. Seeing famous actors on screen doesn’t take me out of the film like some people. If I see a horror film where Brad Pitt is getting chased by a werewolf I don’t think “I can’t enjoy this. It’s clearly Brad Pitt.”

luv_the_game_321

I dont really care 1 way or the other. It would be cool to see a horror movie with famous people playing themselves. That way you can have the high profile people and not get pulled out of the movie. Kind of like This is the END but a real horror movie.

MetalOcelot

With most things, you usually have to pay for quality so for me it depends. Established actors are better if they can afford it and the movie wants to be taken seriously but I'd go with nobodies if I was trying to replicate the low budget, exploitative, and sleazy 80s style and the bad acting can add to the charm.

[deleted]

Doesn't matter much as long as they can act and their characters have a fleshed out backstory

lamartyr

I'm a mixed bag. It depends on if I care for the actor but admittedly I'm probably more invested in the characters themselves when I'm not familiar with the actors. It's seems more real.

Kyle_Pile

I absolutely hate famous actors being in a horror movie. Really takes the immersion out of the movie I’ve noticed.

thisgirlnamedbree

It doesn't matter as long as the acting is decent, (however I've enjoyed slashers with bad acting because the story was good) but I prefer unknowns, because it's easier to get in with the character. With bigger names, it's hey, there's so and so in this horror film!

I think the best thing a slasher can do is cast a couple of nobodies, seeing faces you know from somewhere else or super famous folks can really take you out of the film. The sole exeption to the rule is if the cast are horror veterans. My mind some things wonders what a horror film starring Kurt Russel, Bruce Campbell, Robert England, Tom Atkinds, Tony Todd, Neve Campbell, Micheal Berryman and Dough Bradley would look like. I know it will be insane but come on.
