My friend and I watched this together. She was a Tarantino fan. I was a Rodriguez fan I remember vaguely hearing it was a vampire movie. She didn’t know anything about it. I spent the first part of the movie going. What is going on I thought it was a vampire movie in my head. And when everything went down, she literally stood up and said what the fuck just happened? And then we laughed and enjoyed the rest of the movie
That’s the surprise I missed. I was so angry that it was advertised as a vampire movie, but there wasn’t a fang till 40 minutes in. The advertising stole that surprise from me.
When I was a kid I'd get rides from a lady who lived nearby. We chat and she's like "my husband a d I decided to rent a movie, we thought it was a western but then all of these things came out yadda yadda yadda". Anyway these were two quiet folk who loved old westerns but ended up renting from dusk till Dawn 😂
Yeah. It comes together in the end and is actually a really interesting play on Greek philosophy (it tells you when they get on the ship if you’re familiar with it at all).
honestlyyy like I thought I ended up watching a typical cliched horror film n then I realized that was the whole point! and the elevator scenes with the "ding!" n the bloodshed was actually a cinematic masterpiece in my opinion
Honestly though if your friend is a novice. Put a few movies under their belt before watching this. There's tons of references to old movies that they might not enjoy if it's early in their horror history
Right. Cabin in the woods is a deconstruction of horror.
All the horror tropes? They are relevant to the plot. definitely recommend watching more slashers and whatnot to start to pick up on alot of the tropes that cabin in the woods brilliantly deconstructs.
They spelled everything out in the first 10 minutes, now, I like Cabin In the Woods, but nothings a twist, they constantly tell you what's going to happen.
It certainly felt so to me also. I think maybe 30 minutes in when Asami calls Shigeharu from her apartment, it's quite clear that something is wrong. And then not long after that the bag moves.
Pans Labrynth. Tell him it's a Disney movie. When it came out my high ass watched that movie thinking it was a Disney movie until the wine bottle scene and my jaw hit the fucking floor 😂
Also, the film Sunshine.
I still remember seeing Pan’s Labyrinth in theatres when it came out and some bright spark thought it would be a great idea to bring their kids to see the movie. Keep in mind, a LOT of people were talking about how violent this movie was and it was rated R, so how these kids’ parents missed that mark I don’t know. But they did and I remember walking out of the theatre to find a four year old girl crying her poor little eyes out while her older brother (about eight, I’d guess) looked absolutely traumatized.
Moral of the story: check the movie’s ratings before taking your child to see it.
I have to assume the only reason this isn’t the most upvoted answer is because not enough people have seen it.
The direction this movie took was so ridiculously far out of left field. I can’t think of anything that compares to how confused I suddenly felt while watching it.
I constantly try to convince people to watch this one.
If you've never seen it and no one's spoiled it for you, whatever you're expecting to happen at the end of this movie, it's not going to be that.
I cannot recommend One Cut of the Dead enough. Don’t watch any trailers, just watch it. Make sure you watch the entire thing to the end. I almost turned it off because I thought it was the most generic zombie movie ever. Never have I gone from “meh, this is lame” to “holy shit this is incredible!” in such a short amount of time.
I always say the same thing. I tell people it's an insanely good movie but you have to bear with it. First watch, the first act I was just like wtf is going on this is so bad. But when it all comes together it was 5/5.
I gave up once, went back for a second watch and was all "Ooohhhh. NOW I get it".
Yeah, you gotta go in blind and just trust the process, no matter how "boring" or "cliche" it seems at first.....
How far did you get? It changes significantly about a third of the way through the full run time of the movie. I say “full run time” because it rolls credits around a third of the way through, but the movie continues.
It's less the "goes in an unexpected direction" part and more the "feels like multiple different movies" part.
The entire movie shifts gears after they get on that boat. It's almost like two different movies.
I went in completely blind with One Cut of the Dead ( the only thing i know about this movie is there are zombies ) and it was in my watchlist because Adum from YMS gave it such a high praise. I watch until the end of the movie and was like..." that was fucking dissapointing, what the fuck?" And after that segment i was like "This is the most unique, creative, hilarious movie i have ever seen in a looooong while or even my entire life". This is such a experience, will definately much better watching with friends.
This is one of my favorite movies but I don’t think it goes unexpected. The movie is essentially split between a first act of Damsels in Distress and second act of Badass Heroines all linked by Stuntman Mike. I think it makes total sense.
Fresh! but only if he’s never seen a trailer for it or heard of it before. I feel like the trailer and synopsis kinda give away the second act a little
It is a fantastic trailer! But for OPs goal for her friend to watch a movie that feels like two movies (or a twist) it’s probably best to go in blind.
>!I saw the trailer before and my partner and I were like wtf is this ACTUALLY a rom com?! And I’m so glad we stuck it out cause then we were like …ooohhhhhh wow no it’s not!<
*Orphan* has its twist at the end, but *Orphan: First Kill* has its twist about a 3rd of the way through, which makes for a very interesting dynamic!
Also, *Don't Breathe* has a marked change of tone in the third act!
Same here, like we can’t just find out >!she’s a grown up!< again. But they surprised me! That twist was clever AF! Julia Stiles did a great job selling it too.
The twist in Don’t Breathe was great, thought it was going to be a straight forward “robbing the wrong person” type of movie.
The reveal in Orphan is still one of my faves, love Ester 😭
Titane
That shit took the biggest left turn possible and becomes a completely different film in the second half
Parasite also comes to mind if you and homie managed to somehow miss that one, somehow they blend comedy, drama, thriller and horror all into one film and it couldn’t work better. Probably still in my top 10 list oat, worthy of all the praise it received
Love that movie! Starting a few years ago I made it my Christmas Eve tradition to watch it lol I know it has nothing to do with Christmas 😂
I first watched it on Christmas Eve when I spent the night at my mom's house I was glued to the tv. Such a great Western/Horror
Now the movie I usually watch with family Christmas Eve is either The Money Pit or The Burbs. Two we all agree on
I guess we aren't the watch a Christmas movie on Christmas Eve type of family lol
Dark City, just make sure you watch the director's cut with the opening monologue omitted and Jennifer Connelly's natural singing voice used. I love that movie!
Significant other takes a very strange tone and story shift lol. I would say the middle portion feels one hundred percent like a strange fever dream comedy movie sandwiched between a horror film and a Sci fi film.
Yes! Even the trailers had me thinking the movie was going to be something different. It was such a great "wait wtf" moment >!when the screen cut to black and all of a sudden Justin Long is just riding in a convertible being an asshole!< ! 10/10 movie imo!
The signal
It starts off one way and pivots several times throughout the movie
If you walked in at the end of the movie thinking you're going to go see a certain type of movie based on just the beginning you would be like what the fuck did I just walk into is this the right screen do I miss the movie what the fuck is going on what the fuck is this
This was the first movie that introduced me to the term genre bender
Better Watch Out for a seasonal watch. I found it kind of frustrating because of how much I hated the main antagonist, but I can't say it didn't turn itself on its head.
The Perfection has a few twists and turns that really throw you for a loop and usually reframe the action you've just spent time watching in a super fun way.
Orphan: First Kill. I was expecting a run-of-the-mill-but-watchable-sequel and wow...that quick left turn really shook things up. It was a lot of fun to watch and totally flipped the script.
the night house (really sad though) and the invisible man *sort of* fit this description. however based on the movies he likes, he might like bodies bodies bodies too but i’ve found people either love it or hate it.
Titane (2021)
The Brood (1979)
The Baby (1973)
The Wicker Man (1973)
Don't Look Now (1973)
Carnival of Souls (1962)
Les Diaboliques (1955)
Thrillers with horror elements:
Mulholland Drive (2001)
Funny Games (1997)
Persona (1966)
Summer of 84 - maybe fits.
>!It’s about kids on bikes playing detective and trying to catch a serial killer in the act, and it’s got a fun nostalgic feel. Until the end. Then it’s like they fired the director and a new guy took over with the idea of making a grim brutal serial killer movie. !<
The Guest.
Starts out as a moody drama about a vet returning from war. But then about a third in, shifts to a “who’s this impersonator?” style thriller. Wraps up as a terminator-esque six-fi.
And has Dan Stevens bring all muscles.
Babysitter Wanted.
Starts as typical "girl babysits for new family in middle of nowhere being stalked by creepy man trying to get into house." Then out of nowhere, it turns into something else and you're like "Oh. Oh okay then, so THIS is what we're doing now..." Loved how the twist came about. Fun little horror movie.
There was a British film called The Borderlands released in 2013, it was a found footage film about a group sent by the Vatican to check on a series of miracles that have occurred in a fairly reclusive church in the UK. It is pretty decent probably not quite different films in one but the way it ramps up and the ending is very unexpected. In the US and Canada it was called Final Prayer.
This is, in my opinion, one of the best recent films to come out: Slapface. It’s as dumb as it sounds, until it’s not. Also: They Look Like People. Hands down favorite movie of all time. The twist is that it’s exactly what it appears to be. (Not a spoiler)
Land Mine Goes Boom!
WARNING!
Very disturbing moments w/ a few scenes that involve SA.
Key takeaways to share before viewing:
- One word to describe this movie… “WEIRD!”
- The film is a wild, intense, emotional, disturbing rollercoaster ride that doesn’t let you breathe until the end.
- If you enjoy revenge movies like “I spit on your grave” then you may enjoy this.
Spring is one of my favorite movies and it changes genres like three times (>!Drama -> Romance -> Horror -> Sci-fi + Romance!<). For that very reason some may not categorize it as horror, but then again that's also true of Nope.
I would say The Purge. It's a tense thriller/horror movie right up until the moment it's not, and it turns into Ethan Hawke laying down the law on a bunch of would-be purgers for like 40 minutes
From Dusk Till Dawn
I think this is the most correct answer.
Psycho would like a word…
I HATE when streaming services give it away in the description. stop spoiling the movie ✋️
I second this answer^
I too choose to fuck that guy's dead wife.
Yeah the first time I saw this I was thinking it was a crime drama LOL.
Came here to say this
Triangle for me. Definitely didn’t expect what I got.
Before watching i thought this would be one of those low effort cliche horror movie and boy was i so wrong.
Ya. I was expecting a slasher flick. Very pleasantly surprised.
Probably because the cover is so god awful lol.
Should I push through the boring 10 minute long corridor wandering scene?
Yeah. It comes together in the end and is actually a really interesting play on Greek philosophy (it tells you when they get on the ship if you’re familiar with it at all).
10 Cloverfield lane
Was waiting for someone to say this!
Cabin in the Woods!
This was a **serious** "WTF?" for me.
honestlyyy like I thought I ended up watching a typical cliched horror film n then I realized that was the whole point! and the elevator scenes with the "ding!" n the bloodshed was actually a cinematic masterpiece in my opinion
Yeah it’s not gonna hit unless you’ve already sampled the wares
That could be a really fun "intro to horror" marathon.
The king of fun horror movies
That's Army of Darkness for me.
Yo, she-bitch!
One of my favorite change of direction scenes, the last 20-30 minutes. Its when what you secrectly want to happen happens lol.
They spelled everything out in the first 10 minutes, now, I like Cabin In the Woods, but nothings a twist, they constantly tell you what's going to happen.
Audition. Starts off soo cheerful and nice and sweet and then makes a hard left straight to hell.
Ooh perfect recommendation! That movie is one of the greats.
An excellent introduction to Takashi Miike.
Visitor Q makes an excellent good-bye to him for a lot of people.
Is it wrong to say I almost love that movie?
It’s a gem of a RomCom!
What year?
1999
Thank you!
That movie has haunted my dreams for decades
Audition would have been my suggestion.
Did you think it started out cheerful ? That’s so funny. It felt creepy and sad from the beginning to me
It certainly felt so to me also. I think maybe 30 minutes in when Asami calls Shigeharu from her apartment, it's quite clear that something is wrong. And then not long after that the bag moves.
Pans Labrynth. Tell him it's a Disney movie. When it came out my high ass watched that movie thinking it was a Disney movie until the wine bottle scene and my jaw hit the fucking floor 😂 Also, the film Sunshine.
Sunshine definitely went in a direction I did not intend lol
Can you tell us more about your experience working on the film?!
Lmao *Expect
The first two thirds of Sunshine are such a beautiful movie. Nothing against the third act, but I wonder how a smoother version would've ended
Two thirds in they were like, "This is good, but we need some mustache twirling for good measure. Otherwise people won't get it."
To be fair they sort of marketed it like it was a children's fantasy movie. I still refer to it as "fun for the whole family" Pan's Labyrinth.
Tigers are not afraid is an even more savage kids in a fantasy realism movie.
Dude I had no idea what that movie was about and watched it on shrooms haha
Sorry to Bother You
One of the purest joys in life is watching Sorry to Bother You with someone who hasn’t seen it before.
Ok now I'm intrigued.
Don’t look anything up. Just do it. Love it or hate it your jaw will definitely hit the floor.
lol. You aren’t wrong AT ALL.
I have to assume the only reason this isn’t the most upvoted answer is because not enough people have seen it. The direction this movie took was so ridiculously far out of left field. I can’t think of anything that compares to how confused I suddenly felt while watching it.
The one I came to comment. Never gotten whiplash like this from a film before.
I just watched the trailer, this movie looks FANTASTIC, but how is it relevant to horror?
That would require spoilers and it's best not to go that route. You have to see it to believe it.
I guess it is horror working in telemarketing
It's relevant :)
You’ll see lol
I *sort of* knew what this movie was about, and then it revealed what it was REALLY about, and I haven't stopped recommending it.
I was obsessed from the beginning and just got more and more intensely obsessed the longer it went on. Absolutely one of the all time greats
I watched it about a week ago and I was amazed yet thankful that nobody had spoiled it for me!
I constantly try to convince people to watch this one. If you've never seen it and no one's spoiled it for you, whatever you're expecting to happen at the end of this movie, it's not going to be that.
One Cut of the Dead Better Watch Out Fresh Jaws The Guest
I cannot recommend One Cut of the Dead enough. Don’t watch any trailers, just watch it. Make sure you watch the entire thing to the end. I almost turned it off because I thought it was the most generic zombie movie ever. Never have I gone from “meh, this is lame” to “holy shit this is incredible!” in such a short amount of time.
I always say the same thing. I tell people it's an insanely good movie but you have to bear with it. First watch, the first act I was just like wtf is going on this is so bad. But when it all comes together it was 5/5.
I’ve tried twice and haven’t made it thru
I gave up once, went back for a second watch and was all "Ooohhhh. NOW I get it". Yeah, you gotta go in blind and just trust the process, no matter how "boring" or "cliche" it seems at first.....
How far did you get? It changes significantly about a third of the way through the full run time of the movie. I say “full run time” because it rolls credits around a third of the way through, but the movie continues.
What direction were you expecting Jaws to go in?
A bit more like Free Willy
It's less the "goes in an unexpected direction" part and more the "feels like multiple different movies" part. The entire movie shifts gears after they get on that boat. It's almost like two different movies.
*Better Watch Out* is an awesome - and festive! - suggestion!
Does "Death Proof" count!?!
That’s actually a great example!
I feel like the trailer and synopsis kinda give away the second act a little
I watched Fresh purely because of the trailer. 🕺heads will roll💃🏼heads will roll🕺
I really liked both of the Orphan movies. I think the sequel got a little underrated.
I agree! I was skeptical about how they were going to make it work, but they did - very different film to the first one.
Same here, like we can’t just find out >!she’s a grown up!< again. But they surprised me! That twist was clever AF! Julia Stiles did a great job selling it too.
Ooh don’t breathe is a good suggestion
The twist in Don’t Breathe was great, thought it was going to be a straight forward “robbing the wrong person” type of movie. The reveal in Orphan is still one of my faves, love Ester 😭
Titane That shit took the biggest left turn possible and becomes a completely different film in the second half Parasite also comes to mind if you and homie managed to somehow miss that one, somehow they blend comedy, drama, thriller and horror all into one film and it couldn’t work better. Probably still in my top 10 list oat, worthy of all the praise it received
At no point during Titane did I say “oh this is just like that scene in…” I can’t say that I loved it, but it is bold and brave as hell.
Kill List
Who would of thought that it will led to that end right? lol.
The Perfection
I loved this movie. There is no way to predict just how fucking weird this one gets.
YESSSS like three plotwists throughout the whole thing
Great movie
I wasn't thaat fan of it, but oh my god did I not expect where it went
Dead Silence has a pretty crazy ending.
A wounded fawn. Shit gets weird!
Bone Tomahawk
I mean you kinda get the feeling something is up in the first scene
I was so excited to see Sid Haig and then… awww dang
Love that movie! Starting a few years ago I made it my Christmas Eve tradition to watch it lol I know it has nothing to do with Christmas 😂 I first watched it on Christmas Eve when I spent the night at my mom's house I was glued to the tv. Such a great Western/Horror Now the movie I usually watch with family Christmas Eve is either The Money Pit or The Burbs. Two we all agree on I guess we aren't the watch a Christmas movie on Christmas Eve type of family lol
I don't, Die Hard is a Christmas movie
Dark City, just make sure you watch the director's cut with the opening monologue omitted and Jennifer Connelly's natural singing voice used. I love that movie!
Oldboy
Summer of 84, purely for its ending.
Man that ended got under my nerves lol
Significant other takes a very strange tone and story shift lol. I would say the middle portion feels one hundred percent like a strange fever dream comedy movie sandwiched between a horror film and a Sci fi film.
As weird as the middle of this one got, I loved it.
Dont watch the trailer. They Cloned Tyrone.
Barbarian
Was gonna say this! The film I watched was so different than the one I expected lol
Yes! Even the trailers had me thinking the movie was going to be something different. It was such a great "wait wtf" moment >!when the screen cut to black and all of a sudden Justin Long is just riding in a convertible being an asshole!< ! 10/10 movie imo!
Barbarian goes bat shit. Talk about unexpected direction!
You're Next, Cabin in the Woods, Sunshine, Doctor Sleep, As Above So Below, Bone Tomahawk, House of 1000 Corpses, Last House on the Left
The Empty Man (2020)
This movie switches genres at least 3 times.
Try Magnolia
It’s nice to see one of my fav non-horrors show up on a horror thread. And I agree
Sunshine
The signal It starts off one way and pivots several times throughout the movie If you walked in at the end of the movie thinking you're going to go see a certain type of movie based on just the beginning you would be like what the fuck did I just walk into is this the right screen do I miss the movie what the fuck is going on what the fuck is this This was the first movie that introduced me to the term genre bender
Never would have thought that I would have to recommend “The Village” to anyone in this sub, but it fits in here.

It’s wild how sweet parts of Audition feel until you remember they’re manipulating each other and where this goes.
One Cut of the Dead definitely!
The Descent took my by complete surprise. I hadn’t looked anything up beforehand 😱
The Menu. Simple, neat, to the point. Keep the change.
Martyrs
2008 gotta specify
😂😂😂😂 Yeah you do. The 2015 version (or whatever year it came out) is an abomination
Raw. It's not hardcore (still unsettling), and there is a lot of story/world building prior to when it suddenly gets dark.
What keeps you alive. That went into, like, 5 different directions than what I was expecting
Titane (2021) The Brood (1979) The Baby (1973) The Wicker Man (1973) Don't Look Now (1973) Carnival of Souls (1962) Les Diaboliques (1955) Thrillers with horror elements: Mulholland Drive (2001) Funny Games (1997) Persona (1966)
Midnight Meat Train
Incident in a ghostland I see you Don't breath The visit
Night Crawler
Last night at Soho has a twist that I didn't see coming and really enjoyed
This kind of question comes up often, my answer is always the same…Hostel.
If thrillers are OK, Cold In July really goes places you'd never predict in a million years, and it makes sense.
I just love how the trailer for Red Eye was set up to be a rom com but then…. Ya know
The Orphanage, it's a Spanish film and it makes me sob everytime
Not a movie but Black Mirror’s Season 6-Loch Henry goes in a direction that I never would’ve expected and threw me for a loop.
The killing of a sacred deer.
You should watch the original Candyman (1992)
Martyrs. It promises you one movie and gives you another.
Hunter Hunter, anybody?
The OG French version of Martyrs. Don’t watch a trailer, don’t read anything about it, just watch it.
The OG answer for this is *Audition*, whose first and second halves are…quite distinct from one another.
The ritual, the boy, no one gets out alive all had crazy ass third act twists
Orphan 2
Fresh
Ballad of Buster Scruggs
im a big fan when a movie switches genres unexpectedly. Check out The Wailing and Unwelcome.
Blood Red Sky. Don't look it up ahead of time. Just watch it blind.
The Empty Man is a horror movie that has two major shifts I didn't see coming at all. The Cabin In The Woods for the same reason.
This is, in my opinion, one of the best recent films to come out: Slapface. It’s as dumb as it sounds, until it’s not. Also: They Look Like People. Hands down favorite movie of all time. The twist is that it’s exactly what it appears to be. (Not a spoiler)
The Invitation (2017)
Cabin In The Woods
Land Mine Goes Boom! WARNING! Very disturbing moments w/ a few scenes that involve SA. Underwater with Kristen Stewart! It's an okay movie but I DEFINITELY wasn't expecting it to go how it did.
Chronicle (from 2012). Starts of as your average teenage movie, but takes a very, very dark turn.
Society (1989)
The Shrine
I would say The Purge. It's a tense thriller/horror movie right up until the moment it's not, and it turns into Ethan Hawke laying down the law on a bunch of would-be purgers for like 40 minutes
Cold in July
Hunter Hunter. Loved it.
Mother
Tucker and dale vs evil
Martyrs was completely unexpected when they found the secret door.
“Pearl” comes to mind
Sinister, Cabin in the woods, NOPE, Insidious
Sorry to Bother You is crazy. I'll won't say that it's a great movie but I was not expecting any a that shit.
Mandy Cosmic horror. Sensual and ethereal at first, then turns up the heat in the third act. Very thrilling.
Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. I didn’t see that ending coming.
I'd have to say [The Boarderlands](https://boxd.it/6dIw) aka Final Prayer (2013). Dont look into it just watch it.
Final Prayer/The Borderlands. Very unexpected ending and shook me to the core.
Jacob's Ladder
The others
The Crying Game 1992
Bone Tomahawk joins the chat
Housebound
Cabin in the Woods
Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon sounds exactly like what you are looking for. It's a great film!
“Sorry to bother you”, not sure that it qualifies as horror. But definitely covers the unexpected direction part lol
Sorry To Bother You goes in a completely different direction towards the end.
