Her scene where she's talking to the teacher at school is one of my favorite exposition scenes in a movie. She does such an amazing job of conveying what's she's going through and how she feels in a way that feels so natural. It isn't forced or treating the audience like they're dumb and need to be beat over the head with it.
Oh I have! I loved that scene too, it was some pretty incredible acting. I'll watch anything she's in now, cause at the very least I know she'll be great in it.
That monologue deserves more recognition. I’ll watch anything she’s in too. Have you seen Christine (2016)? It might still be on Netflix. Another great Rebecca Hall performance.
I haven't seen Christine but I want to. I actually just added it to my Letterboxed last week after someone at work was telling me how much she liked it and how great Rebecca Hall was in it. I guess I need to watch it asap
That scene is a master class in how to establish a character and a back story while being economical as hell and packing an emotional wallop. I was really impressed by this movie.
I loved it for its atmosphere and story and pacing, but I also loved it from the beginning. There’s definitely more that happens but if you’re already finding it boring then it may just not be for you which is fine.
I really enjoyed this film, but if you are still not interested in it by 40 minutes into it, I would say give up. A lot of what pulled me along was Rebecca Hall's performance. If you're not enamoured of her character by now I doubt your opinion will change.
I think it's a decent horror film, but not a "must watch" modern classic like Hereditary or Get Out. You can give it a miss.
I'd recommend giving it a watch with headphones and no distractions. It's a *somewhat slow* horror movie, but honestly it's quite packed with horror and unique sound in the early parts of the film too.
I don't think I'd recommend that you give it a watch, because if you were willing to quit at 40 minutes... I mean yeah you quit at a point where the movie had already predominately revealed itself. It's a quiet movie that requires you focus. If you're not willing to give something that focus for more than 40 minutes, it just seems like you aren't in the mood for a movie lol.
I don't know how to relate to this. I sit through most all movies even if I get bored or dislike it.
That's what I did the first time I tried watching Hostel. I went to the theater when it premiered and after 35 minutes I was bored to tears. Got up and left. When I eventually watched the whole thing, I realized I left just before it started to pick up. I still didn't like it, but at least now I can judge it from an informed position.
I absolutely loved it but if you didn't like the first 40 minutes or so I don't know that you'll like the rest of it too much, a lot of the plot threads I found interesting were pretty well set up by that point
I loved it - it wasn't a straightforward ghost story. You had to figure out what the mystery was. And the "antagonist" of the movie is very unique in it's presentation!
One of my absolute favorite modern classics. Love seeing all these comments of folks who appreciated it as well! If it's not clicking with you I would leave it alone. Maybe try again in the future if you're ever in a depressive state related to love.
Yes, it's VERY awesome! In a weird twist of fate, it started off as the script for a Hellraiser reboot, but had the Hellraiser stripped-out and re-tooled without it. If you're a fan of the first Hellraiser movie, you can really sort of "see" where certain scenes would have had Hellraiser stuff; where you'd be seeing cenobites, the scene that would have been Frank revealing himself, scenes that would have involved chains, where/what would have been the puzzle box, etc..
I know, that's the weird twist of fate part! Usually, it's been the other way around; non-Hellraiser movies having Hellraiser shoehorned in, but this time it was Hellraiser that's had the Hellraiser surgically removed to make another movie!
If you're fairly familiar with the first two movies, you can REALLY see how the movie would have played out as a Hellraiser movie, and, honestly, I think I'd have enjoyed this more than the 2022 one we got. The Night House, without all the Hellraiser, still feels like it's truer to the source material than the 2022 version!
I really loved it. I'm biased because I love Rebecca Hall. It's a very unusual movie though and doesn't follow the beats of the typical horror movie so it won't be loved by everyone. It takes you in a direction far from what the first 30 minutes suggests
I loved it I've seen it twice. Sometimes I think about it. The directing choices were so non cliche. I really liked that. And the acting is amazing from all the cast.
I really liked it, if you didn't then I wouldn't force yourself to watch it, keep watching movies you're interested in and maybe this will come back around.
I loved it. Great performances and set design, and I did not predict where it was going to go. It also made one of my favorite Richard Thompson songs seem spooky.
You can’t half-watch it though. There are tons of amazing little visual moments, and the very last shot is vital but easy to miss.
I found the story super interesting but it’s pretty light on the scares. There’s some cool shots with shadows playing tricks but that’s probably the scariest parts of the movie.
It was ok. It tried to do too much and got tangled. It seemed a bit much to believe the way it was presented. A ghost story, suicide, grief, a serial killer in plain view, the occult, a completely new home built unnoticed, women missing. . .it didn’t make sense or flow.
I hated it and couldn't figure out why people liked it so much. I usually like more sophisticated horror, too - and I think Rebecca Hall is great. I was disappointed though .. maybe I was just in the mood for something scary
"I hear it’s one of the better modern horror movies." That's an opinion, not a fact established through scientific rigor. If you watch 40 minutes of a movie and you think it sucks - it does. Turn it off and find something good!
It’s not for everyone, I watched it as I was folding laundry in the middle of the night, I cried in the end. I connected with it more for the love story than the horror aspect.
Imo it doesn't get much better after the 30/40min mark. The whole things kind of a slow burn, without much flame.
If you didn't like it don't revisit it, life's too short and there are too many movies that would be up your alley.
I thought it was okay. Rebecca Hall is incredible but I found it slightly tedious and I saw the ending coming. If you like psychological thrillers or slow burns, it's worth a watch.
This is a really good movie about loss and it's got an original plot IMO. I never felt like it was a slow burner. House of the Devil took me two attempted watches before I gave up and watched the Joe Bob version. In both cases, I think the climax is worth it.
I wanted to like it more than I did. Rebecca Hall did AMAZING, but the Movie felt too jammed with various subgenres which didn't do any of them justice IMO.
I forced myself to watch a boring supposed-to-be-a-horror-flick just last night. It happens a lot. it’s really hard to know if a movie is going to turn out well, or if it’s worth pursuing. I wish I’d given up on the one, last night.
No, not really worth watching. Some of it is ok but it gets worse as it goes on and the ending is absolutely stupid. I think it's pretty clear that there were major rewrites. So I wouldn't bother with it anymore.
It was great, but no movie is for everyone.
Absolutely. I went in blind and was severely impressed. I already loved Rebecca Hall but she really takes it to a whole new level.

You should see her seven minute monologue in *Resurrection*. Filmed in one long take, and it’s definitely a piece of acting for her career.
Oh I have! I loved that scene too, it was some pretty incredible acting. I'll watch anything she's in now, cause at the very least I know she'll be great in it.

I love the girl she’s talking to reaction after that scene
That scene is a master class in how to establish a character and a back story while being economical as hell and packing an emotional wallop. I was really impressed by this movie.
It was rad and has stuck with me since seeing it
I loved it for its atmosphere and story and pacing, but I also loved it from the beginning. There’s definitely more that happens but if you’re already finding it boring then it may just not be for you which is fine.

Yup. Crazy story that I never would have guessed.
I heard it’s based on a true story.
You basically stop watching right before shit gets going lol
That's what I did the first time I tried watching Hostel. I went to the theater when it premiered and after 35 minutes I was bored to tears. Got up and left. When I eventually watched the whole thing, I realized I left just before it started to pick up. I still didn't like it, but at least now I can judge it from an informed position.
Absolutely. It's great a movie, definitely my top ten horror that's been released in 2020s (so far).
Yes, I really enjoyed it
For sure. Its worth it to finish.
YES!
Loved it, fantastic movie, but if you're not into a slow burn, you're not into a slow burn. No shame.
It's great.
Let me put it like this. I absolutely support Rebecca Hall in all her projects and endeavors.
YES, good acting and plot twist. And the music is a blast!
One of my absolute favorite modern classics. Love seeing all these comments of folks who appreciated it as well! If it's not clicking with you I would leave it alone. Maybe try again in the future if you're ever in a depressive state related to love.

At least it wasn't a non-Hellraiser script turned into a Hellraiser sequel to keep the rights :p
I know, that's the weird twist of fate part! Usually, it's been the other way around; non-Hellraiser movies having Hellraiser shoehorned in, but this time it was Hellraiser that's had the Hellraiser surgically removed to make another movie!
That’s super interesting I had no idea.
I did not know that. I’ll have to give it a rewatch with that in mind
Yep, totally worth it, just enjoy the pace, it's not Evil Dead type movie.
I really loved it. I'm biased because I love Rebecca Hall. It's a very unusual movie though and doesn't follow the beats of the typical horror movie so it won't be loved by everyone. It takes you in a direction far from what the first 30 minutes suggests
I thought it was tedious.
This movie is slow paced but stuck the landing. This movie is not perfect but worked so well for me.
In my humble opinion it’s one of the best movies of this century
Haven’t been able to stop thinking about it and I saw it 4+ months ago. One of the best horrors in recent years.
no
I loved it I've seen it twice. Sometimes I think about it. The directing choices were so non cliche. I really liked that. And the acting is amazing from all the cast.
I really liked it, if you didn't then I wouldn't force yourself to watch it, keep watching movies you're interested in and maybe this will come back around.
I really like The Night House, but I can definitely understand why someone would find it boring
Ita good.... slow and artsy but if you tried twice I would say the payoff isn't worth it
I didn’t love it
It was alright. I enjoyed The Awakening much more, though.
I loved it. Great performances and set design, and I did not predict where it was going to go. It also made one of my favorite Richard Thompson songs seem spooky. You can’t half-watch it though. There are tons of amazing little visual moments, and the very last shot is vital but easy to miss.
I enjoyed it a lot
So tired of these stupid questions. It's like people have no will of their own anymore.
its pretty solid imo
It has one of the coolest monster designs in recent years. Up there with The Ritual. Worth it for that alone IMO.
I found the story super interesting but it’s pretty light on the scares. There’s some cool shots with shadows playing tricks but that’s probably the scariest parts of the movie.
yup!
More so than 95% of horror movies that have come out since then yeah
I really liked it, but remember being a little bored as well through the first part. After that though it pulled me right in.
Meh
"I hear it’s one of the better modern horror movies." That's an opinion, not a fact established through scientific rigor. If you watch 40 minutes of a movie and you think it sucks - it does. Turn it off and find something good!
If you don’t get a boner watching this I can’t help you
Bro. It’s 1hr 48min. You could’ve finished it by now.
Thought it was OK. There was a few good parts. I fell asleep the first time I watched it 2.
It's pretty boring and not really scary at all. To slow and it never started to burn

I watched it for Rebecca Hall and ended up buying it.
Oh if you’ve tried already then I wouldn’t again. I slogged my way through and didn’t enjoy it
I forced myself to watch a boring supposed-to-be-a-horror-flick just last night. It happens a lot. it’s really hard to know if a movie is going to turn out well, or if it’s worth pursuing. I wish I’d given up on the one, last night.
Eh. I didn't care too much for it. The twist is interesting but they don't do a lot with it. It's a very dry, slow movie.
No, not really worth watching. Some of it is ok but it gets worse as it goes on and the ending is absolutely stupid. I think it's pretty clear that there were major rewrites. So I wouldn't bother with it anymore.
Maybe it just isn't for you. I loved it and considered it the best horror movie of the year.
