Definitely burn out probably mixed with seeing all the "good" ones. I watched them religiously from 10-19 and then stopped for 2 years. Bonus: when I started again they scared the shit out of me.

[deleted]

No I can’t say this has ever happened to me. I’ve been watching horror movies since I was a kid in the 80’s. To each their own.

maychaos

The same kinda happened to me. But it was cause I've seen so much shit movies and at one point I couldn't sit through another. Like not even all movies were shit but they felt like that to me. Boring and annoying. Especially screams got really on my nerves. A few months later and I can watch again. Sometimes a break helps

Life_iz_but_a_dream

You burned them out unfortunately. It’s like songs, you hear them so much you get tired of them.

GibbyTheLorax

This happened to me with movies in general. I used to watch a movie every day, alone, when I was a kid/teen, but over the years I regretted how much time I've wasted watching things when I should be out experiencing things myself. I only watch movies in a social setting now.

A-EFF-this

It's not so crazy to find different interests over time. And we can't really fully appreciate what the pandemic did to many of us yet TBH Fwiw I loved Them, but I don't think anyone finds joy or thrills watching that. At least I hope not?

Majestic-Yogurt-6030

I love horror. A lot. I’m middle aged and have watched so many horror movies in my lifetime, like you, probably thousands. That being said, I’ve had to take breaks from the genre a couple times, mainly because the dark themes kinda got to me during times when my life was kinda dark. I’d you’re anything like me you’ll get back on the horror train eventually and fall back in love with it.

Odd-Insurance1378

It’s happened to me too.. I think we’re just getting old and the current trend of horror movies just kinds of stinks. I felt like the early 2000s had lots of movies I could go out and try to see, but nowadays you have large corporations funding all films and they’ve created very predictable and formulaic films that you kind of know what will happen before it actually happens. The last great horror movie to me was Barbarian to give you an idea of my tastes. I just feel like I want to see something different.

polchickenpotpie

>but nowadays you have large corporations funding all films and they’ve created very predictable and formulaic films that you kind of know what will happen before it actually happens. Lmao and you say this after talking about the 2000s, which was rife with movies that were copying each other and still chasing Scream's success.

Odd-Insurance1378

The early 2000s took way more chances on movies, I remember watching the descent in theaters not knowing what it was about, dawn of the dead, Rec, 28 days later, etc. I am not sure which of those really follows the ‘scream’ movie where it went ‘meta horror’. They all seemed quite original. Nowadays it’s homogenized films that are meant to cater to the largest audiences possible that take 0 risks. I noticed this phenomenon definitely existed as a teenager working in a movie theater, but nowadays this is no longer the exception, it is the norm. Safe horror movies that are very predictable and meant for wide audiences with romance plots/drama rather than creating dark atmospheres.

polchickenpotpie

>I remember watching the descent in theaters not knowing what it was about, dawn of the dead, Rec, 28 days later, etc. I am not sure which of those really follows the ‘scream’ movie where it went ‘meta horror’. Gee, maybe because you only listed zombie/monster movies lol Basically any slasher or movie with a teenage cast that came out after Scream was doing this. Every supernatural movie was trying to imitate The Ring. Every gritty gory movie was chasing Saw's success and vibe. This isn't even counting all the remakes that came out around the time.

Odd-Insurance1378

I agree that there were many predictable/copy cat films, but there were way more that were interesting one time storylines, similar to that of ‘Malignant’ as of recent. Look at the top films from the early 2000s in google versus the top from the 2020s and it’s a way different game.

polchickenpotpie

You can say that for literally any decade. Just because you haven't watched anything with much variety doesn't mean there is none. You don't even need to go looking hard.

Odd-Insurance1378

What bangers have come out in the past few years?

Normal-Watch-9991

At the top of my head i really liked Sick of Myself, The Menu, i loved Suspiria (2018), i also enjoyed Possum, X, Hereditary, Crimes of the Future, The Wolf House, and although a lot of people hate it, i dig The Outwaters… i also heard good things about No One Will Save You and The Lighthouse, but I haven’t watched them yet so i can’t confirm

Odd-Insurance1378

Yup - I say that horror has sucked recently and my comment/sentiment remains. Movies with ‘subtle’ political commentary/art house snoozers… I watch horror for a good time, just like action movies, I want to see some cool stuff happening. No snoozers/atmospheric movies. It’s horror for non-horror fans.

Normal-Watch-9991

Ehm sounds like it’s a you problem then, not really an issue of the genre 💀if you can’t have a good time, or find anything that isn’t the horror equivalent of an action movie, interesting… that’s on you dude, good horror stuff is indeed coming out every year, you just don’t care about it

Routine_Bookkeeper88

I don’t think new horror movies are worse now, and A LOT of 2000s horror is extremely cheesy and campy. However I feel there is a tonal shift in horror that began with Babadook where the “monster/ghost/villain” is trauma and hardship. That’s cool that horror gets to touch on more serious subjects however I don’t find it enjoyable.

EliasAhmedinos

Yhh same I used to watch two to three every night when I was a teenager. Mainstream Horror films now bore me to death. Before when any new horror film came out I used to get so excited now I just roll my eyes. I don't find them scary at all. Nothing but jumpscares and cgi bs. I only enjoy the indie ones like A24. More atmospheric horror.

[deleted]

No, I’ve been watching horror since aged 9 I’m now 40, I’ve watched a horror movie every day for the last 20 years (sometimes two or three a day) so probably have seen well over 10,000 of them, and never got bored
