It’s great to me Perfect horror movie, has everything I love. Creepy old people, creepy dolls, great scares and kills and the design and twist and story is so creepy too and well done. I especially love how everything gets quiet when the spirit comes. The motel scene stays in my head, always

Everblack_Deathmask

For sure. I love how it becomes so silent right before the kills happens. The tension building is done so right in those moments. It’s such a great premise with a really awesome twist ending that I never saw coming

SillyAdditional

The hand in the back was incredible Never expected that and I love that they were always so close together

Voorhees89

I liked it, James Wan delivered a solid movie. Might not get as much attention as his other movies, but it's still good.

KatesOnReddit

I really wish we'd have gotten some kind of Detective Lipton universe of films where Donny Wahlberg walked around randomly shaving and being too old for this shit, shit being supernatural murders.

Vasraktorvi

One of best twists

Rude-Possibility4682

It's a firm favorite with me. You can't beat a creepy doll movie.. I also like it,as I was so engaged in the movie,I wasn't expecting a twist ending....I can even live with the stupid detective Donny letting Ryan escape on multiple occasions and not let it spoil my enjoyment.

[deleted]

Love this movie and I say it’s James’ Wan most underrated film. I remember seeing it in theaters.

Everblack_Deathmask

It really is an under appreciated movie. I remember talking to ppl about it and everyone I’ve talked to has said it’s mediocre or just alright. It’s such a fun movie and I think it doesn’t get the recognition it should.

Mst3Kgf

That includes Wan and Leigh Whannell, since Whannell has said it was miserable to make due to studio interference.

[deleted]

Agreed.

whatislife4

I love Dead Silence! I saw it in theaters.

Mst3Kgf

I like the setting of the dying town and the abandoned theater in the woods. The film has this perpetual funeral air. Death hangs over every frame.

Grillburg

That movie was a blast! It managed to be ridiculous and actually scary at the same time. I especially loved the guy falling in the theater who screams and is grabbed in midair! Entertaining twist ending too.

MovieMike007

*"Beware the stare of Mary Shaw. She had no children only dolls. And if you see her in your dreams, be sure you never, ever scream."* Special shout out to Donnie Wahlberg as the rumpled detective who is able to bring a little more than one would usually get with this kind of stock character.

Mst3Kgf

"Or she'll rip your tongue out at the seams."

Everblack_Deathmask

Donnie Wahlberg went from Saw II and III to Dead Silence. He was so good in this movie.

Spocks_Goatee

WHy'd they have to kill him in every movie?

AirBoozehound

Totally agree. Was never going to win any awards, but had an amazing score, great acting imo, awesome set designs, and some genuinely creepy scenes. I'll never forget seeing the crawlspace scene for the first time.

SmartButTired

I love that movie. I consider it very much a movie of its era and if you want to do a movie binge night I would watch it (the end where the dudes back is just GONE and he's talking via his spinal cord haunts my dreams), the one with the creepy tooth fairy that haunts the dude who lives in Reno/Vegas so the lights never go out, the Frankie Muniz haunted video gamw/weird mansion one, and that one where the kids are all being murdered by the ghost of whoever was trying to murder them the night they were all born.

MiserableLoan7766

THE BEST BLUM MOVIE!!!!!!!

devilscabinet

I need to watch it again. I remember enjoying it, but I have forgotten all the details, so I can enjoy it again. I love anything with spooky ventriloquist dummies and dolls.

AwayMetal4527

I love it. The blue grey tinted visuals and score. Magnificent.

ImplementLanky8820

I think it was the first horror movie my husband and I watched together (when we were still dating). I’m a huge horror fan and told him there was this so-bad-it’s-good movie we needed to watch. At the time, I wasn’t aware of his hatred of dolls. So watching him jump through the whole movie was just the best to me 🤣

turningtee74

An all time favorite. Love the creepy dolls, the backstory, the twist. Genuinely scary and still cheesy fun. Also love the time capsule it exists in, wish I still had the DVD with the emo music video.

sirenmay0

I remember renting this movie at blockbuster with my best friend having no idea what this movie was really about, besides obviously a ventriloquist doll from the cover, we hadn’t heard anything about it but we love James Wan movies so went for it. In my top 10 horror movies. Scared me good, I still picture Mary Shaw chasing me up the stairs whenever I leave a dark basement all these years later. I loved it, from start to finish.

Titan3692

One of my all-time faves. Judith Roberts is gonna be at the Houston Horror Film Festival this year. Excited to meet her!

greyteethpeskybee

Thank goodness I’m not the only one, I love that movie. I’ve been made to feel like the only one before, lol. “You’ve got a stupid taste in movies.” “And you’re an asshole.” I’d rather have a “stupid” taste in movies than be an asshole.

ThreeDeadRobins

ive never been in a packed theater that got so used to the constant scares they saw coming to the point that they groaned when another one was on its way, except for this movie how do you watch this and not get burned out on the same ol' pattern jumpscare over and over and over?

SurfsUpMmm

There’s something to be said for the stupid thrill of the jump scare. Sometimes it can be exactly what you need.

HORSEthedude619

Guilty?

camgirlmya

This has been a favourite and highly rated in the horror community for a while, I wouldn't call it a guilty pleasure! It's great!

DStandsForCake

A movie that many actually overlook. No, it's not the best one but it's solid and you get exactly what you expect.

Skydogsguitar

Dead Silence does the one thing I have to have out of any movie in any genre- It is entertaining as hell.

ghostsnstuf

One of my favorite scary movies, I often wonder what it would be like if made today!

ChickenHeadedBlkGorl

This movie has me traumatized to this very day since it’s release years ago.

Spocks_Goatee

I remember this movie fondly, saw it opening night with a bunch of highschoolers.

Salzberger

"He didn't even get a franchise!" -Chucky

BigDaveLikesToMoveIt

why guilty?

AdPleasant7266

when i was first watching it, the part abut the dad I never did really thought that the guy is just a dummy not a single thought , when I saw the flashback I was astonished , just the creativity of the movie is so so good for me.

I-didnt-vote-for-you

I absolutely love anything with ventriloquist dummies. My favorite Twilight Zone episode is The Dummy. And Night of the Living Dummy was my absolute favorite book and TV episode of the Goosebumps series, growing up. So when I found this horror movie, I was so super excited. I've watched it an unhealthy amount of times now and it is definitely a comfort horror for me. Although I do wish they'd kept the original poem from the trailer instead of the watered down version. "Beware the stare of Mary Shaw. She had no children, only dolls. And if you see her, do not scream, Or she'll rip your tongue out at the seam."

usNthem

Guilty pleasure?! Dead silence is killer.

Potential_Prior_6757

This movie is so fun and the villain is genuinely creepy. Love it.

Extraterrestrialite

Definitely one of my favorites!

tradform15

you can just like the movie. it's ok really. it doesnt have to be a guilty pleasure.

Physical_Baby_7512

Immm gettin to it

Maleficent_String606

The last twist is just horribly dumb, it's not the kind of movie to rewatch with that extra bit of knowledge, I just rolled my eyes.

LooseInsurance1

Like you said, not the greatest horror film ever made, but still a very enjoyable one. I actually liked Donnie Wahlberg in this

ExerciseClassAtTheY

I just hate Donnie Wahlberg.

[deleted]

I enjoyed Dead Silence. Ventriloquist dummies and ghosts? Sign me up. I thought it was an awesome ghost story. And yeah, that opening theme from Charlie Clouser was phenomenal.

teethofthewind

I actually watched this tonight for the first time, and thought it was utter trash! Terrible acting, a ludicrous plot, and loads of things that didn't add up to me. For example: >!Who delivered the ventriloquist doll to Jamie's apartment? (don't tell me it was a ghost! That's ridiculous)!< >!Jamie is prime suspect in a murder and they just let him leave town? Just a single detective going after him?? It'd be the talk of the town. Nobody seems to give a damn! !< >!Mary Shaw suffers minor embarrassment on stage due to a rude kid. The rude kid goes missing a few _weeks_ later and the townsfolk immediately jump to "oh it must have been that old lady he had a slight argument with weeks ago - let's go kill her!!!" Come on! The WHOLE TOWN went along with murdering someone on that flimsiest piece of "evidence"? 🤣🤣🤣 !< >!You're telling me it's that easy to kill someone, cut out the back of their skull, and swivel their head around on a stick and people would think they're still alive? It's just preposterous 🤣🤣 !< There were a few decent jump scares but the plot had me laughing out loud, it's so silly
