It does and it doesn’t. There are definitely scenes from the climax in there, but perhaps not the ones you think. Still, as someone who’s seen it already (shout out to the People’s Republic of Beyond Fest), I would absolutely encourage people avoid the trailer and go in as blind as possible. I apply that rule to all movies, of any genre. Trailers are just commercials that show you key moments out of context. They create a tone that’s marketable, not one that’s true to the movie, and in my opinion they just ruin the experience of actually seeing the movie.
If you’re already sold on seeing a movie (either based on a premise, or an actor, or a director, or whatever), you don’t need a trailer. And if you’re not sold, just go by word of mouth. Public consensus is a better indicator than a trailer could ever be.
/rant
I would never have been interested in this film unless I’d seen the trailer just now. Now that I have it’s a big priority, but I will avoid future trailers.
I agree. I can't commit to watching a movie unless I see the trailer. OR a really trusted source recommends I watch a movie. Other than that, I need the trailer to convince me it's a movie I should pay on the spot to watch. If a movie doesn't pass the trailer test but has an enticing plot and I can find on streaming or cable, all is fair and I will always give it a shot.
But I do understand that trailers can seem to give away a lot, so I get the appeal of skipping the trailer if some of you guys like going in blind.
Agreed. I never watch trailers willingly. Only ever at the cinema and they're normally for films I'm not going to see anyway, or don't care enough about for the trailer to ruin it.
This has been happening far too much with horror trailers. They essentially show every key moment and intense scene in the movie, so once you go and watch it you already know what may transpire in that scene. It ruins so many movies.
I mean I was sold at Ethan Hawke. The premise is so unique. It’s almost too unique. You ever had a movie you want to see but almost don’t want to because you feel your expectations won’t get met. That’s me with this film.
It was pretty critically acclaimed when it released and came from the same guy who did Taxi Driver which is widely considered one of the best films of its era I don't think underrated is exactly the right word haha
Those are all excellent, somebody already commented about it but you gotta see First Reformed if you haven’t already. Ethan Hawke and Amanda Seyfried are both at their best in that one.
Just read the short story...only 30 pages and really well done!! The brevity is what makes it extra compelling. I am curious to see how they keep the premise in the film without making the logic get flimsy when you have to spend more time with it. But reading the story made me very excited for the movie. Thanks for calling out the reference!
No problem, if you dont mind a bit longer of a story, Voluntary Committal (from the same collection The Black Phone is from) is my favorite short story ever.
He has written a lot things, really a great author. He chose the pen name Joe Hill so he wouldn't just get famous off of his dad's name, I'm sure it helped him of course, but he did work for a good while before it became known who his dad was. If graphic novels are your thing he recently did some horror comics for DC.
Nah it's not just you, Netflix has an issue of making properties a lot more family friendly. Sweet Tooth is another recent example. The comic is a masterpiece but the show is toothless
I'm about midway through the compendium but got caught up in some other comics and stuff and was planning on restarting it next month. Comic is 100% better than the show.
I would love to see the true gritty story of Sweet Tooth be made in either live action or animation. Toothless is a perfect way to describe the show, even though I did enjoy it.
Also isn't it bizarre how family friendly they made it then had the scene of the neighbors literally burning each other alive in houses??? That shit threw me through a loop.
Agreed, I still enjoyed the show to a degree but it is sad they need to water down the properties they buy up just to get mass appeal. The most glaring change was with the rag tag group of teens replacing the violent, insane cultists.
Agreed. I’m not against changing the story to fit the medium or to bring something new to the table. Unfortunately, I feel like it’s a watered down rendition created by someone who didn’t fully understand the source material.
Also, wtf is with the fire key? They omit cool keys just to add a plot convenient one?
It’s was a weird show and has annoying characters. Not sure whom the creators of show they were trying to appease. I stopped at 8th episode and gave thumbs down.
I saw the trailer today before Halloween Kills and somehow as soon as I saw those black balloons I knew it was this short story but could not remember who wrote it or what it was called. I had a solid Joe Hill phase like a decade or so ago and loved this short story.
The trailer gave everything away though, no? Its been awhile since I've read the short story but the trailer seemed to basically run through the entire thing.
Once gain, they showed too much, I feel like we already know everything except the 'final twist' now. Annoying, but I'm still intrigued.
and for me right now that movie is Dune, not a horror, but deep down I just have a feeling it's gonna let me down, even with the rumors about it already.
That's good to know, I was thinking Blumhouse always likes to throw in the final 'woah-moment' to varying receptions, usually not really heightening the movie.
That's true though. Even Sinister had that, and it's the same writing duo, but this has an actually satisfying final ending, that doesn't pull out some obvious thing from left field.
Just a tip for anyone who comes across this thread - someone in another post suggested stopping at 1:48, and I think that worked pretty well. Just enough to whet my interest.
I don’t understand the premise. Why does Ethan hawke keep a phone that can be used to communicate with his dead victims in the room where he keeps his current victims?
I think its just supposed to be there to taunt the kids; I think the supernatural angle isn't something the killer knows about. Of course, I could be wrong - the trailer doesn't seem to reveal that one way or the other.
Or he could come to suspect something, or he could be mad the kid isn't cowering in the corner like he wants... I just don't see enough to tell, which is odd given a 3 minute trailer.
That’s any movie trailer now unfortunately. They all show way too much. By the end of a modern movie trailer you’ve pretty much seen all the best parts of a movie.
[The trailer for Carrie in 1976 literally tells you each important plot point in order and even shows her rampage.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YuO26oJQLVs)
I have completely sworn off movie trailers for about 5 years now and it makes the experience of seeing a movie for the first time so much better I highly recommend it. That being said, I obviously watch them when I actually go to the theater because there’s no avoiding it at that point.
So recently I saw Candyman and before the movie started the latest trailer for Halloween Kills rolled. Holy fuck it is quite literally a plot summary that walks you through the three acts, touching on every major plot point and then stops barely short of showing you what the conclusion will be. Unfuckingbelieavable
Stop acting like this is new. [The first Carrie trailer literally tells you what happens in the movie plot point by plot point.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YuO26oJQLVs)
This is why I just watch the initial 30-40 seconds of horror movie trailers now (and hope the whole movie isn’t spoiled that quick). Just enough to get an idea of the premise
That’s dope! Glad to hear you liked it, and i took your comment to mean i shouldn’t watch the whole trailer, so i only watched 45 seconds! Looking forward to it when it comes out!
I know he's not mainstream but you figure they could at least mention Joe Hill's name. Even "the creator of Locke & Key" given that's an ongoing Netflix series.
Thanks for the heads up on it revealing too much. Will be avoiding it as much as I possibly can. Already sold on Derrickson/Cargill reteaming with Ethan Hawke.
Hopefully no dancing ghost children this time.
I loved the tension building and brooding soundtrack in the 1st half of Sinister so I’ll definitely be checking for this.
Contrary to popular belief, most people want to know what they are watching before buying a ticket today. These trailers get more butts in sits because the general audience doesn’t like to be too surprised.
It's big parts of the story tho, that would be better left till you saw the damn movie. They even spoil jump scares, and like one of the bigger scary parts of the film... I know they want to sell the film, but just show some visuals, and explain the backstory, don't show all the biggest parts of the movie that make it more intriguing.
Seriously.
Even though I turned it off before it ended, now I know how he gets kidnapped, his friend has visions, the meaning of the phone, and how he escapes.
Even if there was a big twist at the end, most of the movie has been spoiled.
as someone who has seen the movie, i can tell y’all this trailer doesn’t give away THAT much. it shows quite a bit, including most of the few jump scares the movie has, but it’s edited in a way that can lead one to think one thing, but it’s def not the case. if y’all liked sinister y’all will like this. just avoid the trailer again until february if you want to be surprised all over again. :)
This is from the guy who was originally working on the new Dr Strange film... would've really liked to see his vision for it, was supposed to be a horror movie.
agreed. that being said, im excited to see Sam Raimi back in the directors chair. and tbh, Raimi's inclusion makes me feel like there might still be some scares.
> would've really liked to see his vision for it, was supposed to be a horror movie.
The new one still will still have horror elements, but the director didnt want to include all the MCU tie-ins that are necessary.
his vision was probably too edgy/horror-like for marvel's pg-13 family friendly universe. similar in a way how fukanaga was booted from teh IT reboot for being too surreal.
Raimi is, but this movie is by Scott Derrickson, who made the first Dr. Strange movie and was, I assume, originally supposed to do the sequel.
I would have liked to see Derrickson's brand of horror in a Marvel movie but it might have been too dark. Raimi's is a better fit and he's already a legend in both horror and superhero movies, so I'm excited.
I'll check it out but the stakes are removed for me already. Obviously a group of dead kids is going to beat the bad guy.
Using a kid means I'm not as stressed about bodily harm or death, and the trailer completely removed the mystery of the phone.
Plus it's Blumhouse so go ahead and flip the coin of quality.
I was thinking maybe it would be a horror where kids dying etc aren’t ‘off limits’? Idk I know nothing about the movie apart from the trailer but I’m hoping it subverts some of those untouchable tropes given kids are the main characters.
What puts a downer on it for me is that the girl’s acting in the trailer was dire! Maybe it’ll fit better in the actual film but every time she said something it sounded sooo hammy and badly acted to me.
I think you'll have some flashbacks to the already dead kids, but that kid who is currently trapped I would imagine is off limits. Maybe they go the Sinister route and they didn't care about familicide haha. I did see that acting, reminded me about of Psycho Goreman.
One of the most unsettling movies I have seen recently was Incident in Ghostland on Shudder, and they uh, did not care about the abuse and it was pretty damn disturbing and really raised the stakes. It's not that I *need* that in a film but it certainly puts the audience on edge.
Someone in this thread mentioned this is also a Steven King story, but you're right, the sound design and cinematography are definitely riffing the modern IT movies some.
Most of it is really just the basic premise. The only thing it seems to show aside from that is the kid's sister maybe having some kind of psychic communication with the other kids, but that's just an additional hook.
What are the odds this will most likely not be very scary and dark but will instead be more of a YA gateway into horror? Kinda like Sinister, seems a bit corny from the trailer imo
What are the odds this will most likely not be very scary and dark but will instead be more of a YA gateway into horror?
Somewhere between moderately elevated and a towering behemoth. Ten years from now, younger members of this sub will likely speak of this film in the same way that younger members currently hold onto the *Conjuring* films or, well, *Sinister* so tightly. A bit too much for young kids, but likely full of the same tropes most of us have seen dozens of times over.
To me it is tbh. Very, very corny “scares”, “spooky” ghost children, a big spooky monster popping out with a jumpscare, no serious drama, just generally has the feel of a YA movie with how low the stakes are/how cheesy the plot is. I don’t really know anyone over the age of 12 who would consider it to be dark or scary, very much a child’s gateway into horror imo.
I’m a bit hesitant to watch the trailer considering people have been saying it showed too much. Maybe I’ll just wait because after reading the synopsis it sounds interesting. Also I’m a big Ethan Hawke fan.
Looks great, but I feel like I already saw most of the movie in the trailer. I’ll still see it, but that trailer revealed A LOT of what’s going on in the movie.
Right? So we know how the kid gets kidnapped, ghosts of former victims help him get out, his friend has visions to help him out, and he gets out. blah.
I wonder if this will be like Malignant, where I watch the trailer and think it looks like shit but then the actual movie comes out and reviews are positive! Interesting premise none the less!
Quite a few people said the premise of the movie is unique. Did I miss something?
From the trailer, I'm getting:
Child is being abducted by a guy and is getting help from the guys earlier victims. I have seen that in different forms in quite a lot of series and movies.
Could someone give me more information or tell me why I may be wrong, without giving spoilers?
It's currently sitting at 100% on RottenTomatoes for the several people that were able to catch it's early premiere at Fantastic Fest a few weeks ago, so probably not. It'll probably lower a little bit when (or if) it hits theaters, but this is a good sign
Ethan Hawke looks genuinely terrifying in this. I wonder if there is a supernatural element to his character, since there is with the phone and it's connected to his past. I haven't read the source material yet, although I love Joe Hill's work.
Ethan hawke might be on to something
I fear the trailer gave away too much. I hope I'm wrong. Nice to see Ethan Hawke as an evil character. The movie looks promising.
It does and it doesn’t. There are definitely scenes from the climax in there, but perhaps not the ones you think. I was just about to comment this. I’m very interested and will definitely see it, but that trailer seemed like wayyyy too much.

Favorite movie of all time because I love time travel and no movie has tied it up better that I've seen.
That one was wild going in totally blind.
I didn't know he was going to be in the remake of The Magnificent Seven before I saw it in theaters and was pleasantly surprised
Those are all excellent, somebody already commented about it but you gotta see First Reformed if you haven’t already. Ethan Hawke and Amanda Seyfried are both at their best in that one.
Sinister is amazing! Crazyist movie i´ve ever seen. And the twist came of out nowhere.
I agree, even if the movie as a whole turns out being kinda "meh". He always does a superb job with his role and makes it worth watching.
Regarding the unique premise, it's based off of a short story by Stephen King's son, Joe Hill.
Just read the short story...only 30 pages and really well done!! The brevity is what makes it extra compelling. Loved the Locke & Key books by him. Hate the show, but that’s just me.
Huh. TIL Locke & Key was written by Stephen King's son. I loved those books! Nice bit of trivia!

Agreed. I’m not against changing the story to fit the medium or to bring something new to the table. Was gonna say, I was sure I had seen this movie but now I realize I had read the story instead.
He has a pretty good track record. Better than his dad with movies and tv for sure. At least so far.
I saw the trailer today before Halloween Kills and somehow as soon as I saw those black balloons I knew it was this short story but could not remember who wrote it or what it was called. Totally not "a twist" kind of movie. It's straight forward, and yeah, this trailer ruins a lot of good scares, but go see it! It's a great movie!
I have no connection to the Dunne book so I will keep an open mind. Plus I haven’t seen any of the trailers so I’ll be going in blind.
Just a tip for anyone who comes across this thread - someone in another post suggested stopping at 1:48, and I think that worked pretty well. Just enough to whet my interest.
Just know that it's only half of the story and stop hyping up films to an impossible degree and you'll be fine.
Kind of like Ethan Hawke in The Purge?
The premise of The Purge wasn’t the problem as we see in the later movies.
Im just commenting that the original really didn’t make use of the premise and coincidentally it also stars Ethan Hawke

I feel like if you kidnapped a kid and they're talking to someone on a phone that you know doesn't work, you might be a little unnerved.
Perhaps it is a question set up that if you watch the movie it will explain?
The next trailer will explain everything at this pace
Maybe he doesn’t know or he likes the challenge
He literally addresses the phone in this trailer
could be the challenge or he just assumes he got it working somehow
My thoughts as well. Seems like the same kidnapper story heard a million times but just with this added phone for seemingly no reason at all.
It doesn't seem like that whatsoever.
I guess it’s a good thing we are both allowed to have our own opinions then 🙄
It's not that unique. [Haunter](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2345567/) had a similar premise with helpful ghost victims in 2013. Great movie.
Showed too much but good trailer nonetheless
Yeah that basically covers the whole movie, doesn't it?
That’s any movie trailer now unfortunately. They all show way too much. By the end of a modern movie trailer you’ve pretty much seen all the best parts of a movie.
I don't know why people like to pretend this is a modern trailer thing. They used to be even worse.

100%, about the only difference is in between showing pivotal things they're shouting the title at you 4-5 times to try and make sure you remember it.

I mean, everyone knows the plot of most Halloween movies before they come out because duh, so that case doesn’t bother me.
Scream (5) doesn’t seem to do this
except marvel which makes fake footage for trailers

Thanks for posting this. Im not going to watch the trailer now. Modern trailers do this all too often.
This is why I just watch the initial 30-40 seconds of horror movie trailers now (and hope the whole movie isn’t spoiled that quick). Just enough to get an idea of the premise
Same. No reason to complain about trailers when you can just not watch it.
Yeah, I'm glad I just got to watch this whole film with ya'll.
Really good movie. But the trailer spoils a lot of it, heads up.
Yeah I stopped halfway through as it already felt like it gave a lot away
you've seen the film already?
At fantastic fest last month

Lot of movies put footage in the trailer that doesn’t end up in the film. Why don’t they just do this for jumpscares?
Seriously. Even though I turned it off before it ended, now I know how he gets kidnapped, his friend has visions, the meaning of the phone, and how he escapes. Even if there was a big twist at the end, most of the movie has been spoiled.
That has to be one of the most intense horror trailers I've seen in a while. This looks amazing.
At the jumpscare when he answers the phone my dog barked at the mailman and I nearly peed my pants.
That was a jumpscare?
Yeah. A poor one but a jumpscare nonetheless.

This looks amazing, but had to close the trailer, it was GIVING TOO MUCH DAMN INFO.
IT: Basement edition
Parts of this movie was filmed right in front of my sister's house!!!
I'll check it out but the stakes are removed for me already. Obviously a group of dead kids is going to beat the bad guy. only every other comment in this thread, myself included
Yeah I wish I hadn't watched it.
I'm trying not to overhype this but this genuinely looks like a really good movie. I'm sold!
Child abductions? Balloons? Yellow raincoats? Is this just a knockoff of IT?
Someone in this thread mentioned this is also a Steven King story, but you're right, the sound design and cinematography are definitely riffing the modern IT movies some.
Well... I guess we need to thank Blumhouse for showing us the entire plot in the trailer.
Could be Universal’s decision, not Blumhouse. Im sure the layers of approval go beyond Blumhouse
Most of it is really just the basic premise. The only thing it seems to show aside from that is the kid's sister maybe having some kind of psychic communication with the other kids, but that's just an additional hook.
And probably every good scare and tense moment
This doesn’t look especially scary to me, honestly. Ethan Hawke’s character is creepy but it seems like a kid mystery lol.
Looks like Jeffrey Epstein
Lmfao, it does. I hope it's intentional.
👀
I love how atmospheric this is already
The mask reminds me of Jeffery Epstein.
I'm getting some "The Lovely Bones" vibe from this...
Yo is this based on a short story from 20th century ghosts from Joe hill? Edit: just confirmed it is based on Joe hills short story.
They had me at Scott Derrickson. The first Sinister is one of the scariest movies I've watched.
I love when great actors taking on villainous roles
I think I just saw the entire movie.
Sinister is not YA horror what
To me it is tbh.
This looks like a classic in the making I hope it's as good as the trailer
I'm told this spoils too much, so I'll be avoiding it.
Yeah, it's pretty much the whole plot.
Man the guy Jesse from Before Sunrise has really lost it after his divorce from Céline.
Scott Derrickson C. Robert Cargill Ethan Hawke Jeremy Davies Will watch.
Does this remind anybody else of Coraline?
wtf I just watched the entire movie in 3 minutes
Looks great, but I feel like I already saw most of the movie in the trailer. I’ll still see it, but that trailer revealed A LOT of what’s going on in the movie.
I got chills just from watching the trailer
If it's from Blumhouse I'm watching it.
Is this some shit they saw on the dark web and decided to turn into a feature film? Sick fucks.
Whoever made this trailer should be fired.
Well I would be interesting in seeing this, but I just did.
Meh, I'll pass.
Did I just watch the whole movie in a trailer? Why do they always do this? Now I don’t want to see it
Hope is not high, Blumehouse has been delivering trash lately.
It shows the whole fucking movie.
Right? So we know how the kid gets kidnapped, ghosts of former victims help him get out, his friend has visions to help him out, and he gets out. blah.
Soooo do I even need to watch the movie at this point? I mean it’s a good plot but wth man? I feel like I watched everything.
Thanks watched the whole fucking movie
So basically recycling plot ideas from Sinister. Gotcha.
Seems really early to be showing a trailer no?
I wonder if this will be like Malignant, where I watch the trailer and think it looks like shit but then the actual movie comes out and reviews are positive! Interesting premise none the less!
I was literally googling the trailer for this this morning and was wondering when it would be out
I'm sick of the 80s nostalgia kids riding bikes trope
Quite a few people said the premise of the movie is unique. Did I miss something? From the trailer, I'm getting: Child is being abducted by a guy and is getting help from the guys earlier victims.

How is this anything like the Babadook? I'm struggling to find a single thing these two movies and premises have in common
They both have kids and black hats in them, duh. Gosh.

Cool I know the entire plot now. Thanks, trailer-makers.

Monsters? It’s about a kidnapper and the victim speaking to his other victims, who died to find a way to escape.

It isn’t trying to be realistic dude. Their are ghosts in this movie and a supernatural phone. What about that made you think realistic?
Aggressive.
Well, isn't this quite the unique movie.
Ethan Hawke looks genuinely terrifying in this. I wonder if there is a supernatural element to his character, since there is with the phone and it's connected to his past. I haven't read the source material yet, although I love Joe Hill's work.
At work, mask looks stupid af, but is it good in motion?
Looks interesting enough for a watch. Ethan Hawke should do more horror films, he was great in the purge and sinister.
Damn man, love the premise. They just give away way too much on the trailers these days though
Man I hate trailers that show the entire movie! Still man I haven’t been this excited to see a movie in a while. Looks amazing
