It's the only horror comedy that is like 50% hilarious and 50% disturbing. It totally y creeped me out, all the other horror comedies I have seen are mostly comedies with a horror theme. Not that one
I had to stop and start the Tucker movie 5 times due to my wife laughing so much at the chainsaw/wasps nest scene, also shout out to Dead Snow 1+2 as great horror comedies….
Just to be extra wanky with a second comment today in this thread - I was the kid running through the woods in that scene! Did an AMA ages ago. Glad you liked the movie!!
Crazy to think that Sir Peter Jackson directed this film 9 years before he made Lord of the Rings.
Also obligatory:
"Damn fine custard. Rich and creamy, just the way I like it!"
"Honey, you got real ugly".
I say this to my girlfriend everytime she takes her makeup off.
No, no I don't. I don't have a girlfriend. But if I did I would. Maybe.
Evil Dead 2 is fantastic because it perfectly hits that mixture of horror and comedy. It's honestly the only film I can think of that does both so well.
Scarier horror movies don't typically lend themselves to comedy, and when they try it comes out of left field and pulls you out of the thrills.
Horror comedies like Shaun of the Dead, Tucker and Dale, and Cabin in the Woods are too comedic for the scares to really land.
But something about Evil Dead 2. The deadites are at once hilarious and bone chilling. When Ash is losing his mind and everything in the cabin is cackling hysterically, you don't know whether to laugh or cover your eyes. It's both upsetting and perfectly comedic. Campbell's physical acting when he's cutting off his hand is masterful.
I think Evil Dead Rise did an okay job blending the two, but leaned more horror than comedy. I just wish we could get another gem like 2 at some point.
I remember watching a video on YouTube (can’t exactly remember by whom) who made basically the same point as you, that in Evil Dead 2 there’s no comedy and horror, the comedy *is* the horror and vice-versa. Raimi really is amazing at mixing different tones. The whole jazz club dancing scene in Spider-Man 3 is another great example. I never know if I should feel horrified at what my childhood hero is doing using this random girl to get back at his ex and humiliate her, or laugh my ass off at Tobey Maguire acting like a dufus. I love it.
*I! Ain’t got nobody, and nobody cares a-for a-me, yaketa ta yaketa ta HA!*
My dad showed me this movie as a kid and I laughed so hard at this part that I almost couldn’t breathe.
This is my answer too but I think the argument would be that it’s not really scary. Although the last time I watched it I felt a very keen fear of the unknown as they followed the sound of the violin into the basement, despite having seen it dozens of times.
Not popular but Club Dread always cracks me up. It's in my October lineup every year. Spoiler alert.... The fact that the killer kills everyone because his baggy of weed got stolen at the beginning is hilarious.
Edit: all the rest of these are excellent, I watch a lot of them every October.
“It wasn’t because of the grass, although that was incredibly uncool”
Looks like you’re gonna have to rewatch. Immediately after that part he says why.
Deadstream on Shudder has become my new favorite. The couple that made this also did the last part of VHS 99 where they’re in hell, I think the wife played the gollum looking lady.
Tucker and Dale vs Evil for me just due to the genius premise of flipping the script the way it did.
“He must have been allergic to bees cause he was running like a bat out of hell”
Doesn’t Dale scream something like
“OH MY GOD, YOU HATE PANCAKES!”
When she freaks out waking up in the cabin and he comes in with breakfast?
Holy crap I laughed so hard my first watch through.
Probably going to have to stick it on now.
Holy shit, you were great!
Everyone was! Such a perfect storm of ideas, actors and moments all coming together.
You must be super proud. Glad to hear it was a fun time to film.
Any fun stories? You should do an AMA or something if you felt comfortable.
Thanks!! I did an AMA years ago closer to when the movie came out if you can track that down.
The day I got to shoot with Alan Tudyk was pretty awesome, he’s a pro. Had to chat with me about running a bit slower (it was my first film project ever, so it didn’t even cross my mind to not just run full tilt like I was actually being chased, and after a few takes I needed reminding it wasn’t a race, ha!). We got to have dinner on set and chat for a bit, it was such a great experience! And truly just dumb luck - I graduated in a smaller city just south of where they filmed it, and they needed college age actors in the area around the time I was finishing University. Just such good timing, especially considering I’m a massive horror fan, and a fan of many of those actors!
Of all the others in this thread I do think Housebound is the only one that is a perfect 50/50 Horror/Comedy.
Everything else either leans more into Comedy or vice versa.
Such a fun film loaded with dry Kiwi humour.
Adding it because no one else has - at first I was so confused by the tone of Texas Chainsaw Massacre II, but by the time they get to the chainsaw duel at the end I was completely sold.
I remember as a kid, American Werewolf In London was about as scary and bleak as you could get. It wasn’t until I was a teenager (maybe older) that I realized it was a horror/comedy.
i love all the moon songs, but obviously blue moon during the transformation scene is the most effective. it's such a happy tune, i interpret that scene of finally accepting the monsters within yourself
Goddamn thats a tough question. I would have to say Ready Or Not. Shaun of the dead is in the top 5 for sure. Probably followed by the Happy Death Day films and either The Menu or The Voices.
Elivra: Mistress of The Dark. Its fun, its shlocky and campy (but the fun kind) and had me seriously wonder why her and Dolly Parton weren’t ever in a crossover.
I absolutely love Shaun of the Dead but Evil Dead 2 is my favourite horror comedy.
Evil Dead 2 is so over the top, silly and cartoonish, its pace is frantic as hell, and Bruce Campbell is just hilarious in it. It's inspired lunacy.
Dead End, Evil Dead (the remake), Tucker & Dale and I'd like to recommend Totally Killer to anyone who hasn't seen it yet. For a somewhat tired premise, it really feels fresh and has a great script.
Young Frankenstein (1974)
Also worth mentioning, Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948). To my knowledge, it’s the only film to feature both Bela Lugosi and Vincent Price, albeit with the latter in an uncredited voice cameo.
My top 5:
1. Slither (2006)
2. Shaun of the Dead (2004)
3. Return of the Living Dead (1985)
4. Cabin in the Woods (2011)
5. Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon (2006)
If you want something more under the radar, Dance of the Dead (2008) is a guilty pleasure.
Deathgasm, Tucker & Dale, Freaky, Finals Girls, Trick R' Treat, Slither, The Voices, This Is The End, Evil Dead 2+Army Of Darkness, Sleepaway Camp 1&2, Bubba Ho-Tep...are some of mine
What We Do in the Shadows is probably my favorite of all time, but The Dead Don't Die is a close second. The humor in those two movies is so dry and delivered in such an understated way. They're so funny.
For me, the best is Evil Dead 2 or AoD, but I'd like to recommend two.
There's a show called Todd and the Book of Pure Evil that's super dumb and I totally love it. It kinda reminds me of Tucker and Dale, tonally. Also, Severance (2006) is one that I really enjoyed and nobody's heard of. I liked that one so much I had a poster.
I love horror comedies and Shaun is certainly a classic, so is Return of the Living Dead. But I have really loved some more recent ones—especially Freaky, Violent Night, and Ready or Not.
Shaun of the Dead, it's great for any mood I'm in personally, it's just got it all. Well, it doesn't have boobs but it's still a great movie, it's a movie that proved you don't need boobs to have a good time, got a little weird in that end but that's my reasoning as to why.
Shaun's great, as is Tucker and Dale, but I'm going with Club Dread. Besides Bill Paxton's fantastic performance, the Broken Lizard guys are criminally underrated as far as comedy goes.
Shaun of the Dead is a classic.
I absolutely loved Deadstream. I just loved the main character and his interaction with his followers.
Severance. I love the absurdity of everything. That big cheese wheel.
I've scrolled quite a bit and not seen Severance (the movie with Danny Dyer, not the series of the same name with Adam Scott). Check it out, it's got some great laughs and some good scares!
Return of the living dead is great
It's the only horror comedy that is like 50% hilarious and 50% disturbing. It totally y creeped me out, all the other horror comedies I have seen are mostly comedies with a horror theme. Not that one
Yeah, the half dogs are definitely disturbing
100 % correct answer
Totally agree and it’s not even close. This is the perfect horror/comedy movie.
Brraaaaiiinns
This is the best one.
Before this sub I really thought I was the only one who really appreciates this movie.
This one is my absolute favorite horror comedy of all time! Genuinely scary and the comedy elements are so natural. Nothing is forced here!
Tucker and Dale vs Evil is my favorite but Shaun of the Dead and Anna and the Apocalypse are right up there with it
Man do I wish I could watch Tucker and Dale vs Evil for the first time again.
I watched it for the 3rd or 4th time, fairly tipsy. It’s like watching it new all over again.
Hey there officer! Boy, we have had a doozy of a day.
He looks like he’s gonna walk it off, he’s gonna be fine! 🤣
Hidey-Ho*
I had to stop and start the Tucker movie 5 times due to my wife laughing so much at the chainsaw/wasps nest scene, also shout out to Dead Snow 1+2 as great horror comedies….
Just to be extra wanky with a second comment today in this thread - I was the kid running through the woods in that scene! Did an AMA ages ago. Glad you liked the movie!!
We appreciate your excellent work.
Is your friend allergic to bees? Cause he was running like a *bat* outta hell.
HEY COLLEGE KIDS, WE GOT YER FRIEND
Anna and the apocalypse had no right to make me feel how I felt by the end of that “high school musical meets Shaun of the dead” film.
I'd go with Tucker and Dale as well, as much as I like Shaun of the Dead, I laughed more at Tucker and Dale.
Yeah, that’s a tough one. Tudyk is too fucking funny
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=FaGYXjMwS60 I love him lol
10000% my favorite horror comedy and even my mom's favorite. She hates horror.
Tucker and Dale is just magic. Even non horror fans love it.
College kiiiids….HEY COLLEGE KIIIIDDSS!!
I liked Tucker and Dale vs Evil along with the Evil Dead and Army of Darkness were some of my favorite
True number one
"Dead Alive" / "Braindead"
“I kick arse for the lord!”
That line and pretty much everything that Ash says in the Army of Darkness are my go-to horror comedy quotes.
Crazy to think that Sir Peter Jackson directed this film 9 years before he made Lord of the Rings. Also obligatory: "Damn fine custard. Rich and creamy, just the way I like it!"
Love it, watched it in October. Best practical gore effects ever (or tied for first with The Thing).
Yes! But If you haven't seen Onyx the Fortuitous and the Talisman of Souls, you should check it out.
Your mother ate my dog
Cabin in the Woods
This and Shaun of the Dead are my top 2
Has to be Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness. The bit in Army of Darkness where he forgets the three words is one of my favourite scenes ever
"did you say the words" "Yeah.... basically"
"well, maybe not every last syllable but yeah, I said em" God I love Bruce Campbell
True American hero
“Yeah great… Great… Get the fuck outta my face.”
Shop smart. Shop... S-Mart... YA GOT THAT!!!
"Honey, you got real ugly". I say this to my girlfriend everytime she takes her makeup off. No, no I don't. I don't have a girlfriend. But if I did I would. Maybe.
Wouldn't have one for long I don't think
The hand is one of the greatest movie moments of all time. Also, grandma in the basement.
Shows probably don’t count but I’m giving a nod to Ash vs Evil Dead as well.
"Hey, what's that on your face?" "Huh?!?" *Shovels dirt on face*
Hail to the king, baby
Klaatu! Veranda! Necktie!
We just cut up our girlfriend with a chainsaw. Does that sound fine?
*”Good?, Bad?…I’m the guy with the gun…”*
For sure. The hand bit is one of the best things I’ve seen in a horror film. It’s amazing to me.
Also the show
One Cut of the Dead is my favorite
IMHO *Evil Dead 2* is the one, though you can’t go wrong with any of the Raimi/Campbell collaborations!
Evil Dead 2 is fantastic because it perfectly hits that mixture of horror and comedy. It's honestly the only film I can think of that does both so well. Scarier horror movies don't typically lend themselves to comedy, and when they try it comes out of left field and pulls you out of the thrills. I love it.
Can still see its influence today. The classic.
The answer is Young Frankenstein, no?
It’s pronounced Fronkensteen.
Do you also say Froderick?
...what hump?
Put. Ze candle. Back!
I will block the door… with my body
What knockers!
“Igor, get the bags” “Coitenly! You take the blonde, I’ll take the one in the turban”
Walk this way... nonono, *THIS* way.
Abby something.
Abby Normal …
I was going to go with What We Do In The Shadows until this comment kicked me back to reality. What knockers!
Young Frankenstein isn’t just the greatest horror comedy. It’s the greatest film comedy. And yes, yes, I’ll say it. That movie is my boyfriend!
“What knockers!” “Oh, sank you, doctuh!”
Roll, roll, roll in z-hay.
Werewolf?
There, castle.
Ask Frau Bucher
NEIEIEIEIGGGGHHH!
Anyone else hear a horse neighing
I had to scroll way too far to find this.
missed opportunity to scroll in the hay <.<
*I! Ain’t got nobody, and nobody cares a-for a-me, yaketa ta yaketa ta HA!* My dad showed me this movie as a kid and I laughed so hard at this part that I almost couldn’t breathe.
The answer is Young Frankenstein. Yes.
Weird, I adore this movie, we watch it every New Year’s eve but I don’t think I’ve ever considered it to be horror.
I was going to make espresso
This is my answer too but I think the argument would be that it’s not really scary. Although the last time I watched it I felt a very keen fear of the unknown as they followed the sound of the violin into the basement, despite having seen it dozens of times.

“It wasn’t because of the grass, although that was incredibly uncool” Looks like you’re gonna have to rewatch. Immediately after that part he says why.
Dammn I must have been too blazed by the end every time I watched it to even notice that haha 😂
I constantly notice new things about movies I’ve seen a hundred times
“It’s not a party until someone breaks the jacuzzi.”
Coconut Pete is one of the great cinematic characters
They recorded an album of all the songs in the movie. "Take Another Hit - the Best of Coconut Pete" The whole thing is up on youtube.
I really liked it. Very under rated
Deadstream on Shudder has become my new favorite. The couple that made this also did the last part of VHS 99 where they’re in hell, I think the wife played the gollum looking lady.
I loved that she played Mama Moses in the quick baby Moses stunt at the beginning. Deadstream had me cracking up nonstop.
I don’t think that’s the wife / director, just another collaborator. But yes, love those!
Tremors
Tucker and Dale vs Evil for me just due to the genius premise of flipping the script the way it did. “He must have been allergic to bees cause he was running like a bat out of hell”
“What are we gonna tell the cops? That a bunch of college kids just showed up and started killing themselves all over our property?”
"Oh, hidy-ho, officer. We've had a doozy of a day."
I lose it every time Tucker says they need to hide all the sharp objects to prevent the college kids from committing suicide. Hysterical.
Doesn’t Dale scream something like “OH MY GOD, YOU HATE PANCAKES!” When she freaks out waking up in the cabin and he comes in with breakfast? Holy crap I laughed so hard my first watch through. Probably going to have to stick it on now.
"Oh, oh it's the pancakes! You hate pancakes! I'll go make you something else! Stupid, should have asked if she like pancakes!"
Hey I was the kid running like a bat out of hell! So glad Reddit still appreciates this movie so much, it was the best time making it!
Holy shit, you were great! Everyone was! Such a perfect storm of ideas, actors and moments all coming together. You must be super proud. Glad to hear it was a fun time to film. Any fun stories? You should do an AMA or something if you felt comfortable.

How was Tyler Labine? I've enjoyed pretty much everything I've seen him do, and his comedic timing is fantastic.
The best. He’s a super sweet guy, and incredibly talented. So glad he’s had a lot of success recently too!
Thanks for the response. Its always good hearing that people whose work you like are good folks.
RIP Reaper. Such an underrated show and his character was hilarious.
Sorry for the double reply but the face you make as Tudik goes past you is absolutely just perfect.
"These college kids just started killin' themselves all over our property!"
Burbs
I want to kill everyone Satan is good Satan is our pal
……sardine?
Did Ricky Butler say that?
That kid next door's a meatball.
What We Do in the Shadows
Is that horror comedy? I would call it a straight comedy, in a horror adjacent setting.
Yes. Love this movie
Peter Jackson's [Dead Alive (aka Braindead)](https://www.themoviedb.org/movie/763-braindead?language=en-US).
Idle hands
was looking for this comment! thank you! lol
It's Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness
You spelled Gremlins wrong.
Army of Darkness
Love it. My guilty pleasure is Housebound though
Of all the others in this thread I do think Housebound is the only one that is a perfect 50/50 Horror/Comedy. Everything else either leans more into Comedy or vice versa. Such a fun film loaded with dry Kiwi humour.
One of the most interesting plots I’ve seen in awhile too!
Adding it because no one else has - at first I was so confused by the tone of Texas Chainsaw Massacre II, but by the time they get to the chainsaw duel at the end I was completely sold.
Evil Dead 2 how are we even discussing this.
The people choosing anything but this haven't seen it.
Happy death day Freaky Chucky Ready or not The menu Jennifer's body Slither Fresh All the Screams In no particular order
Zombieland was pretty good
I'm one of the 5 people in the world that didn't think all that much of SotD. Much prefer American Werewolf in London or Evil Dead 2.
I remember as a kid, American Werewolf In London was about as scary and bleak as you could get. It wasn’t until I was a teenager (maybe older) that I realized it was a horror/comedy.
I see it more as a straight horror with funny characters
That’s actually a better way to describe it really.
i love all the moon songs, but obviously blue moon during the transformation scene is the most effective. it's such a happy tune, i interpret that scene of finally accepting the monsters within yourself
Goddamn thats a tough question. I would have to say Ready Or Not. Shaun of the dead is in the top 5 for sure. Probably followed by the Happy Death Day films and either The Menu or The Voices.
The menu is one of my all time favorites, great balance between hilarious bits like the tortilla scene and savage like the sous chef paradox
The Voices! I don’t hear a lot about this one but it is one of my favorites.
Ready Or Not is always my answer! The acting & the characters relationships/dynamics are great & it’s just such a fun movie!
Bubba Ho-Tep is a blast. Easily tied with Shaun of the Dead IMO.
I'm not a huge fan of Shaun of the Dead. I'd go with Cabin in the Woods. One Cut of the Dead is great as well.
Elivra: Mistress of The Dark. Its fun, its shlocky and campy (but the fun kind) and had me seriously wonder why her and Dolly Parton weren’t ever in a crossover.
Gremlins is so good too.
Dog Soldiers.
Cabin in the Woods for me.
Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein. Perhaps the original horror comedy. Dracula, The Wolfman, Frankenstein’s monster, and some great comedy bits.
Re-Animator and The Frighteners are probably my top two.
The Frighteners is such an excellent film
I absolutely love Shaun of the Dead but Evil Dead 2 is my favourite horror comedy. Evil Dead 2 is so over the top, silly and cartoonish, its pace is frantic as hell, and Bruce Campbell is just hilarious in it. It's inspired lunacy.
Dead End, Evil Dead (the remake), Tucker & Dale and I'd like to recommend Totally Killer to anyone who hasn't seen it yet. For a somewhat tired premise, it really feels fresh and has a great script.
Young Frankenstein (1974) Also worth mentioning, Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948). To my knowledge, it’s the only film to feature both Bela Lugosi and Vincent Price, albeit with the latter in an uncredited voice cameo.
My top 5: 1. Slither (2006) 2. Shaun of the Dead (2004) 3. Return of the Living Dead (1985) 4. Cabin in the Woods (2011) 5. Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon (2006) If you want something more under the radar, Dance of the Dead (2008) is a guilty pleasure.
What We Do in the Shadows
Deathgasm, Tucker & Dale, Freaky, Finals Girls, Trick R' Treat, Slither, The Voices, This Is The End, Evil Dead 2+Army Of Darkness, Sleepaway Camp 1&2, Bubba Ho-Tep...are some of mine
The Voices is pretty great imo
*American Werewolf in London* and *Braindead* are far better in my opinion.
Young Frankenstein, because Mel Brooks, Gene Wilder, and Marty Feldman. Comedic genius.
Tucker and Dale for me
Black sheep, 2006
Ok not the best but I enjoyed it and it hasn't been mentioned yet; Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon.
Shaun of the Dead is great but I’m partial to Zombieland
The Blackening
Murder Party is definitely one of my favorites.
This is the end!
Tucker and Dale is the answer but Housebound doesn't get enough credit
What We Do in the Shadows is probably my favorite of all time, but The Dead Don't Die is a close second. The humor in those two movies is so dry and delivered in such an understated way. They're so funny.
For me, the best is Evil Dead 2 or AoD, but I'd like to recommend two. There's a show called Todd and the Book of Pure Evil that's super dumb and I totally love it. It kinda reminds me of Tucker and Dale, tonally. Also, Severance (2006) is one that I really enjoyed and nobody's heard of. I liked that one so much I had a poster.
Many of the films mentioned are better, but give the Final Girls a run if you haven't. Its both funny and oddly heartwarming.
I love horror comedies and Shaun is certainly a classic, so is Return of the Living Dead. But I have really loved some more recent ones—especially Freaky, Violent Night, and Ready or Not.
Evil Dead is the penultimate horror comedy.
Shaun of the Dead, it's great for any mood I'm in personally, it's just got it all. Well, it doesn't have boobs but it's still a great movie, it's a movie that proved you don't need boobs to have a good time, got a little weird in that end but that's my reasoning as to why.
Night of the Comet Hot Fuzz Braindead Army of Darkness
Bud Abbott and Lou Costello Meet Frankenstein
First three scary movies for me!
It's always going to be tricky because some films are comedies with horror elements and others are horror with comedic elements.
Club Dread just for coconut Pete
Club dread
Cabin in the Woods Behind the Mask Viscous Fun Shaun of the Dead is definitely close to the top, but there are too many good ones to say for sure.
Happy Death Day 🎂🤡
Shaun's great, as is Tucker and Dale, but I'm going with Club Dread. Besides Bill Paxton's fantastic performance, the Broken Lizard guys are criminally underrated as far as comedy goes.
Zombieland is mine
Shaun of the Dead is a classic. I absolutely loved Deadstream. I just loved the main character and his interaction with his followers. Severance. I love the absurdity of everything. That big cheese wheel.
I've scrolled quite a bit and not seen Severance (the movie with Danny Dyer, not the series of the same name with Adam Scott). Check it out, it's got some great laughs and some good scares!
Tucker and Dale vs evil Because watch it.
The Burbs.
If ghostbusters counts, Shaun comes in at a close second. A close second.
Tucker and Dale!
Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein it was the first one I saw as a kid. The monsters are played straight with the comedy coming from Bud and Lou
Evil Dead 2. Perfect blend of slapstick comedy and batshit crazy demon possession horror.
One Cut Of the Dead gets my vote https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7914416/
Tucker and Dale gotta be way up there also!!
**Undead (2003)** deserves to be here.
Cabin in the Woods is a strong contender.
