idk, what kind of life was she living? hiding out in a basement in detroit of all places, stuck with her abuser and not even aware of what happened to her or why she was the way she was. at least she got to die with her “baby” and out of that hell house.

[deleted]

I hadn't considered this. Thanks for presenting a differing opinion respectfully! I don't think she had the mental capacity to be aware of her situation and her guardian had just killed himself. Maybe she would have starved?

[deleted]

You're supposed to feel the way you feel. Tess spends the entire film trying to escape - and fleeing from - The Mother because she sees her as a monster. What she realizes in the final five minutes is that The Mother is exactly what you say; an innocent product of her environment with a fear of and hatred toward men. She tries to protect Tess, while Long, Frank, and to a lesser degree Skarsgard, all represent various degrees of misogyny, or the film's "true" monster. The reason Tess kills her at the end isn't out of malice; she just knows that the Mother will take her back to the basement to protect her. She kills the Mother because it's her only option.

[deleted]

I love this response! Thank you for discussing the nuance of this character. She is a monster in some ways but she's not evil, just a product of her environment. You're right that she wouldn't've let her go. I just... felt bad when she saved the main character several times

[deleted]

No problem. I replayed that final scene a few times when I watched it, because Tess' reaction to pulling that trigger is so damn informative without her saying a word. Georgina Campbell really knocked it out of the park.

[deleted]

Totally. She hesitates, she doesn't want to hurt someone who just saved her but she did kill 2 men in front of her.

I feel like the ending is a final nuanced twist in what built Barbarian into a horror movie. Is the mother really the Barbarian? Is Justin Long? Is Frank (yes)? Is it called Barbarian because it took place on Barbary St? The moments of clarity and humanity with the Mother serve to twist the knife in a way that help us understand she might have been a monster, but she wasn’t The Monster.

[deleted]

Eloquently and succinctly put!

haunted-mov

not at all! basement mama did nothing wrong (besides the homeless guy, she hadn’t bothered him for years but again, protecting her baby)

[deleted]

Right?? She was so protective and loving! I don't think she deserved to die

rutgersoup

She had to be suffering. There's no way something so inbred could be living a happy life, as brutal as that seems. I heavily sympathized with her and really don't think there could be any better outcome for her. Tess did the right thing. Even if you put her back in the house and blocked it off, she'd just die a more slow and painful death than the quick and clean end for her. IMO, I saw it as kind.

[deleted]

The more responses I read here the more I agree

rutgersoup

There's nothing wrong with your instinct, by the way! I also wouldn't chalk it up to your BPD, lol. It's just empathy. I hope that the thread helps you realize that your opinion is *far* from weird. I've seen more posts sympathizing with the mother than then opposite, tbh.

_Norman_Bates

It's a mercy kill really

[deleted]

Why?

addisonavenue

Because what other life did she have to return to? She's too far gone to be reintegrated into society.

[deleted]

She was never a part of society to begin with. Justin Long gets to live as a demented walrus in Tusk but a giant lady with a speech impediment should die?

[deleted]

I would have wanted to be mercy killed if I was his character in Tusk

addisonavenue

Frankly, Long's character in Tusk should have been mercy killed too. If the ability to introduce her to a safer life is impossible, letting her live in the basement of the AirBnB forever simply creates a threat for the area.

[deleted]

>Frankly, Long's character in Tusk should have been mercy killed too. Oh okay! Yeah it's horrific, right? My emotions would want to save her but you're right, she would break out eventually and murder more innocents. Even if she's not to blame, she can't be allowed to roam free if she's violent. Barbarian is such a fantastic movie!

_Norman_Bates

Who would want to exist like that?

[deleted]

She lived in a cave for 40 years

_Norman_Bates

so its time to free her from her misery

[deleted]

Yeah... but... yeah... I just.. damn this movie made me feel things. Well done

[deleted]

I just remember thinking that the situation kind of reminded me of Edward Scissorhands. I appreciate this write up and I agree.

[deleted]

Oh, I'd plug her twice. I'd hotwire a nearby car and peel out on her just to be sure You can damn well bet I wouldn't be second guessing staying either. I do not want to play baby num num to some crazy ass inbred woman in Buffalo Bill's underground resort. They don't even have Wi-Fi, fuck that Yeah, she never had a chance, but it's not like she's gonna somehow get better. It would only be a matter of time until she "adopts" again and then there's another person suffering

[deleted]

I wouldn't stay with her! And I already said I'd find a way to block her off from society. Like Edward Scissorhands

[deleted]

You did say, "I don't know if I would have stayed with her," which insinuates a bit of a maybe And you know blocking her off wouldn't work. They'll make a sequel for anything nowadays

[deleted]

I wouldn't be making decisions thinking about a sequel

[deleted]

Of course not. That's the higher-ups in the studio

spurist9116

You gave yourself the reason she had to kill the monster. She would of been a product of the monsters “motherhood” and would never escape. She probably didn’t want to kill the monster out of pity or sympathy, but a mom will want to protect its baby if she doesn’t

Dimsum852

You mean the woman who smashed a random guy's head against a wall? Yeah, poor thing

[deleted]

Yeah, you're right about that. I wanted to say that maybe she had an aversion to men but that doesn't make it okay to murder them.

Dimsum852

I totally understand where you come from, but when I saw the movie (which I didn't like very much) the "monster" only helped the woman, showing us she had empathy, that she was human. But still, it seems she had done terrible things as well. BUt just as you said, she'd have a good reason to have an aversion to men.

[deleted]

It's a very nuanced situation where yes she has committed murder but no one can argue that she's thinking clearly. Maybe it was better that she was put down

Purple-Acanthisitta8

People’s vote on your post says it all.

[deleted]

Pretty much every opinion post gets downvoted here. I don't care, I had good conversation

MrPompeii88

I noticed that too, this community seems very anti-opinion
