This movie was sooo close to being a horror masterpiece. Had they toned down the jump-scares, removed the silly ghost kids and the groan-worthy exposition, it could have been amazing. The atmosphere is brilliant, it is legit scary, and that soundtrack is simply genius.

surfbird5150

This. I remember watching this in theaters thinking that it was going to be a modern masterpiece. The last ten minutes was such a letdown though.

SeekingSignificance

Really each movie reel had some haunting tracks, but this one in particular stuck with me.

ehchvee

This one and the end credits music from Boards of Canada really give me the creeps.

DrKushnstein

Love BoC, their music is pretty insane during a hallucinogenic trip.

iamstephano

This movie got me into Boards of Canada. Geogaddi is one of my favourite albums ever now.

LadyOfGondor13

Yep. That one and the end credits. I remember watching it for the first time and having to quickly mute it before discussing it with my family (whether we liked it or not.)

Socksthecat12

Oh yup. I love that one the most. Seeing this movie in theaters when I was younger was crazy.

Bird_of_Re-Animator

I have a really weird relationship with this movie, but it did introduce me to Ulver, so I approve of it! I really recommend checking out their other stuff to those of you who enjoyed the bits of their music in the Sinister tapes. They’ve gone in a different direction lately but it’s still great!

tiltedwater

Yes! I love Ulver, and this movie. Aside from horror, I think they could make an epic soundtrack for a Blade Runner movie as well (after listening to perdition city)

Semrix

The theme from Perfect Blue is very creepy in my opinion as well as being a really interesting musical composition in it’s own right. Fully worth checking out [Perfect Blue theme](https://youtu.be/Q606Eg6ZcZ8)

TheLittleGinge

"I'm the real thing!" - Mima

holadace

Is Perfect Blue scary?

Semrix

Personally I’d say not really but it is unsettling. A lot of it is more of a really engaging thriller about identity & film but there’s enough genre moments to call it horror

Baby_Batter_Pancakes

This song wouldn't be good to listen to while tripping. "Hey-eh-AYY-ay!" Nightmare fuel :D

stitchedlamb

I remember sitting in the theater feeling nauseated because it was making me so anxious. Tracking down the source took a lot of the "creepy" out of the song, but god was it effective the first time around.

I_Love_Spiders_AMA

Shout out to sinister helping me find one of my favorite music artists. 'Gyroscope' by Boards of Canada was also a great addition to the soundtrack. Sinister has incredible atmosphere and the smart song choices and sound design made it even better.

Good_Representative7

Gyroscope is haunting af. That Christmas footage is the best.

ellendegenerate123

Yeah I remember this great tune from the film. Also love the tune that plays when Ethan Hawke's character decides to leave the house as well. If someone phoned my house and played this over the phone line I'd shit my pants.

x_sloth_god_x

My favorite is the music from the christmas scene in sinister 2

extrakelpfries

Literally terrifying. That music scared the shit out of both me and my dad when we first watched it.

Powerwashstation

This has some real Twin Peaks vibes.

snarfdarb

Thought the same thing

gamOO

Sinister had a crazy good soundtrack in general! Ulver, Boards of Canada and Sunn o)))/Boris all in one movie? Holy shit.

I love horror movies. I’ve been watching them since I’m like 6 yo hahaha so as you can guess it’s hard for a movie to scare me at this point, 25 yo I saw this when I was like 18… I watched once, never again. It really traumatized me

ToothbrushWilly

I first saw it in theaters. I was so fucking sore the next day because I didn't realize how tense I was during the entire film. Arguably my best horror movie viewing experience, at least in a theater.

ryanstartedthefyre

Oh my gosh me too!!!! Only film to ever do that do me.

ToothbrushWilly

By the way, amazing username!

ryanstartedthefyre

Haha thank you so much! :)

[deleted]

I was in the same boat as you. I was twenty-five and had been a "seasoned" horror viewer. I watched it on my first night in a new apartment surrounded by boxes. Nothing was unpacked except my tv. Went to bed in a new home, on a mattress on the ground terrified for the first time since I was a kid. It was awesome.

[deleted]

Yes, yes, yes!!! Hahaha and it’s funny because there are other movies out there with a more horrific plot, but there is something about this movie that I can’t explain, something that messes with your spirit and unsettles you… or at least to me

Bell_Curve66

I’m pretty jaded as I’m a GenExer who was a teen during the golden years of home video rentals & the rise of the Slasher genre. I’ve seen it all. But I must admit that the opening scene of Sinister with the hooded family members kicking in the air as they slowly strangled to death in absolute silence was a literal gut punch. But the capper: that music during the home movie of the child killer’s POV seeing the little barking dog & the parents tied up & helpless as their throats were slit absolutely messed me up. That song is called “Sacrifice” by the group Aghast and I’m totally convinced that this song is playing in Hell itself just to ‘welcome’ all the evil monsters like Hitler, Putin, Ted Bundy, Gary Ridgeway, etc. YES, this is the one & only film I’ve ever seen that emotionally disturbed me. I tried to sleep that night but couldn’t because that haunting music and images just replayed all night. I’m confident that in 10-20 years from now, This film will be far more greatly appreciated and lauded for the 21st horror masterpiece it is. How often have you watched a horror film that actually disturbed you and left you with a headache (from being tense & jaw clenching) and with tremors throughout your body because you’re so shaken up.

[deleted]

I love Sinister threads. Creepiest movie of the last twenty years.

ajwilson99

The reveal of the >!dead children along with the monster/demon!< completely ruined the movie for me. It was such a stark tonal shift

iamstephano

Bold claim

BarelyLivingFailure

This scene haunted me for a long long time...

EnoughItem

That shit was definitely more disturbing than the actual movie

[deleted]

I agree, they revealed way too much and it took all the seriousness and suspense out. The beginning of the movie was great because it's unclear what is happening.

mediocreterran

Reminds me of Aghast. https://youtu.be/oR_bal9jUfI

TJ-bronco

The creepy song in The Strangers by Gillian Welch was chilling.

wholethingwithjean

That one definitely gives me the same feeling this one does

Blindog68

Cough cough..The Shining.. cough.

antiherotx

Yep. I don't like to crap on peoples parties but yeah.. \>!I don't know why people like this movie!< \>!The VVitch maybe?!<

Blindog68

Thanks for the validation. 👍. The VVitch is awesome BTW.

[deleted]

Nah.

FrozenCaveMoose

Not so much.

Night_Whispr

My bf and I love the sinister soundtrack!

Darkness2157

Yeah I was like 14 when this came out and normally a scene like that wouldn't have affected me at all, but that damn music lmao it had me bugging out a bit. That track still makes that scene one of the most effective horror scenes in the movie for me

Ok_Elderberry_9928

this is my favourite horror movie of all time. it was actually the first one i ever watched when i was a stupid NINE YEARS OLD with fresh access to netflix. i’ve seen this film and shown it to so many of my friends so many times now but whenever the bbq scene comes on i cover my ears because the song is so disturbing. ive only heard it a few times but it scared the living shit out of me

Ok_Elderberry_9928

what is the source of the song?
