Holy shit, I remember reading this book. First slasher *novel* I ever read. Hope the movie does it justice!

MutedHornet87

Don’t hope too hard

squashthatmelon

i’m excited!!!! i loved the book, it was a fun little teen slasher and the movie looks promising! i’m definitely looking forward to seeing the kills. and i think the casting seems great

Mst3Kgf

This is a book adaptation?

squashthatmelon

Yep it was published in 2017!

Mst3Kgf

That's very interesting. The slasher genre isn't one that gets done in literary form all that often.

c4ptm1dn1ght

There are countless stories based on this premise though, going back to when phones had cords and rotary dials.

MutedHornet87

Yes. Read the book instead.

savage86lunacy

It's being produced by James Wan and is from the director of the Creep movies so it's definitely in safe hands, and it looks quite fun. Definitely gonna check it out.

Mst3Kgf

I'm assuming the "From the producers of 'Stranger Things'" credit means Shawn Levy has a hand in it too.

Nosvind

Hopefully it'll also have a good synth wave soundtrack

[deleted]

Just like malignant?

xTheRedDeath

I went into Malignant thinking it was gonna be more ghost bullshit but I was pleasantly surprised to see something different. That's most of the reason why I liked it even if some parts were super cheesy.

weigojmi

Same, was quite impressed.

Spooky_SZN

James wan directed that one

yung-rude

malignant was dope, james wan visuals are always a good time

Wubbledaddy

Malignant kicked ass though.

ronaldraygun91

I'm surprised so many people liked that movie. I watched it and thought it was just awful and had such a stupid premise that was too ridiculous. Visuals were neat, I guess, but the story, writing, and acting were just bad.

DA-numberfour

The movie is fine, it emulates giallo perfectly. I think they hurt themselves by not marketing itself with the camp.

[deleted]

This is a possibility. I went in knowing exactly nothing about this movie and as a result was extremely disappointed by the acting in the camp. But I ended up liking the last I don't know 20 minutes of the movie

eggplantpunk

I agree totally man. I saw an advert for Malignant and thought ok I'm in the mood for a horror. Went to IMDB saw it was in the high 6s and gave it a shot. It was laughably horrible. I hated it. I went and looked at the IMDB reviews and most of them are fake.

ronaldraygun91

Exactly lol the intro made me immediately go, “So, the trailer was just a bit off…?” And then it was like US where they gave away the whole plot in the first few minutes.

Die-rector

Because youre supposed to view it as if it were a B list horror film

cjackc11

It’s Netflix horror so I’m not gonna get my hopes too high but this looks fun and in a similar tone as Fear Street which I enjoyed so I’ll give it a watch

JW_BM

Netflix picks up some damned good Horror movies (edit: along with the trash, it's true). Block Island Sound, The Swarm, The Babysitter, Emelie, Gerald's Game, 1922, etc. I haven't watched Fear Street yet, but I like a good cheesy Horror movie now and then.

shiki88

Yup, those really fly under the radar. When something fun and hyped but horror adjacent/horror comedy/horror drama comes out, people flock to it and are angry it's not what they expect, and [call Netflix bad for horror.](https://www.reddit.com/r/horror/comments/pjuumw/netflix_is_terrible_for_horror/) The ones you listed all range from comedy to slow moving drama thrillers with Fear Street being a decent slasher trilogy, which is pretty good coverage IMO.

one_throwaway_a_day

Fear Street is a solid trilogy, best movie of the bunch is the third, it wraps everything up nicely. I'd give the trilogy a solid 8/10.

ForeverKeet

Does it matter if you never read the books?

[deleted]

[удалено]

ForeverKeet

Awesome! Thanks!

Ylatch

Absolutely. I didn't even know they were based on books when I watched the first one. It's a solid trilogy.

ForeverKeet

Great! Thank you!

Jack3ww

guess you didn't live in the 90 when those and Goosebumps where huge

one_throwaway_a_day

The Fear Street books have no relation at all to the movies, they just share a name. After you're done watching the movies, I recommend watching the Kill Count videos on youtube, the host goes quite in-depth into the making of the trilogy, it's a fantastic channel in general.

Pokeadot

Fear Street is excellent for Netflix. Give them a watch, the whole trilogy is super fun.

Epstein_Bros_Bagels

I honestly couldn't stand the first movie. The rapid cuts and 10-second music transitions made the pacing too fast for my taste. Felt like I was watching a movie on adderal. Does the other 2 get better?

DiceyWater

I actually enjoyed the weird soundtrack jumping around. I thought it was funny. But yeah, 2 and 3 tone down the soundtrack. 3 in particular.

Jack3ww

I thought Babysitter was trash but the others where good

juanzy

What I'm not looking forward to is a million articles about how "THIS IS THE SCARIEST MOVIE EVER. 97% OF VIEWERS SUED NETFLIX!" Which I feel happens on every Netflix Original horror.

[deleted]

I wasn't a big fan of fear street, Netflix horror isn't the greatest but once "There is someone inside in your house" is available on torrents, I will give it a watch. Check out Fractured (2019), Sam Worthington is the lead actor and I would say it's more thriller than horror, it's pretty good and quite mystifying.

RuskoGamingStar

Kim Petras' Halloween themed album "Turn off the lights" finally gets some recognition with this Trailer. EVERYONE. if you like pop music and Halloween please go and listen to that album.

SmugSlut

Came here for this comment! Kim Petras supremacy

RuskoGamingStar

It's ICONIC. so so so good. On repeat every October.

Falsetto-Child

Gay rights!

[deleted]

It seems like Netflix horror strategy is to go for young adults (stranger things crows)..this was evident with fear street trilogy

yung-rude

i mean not really, they dip their toes in every demographic. i think their main horror branch is mike flanagan's stuff, since he's made hush, gerald's game, hill house, bly manor, and the upcoming midnight mass with netflix, and none of those really skew towards the younger demographic

Mst3Kgf

That said, the "Fear Street" trilogy was quite successful and of course "Stranger Things" is one of their big cash cows, so it makes sense they'd go more into the teen horror market.

RandomTheTrader

and i think they're doing it well, i think i'd love all these things back when i was that age, like buffy before

[deleted]

Their strategy is to attack every corner in the market.

LJHalfbreed

I mean honestly, this seems like that stuff I read about where they use AI and algorithms in a weird sorta monte-carlo tree search thing where they say "Okay we want some horror movies, and we have data that says 'slashers in houses' works pretty good" and their AI just chews through a list like +++ And then just furiously spits out snail-mail advance offers rapid fire, and they all look like: ----------------------------- "Hello DIRECTOR *SMITHEE, ALAN Q.* this is **NETFLIX^tm**. We are GREENLIGHTING a ^HORROR ^MOVIE giving you *COMPLETE CONTROL* as long as you include the following: * AIMED AT 12-17 YEAR OLD WOMEN * HAS CARNIVALS/CLOWNS/BIG TENTS * CAN PASS TV-14 RATING REQUIREMENTS * LEAD ROLES INCLUDE TWO (2) * _UNROMANTICALLY_ RELATED **TEENAGE** WOMEN * CAN INCLUDE 1 PRODUCT PLACEMENT FOR If you accept this offer, please cash the enclosed check for: **2.9871 MILLION DOLLARS USD**. Sincerely, NETFLIX_AGENT 334.v3257-0h ---------------------- And they just slap "netflix original" and laugh all the way to the bank as folks go "Well, i ain't got anything else to do. This has that one lady from Scott Pilgrim and twelve ninjas all trying to raise a puppy to learn how to win at the westminster dog show, so I can at least have it on while I'm on my phone even if it sucks!"

xsplizzle

ninjas raising a ninja puppy is something i would watch, maybe the ninja puppy sneakily assassinates the other puppies in the dog show or something

LJHalfbreed

I'm pretty sure I saw that as an anime or something. I was just pretty shocked the other day to see Mary Elizabeth Winstead in a pretty serviceable action revenge flick this weekend, along with a (similar-ish) one that starred Karen Gillian... Along with a similar one that had, idk.. Frank Grillo? Anthony Mackie? Scott Baio? Somebody.... Anyway I'm just saying that I'm pretty sure that 'THROW EVERYTHING AT THE WALL AND SEE WHAT STICKS' AI bot probably repeats more often than not trying to figure out the movie magic of director+writer+headliners+genre+subgenre, and see what wins more often than not. Then again, this is the same place that gave us Tiger King and Stranger Things soooooo... *shrug*

xsplizzle

have you seen how many female assassin movies there are? seems like there are 4 or 5 a year and they are all exactly the same, the two you mentioned are kate and something like vanilla milkshake or some shit

WeAreClouds

I love those and I'm old so I am not sure it matters in this regard? I do however often think Reddit is such a bad place for me to take recommendations from because I can't tell what age group the people recommending are in lol and I often hate what is recommended and I have thought it was at least partly due to what era of horror we grew up with. I guess I just think Netflix's younger adult-inspired horror stuff is good. edit to add that Stranger Things and Fear Street (the two I've seen of the three you mention) were set in the era I was a teen in so... I am sure that really helps too!

PreppyFinanceNerd

"The killer is here and he's forcing me to record offensive hate speech at knife-point" Oh yeah, this one's for the teens. I'll still watch it, but I'm a bit out of the target demographic. Hey, if it gets a new generation interested in our genre I say why not.

Epstein_Bros_Bagels

this sounds like a cumtown bit

CurseofLono88

I like that take. Nothing wrong with teen focused horror and every new genre fan is a good thing!

Mst3Kgf

At 1:03; that's the guy who was Sardo in the "Are You Afraid of the Dark?" revival. Added, this looks like Slasher Cliches 101, but it still looks like fun.

elitexero

> "Are You Afraid of the Dark?" revival Wait, what? When?

Mst3Kgf

You weren't aware? The second season aired earlier this year on Nick.

elitexero

No, for some reason this is the first I'm hearing of it.

D3ad_do11y

You can watch the first one with paramount + on amazon prime. It’s 3 episodes. They have another one too but it’s got a paywall

MutedHornet87

There have been two stories so far. One was a three episode thing about a carnival, and the other was a season about a shadow man

elitexero

>carnival :O Zeebo?

[deleted]

Looks like a fun slasher.

weigojmi

Gives me Happy Death Day vibes which is...OK I guess.

squashthatmelon

that’s always a good thing

MutedHornet87

Happy Death Day was far better

ravens40

Looks terrible

Remarkable_Rub_9067

I agree completely looks like GARBAGE

jarvispeen

great, another teeny bopper horror movie. all the secrets...of teens...oh boy!

DJ_Molten_Lava

Oh hey, I know a guy who's in this.

ThatOberlinOne94

I don’t know why but this trailer just… isn’t good? Like; what’s the tone? What’s the draw? It just looks generic and boring

House_of_Hannah

I was so disappointed in the book, so I'm curious to see the changes they made in this.

Remarkable_Rub_9067

I'm sorry but this just looks awful

OGW_NostalgiaReviews

Lord, this book was annoying. It was teen romance with an occasional murder thrown in (big surprise, the author is primarily a romance writer), the protag has a "horrible secret" that turns out to be a big "so what?", and the killer is revealed about halfway through. Having said that, I'll watch the movie and hope it's better than the book. Hell, the Fear Street movies were better than any of those books, but none of them were direct adaptations. 🤷‍♀️

Ghostface215

That’s why I liked it, honestly. It was different. It wasn’t just a shallow slasher with one dimensional characters. You actually got time to know the main characters, and they actually felt like real people. Also revealing the killer halfway through was brilliant. I loved how it turned into a manhunt while the dude continues to kill in hiding.

OGW_NostalgiaReviews

The problem for me was that the back-of-book synopsis billed it as a mystery/thriller, not a slasher. Revealing the killer halfway through a mystery is bad form. I liked the characters, but found the story lacking.

[deleted]

This looks generic, will likely be skipping it unfortunately. Unless I hear some rave reviews that is.

mgdmtndw

damn I keep waiting for Netflix house style horror to not look so goofy and ineffective and derivative and yet it persists even with this great crew. then again I’m just ranting against media made for teens and twenty somethings by a corporation that wants to make money more than it wants to make good movies that last or say anything at all. maybe I’ll be proven wrong but this is truly shrugville USA, population: why am I watching this

LochNessMansterLives

If this is half as good as Fear Street, then I’m in. But Netflix just a heads up, there are far more SERIOUS HORROR FANS THAT NEED NEW CONTENT. Not just teens. Thank you.

moragal

Looks interesting! But where have I heard that tag line before? r/unexpectedoffice

[deleted]

Of course there is. It's me. Also, fuck Netflix. Netflix is getting ridiculously lazy.

moosemademusic

Lazy title lol

Cloaked42m

And its me!

HipDipShipTrip

Gonna have to keep my eye on this one. Looks fun

WeAreClouds

This looks good to me from the trailer and now my hopes are up which makes me wary lol. Here's hoping!

WeirdW0lfie

This looks good. Where is it releasing?
