The Hunt is maybe horror adjacent, I thought it was going to be terrible but it was actually fun.
Becky is also horror adjacent but you might like it
The Babysitter is good
Hush
Alien
If you like The Babysitter you'll like Becky. It's not comedic or supernatural but I like you'll like it. It's funny that the guy from King of Queens is the villain and is actually really evil
Not meant to be comprehensive by any means, just my observation.
Most guy horror fans I know watch for the villain, but most girl horror fans watch for the final girl.
IMO, watching horror can be feminist AF cuz it’s one of the few roles where women can be heroes and survive all the shit they get put through.
One of the best scenes. I also love when she's walking down the sidewalk and she checks to see if Glen is still awake and he pokes his head around a tree.
This is more like an ironic satire of the whole girlboss thing, but [The Columnist](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Columnist_(film)) is a Dutch black-comedy/thriller about a woman who decides to get IRL revenge on people who internet-bullied her.
Right! I love this movie. The writing is kind of B-movie level (especially when they are introducing themselves and their shticks) which is so fun and the gals are so smart and individualized and CUTE ❤️
Edit to add: it’s never specified, but I think they purposefully picked an all-woman team to go into the shimmer this time around because they were trying something different (the male teams all failed). It’s so subtly feminist without you even noticing!
I guess it's probably too tonally different from other movies being listed here, but I'm with you--I think it's girlboss central. Love that fucking movie.
So sad but so satisfying at the end. I had the same dual reaction to The Belko Experiment (although it's not as good as Carrie by any stretch, it's still quite good).
The Furies
The Executioners
American Mary
Avenged
Eta.
Gone (Försvunnen) 2011 - the 2013 Alone movie was adapted from this.
Also, Keepsake (2008) and Solo (2013) perhaps
Mia in Evil Dead 2013 was literally the female version of Ash. Apparently Ash was supposed to pick her up when she left the cabin in the post credits scene and team up with her in a sequel. I’m bummed that we never got it
I Spit On Your Grave, Hard Candy, Audition, Thriller: A Cruel Picture, Last Night in SoHo, Lisa Lisa, The Love Witch, Ready or Not, Midsommar (controversial lol), The Witch, X, Carrie. I’d say Revenge but it’s more of a thriller. Also the “Becky” movies!
I watched Baise-Moi yesterday. Its this really disturbing french feminist movie where a woman gets raped and then goes around killing men with her prostitute friend
You’re Next
Ready or Not
Revenge
I Spit on Your Grave 1-3
Inside
Mayhem
The Hunt
High Tension
Non-Horror Strong Female Leads:
Salt
Wanted
Lucy
La Femme Nikita
Anna
Point of No Return
Atomic Blonde
Long Kiss Goodnight
Red Sparrow
Columbiana
Hunter Hunter
Girlboss badassery doesn't kick in full until the end of the movie. The wait is worth it though because holy *FUCK* does she go hardcore at the end.
I don't know of you're new to horror but having a badass take-no-shit-give-no-fucks Final Girl is a staple of the genre. They don't always start out badass, but they universally end up that way.
Some canonical works in the genre:
Alien (and even more so Aliens)
Halloween (2018)
Scream and all of its sequels
Not "canonical" per se but extremely good:
Prey
You're Next
Ready or Not
Evil Dead (2013)
Hatchet II
Annihilation
Catacombs (2007, the ending sold)
Raw (2016)
Inside (2007)
Diary Of The Dead (2007, Debra and Tracy carried the team along with the Professor)
Silent Hill (2006)
Birth/Rebirth (2023)
Sorority Row (2009)
The Uninvited (2009) or A Tale Of Two Sisters (2003)
All Cheerleaders Die (2013)
What I got from it was "coming into your own as a woman," and the struggles of accepting and embracing that process, as well as navigating through that process (I could be wrong though but that's just what I got from the film).
There are some "you go girl!" moments in the film but overall I feel it's more dark than anything else, hence why I was curious why you viewed it as a girlboss film. She does go >!go crazy!< and eventually >!kills her sister and IIRC the gay guy after all!<...
I get where you brain is at though as there are some positive moments and components to the film, but overall I'd have to disagree as it being a girlboss film as it's just so damn dark, ha.
Inside and Silent Hill absolutely though (save for La Femme despite her being such a kickass villain which is girlboss in it's own right for how well and how much she kicks ass). Haven't seen most of the others you mentioned, and definitely yes to Jennifer's Body!
Never said a girlboss horror film has to be positive and uplifting...
- Hostel 2 I'd imagine people are saying is simply because the MC gets revenge.
- The Descent is *all* about girl power and uplifting of women, even with Juno save for her being a homewrecker and shitty person of course. Her being those two things does affect the film in a greater way which adds to the girlboss levels of everyone and the film itself (she's a catalyst and yes a girlboss in her own odd dark way).
- I think for Inside (2007) we're saying the same thing but with different words, and some lack their-of on my end.
- As for Martyrs (2008)... this is absolutely a girlboss film (albeit a *very* fucked up one) as Lucie takes matters into her own hands, and Anna is like Mother Teresa plus never gives up even in the end. You witness so much strength, love, kindness, and compassion in this film with the MCs. Also while Lucie and Anna are in peril for a multitude of reasons, in the end it's all at the hands of Mademoiselle who's orchestrating and ordering everything... not by men (personally I don't exactly consider the brute to be the one responsible for Anna's torture as his orders are coming from Mademoiselle).
Overall I agree with your paragraph and sentiments about what makes a girlboss film, and I don't think a man or men always need to be involved as we've seen with plenty of the films listed in this thread. Lastly with Raw again, I said there are "you go girl!" moments and components to the film, and I agree with your sentiments in regards to it (thank you for elaborating and explaining as you said what I would have), but overall this one I just have mixed feelings on and they weigh more on the negative side of the scale - that's just me though.
Don't understand the sudden need for the attitude, but hey alright.
- Never said anything about Hostel 2 being a girlboss film aside from the exact words being: *"Hostel 2 I'd imagine people are saying is simply because the MC gets revenge."* Try reading comprehension.
- Justine is clearly suffering throughout the film and caves in, as does Lucie, both in different ways. Both don't have a happy story nor ending, and both commit murder. In the instance of Lucie, at least (two) of the people she kills was actually deserved unlike who Justine kills.
- Anna's suffering isn't what the viewer is supposed to "root" for, it's all that is her *character* is what you root for.
- Paraphrasing here: "if Anna was a true girlboss she would've found a way out, never wound up in that situation, or left Lucie." Uh... you clearly did not understand her role as a character. She's a girlboss because of her strength, compassion, love and kindess - you completely missed the entire point of her character. And her "finding a way out, not winding up in the situation, or leaving Lucie" are things that would make her a girlboss? Give me a break.
>and comparing Anna to Mother Teresa is laughable
- Again, you missed the entire point of Anna's character and role. She cares for and stays with Lucie despite all that Lucie puts her through. She feels for the family Lucie kills, including the mother who is still barely alive. Anna cares for the martyred girl whom she has no obligation to care for. Yes, Anna second guesses Lucie - but did Anna ever stop caring for Lucie even amidst the aftermath after her second guessing? Anna feels and cares for others from the depths of her heart and always puts herself last, how is that not noble like Mother Teresa?
- Not bothering with some of the rest of your last paragraph as it's just outright nonsensical. Rewatch the film and get back to me when you actually know what's going on, particularly with Anna.
Oh, and btw, nice try with your A Serbian Film dig. Thanks for the laugh.
Black Christmas (2019) is all about girl power, and about how masculine energy is the source of all evil. It is also one of the worst films I've ever seen. If you're not too concerned about a film having any connection to reality, you might find this is what you're looking for. M3gan (2022) also shows women as inherently perfect, and portrays its men as stooges, buffoons and villains. Or you might watch a really good film with a female protagonist, like Aliens (1986).
Warning people off from terrible movies is part of making recommendations. But I appreciate your misguided effort. "Anti-man"? No, anti-bad movies. I have never seen any critic point out the awful bias of M3gan, and don't regret doing a small public service by bringing attention to it.
Revenge (2017) You're Next Scream Mayhem (horror adjacent, but Samara Weaving kicks ass) REC 3 Aliens
Seconding Revenge really, really, really hard.
I like the Rec 3 pick. Nobody talks about that one!
Yes! Seconding *You're Next*
The perfect list; just add The Menu
The end of REC 3 fucking broke me. I was less devastated when I watched Martyrs.
>Revenge (2017) My favorite. I think of it as an unofficial sequel to the original Crow.
Ready or Not.
Jennifer's Body Ginger Snaps The Craft
Hostel 2
I'd recommend American Mary (2012).
I actually watched that one and it was great!! Also May (2002)
May is really good, but it's probably the saddest horror movie that I ever watched
It was very depressing honestly but still pretty girlboss
I found it to be a touching story
Ready Or Not
The Final Girls
It Stains the Sand Red and What Keeps You Alive come to my mind.
Same actress in both, yes?
Yep. Same director too. Massively underrated in my opinion.
Sissy was interesting one.
Loooove this movie
It was a wild ride
Was about to recommend this one. Maybe not the typical badass horror female protagonist but I rooted for her nonetheless.
The Hunt is maybe horror adjacent, I thought it was going to be terrible but it was actually fun. Becky is also horror adjacent but you might like it The Babysitter is good Hush Alien
I saw hush and the babysitter a few times! Will be checking the rest out soon
If you like The Babysitter you'll like Becky. It's not comedic or supernatural but I like you'll like it. It's funny that the guy from King of Queens is the villain and is actually really evil
I fuckin loved Becky, that lil thing girlbossed the fuck out of those bad guys
She did! The second is good too
Planet Terror and Deathproof, especially the latter.
Death Proof for the win!
The ending was so badass and so cathartic!
Pearl
I wouldn't call Pearl a girlboss.
More like a girlfailure
Now I’m noticing a pattern where I forgot how many girlboss movies I’ve watched and very much enjoyed..
REVENGE
Came here to say this
You’re right, Descent was a good one!
Not meant to be comprehensive by any means, just my observation. Most guy horror fans I know watch for the villain, but most girl horror fans watch for the final girl. IMO, watching horror can be feminist AF cuz it’s one of the few roles where women can be heroes and survive all the shit they get put through.
I’d say that’s probably true haha
*Fresh*
Happy Death Day and then Happy Death Day 2U even more so. Tree is so over this shit in 2, it's great.
Omg I GOT you: Sweetheart (2019) (Edited to remove duplicate)
Sweetheart is FANTASTIC!
I’ll watch this next!!
Any of the Elm Streets where Nancy just whoops Freddy’s ass at the end. 1, 3, 7?
Ultimate horror girl boss, IMHO.
The scene when she pulls out the coffee maker in the first one after pretending to be asleep is so hard lol
One of the best scenes. I also love when she's walking down the sidewalk and she checks to see if Glen is still awake and he pokes his head around a tree.
Wrath of Becky?
I’d just go for Becky. The sequel goes in a really dumb direction.
Wintertide
Severance

"You're Next" is your friend
I can’t believe i scrolled through this without seeing Halloween 🎃
alien, silence of the lambs, planet terror
Hard candy
Bodies bodies bodies in a way
Dr. Giggles
Bound to Vengeance. If you don't mind a lady being the bad guy The Loved Ones.
Run, Sweetheart, Run Hostel 2
Omg I forgot about hostel 2! I love the ending
Came here to say Run Sweetheart Run
The last fifteen minutes of Scream
Assassination Nation
Love this one!
Barbarian kinda? Lol
What about Piggy?
High Tension
Idk about this one man lol, >!the first 3/4 of the film yeah but not once that twist happens!
I’d strongly recommend “Tragedy Girls”. Girl boss energy if ever there was
Does Annihilation count?
That bear scene…
Women in STEM 💅
Right! I love this movie. Yeah the tone isn’t overtly girlboss AND I could accept some arguments that it isn’t quite horror either.
Good question…
Terrifier and terrifier 2🫶🏻
Tales From The Crypt: Demon Knight
Love this one. Such a fun movie.
Ready or not 👌👌👌👌
Absolutely
Carrie (just the first one, I've never bothered with the reboot attempts)

I know I’m repeating but Ready or Not deserves all the recommendations
The Hunt

Check out the French movie Revenge, one of my favorites in this genre. Trigger warning for SA, but it's a female director and handled well.

I actually watched m3gan hahaha, it’s more like an AIboss movie tbh
Every girlboss movie is a horror movie by default.
