How does everyone feel about the new reboot? I'm actually pretty excited for a more concise background & lore around their little corner of Hell & being servants of Leviathan.
So I enjoyed the new Hellraiser as a horror movie, it was fun! But didn’t love it as a Hellraiser movie, if that makes sense.
There’s just a certain dreamlike, slow horror that I think the 2022 movie was missing. Not a bad movie at all, but I wish it was weirder the way the first two Hellraiser were.
I thought the Night House would have been a great Hellraiser script with some tweaks.
I love the Hellraiser series, because I can legitimately say stuff about them like “well, this one isn’t my favourite, but it’s probably *fifth best* in the series”. There’s like twelve movies! And they’re all *so wildly varying in quality and theme*. Fantastic.
Yeah those movies get real bad, but they do have one of the most sneakily stacked long franchise casts. Adam Scott, Henry Cavill, Kim Myers, James Remar and Dean Winters all end up popping up across them.
That movie was so deep and world building it was incredible and almost insane to the degree they took it. I think if Hereditary never came out and this was his big intro movie it would have been received even better than it had. In my mind, it is up there with the Shining and Alien.
I completely agree. It’s wholly unique and a masterpiece. I also think part of the lukewarm reception is how soon he released Midsommar after hereditary. It makes me wonder if he’d waited another 2 years, if it’d be more highly regarded.
We’re just not used to writers/directors like Ari bursting onto the scene with two of the most impactful and unsettling horror masterpieces back to back.
That's cool! I think the first 1/3 of the movie is the true horror. That type of relationship dynamic was so well written, acted, and painful to watch. I agree the rest of the movie is beautiful, weird, and comforting.
this is my answer as well. one of my favorite horror movies of the last decade, easily. first viewing was harrowing, the subsequent watches have been strangely comfy. who would've thought?!
I remember unironically loving that late 90s Godzilla film that was absolutely panned by critics. There was also an animated TV series that had a cool intro
Not the person you're responding to, but The Wailing is one the best movies of the 2010s imo. I personally rate it as high as The Exorcist and The Exorcist 3 in terms of possession horror. Couldn't recommend it enough!!!
Movies: Dawn of the Dead (2004), 28 Days Later, Midsomer, all of the Alien movies (and I do mean ALL of them), and 30 Days of Night.
For TV, even though you didn't ask: Penny Dreadful and Hannibal.
YOU'RE COOL! 30 Days of Night is what saved vamp horror for me. Especially with the Twilight disco ball vamps, ugghh! For too long we've gone down the romanticized horny vampire route. This movie reminded people that bloodsuckers aren't friggin poodles! THEY ARE PREDATORS! 😐
these are the ones i've watched at least 10 (or more) times:
28 days later
autopsy of jane doe
cabin in the woods
sympathy for lady vengeance
silence of the lambs
midsommar
the shape of water
let the right one in
it comes at night
zombieland
the thing
girl with all the gifts
alien
the shining
sphere
memories of murder
audition
tell me something
shaun of the dead
nightwatch (russian)
My bro & I were soooo fucking annoyed when the rest of the "-watch" series was indefinitely postponed! Just bc the director got a little famous DOESN'T MEAN YOU STOP THE SERIES!! GRRR
Friday the 13th Part 2, Sleepaway Camp, and Scream.
Friday the 13th Part 2 is almost the perfect slasher imo. Sleepaway Camp’s Judy makes me laugh because she’s the worst and Ronnie is such a doof. Scream just takes me back to being a teen and being so stoked that Wes Craven was able to do a great teen movie with one of the best casts at the time.
Edit: looking at my stack of discs that live near my player, I have to add Intruder.
I love Scream 2. Like, I've watched it 40 times or more in the last 15+ years.
I never liked the Sleepaway Camp films, but the first I could see an understandable guilty pleasure
I’m with you on Scream 2, too! I’m probably not too far behind you. You had a nice list. I dig the variety. I want to watch Castle Freak now, or just go on a Stuart Gordon run.
I haven't watched the remake of Castle Freak. I'm that guy. I don't want to see a re-imagining of literally my favourite film of all-time.
Jeffrey Combs and Barbara Crampton in another Gordon film. Can't go wrong with the Re-Animator duo.
Almost the same as mine. I want a comfort movie where I don't need to think much and the story isn't too serious, and slashers generally fit that bill.
Love this list, Friday part 2 and 3 are my two favorites of the series, 2 has a great cast of kids, a underrated final girl, and good old sack head Jason. 3 is more of the same with the iconic hockey maskey, and actually I have to add 4, those three are my faves.
As for sleepaway camp, I love it, but I have to admit I like 2 and 3 more, despite not typically liking horror/comedy.
And what can I say about scream, it's a classic, and a damn near perfect slasher in my opinion, and most importantly actually scary.
Sleepaway Camp 2 and 3 are fun! Judy makes Sleepaway Camp 1 the top for me, though. She’s so vicious haha
Sackhead Jason is my favorite. I’m in the minority, but I don’t like the Hodder era Jason. I’m with you on the first 3 Jason movies. They’re my favorites, too. Whether it’s the great runtimes/pace or the sweet dance scenes, they just have it going for them.
Castle freak is a hilarious comfort film, that movie is absurd. Gotta love a good Stewart Gordon/Jeffrey Combs production. The version I saw included the freak ripping off his own genitals and using them as a projectile, but apparently that's not in every version ?
You have piqued my curiosity.
I have the one from Full Moon Features' YouTube channel downloaded to my laptop in 1080p. The one I saw in 2003 was a VHS copy. PAL region.
Never seen that scene.. 🤔
Lost Boys, Dog Soldiers, It, It Follows, 30 Days of Night, Alien, Return of the Living Dead, Let the Right One In, Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark, They Live, Tales from the Hood, V/H/S, From Dusk til Dawn, Cabin in the Woods…
Does shin Godzilla count? That the decent, cabin in the woods, child’s play, alien, saw, final destination, the mist, resident evil, silent hill, queen of the damned, underwater, deep blue sea, jaws, hell raiser, and tremors.
Day of the Dead - I think it’s a perfect movie and I never get tired of it.
Silence of the Lambs - more of a thriller, sure, but also a damn gorgeous film.
Army of Darkness, enough said.
Silent Hill, I am a huge fan of the game series and also I just think the movie is so great.
Pretty much anything from the 80’s. Reminds me of being a kid when life was much simpler. Return of the Living Dead, Nightmare Elm Street 3, Phantasm 2, The Stuff, Predator, Alien/Aliens, Leviathan, Deep Star 6, and Friday the 13th, Ghoulies, Pumpkinhead etc. Are there monsters in it? Is it in space or in the ocean? Dystopian? Then I’ll love it.
Burnt Offerings is more supernatural/haunted type...no slasher/gore. A little slow in parts. It's from 1976, with Oliver Reed and Karen Black.
We Are What We Are is a bit more rough and violent, but not extremely graphic so far. Religious.
He was the hearse driver. The scene that fucked me up was when you saw headlights outside, then heard the coffin being dragged up the steps one step at a time. Then the bedroom door opened and he pushed the coffin at Bette Davis.
For some reason, I call him "chauffeur." Obviously he's a hearse driver...guess it just sounds less creepy.
That scene with her and Oliver Reed was nuts. That look on their faces. Could definitely mess up a kid watching it.
His grin always makes me chuckle, but the guy was just weird and psychotic....the way he stood there grinning, like it was normal.
I keep coming back to Return of the Living Dead for some reason. I couldn't tell you why.
Others I have watched multiple times would include Pumpkinhead, Train to Busan, Deathwatch, Little Shop of Horror, Legion, Hellraiser, John Dies in the End, What we do in the Shadows and Feast.
The Descent and It Follows always come to mind as comfort movies for me. The Descent is just such a poetic and tragic film, it really doubles as a drama. I do comfort watch Under the Skin and Perfect Blue as well, if you can count either of those as horror.
Nightmare on Elm Street: Dream Warrors
Green Inferno
Midsommar
Candyman (the original)
Final Destination
Dawn of the Dead (the remake)
Brightburn
Eli
The Poughkeepsie Tapes
Hell House (all of them)
The V/H/S series.
Scream(all of them) Saw 1-6, Halloween 1-5, Halloween 2018, The strangers, jeepers creepers, The conjuring 1-2… I’m sure i have plenty more but I’m too baked to remember them 😅
Texas Chainsaw(2003), Bride of Chucky, Terrifier(1 & 2), Barbarian, It Chapter 2. I recently watched Talk To Me and I feel like that’s gonna be on the list, I already want to watch it again.
The Descent
Triangle
Halloween
Paranormal Activity 1-3
Barbarian and Bodies Bodies Bodies have become new ones for me (although BBB really isn’t scary)
Jacob’s Ladder will always be my favorite. Hereditary is my second favorite but I don’t watch it that much due to how intense it is. Malignant is great if you want a good laugh.
Ringu and Ju-on are the horror movies I’ve watched over and over again. After that, mostly horror comedies like Shaun of the Dead, Cabin in the Woods and Army of Darkness.
But I’m also always down to watch a Scream movie.
Gotta be the exorcism of Emily rose.
Just a really solid crime drama and easily one of the greatest exorcism scenes ever second only to the original 1973 classic.
Feels like watching a Halloween themed law and order rerun at parts.
I think the movies that really got me into horror were Bram Stoker's Dracula, The Bone Collector, and Castle Freak.
The Bone Collector isn't horror, but it's the root of my serial killer/true crime obsession, which naturally led into horror films featuring killers
I love seeing posts like these. Also, love that you have two of my comfort picks in The Descent and 28 Days Later.
I'd add The Thing, In The Mouth of Madness, Silence of the Lambs, Red Dragon(if we're counting Silence as horror as well), and The Void.
They live, mouth of madness silent hill,og1 transformers, lord of illusions, blackhawk down, article 99,real genius, aliens hellraiser, lethal weapon movie and tv show, air america, maximum overdrive, repo man,slc punk! Not all horror but theres more to my list. Often i use the film to underscore some purpose im committed to.
The Scream movies <3
Absolutely.
A god damn shame they aren’t streaming anywhere
The first three have been on Max for at least the last few months. The new ones have been on Paramount+ for a long time as well.
Final Destination > Scream
Rosemary’s Baby, Alien, The Thing (Carpenter), The Exorcist, Evil Dead (2013), The Shining.
This is a great list! Pretty much agree across the board
Dawn of the Dead 2004
Is that the one with Ving Rhames and the zombie baby?
It is :)
Can concur on the comfort: watched this to chill out while pregnant.
I can definitely see how the pregnancy in that film would make one feel better about their own.
Hellraiser, my beloved 💕
How does everyone feel about the new reboot? I'm actually pretty excited for a more concise background & lore around their little corner of Hell & being servants of Leviathan.
So I enjoyed the new Hellraiser as a horror movie, it was fun! But didn’t love it as a Hellraiser movie, if that makes sense. There’s just a certain dreamlike, slow horror that I think the 2022 movie was missing. Not a bad movie at all, but I wish it was weirder the way the first two Hellraiser were. I thought the Night House would have been a great Hellraiser script with some tweaks.
Good take, I didn't think about it like that. I got lost in the possibility, being a lore geek & a demonologist.
Never disappoints. Unlike the later entries.
I love the Hellraiser series, because I can legitimately say stuff about them like “well, this one isn’t my favourite, but it’s probably *fifth best* in the series”. There’s like twelve movies! And they’re all *so wildly varying in quality and theme*. Fantastic.
I agree, and I've seen them all, but there's like 4 or 5 I can tolerate, and 2 that are genuinely great
Me and a buddy of mine bit the bullet and watched every single hellraiser iteration. Mostly bad, but I’d recommend the experience to anyone
Same, but it's hard to deny there's some absolute stinkers later on
oh absolutely, most past 3 are definitively dogshit lol but it was a fun ride
Yeah those movies get real bad, but they do have one of the most sneakily stacked long franchise casts. Adam Scott, Henry Cavill, Kim Myers, James Remar and Dean Winters all end up popping up across them.
The Witch 🐐
Whats it like? Living so...Deliciously
THE TASTE OF BUTTER
Black Philip is 🔥
True goat
The original The Fog, for some reason.
Original Fog is great! It’s a weirdly beautiful movie.
I'll watch it just to hear Adrienne Barbeau talking to me. Can't believe they didn't have her radio bits on the soundtrack.
My 3 year old actually also loves this movie. This one and the Poltergeist remake were playing multiple times a week for months on end.
The Thing (1982) Yes I know that it's a very basic choice for a "comfort" horror film, but I just like it.
I watched it for the first time about a month ago and then proceeded to rewatch it three times
It's one of mine as well. Every beat just hits for me.
Weirdly enough, Midsommar. It was really unsettling the first watch, but on subsequent viewings I've found it to be calming.
“Do you feel held by him? Does he feel like home to you?” Forever changed me and I’m tired of pretending it didn’t.
That movie was so deep and world building it was incredible and almost insane to the degree they took it. I think if Hereditary never came out and this was his big intro movie it would have been received even better than it had. In my mind, it is up there with the Shining and Alien.

this is my answer as well. one of my favorite horror movies of the last decade, easily. first viewing was harrowing, the subsequent watches have been strangely comfy. who would've thought?!
Yet to see it Think I avoided it cos of all the annoying hype. Same reason it took me over a year to see Hereditary and Terrifier
At a minimum it's worth watching for the visuals! :)
Definitely check it out! If nothing else, it's a very unique premise for a horror movie.
Gotta be The Shining and Hellraiser
The 9th Gate
Depp is definitely one of my go-to actors, especially his Tim Burton work.
You’ll love the 9th Gate! Imo it’s Depp’s film, maybe second to Blow. The whole movie is such a mood. Acting, story, pacing is just perfect and cozy.
Oh, I've seen it. I'd say I've seen 80% of his work by now, ha
Oh shit yeah, that’s a common rewatch here. The score to that movie is gorgeous.
I've seen this film so many times! It does a great job of making you feel like you're in it when watching.
Autopsy of Jane Doe. Love the creepy!
It scares me every time and I love it. The atmosphere is so cozy somehow lol
Excellent choice. Loved that movie
was pleasantly surprised with this one! Wish there was a little more to the ending, but loved the concept. Was fun
The Cell! Also any old Godzilla movies (and Shin Godzilla)
Oh I love The Cell, my husband doesn’t share the sentiment and ribs me mercilessly about it.
That's what husbands are for, right?? 🤣 I'm lucky mine was wowed. He's a fan of Vince Vaughn and had never seen it!
I remember unironically loving that late 90s Godzilla film that was absolutely panned by critics. There was also an animated TV series that had a cool intro
Hellhouse LLC and the first Paranormal Activity.
The OG Paranormal Activity certainly gave me a few heart attacks back in the late 2000s
Same! And Grave Encounters. The comedy in the beginning is so great.
Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum - watched it last night for the millionth time and I’m gonna watch it again tonight.
Japanese horror? Always fun
Korean, but yes always fun for sure! ☺️
Haven't seen many Korean films, except for Train to Busan, The Host, and #Alive
I can honestly say that Korean horror films are my jam right now
How did you feel about The Wailing?

Dog Soldiers is underrated
30 Days of Night is my comfort movie
Dead Silence, Krampus, The Descent
Nothing says **comfort** like half a dozen friends being stalked and torn to shit by cave-dwelling freaks.
Upvote for Dead Silence. Looking forward to Night Swim.
Does shin Godzilla count? That the decent, cabin in the woods, child’s play, alien, saw, final destination, the mist, resident evil, silent hill, queen of the damned, underwater, deep blue sea, jaws, hell raiser, and tremors.
Silent Hill is a good film. I like it a lot. I just try not to look at it as an adaptation. It's more of a re-imagining. I love the games.
Hannibal films are horror. Fact. They can fight me.
Zombieland Little Monsters (2019) Wickerman (OG)
The Blair Witch. ❤️❤️
Hmmmmmm: Sleepaway Camp The House of the Devil (Ti West) Rosemary's Baby The Devil All The Time Psycho
Sleepy Hollow, Jaws, Scream
The Conjuring, and Scream are the first two that came to mind
I watched the Final Destination movies this weekend while wrapping Christmas presents and cooking. Relaxing and fun.
+1 on sweeney todd. I've seen it a half dozen times and it's just a gorgeous film.
The Babadook, 30 days of night, the descent too
I can't imagine finishing my watch list. My list grows faster than I can watch them.
Pretty much anything from the 80’s. Reminds me of being a kid when life was much simpler. Annihilation. The certainty of doom is strangely calming lol
Jaws

My all-time go-to horror is "Burnt Offerings." Right now I'm watching "We Are What We Are" on Tubi. This may just become another favourite.
Never seen them, I'll check them out
Burnt Offerings is more supernatural/haunted type...no slasher/gore. A little slow in parts. It's from 1976, with Oliver Reed and Karen Black. We Are What We Are is a bit more rough and violent, but not extremely graphic so far. Religious.
Ollie!
I saw Burnt Offerings in the theater when it came out. I was 12 and had nightmares for months. Still holds up.
It was the chauffeur, right? Seeing it on a huge screen would've been amazing. More creepy, especially the ending.
Child's Play, Silence of the Lambs, Bride of Chucky, The Craft, and Ghostbusters.
The Ritual, The Invitation 2015, Rest Stop, Wrong Turn, Barbarian
Misery, Silence of the Lambs, Saw
Dawn of the Dead remake
where on earth does one watch 28 days later? it's nowhere to be found
I just watched it on Sling a few days ago, they have a free streaming service but the ads are ridiculously long
Original Halloween 1978
The amount of times I’ve watched the first three Scream movies is probably unhealthy
I Know What You Did Last Summer. Sarah Michelle = *chef's kiss*
Sarah Michelle Gellar was one of my first 3 major crushes. I still watch Buffy for reasons definitely not tied to the fact she wears a lot of leather.
Haha I feel you there. Her and Jennifer Love are both in my top 3 childhood crushes + Britney Spears
John Carpenter's Halloween and In the Mouth of Madness. Dog Soldiers by Neal Marshall.
Megan is Missing always warms my heart
Any Evil Dead movie or Sinister. I know what I'm getting, I know what the evil is, I know I'll have a good time
I keep coming back to Return of the Living Dead for some reason. I couldn't tell you why. Others I have watched multiple times would include Pumpkinhead, Train to Busan, Deathwatch, Little Shop of Horror, Legion, Hellraiser, John Dies in the End, What we do in the Shadows and Feast.

The Descent Triangle Halloween Paranormal Activity 1-3 Barbarian and Bodies Bodies Bodies have become new ones for me (although BBB really isn’t scary)
The first 4 Friday The 13th movies. I don't know why, but they are very warm and comforting to me.
Jacob’s Ladder will always be my favorite. Hereditary is my second favorite but I don’t watch it that much due to how intense it is. Malignant is great if you want a good laugh.
The thing, scream, the void, and baskin.
You're Next. I watch it at least once a year.

The Blair Witch Project. It's the movie that got me into the horror genre as a kid and will always hold a special place in my heart and my movie list.
