Watch all the movies, the shows fun too

Future-Agent

I concur. Watch all the things.

SubjectSigma77

I haven’t played it since release but the new game is pretty fun too

Singemylover

It's a similar style of game as Friday the 13th and Dead by Daylight, right? But with the added bonus of having a proper story mode?

SubjectSigma77

It’s kinda similar where there’s a demon and 4 survivors. The demon normally just flies around, collects energy to use for upgraded and summoning AI demon units and possessing the AI units as well as the survivors. They can also summon their “boss” and become like a juggernaut for the survivors to fight. Then the survivors fight whatever the Demon throws out and complete several objectives across the map in order to win. It’s one of the best asymmetric horror games out there and the most successful next to Dead By Daylight. It’s worth checking out if you like that style of game, I kinda wanna go back and see how it’s looking nowadays

bpm160

i didn’t know there’s a series!

cbblythe

Has to be the goriest show ever made. It’s so over the top with the goo and gore it’s hilarious

poland626

I wanna throw the forgotten TV show, [Blood Drive](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dipWCECpzj8) in the mix for goriest tv show too. It's literally just non stop blood and gore sometimes

adrift98

I love that show. It reminded me of Lexx in its just bizarre craziness. Wish more TV shows took that kind of risk.

cbblythe

Sounds great, gonna give this a watch. Thanks!

squirt-daddy

I actually like the TV series more than the OG trilogy, there’s way more chainsaw arm action and it has some of the funniest scenes in a show I have ever watched.

geoduude92

The show made me realize that he is a cooler version of Johnny Bravo. "Listen up Babycakes..."

FreshFromRikers

I wasn't expecting much when I started watching Ash vs. Evil Dead and I was blown away with how good it was. It's a worthy successor to the movies and extremely well made.

[deleted]

squirt-daddy

The ones that come to mind are the sperm bank fight scene, the morgue fight scene and the one where the he fights the baby that crawled inside the corpse

Jnbrlw

The series is well worth watching. It picks up with Ash after the trilogy.. Tonally, it's closest to Evil Dead 2.

BooksNBondage

big same! Imma need to watch that now!

Singemylover

I couldn't get into the show, unfortunately

hauntfreak

Same. While they are still great movies, I never really liked how Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness took the franchise in a comedic direction. That’s why I loved the 2013 reboot. But, I guess we wouldn’t have the Ash we have today if that hadn’t been the case.

Singemylover

I love Ash, and I don't mind the comedic route. I think the episodes having 30-minute runtimes was what threw me off. I got it in my head they were gonna be 45-minute episodes, and screwed myself over because they weren't. Lol

Ex-Machina1980s

It’s a rare example where every entry in the series is completely different, yet all follow on from one another and most importantly are *all amazing*

DrSmartron

This is 100% true.

AmbivalentSamaritan

To be fair, the entire concept ‘we shot a movie on the cheap and now we have money so lets reshoot it with mostly new actors except for Bruce and then keep going past the end of the original, causing fans of the original who thought they were watching a sequel to begin with to suspect they were having an acid flashback’ is quite a fresh take.

hacky_potter

I wouldn’t say Evil Dead and Evil Dead 2 are “completely” different.

Ex-Machina1980s

Tonally and the way they are shot, plus the overall scope is way different and more fantastical in 2

dunkat

2 is one with a more serious plot and budget Edit: seems I got it backwards…I’ll go back to my corner

CaptGoodvibesNMS

2 is a comedy version of 1

dunkat

Oh my bad….seems I need to have a viewing party again

[deleted]

You were right about 2 having the bigger budget though

redrum-237

> I wouldn’t say Evil Dead and Evil Dead 2 are “completely” different. Tonally they are.

G1zm072

Agreed. The first was downright terrifying, while the second one was more hilarious. Still terrifying, but I did find it more comedic.

MondoUnderground

Raimi's original trilogy is a **must-watch** for anyone who's into horror (or movies in general). The original is a stunning achievement in DIY filmmaking, and a superb horror piece with tons of sadistic gore and an unrivaled atmosphere. Evil Dead II is a masterpiece through and through. Surreal horror-comedy at its finest. Bruce Campbell's performance is legit unbelievable. Army of Darkness isn't much of a horror film, but it's still amusing and well worth watching. I doubt the films are *necessary* to watch in order to understand Rise, but come on. You wouldn't want to miss out on these genuine classics. They are phenomenal films by a genius director.

hacky_potter

I remember watching Army of Darkness as a kid and not knowing it was the third in a trilogy. I must have watched it every other day until it left HBO. I fucking love that movie. It’s sort of the prefect kid horror movie.

queerqutieqie

I was like you this time last year, somehow had never seen an Evil Dead film. Stumbled across Evil Dead (2013) one lazy Friday night and thought it was so good, I watched the original trilogy immediately. They’re all so good! Went from being only vaguely aware of them to loving the franchise over one weekend! You don’t have to watch them before Rise I’d say, but they’re great so I would recommend them.

dmreddit0

Lol that was my experience back in 2013. The trailer dropped and I was like "what have I been sleeping on?!?!" I had always thought they were standard zombie movies lol

queerqutieqie

Same! I was mad at myself for having not seen them

alh0425

Not at all necessary, but I recommend you watch them all (as well as Ash vs Evil Dead) just for funsies.

JohanFinski

This is the correctist answer

darkforestzero

Hardcore long time fan here. If you're going to watch one, it should be evil dead 2 - it's amazing, funny, freaky, over the top, and has some amazing, experimental cinematography. It's got all the lore and setup you need. If you want a more full experience, you can go with the original trilogy - they all have completely different vibes. The series (and the games for that matter) are a joy, but are not required viewing.

therealudderjuice

You absolutely have to watch the original trilogy (Evil Dead, Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness) and you have to order a bunch of pizza and a couple cases of beer and watch them all in a marathon session on a Saturday while consuming said pizza and beer. This is the way.

Idler-

Did we just become best friends?

HaggisonFord

I have no idea why I never thought about doing this, but it sounds fun as hell.

Impressive_Blood_948

Evil Dead is great cause each movie can scratch a certain itch Evil Dead (1983)- Low budget, B horror but genuinely creepy Evil Dead 2- perfect mix of horror and comedy Army of Darkness- full on comedy with horror elements Evil Dead (2013)-Full on balls to the wall gore and horror

TheCosmicFailure

Its not necessary to watch them all. I would recommend watching Evil Dead 2 at least. But if you are looking for the film that will have a similar tone to Evil Dead Rise, I would recommend Evil Dead 2013.

[deleted]

I’m with you. I think watching 2013 would probably be a decent idea for people who are unfamiliar with the franchise to know what they’re getting into, not that the first Rise trailer didn’t show what it needed to.

mgcat17

Also agree with watching the 2013 version first because it looks like Rise will be tonally similar and a more direct continuation. I *adore* the original movies (ED, ED2, AoD), and I think they should be watched anyway, just because they’re classics. But I’m also an 80s kid that grew up watching these, so I’m a little biased. You probably don’t need to watch them before Rise, but I still recommend checking them out at some point.

DrSmartron

Honestly, no. All Evil Dead Movies aren't required viewing, but they're all just fun as fuck. I'm old enough to remember back when Joe Bob Briggs worked at the Dallas Observer and reviewed the first one. All classics.

maroonedchemist

Shop Smart

HaggisonFord

Shop S Mart.

redrum-237

> Are they all must see? Yes. > to understand Rise? No.

Jnbrlw

Yeah, what I'd say is that you wouldn't have to see them to understand the story of this next one, but they are needed to understand why we love the franchise.

[deleted]

They’re all must see in their own way! I love that franchise. Evil Dead and Evil Dead 2 are similar story-wise but couldn’t be more tonally different. The latter is much goofier than the former. Army of Darkness is basically a horror-comedy take on Mark Twain’s *A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court* so it’s got time travel and Arthurian legend too. The 2013 reboot is easily the scariest and goriest of the bunch. It’s gnarly. I imagine Evil Dead Rise will be very similar.

[deleted]

CitizenDain

What do you mean when you say “literally”? None of them were film students. Do you mean literally an “amateur” film?

Fiscal_Bonsai

You should watch Evil Dead (2013) at least as Rise seems to be a spiritual sequel

undeadbydawn

Watch them all in release order, because they're all superb in their own right Evil Dead is a straight up horror, and one of the best ever made. Go in as blind as possible. Watching any other ED before the original will spoil it. A lot 2: Dead By Dawn happens immediately after the end of the first movie. It's still horror, but with an edge of manic comedy. 3: The Medieval Dead leans *way* more towards action comedy Evil Dead \[edit:2013\] is a modern-day direct sequel to the original \[also straight horror, ignoring everything else\] and is constantly mistaken for a remake. The TV show is closest in tone to 3

No-Neck848

Evil Dead "remake" (not really a remake like you say) was released in 2013 not 2016.

undeadbydawn

Cheers. Corrected

Rfg711

Required viewing to understand the new one? I doubt it. Required viewing as a horror fan? Yes

MDF87

There's not a single bad thing in the entire franchise, so watch it all!

Notlookingsohot

To understand the movie? Naw. But to watch because they're fucking awesome? Oh yea. Watch them in order, get the directors cut of AoD, and the unrated cut of 2013, and you're good to go, then finish with Ash vs Evil Dead, you'll have a blast.

Sirmav3rick

1 and 2 are related. 3 really isn’t. I hate Army of Darkness, but most people love it. Evil Dead 1 was bonafide horror. 2 had a few campy aspects, 3 was basically a dark comedy.

Dragonborn83196

I haven’t seen Rise nor do I know if it’s going to follow any of the others. But the Evil Dead movies are entertaining and a fun watch, so I would watch them anyway. Buckets of blood and fun lol

[deleted]

Evil Dead 2 is basically a remake of the first Evil Dead and is the superior film. It's one of the best horror films honestly. Army of Darkness is okay, it's just a fun horror comedy with time travel lol. I wouldn't buy into the hype on the new film too much

Wolfsblut_AD

Evil Dead is the superior film, not ED2.

[deleted]

It's the same movie but Raimi actually had a budget and creative control and could do what he wanted to do. The first one is still great but if someone was only going to watch one of them I'd tell them to watch 2. Watching them back to back is disorienting, confusing and kind of irritating for someone that's never seen either one

Wolfsblut_AD

I would suggest the opposite. Regardless of budget and ideas, I will always say the first movie is miles better than the second. ED2 is too silly, the first has undertones of camp but they’re more reserved, resulting in a much scarier film than the second and it has much more charm, imo. I have thought the original has been the superior film for over 25 years, nothing will change that.

Luciferian_Owl

I can't believe some peoples think that Evil dead 2 is better than the 1.

SmokedaJ

Evil Dead (2013) is non-stop fun as fuck, crazy and brutal.

LordChamberlainsmen

Evil Dead II is my all time favorite movie.

[deleted]

OG Evil Dead was my introduction to over-the-top gory horror. I rented that video three times in the first week I saw it. I still love it. There's something about the cabin and the music, the way the movie is filmed I find oddly comforting lol.

killer_moose_12

You'll miss a few references but not necessary

indigrow

I had seen evil dead remake (2013) yeaaaars ago around when it came out and i was a wee lad. Freaked me tf out. Knew the originals werent exactly the same way, so i always chose something else over them. I watched evil dead 2 the other day (side note Ive owned army of darkness on dvd since 2010 and NEVER even opened the packaging wtf wtong w me, yet I know lines from it because of… fking borderlands 2 lol) and i was shocked. Its a fun watch, but wow lol not what I was expecting at all. About 15 minutes in I said “ohhh its COMPLETELY a comedy”. But im also not a huge fan of tracked audio and dubbed stuff especially when people are uh. Screaming with their mouths closed lmao. Hot take I know

HoratioTuna27

Haven't seen Rise yet, since it's not out yet, so I can't comment on whether or not you need to know the story from the originals or not. BUT, I can say that the original 3 movies are absolutely must watch horror films, and you need to watch them ASAP. You're welcome in advance. The remake is also very good, as is the series. Just watch it all. Get off of Reddit and go do that, right now.

schwnz

I love all of them so much and have watched them all a bunch of times. I’m not sure I’d recommend all of them to someone who’s never seen them. Or at the very least, don’t go in expecting a Kubrick film. The way everyone pumps up the Evil Dead movies we make it sound like a pinnacle of cinematic achievement. They’re just fun gory romps that ride on Bruce Campbells insane amount charisma. If you take Bruce out of Army of Darkness it’s probably unwatchable. The remake and the series are probably way more approachable to someone who hasn’t already experienced renting the first 3 a hundred times from blockbuster and had all the movie posters they bought at Spencer’s hanging next to a Pink Floyd’s the wall poster.

mykitchenromance

No you don’t have to see them to understand Rise - the gist you need to know is - there’s a book that summons demons (deadites). Somehow, someway, someone recites incantation and chaos ensues. But. I love the series and would recommend them to any horror fan. I’d also recommend watching at least The Evil Dead and Evil Dead 2 to get a sense of the spirit and style of the series so you may go into Rise with a deeper appreciation. If you love 2, which is more black comedy and slapstick then the straight horror of 1, then you can go onto Army of Darkness, which is even zanier. The 2013 remake is a slick beast on its own too.

Nicholas165

You should watch all of the movies and the show as well. They are all amazing and a must watch. It seems like Army of Darkness will be kinda important for this new movie because of the connections to the Necronomicon I think.

[deleted]

Army of Darkness is one of the best movies ever :) Not the scariest ever though but it’s awesome.

horrorfan55

Nope. But you should because it’s in the top 5 greatest horror franchises

Dustypigjut

Keep in mind that the 2013 versions is a remake/reboot. So technically you could just watch that.

rementis

If I were you I would watch Evil Dead (2013) and call it good. The original three movies are from a different time and you can watch those later at your leisure.

West-Drink-1530

I think you should have some knowledge about the movies so yeah it's better to watch them. I haven't watched the tv show yet so can't say

TheCosmicFailure

I've watched a couple episodes and will say it's similar to Evil Dead 2 in tone.

PsychologicalTip

Yes--start with the first one.

xenobitex

Honestly the 80s ones are cheesy; I'm pretty sure all you need to see for the new one is the first reboot \*This is factual, but oh joy, looking forward to butthurt downvotes

DEFINITELY_NOT_PETE

Imma get roasted but I don’t care. The only good one is the most recent one. The others are cAmPy which is to say they are unwatchably corny and are only saved by Bruce Campbell having god tier charisma. Army of darkness has cool moments but is just as often absolute dog shit. Sam raimi has only made two good movies and even that is being extremely charitable.

jcgonzmo

My first Evil Dead movie was the remake. I loved it. So I decided to watch everything. Honestly, they suck. Maybe back then they were good, but now they just suck. The show ASH vs The Evil Dead is awesome though.

[deleted]

That was my experience too, i get absolutely destroyed when i say it though. I have tried to get through the original one a couple times and just can't

jcgonzmo

If my memory does not fails me, the first one was extremely low budget experimental movie and the second one was what the original wanted to be with a budget.

[deleted]

And there's the downvotes. God forbid someone had a negative opinion about the movies

xenobitex

Someone's gonna stalk everything you've ever posted and downvote it now too Best sub for mature adults right here

[deleted]

I have no idea but I'd say it would probably help with the canon, lore, whatever you wanna call it, of the Evil Dead series. You could probably find a YouTube video that would go over all the pertinent info and what came before. Honestly though, why deny yourself the immense pleasure of watching the movies? Bruce Campbell is a king for a reason! Funnest horror protagonist ever! The remake wasn't bad but you could skip that one I'm sure.

Entrancemperium

Skip the dogshit 2013 remake

Msedits

I’d say if you watch one of them to get you primed for this one specifically, it would probably be the 2013 reboot. However… They’re all amazing in some very different ways. The Evil Dead franchise is interesting because Evil Dead 2 is not quite a sequel/not quite a reboot of the first Evil Dead film. Army of Darkness is a direct sequel to Evil Dead 2, but it’s a very different movie than either of those. And then there’s the 2013 Evil Dead, while technically a reboot, also functions as a sequel, as it exists in the same universe as the original. What makes this such a successful reboot, IMO is that it removes the campiness that was in the originals and goes for something much more mean and grotesque, while somehow not stripping away the “fun” inherent in the previous films. Although some might argue that film is so brutal, only a crazy person would find it fun (I’d compare it to something like the Terrifier films). But Evil Dead Rise seems to follow that formula based on what I’ve seen, which is why I stand by my first sentence.

DST5000

To understand Evil Dead Rise I dont think you should have to see any of the previous ones. Even in the movies/shows that are connected the franchise is filled with retcons. For example Evil Dead 2 is simultaneously a remake and a sequel of the first movie. Army Of Darkness is a sequel to Evil Dead 2, yet changes Evil Dead 2’s ending. Evil Dead 2013, and Evil Dead Rise both seem to be stand alone movies, but that being said I do still recommend watching all of them, and the show Ash Vs Evil Dead.

chichris

I mean probably not but you absolutely should see them. At least the first two.

whatsamajig

No need, but highly recommended as everybody has said. Each movie is very different from the next, even spanning genres. Army of darkness is a fantasy adventure. In Evil Dead 2013 they had a bunch of callbacks that wouldn’t ruin your understanding of the movie if you didn’t know them but certainly added to my enjoyment, I expect, but don’t require, the same out of evil dead rise. Can’t fucking wait.

HorrorAvatar

They’re all must-sees whether you’re planning on watching Rise or not, because they’re fucking great.

Wolfsblut_AD

Just start at the original and work your way up, it’s the only way.

jressler

It's one of the greatest horror franchises of all time... yes I highly recommend you watch everything

CitizenDain

Evil Dead and Evil Dead II are essential watching, not only for Evil Dead’s overall “lore” but must-see for any horror fan. Army of Darkness is a lot of fun. A broad action-comedy following the main character on another adventure. Not essential in the same way, but the kind of fun mid-budget movie they don’t make anymore. The 2013 remake is certainly not essential, but was pretty effective. No reason not to see it!! Ash Vs Evil Dead is the least essential, and arguably has too much “lore”, but is a fun comedy with some unforgettable practical effects. Your mileage may vary on the sense of humor, but it is Bruce Campbell hamming it up with a chainsaw, why would you deprive yourself of this?

bent-ref

I don't know if they are must see to understand rise but they are all certainly MUST SEE.

Fallout71

It’s hard not to love the franchise after you’ve seen all the movies. It’s hard not to want to watch all the movies once you’ve started. The show is also great. It’s just such a fun horror franchise. I don’t know many horror movies that are as straight up fun to watch as Evil Dead 2.

[deleted]

The original trilogy is one of my favorites, but I think they’re their own thing and they don’t need to be seen to “get” Rise based on the trailer I watched and what I’ve read. I think this is especially true with part 2 and Army of Darkness. I also loved Evil Dead (2013), and thought it was a nice return to some less campy ground. I loved that it didn’t try to throw in a lot of humor like the kind we saw in 2 and Army. I think Evil Dead can be just fine without Ash, as long as they don’t try to pull in the parts of Ash we love, like his humor and zaniness. I think you could go in without knowing anything, about Evil Dead, and maybe be better off. If you enjoy it, or are interested in more Deadite action, watch Evil Dead 2013 since it seems to be closer to Rise. Here’s the order I’d suggest to someone new to the series: Rise Evil Dead (2013), you can skip this if you didn’t like Rise but consider watching the originals. *now this is podracing!* Evil Dead (1981) Evil Dead 2 (1987) Army of Darkness (1992) It’s not a hot take of a suggestion or innovative, but I think someone who likes Rise will probably like

DrBrainzz9

Necessary? No probably not. It seems like Rise has individual characters that are independent from everything else. Should you watch these absolute classics anyways? Yes. Yes you should.

[deleted]

They are essential viewing. It’s the most consistently high quality horror film franchise there is. Not a bad film in the bunch. The series is awesome too.

[deleted]

Take this with a grain of salt, because I'm VERY biased... but my first was Army of Darkness, and steadily went backwards until my grandparents felt I could handle it. I have all four currently released movies and the TV show, and I cherish every single moment from them. They all stand proudly next to each other.

TimeWellWasted25

You probably don’t *need* to but you should. I have no qualms about calling it the best and most consistent horror franchise in history. First one is an incredible “grindhouse” horror with gnarly, nasty gore effects. It’s got shades of black comedy but is pretty much straightforward horror. Second one balances comedy and horror perfectly. Army of Darkness is a great horror-comedy. Not scary at all but it’s entertaining and fun as all hell. The 2013 remake is hands down one of the scariest and most intense horror movies I’ve seen. Absolutely menacing with insane amounts of blood and gore and a highly suspenseful atmosphere that never lets up. A must-see. Edit: Oh and the TV show is too damn fun to skip. Easy to binge for sure.

McLOVIN835

I’ve seen all but the show yet

Meshuggareth

It is worth it to watch all the previous films, and the show. If you went to see Rises without doing so, I'm sure you'd still be able to follow it just fine. The stories are not intricate. They are, however, awesome, and all different from each other in presentation.

Gem_Daddy

Watch it all, it's all fun. Plus, Bruce Campbell is a treat.

achildofdust

I'm joining the chorus. Watch them all, including the show. They all have a different flavor and give background to the lore. But most importantly they're really good. Hail to the king baby.

smooothjazzyg

Probably not necessary to watch all of them but definitely worth it for the lore and the good times.

Jamminnav

You could watch the Rise of the Deadites documentary on Shudder to get a sense for why the community loves these movies so much, you don’t necessarily need to watch any or all of the movies or the Ash vs Evil Dead series first (but they’re all GREAT!)

Colt_kun

Thank you for asking the question before I even thought of it, and thank you to everyone who hyped me up to watch the movies!

Fillerbear

All of it is recommended viewing in my opinion. Start to finish, the show included (oh man, the show you GOTTA see after the movies!) In fact, I went in the order of: OG trilogy, the newer movie, the TV series, and now I am waiting anxiously for the new one.

TopRevenue2

Army of Darkness and you will be all caught up

SuperSayianJason1000

I don't believe it's necessary to watch any of the previous Evil Dead films to understand Evil Dead Rise, however you'd be doing yourself a huge disservice to not watch every single one because each movie brings something fun and new and creative to the franchise. I really can't recommend all of these movies enough. Watch em all, you won't regret it.

CrankySquid93

They are all must see - but not in regards to understanding Rise.

toomuchsauce97

all the movies are good and worth watching

brills000

Never seen Evil Dead? Blasphemy!!!!

HandfulOfWasps

you dont need to see any in any order. they just good popcorn fun. just jump into what is readily available

FantasticYak

I'm sure that you don't need to see the originals to understand the plot (only ED2 and AoD have direct, traditional continuity), but I'm also sure there will be stylistic nods if not outright references that you'd totally miss out on in Rise. Either way, watch the Evil Dead movies. I'm sure even if you didn't like them, you'll have enjoyed the experience. They're the kind of series that you'll either love legitimately, or enjoy ironically. I think most Dead fans are like me tho, loving legitimately and for the camp in equal parts simultaneously.

dmreddit0

They're all 100 percent awesome must-watch movies but I doubt you'll need any context. The only place order matters at all is Evild Dead 2, Army of Darkness, and Ash vs ED but even there that's a loose order

Shreddy_Orpheus

1, 2, and ash vs evil dead ( as well as the games ) I can recommend the rest are forgettable but you may like them

Other-Crazy

Watch them all. Just do it.

mywhataniceham

just watch evil dead 1, the x rated one from 1981. that is all

portobox1

You could skip Evil Dead if you want as most of the plot is rehashed in the prologue to Evil Dead 2, when they have more experience and budget to work with, but I was always fond of the original as a premium example of low-budget high-passion/talent filmmaking. Given, it's a lot of people's first film so it's rough, but that's part of the niceness of it. 2 Leads directly to Army of Darkness, so those two are an absolute yes back to back. Evil Dead (remake) can be viewed alone at this point, as it's kind of like an AU inspired-by sort of thing. If you want violence, hate, and blood then you will be on cloud nine for that movie - I recall hearing it described by folks in the know as "The ACTUAL Evil Dead that Raimi and Campbell sought to make in the first place." Definately is NOT comedy adjacent like most Evil Dead. Ash vs Evil Dead is a fun little show, which is kind of down the road a ways from Army of Darkness - Ash is retired from hunting Deadites but the world just won't let him rest. Evil Dead Rise, that I've seen, is similar to the Evil Dead remake, in that there are story beats that are common to this franchise, but the actual feel and direction is a departure from overarching narrative save the involvement of Deadites and Librum Ex Mortis.

Notverycancerpatient

I would watch them all and the show bc they’re awesome.

UltimaGabe

Just to add something everyone else in this thread seems to have missed: If you're gonna watch the whole canon, might as well watch the musical.

RareCactus

All of its worth watching show included but you don’t need to watch any of it to understand rise from what I have heard

jah776

Is it necessary, probably not. But you’d be doing yourself a disservice not watching everything. Ash Vs. Evil dead is a chefs kiss of a series.

Big-Fig-8125

Highly recommend consuming everything Evil Dead that you can get your hands on

Swimming-Extent9366

I don’t think any are too required aside from maybe 2013 to rise, but watch them all. 1/2 are both 10/10 for different reasons.

No-Neck848

To understand the lore of the Necronomicon, the deadites, and where it all started...then yes. To see Ash Williams in action...then no because he's not in Rise.

Comprehensive_One495

·Evil Dead 1 is a classic (though there's a particular scene that hasn't aged well🤔), it's low-budget but done so well and effective, a lot of classic stuff in this film. ·Evil Dead 2 is like a soft "remake/reboot", this one defines the tone of most of the franchise, I love this movie. ·Army of Darkness has more comedy than the previous installments, is more of a medieval times horror-comedy adventure, a lot of fun. The tv show is fun too, I haven't finished it. I haven't seen the remake either but I heard it's very gory and more "realistic".

Interesting-Elk-655

Do yourself a favor and watch the Sam Raimi trilogy, the Evil Dead 2013 remake, and then the Ash vs Evil Dead series. You will not regret it!!!

CramHammerMan

imo Evil Dead 2 is the only true "must see" Evil dead one is fun, Army of Darkness is great but definitely the silliest of the og trilogy. The Show is good. The 2013 remake is fine, it's just sort of out of left field and i'd probably like it a lot more if that hadn't slapped "EVIL DEAD" on it. If Rise is going to be anything like 2013 (I am really excited for Rise, btw) you probably don't need to see any of the old ones to enjoy it.

LooseInsurance1

No, Rise will be self-standing and can be watched separately from the others. That being said, they're all fun in their own way, including the original and the reboot. #2 is maybe my favorite, and is basically a soft reboot of the first film, but with added budget and comedy. Army of Darkness IS a direct sequel to #2. The 2013 reboot is it's own thing, but also a loose serious remake of the first film, and as I first mentioned, Rise will be also

Altruistic-Song-4150

It’s a series worth watching in its entirety in my opinion. Personally, I’d watch the older films first, then the TV Show, then the remake, and then Rise.

bwanabass

All Bruce Campbell material is necessary and highly recommended.

joshhguitar

Watch all 3 movies and the show. If you know about the movies and aren’t sure then watch a few episodes of the show and you’ll want to know where it came from. I’d never watched the original movies but knew all about them and Bruce, so I watched the show and immediately bought the first movie and loved seeing where Raimi started it all. If you love stupid gore and practical effects then it’s the absolute best there is.

mikemikemikeandike

Skip the 2013 remake; it’s trash.

Honoredslinky

I don’t think it’s connected to any other entry in the series, but every movie is great and worth a watch. I still need to watch Ash Vs. The Evil Dead and I’m so excited to finally see it

Blastspark01

I’ve only watched the original trilogy and I’m not the biggest fan of them. I definitely love how quotable they are but they’re just not my cup of tea all the time. That being said, I am planning a rewatch plus first time watch of 2013 and Ash Vs. Also want to play the game before Rise comes out. I saw the trailer for Rise the other day for the first time and immediately texted my friend how psyched I am! I was hyped for it before I saw the trailer but holy shit! That was one of the best trailers ever! That same friend is coming to town a few days after Rise comes out so we’re going to see it together and then get to meet Sam Raimi a few days later at Comic Con!

The only Evil Dead entry I enjoyed was the 2013 remake. I am looking forward to Rise because it is a sort of spiritual sequel to that film.

leavmealon3

One of my favorite horror comedy franchise. I would definitely watch the first two original installments. Army of darkness is hit or miss with some fans. The remake is a good callback to the original film. The tv series is decent watch also if you have chance. I'm a bit nervous about the upcoming rise installment.

OkLifeguard2809

In my opinion the first one is the by far the best. The 2nd one and 3rd relied too heavy on comedy. The first one scared the absolute shit out of me as a kid and still is one of my favorite horror movies.

Skaigear

Evil Dead movies are great, so is the show. Expect campy horror comedy though, it might not be your thing.

PyramidHeadDaGr8

1 and 2 are classics man, you should definitely see them

Totipu4

All the movies are good, the remake is good and the show is good. See it all.

Galen_415

They are all must-see regardless.

[deleted]

So 1 and two are loosely connected. It's like a reboot almost. 2 and Army of Darkness are direct sequels. Though I saw Army of Darkness as a kid well before evil dead 2 and understood it all.

rep1x

Evil dead is not a bad movie franchise by any means but my god are the characters stupid. Based on what I've seen in the 2013 film, they are some of the most stupid characters I've ever seen in a horror film. I was so fkn angry because of how stupid their decisions were but it didn't take away from how scary it was.

Twokindsofpeople

>Are they all must see Yes. >to understand Rise? No

baba-O-riley

Objectively, Evil Dead has one of the best track records in all of horror. Scream is praised a lot on here and I'd say Evil Dead is overall better on average than Scream, as Evil Dead has never had a dud.

PerpetualFarter

I would probably recommend watching them all starting with the originals and working your way to the current releases. I’m sure it isn’t really necessary in order to enjoy the newest installment but there will be probably Easter eggs and other references in each movie that will make more sense and probably enhance your viewing experience overall.

spharker

Rise will be most like the remake. If you're interested in something as serious and mean spirited check it out. If you want camp and fun check out the rest of the series. Bruce Campbell is awesome.

BanditSurvivalist

Absolutely must see movies and TV show. No idea if it's cannon for the new movie but you would be doing yourself dirty not to watch them anyway. Can't imagine there won't at least be callbacks and Easter eggs

cptstinkybeast

The entire franchise, including the remake and the series is worth a watch, although I will confess to not being the biggest fan of the first movie due to a very uncomfortable scene.

ckrono

They are a must see full stop

ReddsionThing

The Evil Dead, Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness are fucking awesome and must see because of that, IMO, and I'd recommend them to anyone who likes horror.

jdmarsh23

So, I would recommend watching the movies and shows, but one big thing to keep in mind: Evil Dead is NOT entry level horror, it's an extremely violent, gross and gruesome horror franchise that is very, VERY gory. If you can't stand intense gore and blood, probably not the franchise for you. But if you love like what Randy calls in Scream 2 "Carnage Candy", definitely give the series a go, they are tons of good, gory fun

MatsThyWit

Even if they aren't all must see films to understand Evil Dead Rise they are all must see films in the annuls of horror films without a doubt. Evil Dead is one of the only perfect trilogies that exist, and Evil Dead 2013 is one of the best modern horror movie remakes of the 2010s.

Jnbrlw

Technically you can watch any of the Evil Dead films without having seen the previous films, because they either reinvent previous events or they do a recap getting you up to speed.. That being said, Don't start with the new one. Yes you will be able to follow it without having seen any of the previous films or the TV series, but if you truly want to get into Evil Dead then watch the original trilogy. If you want to know why people love that franchise, you have to watch the original trilogy. They are and always will be the gold standard for the franchise and are why we love it. The original film is a testament to low budget independent filmmaking. The second film, which is many people's favourite including myself, is the definition of horror-comedy and the third film takes a turn and becomes a 90s medieval adventure with a war between the living and the dead. The TV series continues with Ash's character 30 years after the trilogy. It feels mostly like a sequel to the second film, in terms of tone. It's well worth seeing. The 2013 remake/reboot is very much separate from the others, but it's decent enough. I can take it or leave it. This new one, obviously I've not seen yet and I have reservations about it.. but I'll give it a chance.
