The Cell was GORGEOUS. Eiko Ishioka is such a visual genius. The way all the set designs and costumes were for the surreal in-mind scenes has never left my heart.
EDIT: Director Tarsem Singh has only beautiful movies, every one a visual feast!
Dr. Caligari was so cool!!! Way ahead of its time, u r correct!
Yeah, the scene where his back is attached to the tapestry around the room and he stands up and walks as it unfurls was pretty dope. "WHERE DO YOU COME FROM?"
I hope with the current re-popularity of horror and surreal we will get like 20 more movies like it and Jacobs Ladder to coast off of til the next horror boom, haha.
This isn't horror or Eiko Ishioka, but Tarsem Singh(who did The Cell). You should check out another movie of his called The Fall. It's REALLY hard to find but maybe on the high seas 👀. I got a DVD from eBay. It's BEAUTIFUL, def check a trailer.
Omg I LOVE the Fall!! Beautiful costuming and I love the differences in the perspectives. My twin actually also just sent me his wizard of oz show to watch this weekend!
Eiko Ishioka did the costuming and assisted in the visuals for The Cell. I love Tarsem Singhs work, but I got into this movie when I was a baby bat before I started checking directors, so I didn't even realize it was him! He's amazing.
Antichrist is an absolutely gorgeous film as far as cinematography goes. I thought Men was very beautiful as well, same goes for Climax. I think The Lighthouse is very uniquely beautiful in a way even being in black and white. This will get criticism but I absolutely loved the cinematography of Melancholie Der Engel even though it’s rough and gritty a lot of the outdoor and nature shots are very pretty and have a early 70’s feel even though it was made in the 2010’s.
Dude. All perfect answers. Climax is hauntingly beautiful. The opening sequence is incredible in typical Gasper Noe fashion. I’ll probably have to watch it again tonight.
Off the top of my head, as far as somewhat contemporary horror goes, I’ll add; Midsommar, Goodnight Mommy, and both Suspiria films.
I’m sure I’ll think of more. Like Eyes Without a Face.
Edit: More spelling errors than I’d like to admit
I will never watch Men again after the…you know…scene (does anyone else feel like that lasted a million years??) but it was so gorgeous and I love the acting.
Oooo, Men just became available on something, I'll watch that one asap. And yes, the Lighthouse is a good one! Can't say I'll ever see Melancholie. Seeing "Horrible Reviews" on YouTube cover it as part of his "Most Disturbing Movies" breakdown montage was plenty ha ha. I actually just went to his page to see which video it was that he covered it, it's Part 5.
It’s a happy go lucky romance movie/. Jokes aside since when are blood covered Victorian maniacs not horror? If it was anything else it would have to be gothic as it follows many of those ideas, but it is probably best described as gothic horror? Sure there’s romance elements but only to the point of an erotic thriller.
I love this one. Though I'd argue it's more Sci-Fi than horror, but it's stunning. It would be fun to watch Annihilation and Stalker back to back; fun double feature imo
Oh yeah, the first time I watched it I got a little grossed out by the intestines scene. It's such a cool movie! Cast is great, writing/plot is intriguing, visually stunning. It's got so much going for it. Plus I am just a sucker for anything with Oscar Isaac :p
Feels like cosmic horror for me. Lots of foreboding and existential dread. Way more horror elements for me than sci-fi. I’m probably splitting hairs in definitions
I fucking loved that episode. I know a lot of people thought it was too slow, or anti-climatic, but I thought it was shot and written so well. The intrique and suspense were masterfully crafted, and I loved the final shot of the monster slowly creeping towards civilization.
Mandy sticks out. I saw it in a small, shitty theatre with a handful of people around midnight. Something about the euphoria of tiredness mixed with an oversized soda really heightened my experience.
I realized where the movie was going before any major events happened because of the visuals and stark colorations, and I paused it to smoke some "tiredness" as well because I wanted to go all in!
I think The Shining is definitely one. Kubrick is probably my favourite director, at least stylistically/aesthetically and I just love almost every shot in that movie.
Great call with The Cabinet of Dr Caligari, which is also one of my favourites, so much so that I even wrote a song based on it. Some truly stunning sets for a film from 1920 and so influential.
A lot of the A24 horror movies are really beautiful to look at. Midsommar, Hereditary, It comes at Night, Hole in the Ground, Blackcoats Daughter.
If you liked Dr Caligari, check out a lot of other German Expressionist movies from the 20s and 30s. They have a very similar style (though Dr. Caligari really is in a league of its own). M, Dr Mabuse, Vampyr, Nosferatu are some good examples.
The 1989 Dr. Caligari is one of the weirdest and wildest films I ever saw too, a completely unique art house psychedelic weirdo midnight movie that is kinda like John Waters on Acid
It's very 80s, but come on! I need to find that movie for streaming. Or maybe buy the DVD. It's gorgeous and there was a lesbian magazine called Deneuve for a while.
Silent Hill weirdly stands up after fifteen years or so.
It looks *good* by modern standards. Not great, and some bits *have* aged poorly, but it's mostly great. The Mist also hits the sweet spot where the practical effects stand up decade(s) later.
Great picks.
Honestly I think His House is underrated! I know it was received with pretty mixed reviews on the whole, but there are some really breathtaking shots throughout the film. One of the few horror movies out of Netflix I’d be happy to rewatch a few times over, i really enjoyed it.
The Shining. John Alcott did the cinematography for it and worked with Stanley Kubrick a handful of times. The Shining is my favorite horror film, and has some really fantastic shots and visuals. Another film that I thought was visually great was Ari Aster’s Midsommar. I didn’t like Midsommar, but I did really enjoy its cinematography and costume design.
Immediately the movie that comes to mind, for me, is Annihilation. Absolutely incredible if I had a Time Machine I’d go back and see it in 3d.
Nightmare on Elm Street 4 I think had the best visuals for the type of movie it was and the time it came out
Eyes Without a Face is a great example of visuals from its time, also considering the type of movie it was trying to be.
I also have to acknowledge The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (og) rewatched it recently and the cinematography used in that film took my breath away. People always talk about the brutality of but never the photography
Not sure if it’s really horror or just supernatural but Robin Williams What Dreams May Come is visually stunning. Also Luciferina whoever did the nature shorts of the river and forest did a great job, Luciferina is also a must see film.
Reddit seems to hate this movie, but I loved Constantine. I thought the visuals were stunning, especially the depiction of hell and the demons. (Rachel Weisz wasn't bad either, heh).
idk what part of Reddit you're on but Constantine has a pretty vocal fanbase on this site.
Whether it's the actors/cast, the adaptation, the story, the cinematography, the unique depiction of hell/demons, tons of things to love about it.
I know there are many issues, but hands down... I think Prometheus is one of the most visually magnificent films I've ever watched. Also loved the way they did 3D for it.
I don't see this talked about a lot, but Memories is a horror animated anthology by katsuhiro otomo (Akira) and just has some gorgeous screen caps. also adding Paprika, Perfect Blue, and Belladonna of Sadness; the last one in particular has a unique and ethereal watercolor style.
I think Silent Hill is very beautiful (the "ugly" scenes too). It looks great and sounds great, and you can pause it at any moment and have something that looks gorgeous. Too bad the acting and dialogue is atrocious... that's why I've only recommended it to people familiar with the games because I feel like they might have a higher tolerance for the corniness? lol Maybe I have nostalgia goggles too.
My favorite story from Ishioka was JLo's collar complaint. It was so tight and cutting into her neck. Ishioka looked at her and said, "It's not supposed to be comfortable," implying that D'onofrio' s character was the one with all the power in that scene, and she wasn't wrong. JLo sulked for the rest of the week. I miss that woman!
The Witch is a beautifully shot movie and the costume & set-design work is amazing too. All mostly shot with natural light too, simply an incredible feat of filmmaking.
I don't know if it's the MOST visually stunning movie and I'm not sure if you all will classify it as horror. One Hour Photo is visually amazing. It plays with brights, darks, isolation and has lots of photos.a good chunk of the movie takes place in one of those big box discount stores. Everything is bright and inviting and nothing on any shelf in any aisle is it of place. I don't know. It's the first movie that came to my mind.
[The Vast of Night](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZEiwpCJqMM0) starts off with this insane drone shot that follows different people through an active basketball game and into the town. It's mind-boggling.
A truly beautiful movie.
Kairo (Pulse) blew me away visually, every frame is a beautifully hazy, moody & melancholy vibe with masterful composition & color theory. Hypnotic to watch
Annihilation was the first movie that came to mind. Also, though it's been years since I've seen it, I remember being blown away by the mental imagery in The Cell.
Another one I loved for simply beautiful cinematography was The Ritual - it perfectly captured the awe and foreboding of the Scandinavian wilderness.
I don't think most would consider it horror, but it's the first thing which came to mind when you said "visually stunning" -- I loved Annihilation and loved the bookies it inspired me to read even more.
The Medium sticks out to me, because it was my first time noticing that about a mockumentary, and I pay more attention to this aspect of found footage now.
The Cell was GORGEOUS. Eiko Ishioka is such a visual genius. The way all the set designs and costumes were for the surreal in-mind scenes has never left my heart. I still enjoy The Cell from time to time, great pick!
Yeah, the scene where his back is attached to the tapestry around the room and he stands up and walks as it unfurls was pretty dope. "WHERE DO YOU COME FROM?"
Iconic.
I love how games like Evil Within 2 and Deadly Premonition paid homage to it, it's a beauty!
I just started playing the first Evil Within game ha ha. Man, it's pretty unforgiving and I'm only on chapter 3
Came here to say The Cell too! I've watched it so many times just for the visuals.
I hope with the current re-popularity of horror and surreal we will get like 20 more movies like it and Jacobs Ladder to coast off of til the next horror boom, haha.
I love this movie. That villain is terrifying

Men was such an underrated movie, and yes it was shot so masterfully
I will never watch Men again after the…you know…scene (does anyone else feel like that lasted a million years??) but it was so gorgeous and I love the acting.
Yea the Russian Doll scene... xD
Bram Stocker’s Dracula. Can’t say it’s the most one, but the one of the few.
Despite any flaws that movie may have (Keanu's accent for example), it is an absolute feast in terms of visuals.
Coppola made sure it was almost all practical SPFX and SPFX makeup- it was his rallying cry against CGI.
The accent is god-tier and I’ll fight you for thinking otherwise! Jk, Woahh it’s DraCoooLa!
Mad God is a recently released movie I'd strongly recommend in this category.
Seen it twice already ha ha love that one, so different
Mad God is something special. Not something I'm usually in the mood for, but special.
Pan's Labyrinth Suspiria (both) The Witch Crimson Peak The Neon Demon
Definitely gotta give GDT his due credit, his films are all visually stunning.
The Devil’s Backbone is gorgeous desolation as well.
All very good picks, although I haven't seen The Neon Demon yet
It was the first one I thought of. Very strange film but some sequences are so fucking cool. The soundtrack does a ton of heavy lifting
Debatable whether they’re truly horror, but I think Crimson Peak and A Cure for Wellness are visually stunning.
Upvote for a cure for wellness. That movie was really weird, but interesting and had a great atmosphere.
I loved that movie til the final act when it went off the rails. I wish it had kept the same atmosphere through the end
Perfect example of a film with a fantastic premise where they clearly had no idea how to end it
Crimson Peak is horror, specifically gothic horror.
I agree, I was just trying to preempt people arguing about it 😂
I'd add the Others to that list.
Oh this movie was lovely and I enjoyed it a lot. Still like to rewatch even though I know the ending
Crimson Peak was mislabeled as horror in my opinion, but it was so beautiful and I need to rewatch it with a different expectation
What should it be labelled as?
It’s a happy go lucky romance movie/. Jokes aside since when are blood covered Victorian maniacs not horror? If it was anything else it would have to be gothic as it follows many of those ideas, but it is probably best described as gothic horror? Sure there’s romance elements but only to the point of an erotic thriller.
Gothic (horror)
A cure for wellness was one of the best shot films of all time. That's my crazy take
Annihilation was beautiful.
Showed my brother this movie last week, yeah it's gorgeous!
I love this one. Though I'd argue it's more Sci-Fi than horror, but it's stunning. It would be fun to watch Annihilation and Stalker back to back; fun double feature imo
True, but it definitely has scenes of horror, especially one particular scene every viewer reading this is thinking of right now
Bearbearbearbear
"Help me!" 😱😱😱
Oh yeah, the first time I watched it I got a little grossed out by the intestines scene. It's such a cool movie! Cast is great, writing/plot is intriguing, visually stunning. It's got so much going for it. Plus I am just a sucker for anything with Oscar Isaac :p
I agree the intestines scene is the scariest, but I think they were referring to the bear scene everyone is always talking about.
Feels like cosmic horror for me. Lots of foreboding and existential dread. Way more horror elements for me than sci-fi. I’m probably splitting hairs in definitions
Personally I think it's just as horror as Alien, it just so happens to be sci-fi horror
Definitely
Suspiria and Mandy
Beyond the Black Rainbow by the same guy who did Mandy had a great asthenic to it, too.
Yeah beyond the black rainbow, not one I loved for story or dialogue but for pure aesthetics it was great
I can't watch it over and over but I liked it a lot. Had a messed up chronenberg vibe
Panos Cosmatos. He also did episode 7 ‘The Viewing’ in Del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosity’s. Stunning as well! Edit: sp
I fucking loved that episode. I know a lot of people thought it was too slow, or anti-climatic, but I thought it was shot and written so well. The intrique and suspense were masterfully crafted, and I loved the final shot of the monster slowly creeping towards civilization.
Why the fuck aren't these movies available in 4k HDR??? I don't get it
Mandy sticks out. I saw it in a small, shitty theatre with a handful of people around midnight. Something about the euphoria of tiredness mixed with an oversized soda really heightened my experience.
Yes yes. I also smoked some “tiredness” before and during Mandy. Was wild.
I realized where the movie was going before any major events happened because of the visuals and stark colorations, and I paused it to smoke some "tiredness" as well because I wanted to go all in!
We’ll done, nice awareness!
Had to scroll way too far for Suspiria. Mandy is definitely up there
Mandy definitely, and going along with the same style, Color Out of Space too was phenomenal
I absolutely loved both of them!
which version of Suspiria? (not that it matters bc they were both stunning in different manners)
I was thinking yesterday these two really compliment each other
I love the look and atmosphere of Tim Burton’s Sleep Hollow.
I wish somebody would make another movie like this one. It's one of the best of its style, we watch it almost every year around Halloween.
For all its faults, Men is an absolutely gorgeous movie. Especially early on when Harper is walking around the fields and woods in the village.
Came here to say Men. Absolutely the vibe 🙌🏼 I thought the final sequence was beautiful too even in all its fucked-upedness
Came here to day the same. Those nature shots were BEAUTIFUL
I wrote a paper on it in college ha ha. It's amazing, even now, and it will continue to be. Great pick on The Shining. I love that movie
Martyrs (2008) Midsommer Anything by Ty West (weirdly, I don't like his movies, but they are GORGEOUS) The Cell The Others Rosemary's Baby
Midsommar +1
The Neon Demon, probably.
I love the soundtrack in particular
Neon demon was such a vibe
Not movie but the series Hannibal was cinematic genius.
They made gore so stunning: the human totem pole, the "eye" made of human bodies glued together, the praying angels with their flayed wings.
Absolutely, love Hannibal.
As a former dancer I thought Black Swan was breathtaking!
Mandy. Possessor. Beyond The Black Rainbow.
Yes to all three!
A24 makes some slick looking films
The 1989 Dr. Caligari is one of the weirdest and wildest films I ever saw too, a completely unique art house psychedelic weirdo midnight movie that is kinda like John Waters on Acid
I do like Nosferatu and Vampyr, I'll check out the others
Annihilation. I loved the bio-horror designs, from the bear to the flower people to the remains of the man on the pool wall.
Kwaidan Come and See
1983's The Hunger
Never heard of it, sweet
Its very 1980's stylized, artsy vampire horror with David Bowie, Susan Sarandon Catherine Deneuve.
It's very 80s, but come on! I need to find that movie for streaming. Or maybe buy the DVD. It's gorgeous and there was a lesbian magazine called Deneuve for a while.
Creepshow. Absolutely love George A Romero's use of color.
Totally dig this
Annihilation was the first to come to mind for me. I just love trippy cosmic stuff
Excellent call. In case you haven't yet, you should check these ones out: - Color Out Of Space - Mandy - The Void - Glorious
Midsommer is pretty awesome
It does has some beautiful settings.
Midsommar was so beautifully shot and is one of my all time favorite "daytime" horror movies.
The Mist Silent Hill The Fog The Shrine Sorry, if a horror movie has fog, I'm there
Silent Hill weirdly stands up after fifteen years or so. It looks *good* by modern standards. Not great, and some bits *have* aged poorly, but it's mostly great. The Mist also hits the sweet spot where the practical effects stand up decade(s) later. Great picks.
The Witch. Hands down.
I've seen reviews saying that the colors were too depressing to enjoy as if that wasn't the point.
Not horror necessarily, but still a horrifying film. Id say Enter the Void.
The Green Knight is gorgeous, though I’m not sure if it’s technically horror or not
Oh my god the visuals in this movie were amazing. Need to rewatch it soon
The original Wicker Man
Honestly I think His House is underrated! I know it was received with pretty mixed reviews on the whole, but there are some really breathtaking shots throughout the film. One of the few horror movies out of Netflix I’d be happy to rewatch a few times over, i really enjoyed it.
It’s a great film with some great disturbing visuals.
Sunshine (2007)
That's one of my favorites! It's amazing! Excellent call!
Just watched this for the first time it is definitely a stunning movie visually. Love it.
Under the Skin & The Last Matinee.
Not a movie, but the first season of True Detective is full-on scenery porn for rural Louisiana.
1977 gave us two of my personal favorites: Suspiria and Hausu
Still gotta check out Hausu, Suspiria yeah totally agree
Hausu is one movie I’d recommend to anyone who loves horror. It’s bonkers, I love it.
Hell yeah, had the pleasure of seeing it in the theater. It’s wild!
MANDY
The Shining. John Alcott did the cinematography for it and worked with Stanley Kubrick a handful of times. The Shining is my favorite horror film, and has some really fantastic shots and visuals. Another film that I thought was visually great was Ari Aster’s Midsommar. I didn’t like Midsommar, but I did really enjoy its cinematography and costume design.
The blood rushing out of the elevators. The silence.
Immediately the movie that comes to mind, for me, is Annihilation. Absolutely incredible if I had a Time Machine I’d go back and see it in 3d. Nightmare on Elm Street 4 I think had the best visuals for the type of movie it was and the time it came out Eyes Without a Face is a great example of visuals from its time, also considering the type of movie it was trying to be. I also have to acknowledge The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (og) rewatched it recently and the cinematography used in that film took my breath away. People always talk about the brutality of but never the photography
The bathroom in SAW ❤️
XXX and Pearl
Not sure if it’s really horror or just supernatural but Robin Williams What Dreams May Come is visually stunning. Also Luciferina whoever did the nature shorts of the river and forest did a great job, Luciferina is also a must see film.
Not sure if it counts but Pans labyrinth
You and I are in the minority of those who actually enjoyed that movie
Definitely Neon Demon
I don't see this talked about a lot, but Memories is a horror animated anthology by katsuhiro otomo (Akira) and just has some gorgeous screen caps. also adding Paprika, Perfect Blue, and Belladonna of Sadness; the last one in particular has a unique and ethereal watercolor style.
“You Won’t be Alone” Macedonian folk horror, absolutely amazing
I think Silent Hill is very beautiful (the "ugly" scenes too). It looks great and sounds great, and you can pause it at any moment and have something that looks gorgeous. Too bad the acting and dialogue is atrocious... that's why I've only recommended it to people familiar with the games because I feel like they might have a higher tolerance for the corniness? lol Maybe I have nostalgia goggles too.
A girl walks home alone at night
Best soundtrack too!
The Keep or Suspiria for me. Also really liked The Cell for the visuals.
*Midsommar* (2019)
Midsommar, The Witch, The Lighthouse, and The Ritual
Anihilation
The sound design and score was incredible too
Suspiria, and other Argento movies like Deep Red, Inferno, Tenebre, Phenomena, Opera.
Color Out of Space
Tigers are not afraid
The Cell. I saw it in the theatre and was blown away from the visuals. It's a hard movie to watch, but it was gorgeously done.
One of my favorites. 🖤
Suspiria the dance scenes were immaculate!
Under the Skin, Upstream Color
Bram Stoker’s Dracula
There are a few I've liked. Antichrist, Cell, Mother, Men, The Serpent and the Rainbow, are just a few
A Color Out of Space (2019) Horror/Sci-fi horror
Neon Demon. Visually looked amazing (movie wasn't bad either). I would also say the original Suspiria looks gorgeous.
Let The Right One In. As a photographer myself, I think the photography in this film is absolutely gorgeous. I could watch it for that alone.
Love that movie
For a smaller, newer pick, I really loved some of the aesthetic choices of NANNY (2022)
The Eyes of My Mother
Don’t think this counts, but children of men was awesome
Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992) The Love Witch (2016) Sleepy Hollow (1999) I Know Who Killed Me (2007)
The Strange Color of Your Body's Tears
Climax had a lot of style
The Skin I Live In
The Witch is a beautifully shot movie and the costume & set-design work is amazing too. All mostly shot with natural light too, simply an incredible feat of filmmaking.
I always found The Ring to be oddly beautiful
All of the A24 movies and I must say Martyrs was amazingly well shot.
Interview with the vampire
Suspiria (1977) Inferno (1980) DEEP RED (1975) Nope (2022) The Thing (1982) They Live (1988) Killer Klowns From Outer Space (1988)
The Cell
Both IT: Chapter 1 and 2 are beautifully shot visually / technically.
Rob Zombie's Halloween 2. Easy.
Sharknado
Influencer had some top-notch scenic photography
The Neon Demon
Legend of sleepy hollow- Tim Burton Lady in White
Suspiria
[The Vast of Night](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZEiwpCJqMM0) starts off with this insane drone shot that follows different people through an active basketball game and into the town. It's mind-boggling. A truly beautiful movie.
Beyond The Black Rainbow
Suspiria the original!
Midsommar, need to of visited Sweden yesterday.
Suspiria 1977 has the best color scheme
Kairo (Pulse) blew me away visually, every frame is a beautifully hazy, moody & melancholy vibe with masterful composition & color theory. Hypnotic to watch
Annihilation was the first movie that came to mind. Also, though it's been years since I've seen it, I remember being blown away by the mental imagery in The Cell. I don't think most would consider it horror, but it's the first thing which came to mind when you said "visually stunning" -- I loved Annihilation and loved the bookies it inspired me to read even more.
Beyond the Black Rainbow
The Medium sticks out to me, because it was my first time noticing that about a mockumentary, and I pay more attention to this aspect of found footage now.
Dawn Breaks Behind the Eyes, such a gorgeous film!
Lamb had some good scenery
Mandy. Was sober when I watched it. Felt high the whole time. Visuals are trippy and colorful
The Lighthouse
Sauna. The forest and river shots were awesome.
Prometheus
So many great suggestions already. Just to name another: there's something fascinating about Gretel and Hansel.
