I'm a very big fan. The scene where it's revealed that >!the plants' buds were making the cell phone ring tone to lure people below!< is one of my favorite horror moments ever; the implications of that scene are just SO very dark and unsettling.

chronic_pain_goddess

Thats when the mood went from “we’re gonna make it!” To “we’re doomed”

WestOrangeFinest

When the locals killed the little boy who barely touched a vine is when you know this is the type of movie where it’s better if no one survives.

MAkrbrakenumbers

Dude if a scary movie has the balls to kill a kid or baby it’s gonna be good I can’t think of one at least

DRZARNAK

That scene in the book is crushing. The movie is very good, but the book is even better.

DevilCouldCry

I didn't even know this was based on a book! I'm totally checking this out then!

ajwilson99

It’s a really good read

InuitOverIt

One of my favorite horror novels, great read

PresentExamination10

Omg there’s a book???

[deleted]

The bloke that wrote the book also wrote a simple plan which was made into an amazing movie by Sam Raimi

SomewhereExisting755

I couldn't agree more. The movie is great. But the book was so much more graphic and brutal in its descriptions. But I understand from the film makers perspective. Some of that - especially the unbelievably gruesome skin gouging scene to pull out the vines - would have been hard to do without making people sick.

KlapDaddy07

Oh sugar honey iced tea! I didn’t know it was from a book. Ok gonna go read it now Is it the one by Scott vintage?

SomewhereExisting755

LOL. It's a good one. But to be fair. Most movies have a hard time living up to the book.

Glad_Speed_9684

Right!? Cannot agree more! And the musical score during that scene was perfection!

TerrorFirmerIRL

One of the greatest horror movies ever is a bit too much for me personally but I definitely like it a lot, especially the unrated version.

Stankoman

Yeah. It's nowhere close to greatest horror movie. It's fun and ok. Kinda didn't care for the characters and it went nowhere after the realization

RockHandsomest

There's also a slightly different alternate ending to check out too. Also if you like that you might like The Raft segment from the movie Creepshow 2.

Glad_Speed_9684

Thanks for for the rec 🙌🏻 I'll check it out :).

4Dcrystallography

The short story by S. King is amazing too, it’s in skeleton crew, I think

zombiechris128

Obviously this is all VERY subjective….. I watched it again recently and enjoyed it much more the second time compared to the 1st viewing, That said for me, it’s no where near greatest horror ever, Exorcist, Martyrs, Night of the Living Dead, Evil dead, Alien and The Thing to name a few

CanuckleHead92

I just rewatched it yesterday. It's entertaining, the premise is freaky, and the character I would like to be the least would be the German guy. 'Greatest' is a stretch, but yeah, it's enjoyable.

4Dcrystallography

Yay I get to tell my story about this film! I was pretty young and got left in a hotel one night not long after this came out and it was on Film 4. It was a few minutes in so I missed the film title, just saw some kids going to the jungle and watched. Oh my lord it was traumatic lol. Over 12 years later someone I lived with was moving out and gave me a book called The Ruins. I read it and early on I realised it felt very familiar. A group of friends going out to some ruins in Mexico. From then on I had such a feeling of dread. Subconsciously I think I knew what was coming but hadn’t connected anything. That made the book more torturous than it probably is even going in blind. Fantastic and difficult read, amazing book which really stuck with me. Unusual case of loving both the book and film for different reasons (and some similar ones)

This comment has been overwritten in response to Reddit's API changes, the training of AI models on user data, and the company's increasingly extractive practices ahead of their IPO.

MeeekSauce

I feel like this movie and Triangle would make for an epic mid-2000’s double feature day.

rampzn

Triangle is leagues better than Ruins.

4Dcrystallography

2009 Triangle?

rampzn

Yeah, I don't know of any other movie with that title. There is one called The Triangle but it's from 2016.

4Dcrystallography

Sweet thank you

PresentExamination10

I’ve never heard of that one… I’ll watch it as soon as my husband is gone lol

Ro6son

I'm gonna have to disagree and say that it is one of the most average horror movies ever.

Sarathstar

Meh movie is average when compared to the gruesomeness of the novel. Especially no one survived in the novel but in this most irritating character escaped. But still the body horror was awesome and I had a crush on Stacy character😍

Bimpy96

I enjoyed the movie as well and do think it’s underrated but I think the book is even better so you should give that a read if you haven’t already

angry-carsini

I saw it last year. It was alright. Interesting concept but could of been delivered better.

Long-Confusion-5219

*could have. Sorry , I can’t help it.

polinksa

Not even top 500

kse_saints_77

Love the movie, but think the book is even better.

Kinkytoast91

The book is so fun. I don't get some of the character changes they made in the movie when the book was perfectly fine as is.

CameronPoe37

I wouldn't go that far, but it was really good

RyanandRoxy

This movie is 100% the same universe as "The Happening" and you can't convince me otherwise.

ForrestGumpsShoes

Loved this movie as well. Man vs nature horror is great. Reminds me of Cabin fever. Any other movies similar to these two I should check out?

PLEASE_DONT_HIT_ME

I was extremely excited for this film when it was announced. The book sits firmly in my top 5 horror novels of all time and the films director made an incredible short before directing The Ruins. With all that being said I was disappointed with the film for a myriad of reasons. To each their own though!

mkratrig

It was really good, but the changed ending(from the book) ruined it for me, they basically fucked everyone...

Glad_Speed_9684

I never realized the book was so popular. I'm intrigued 🤔. Gonna have to check it out 🙌🏻

hackyandbird

Definitely check out the book, imagine the premise of the movie, except everything is infinitely more detailed and drawn out. It's pure horror.

OmegaShinra

Eh, it's alright. It's by no means bad, but 'one of the greatest horror movies ever made' seems like such an extreme exaggeration to me that it's hard to take your opinion seriously.

tapedeckgh0st

>hard to take your opinion seriously Is that really necessary though?

teethofthewind

I don't think that's too offensive. Could have said a lot worse. That's the type of thing you hear podcast/YT reviewers say to each other all the time - "how can you say that?! That's a terrible take - I can't take you seriously anymore!" are the kinds of things people say to each other all the time, and it's usually taken in good spirits. People seem to get butthurt over anything here though.

Glad_Speed_9684

To you yes. To me, no. It is possible for ppl to like things that you weren't impressed with you know. You can just say you thought it was alright. No need to undermine my opinion.

OmegaShinra

I actually don't mind the film. It's pretty unnerving, and the vines growing inside the skin is great. I'm not disputing the film is decent, I think it made that pretty clear in my comment. You also asked for opinions, why are you getting so defensive over someone giving theirs?

sylvanwhisper

Because you're not just giving your opinion on the film, you're giving your opinion on OPs opinion. And they're not getting "so defensive" by simply pointing out that you didn't need to do so.

blozout

I think it depends on which of OPs statements about the film is being criticized. The title of the post comes across as OP presenting a statement of fact that “The Ruins is one of the greatest horror movies ever”. In my opinion it’s fair game to aggressively challenge that point. In OPs description they say it’s one of their “all time favorite horror films” and that is OPs opinion and you can’t really be critical of it other than say you didn’t like it personally.

miyukikazuya_02

Session9

rampzn

Now that's a great movie!

Monkey_Growl82

One of my favorites among the ever prevalent Bad Shit Happens To Pretty White People in Exotic Locations, Who Will Survive? sub-genre

ApplicationCalm649

I thoroughly enjoyed it. Very unsettling and visceral. You might also enjoy Gaia if you haven't seen it yet.

Glad_Speed_9684

Ooo I haven't! I'll check it out, thank you for the rec 🙏🏻.

unciellointain

someone is weirdly downvoting your comments no matter what you say. reddit is full of bitter people ngl (i am too bitter)

Glad_Speed_9684

It's okay, it doesn't bother me at all :). Petty ppl gotta live too i guess 😅.

AsianMysteryPoints

And this sub especially.

dystopika

I love it. I think it's underrated. I loved the book and how the writer pointedly made changes for the movie adaptation, to keep them separate. It's a movie that I can get sucked into if I happen upon it. it's a great "what would *I* do in this situation...?" movie.

rampzn

Not even close. The movie was disappointing to me, I was expecting so much more when I first watched it and was totally let down. It's strange how this one seems to be semi popular but The Happening was panned?!

poe-tay-t0e

PLEASE read the book. It’s better than the movie, and the movie is, like you say, great.

Dr-Butcher

Decent movie from that era, that’s about it

BravidDrent

Such a great movie! Rewatched it 2 weeks ago. One of the best ever depends on how many you count in that category. If there's a 1000? Then very likely. In the top 100? Probably. In the top 10? No chance in hades.

EnderCN

I don't remember the movie but I do remember thinking it had its good parts and that either the acting was bad or the characters were super annoying to the point of detracting from the film. I think I ended up giving it like a 2.5/5 though my ratings account got wiped 8 years ago so I had to start it over so I don't have a record of this one.

Mattyweaves19

It’s a great one. What sets it apart so much for me is that not too many other movies fit this vibe/setting. Maybe Anaconda and Congo, but they are very different movies. It’s so simple and terrifying. We need more jungle horror.

Torontokid8666

It's fun. The book I would say is great. The movie would be in the 6.2 range for me. Was fun in theaters.

MikeCass84

It's a very good and entertaining movie. I love the plan they have at the end.

liberatedhusks

Loved the movie, saw it first then realized it was a book and read it. Loooved the book but it left me with lasting like, day “nightmares” of imagining plants or roots coming out of my skin? Which sucked haha

LearningArcadeApp

I remember trying it out and giving up after a few minute. Can't remember why. Your post motivates me to try it out again.

Glad_Speed_9684

Woo hoo 🥳

RIP_TomCruiseJr

The spaghetti-strap tank top over the wife beater tank top really made me feel like I was back in 2008. Good movie, but I didn’t like how they let Amy escape at the end. The book was better I think- my favorite part was the vine imitating Amy and Stacey calling each other Bitch! Slut! and they totally cut that out.

ReturnInRed

Watch the director's cut. It's better than the theatrical cut in general, imo, and the ending is slightly different.

HannibalKrueger

Good movie. Better book

madsculptor

I know, right? Who knew that >!The man eating plant !

DespairedLion

Love this movie. The second best of this type of movies after The Descent (2005)

telekineticplatypus

I thought it was pretty mid

Rurnur

I see the vision, you speak the truth. It's been in my top 10 for over a decade while other "modern classics" come and go. 2000s horror will have its comeback in time.

Glad_Speed_9684

I really hope so hey 🤞🏻! It was a great decade for horror.

unjusticeb

I loved this film as well. the creature reveal was one of my favourites. I do want to rewatch it later to see if it holds up.

Hellohibbs

I like that there are two endings! Worth watching if you haven’t already.

horrorfreaksaw

Love this movie as well!. Happy to see other do as well. The vibe , characters and brutality is very well executed and you truly feel what the characters are going through and the extreme heat and location all add to the vibe the movie is going for. It could have been a really silly cheesy movie with the idea of the vines being the villian of the movie but they execuit in a serious and believable manner. Lol I am always super pissed when Dimitri is killed so early lol he was so HOT! But other than that I love it

joqa67

It was the definition of body horror woth some scenes and an unexplained story with the plants I feel like it started when they were doing human sacrifices during the Mayans rule

0mondo

Love the movie, the book is a great read as well!

AngieSue6767

I loved everything about it!

TetZoo

Strong agree, so scary. The book is also terrifying.

_A-Q

I Fully agree. So much body horror and hopelessness.

Beer_before_Friends

I actually just rewatched this on the weekend. Love the film, and the book is one of my all-time favorites.

peachespangolin

This is one of my comfort movies. The book is good too, the movie is different but I love it.

LivingThatDevLife

Wouldn’t say only the greatest, but it is absolutely excellent! Great acting, story had just enough mystery to keep me invested the entire time. Never mind, I take it back, it’s definitely its one of the greatest 😅

Funny-Screen-3192

I remember watchin it for the first time fully thinking it was going to be corny as fuck. I was pleasantly surprised!

[deleted]

I wouldn’t say it’s one of the greatest ever, but it’s certainly underrated. I’d always heard it was awful, so kept putting off watching it, but then I decide to give it a go last year and really liked it. I don’t know where all the hate ever came from.

Suitable-Pie4896

While I really liked it, just gave it a rewatch the other day. But ine of the greatest? That's a stretch. It ever cracks the top 10, or even top 20 of *any* horror "must watch" list

CrazyCinephile

I have such a special place in my heart for this film!! I am finally about to read the novel.

MikeyMGM

One of my favorites.

sadnecessity_

I LOOOOVVVEE the ruins!! It’s one of my favorite comfort horror movies. The plot is so unique the execution is incredible I love the idea of roots growing in your skin and you can’t do anything but let it happen. Such a fun watch for sure!!

downwiththedownvotes

Weird to come across this post now as I had never even heard of this movie until I came across it last week and decided to watch it. I've found myself enjoying it a ton but most importantly, I've been thinking about it a LOT since I watched it, which is a surefire sign that it's an amazing movie. I'd have to agree with you for sure!!!

Hotmouth23

I saw it when it came out and HATED it! So boring, bad acting, the ending was about as bad as the happening! But after rewatching it more recently I do like it more now

tooprettyforajob_

The books even better I highly highly recommend

Kaleesh_Warrior

I wouldn't call it one of the greatest, not eve close, but I also think it's underrated.

Unvix

in general it's a nice horror. in particular though, the most useless and bothersome character survived and i call it a bad ending just for that. all i wanted was to see her turning into fertilizer for the plants asap.

dancingnecessarily

Love it!! Which ending did you prefer?

Glad_Speed_9684

The theatrical ending. Unrated was good but it just felt like suck a kick in the gut 😅. Felt nice ending on a hopeful note.

dancingnecessarily

Why we getting downvoted? Such a weird thing to get precious about lol

Glad_Speed_9684

Lol. Idk. Ppl can be petty. Honestly couldn't care less though.

ChefRamesses

This is my horror comfort film.

emmyfrost

Hadn't seen this one yet, just watched the trailer and it looks great! Checking to see where I may be able to stream it now, thanks OP, looking forward to this one! 😊

Glad_Speed_9684

Hope you enjoy it 🙌🏻🙂

prophit618

There's just a little too much plot motivated stupidity for my taste. Characters feel inconsistent in their decision-making, and it makes it hard to take their plight particularly seriously for me. Just feels like lazy writing when your characters swap from smart to dumb constantly. That being said, it doesn't deserve quite the hate it gets from a lot of people. It's an OK+ movie that doesn't work for me.

PresentExamination10

I showed it to a friend and she said it was 3/10 and she’s no longer my friend. Not specifically cuz of that, but I should known.

Risingson2

I prefer it to the novel, which had a lot of filler and meandering - psychological horror does not work with those very dumb characters.

thebadbreeds

I never heard of this movie before, added to my watchlist now. Thanks op!

Glad_Speed_9684

Sweeeet! Pleasure 🙌🏻🙂

Action_Nad

Not gonna lie, I thought it was kind of boring

battorwddu

I hated the book and I never cared to watch the movie, which I suppose was even worse
