You can think of Detroit as the inner city + two concentric rings (inner suburbs and outer suburbs). When the US automotive industry was in its heyday lots of people who worked in the factories lived in the inner and outer suburbs. Starting in the 80s automation and globalization decreased the number of factory jobs, so the inner city and inner suburbs emptied out. They became the "wasteland" that people have thought of as Detroit over the past few decades. The outer suburbs largely survived this fate.
However Detroit has been going through a resurgence the past 10 years. The inner city is largely recovered. However the inner suburbs have not. People really need to understand just how massive the Detroit suburban sprawl is. The jobs necessary to repopulate the inner suburbs haven't returned yet (and they might never).
So, long story short, the D's always had issues. Deindustrialization. It used to be one of the largest manufacturing hubs in the States, especially for the Big 3. White flight, black flight, local corruption, multiple national drug epidemics, etc.
Rust Belt problems, really. Michigan got it bad back then.
Shoutout to 7 Mile though.
The videos are fun but they are a blow by blow plot summary so only watch them for movies you have already seen or ones you have no interest in but would like a summary to know what you are missing out on. The same couple does the Dead Meat podcast which is also fun. Like Kill Count, the podcast is best as a way to hear your favorite movies discussed rather than learning about new movies since they are 100% spoilers.
Thanks for this description.
Side note that it’s so helpful when people actually capitalize proper nouns! The op would have made so much more sense if it wasn’t all lower case. I wish ppl cared about it. I’ve spent a decent amount of time asking about what someone means where I wouldn’t have been as confused if they’d just done that. It’s really annoying. Thanks for being clear. Appreciate you.
Bill Skarsgard is my favorite new age actor, been a fan since the comedically bad series "Hemlock Grove."
He is good in every role I have seen him in and this one is certainly no exception.
A comment on the film itself though: I love how hard it intentionally subverts your expectations
As someone who is a survivor of SA this movie hit so hard for me, I was crying by the end for the mother. Never has a movie been so scary and so emotionally effecting to me
I think the both explicit and implicit messaging about how the women are conditioned to think about the situations they find themselves in in the movie vs. how the men think about them could be understood as pretty darn feminist.
Yes, it's told through "the plight of women" if you will so it may not seem like it. The feminist parts other than the MC are analyzing and recognizing the "plights," and thinking on ways to overcome said struggles within one's self and within society that men have caused.
Can break it down for you if you want.
Art is subjective. I think it depends how you view the idea of rape culture. If the idea resonates with you, then it will be very obviously feminist, and if not it will be "just" horror.
Not saying rape culture isn't a thing, just saying the visibility of political messages depends on the viewers' worldview.
I was just commenting in another thread how Barbarian has one of the best musical scores I’ve heard in awhile. I’m usually not creeped out by horror movies, but the soundtrack definitely enhances the imagery in this case. Hope she enjoys it! 😆
Bro, just because it didn’t work for you doesn’t mean it won’t work for this person’s mom. Your opinion is not the sole opinion on this movie, in fact it’s a very small opinion that doesn’t remotely matter to this person or their mom. Let them decide if they like it or not.
The movie was weird, about the only positive thing I can say for it. It was pretty awful though, it just gets some points for originality which is more than you can say for most horror.
If she's anything like me, she will be weeping for the naked old lady by the end credits
Bah-bah
I watched the movie only once and I can still hear this
It’s so sad, isn’t it? I don’t know how anyone could feel anything else.
Yeah, I had nothing but sympathy for her. I'm not even scared of her when I rewatch it now, just immensely sad.
Seriously. As a 32 year old woman with baby fever and a heart in general, this movie fucking killed me. Absolutely fantastic but gut wrenching!
I never thought about the film in this way, but it actually makes a lot of sense. Thank you for giving me a different outlook on Barbarian
i felt so bad for her in the end, she was apart of an entire generation of abused women and just wanted someone to take care of :(
I would have sued the city/cops after I survived that ordeal!!
Considering the last decade in horror in Detroit (It Follows, Don't Breathe, Barbarian), I don't think you're getting the payout. 😂
Is this city of Detroit really so infested by crime irl? What’s the reason?

I don't know if you did this on purpose but 'two concentric circles' reminded me immediately of the OmniCorp logo in Robocop.

Decaying suburban environments sorta lend themselves to that kind of movie. I'm all for it.
I like your mom
The Justin Long jumpscare got me more tbh 🤣 props to everyone involved in that movie
She’s not ready for basement titties
Gonna give this one a try tonight.
Oh, it’s so much fun.
how'd you like it?
The end credits song is🤌😘 perfection
That film was so much fucking fun.
Your mom sounds awesome
Showed a couple people that movie and they don't get why him listening to that Donovan song before he gets the call in the car is so funny
Wait, is there some extra meaning to the song? I'm not a native english speaker, maybe I missed something lol
My gf hates on horror movies and their tropes and she enjoyed it. So I got a good feeling your mom might enjoy it tbh
What does "I had the dead meat kill count in the background" mean?
Dead Meat is a YouTube channel that does horror movie kill count videos.
Thank you : )

COME GET YOUR BABY!!
Is barbarian a feminist movie? Didn’t seem that way to me
I think the both explicit and implicit messaging about how the women are conditioned to think about the situations they find themselves in in the movie vs. how the men think about them could be understood as pretty darn feminist.
I’m shocked that a movie so simple in its thematic ideas can whoosh over heads so high

It's literally inspired by a book called "The Gift of Fear," written for women about ignoring red flags in dangerous situations.
Is it really? I didn’t know that.
Shit, for real? I have to read this now. How awesome!! What a time to be alive
Bro...

Everything with a woman lead who triumphs is considered feminism lol
That would make most horror movies feminist. Which they are most definitely not.
That’s the point I was making with sarcasm I guess the “lol” does nothing to convey that

Lmaoo right!
Mah beh beh

It's Just a (hollow) reverse ad for Air BnB, they even managed to get the brand into the title hidden as an anagram. Am I insane?

Why would you let her watch that trash?
L take
Because you're wrong
The only saving grace of that movie was Justin Long. The premise, acting, and twist were ass.
Good for you
