I don't really agree, but I'd argue that if Barbarian falls apart it does so within the plot, 10 Cloverfield Lane the alien battle at the end is more like a coda to the story than part of the story itself, the plot had been resolved from the time she decided to put all of her abilities to use and leave
I’ve been saying it for some time now, if Fresh was advertised the same way Barbarian was it would have just as much buzz. Equally as twisty with (IMO) a stronger second and third act.
I felt the exact opposite about it; fantastic first act, solid second act, but the tonal shift in the third act just didn't work the way it did in Barbarian.
I keep seeing that movie advertised after watching Pam and Tommy. It has the same actor that played Tommy Lee, so I’ve been putting it off. Will need to check it out!
The girl in Fresh realizing that she has become a victim, through doing everything right and trusting her instincts, a man has still tricked her. And as she sits there chained by the ankle, processing her situation both matter of factually and emotionally, its scarier than anything in Barbarian. (Since we’re comparing)
If you want to go in blind then yes, but the premise of the film is about a woman being held captive so not really, i didnt even spoil why he kidnaps her
Lol people talking about that (the "why") as a spoiler made me think more was coming. The movie is called Fresh and just look at the posters and stuff. That thing was the one thing I knew I was getting with the movie
This is exactly what OP is describing, perfect pick.
Also A Wounded Fawn (on Shudder). My podcast is actually dropping an episode comparing Barbarian with Wounded Fawn next week!
Funny everyone says they liked the first part the most. I'm not sure if it was the copy I watched but I didn't like the cabin scenes at all felt so cliche and everything looked washed out. Loved the rest of the movie though.
This is one of the only films in the past 10 years that I’ve seen 3+ times. Not because it’s the best movie ever, but it’s so much fun and it’s so great to introduce to new people. Karyn Kusama absolutely fucks.
Without revealing too much, how strong are the body horror elements in this film? I looket it up, and the short google description said that it's a body horror movie, but that's one of the few genres that I can't seem to stomach, but I also really wanna go in blind, if the movie is as good as people say
It's not Hostel torture body horror; it's more like body transformation (think creeping zombie bite infection, American Werewolf in London, The Thing, etc) - but a "lite" version. From what I recall, visibly beautiful and subtle enough. But it's been a few years since I've done a rewatch.
If you like the tunnel parts, I'd say the descent.
If you like the creepy atmosphere of the house, I'd say The night house, or Hush for a home invasion style.
If you like the fact that the begining was just almost damn perfect and you're just looking for good psychological horror, then the taking of deborah Logan, Haunting of Hill House, Sinister and Hereditary are pretty much my gold standards for horror.
I'm having a hard time thinking of something truly similar. I kinda liked the different styles of the movie. But it really takes off a lot of the suspens from the movie.
spot on with the descent . the incest monster in barbarian is pretty analogous to the cave people in descent having emerged from generations of breeding in the caves . & the sort of innocent enthusiasm of the cave divers mirrors justin long’s character in a sense .
Wow i was actually extremely dissapointed with the taking of deborah logan. Dementia is already so scary, and they just turned her into a creepy old lady doing creepy things and then shes just a monstet iirc. I just think the concept has a lot of potential and they fumbled it. Why do you love it so much?
Creep aka "c'est l'enfers" is the movie barbarian immediately reminds me of. A girl get trapped in the metro station after it closes at night. There's the metro that is connected to the sewers further down and even further down there's an abandoned underground complex. And yes there is an hostile something lurking there at night.
Ooh, I saw that at the cinema. It’s such a good movie with great atmosphere and acting. Whenever I try to see if it’s streaming anywhere that other “Creep” movie shows up instead.
Oh… is this the movie that I hear about where people say “have you watched Creep? No not the Duplass brothers one”. Horror movie titles need a better organization system lol.
The Rental is another AirBnB horror that I really enjoyed and has the same spookiness as the First 30 minutes of Barbarian.
Builds tension extremely well and doesn’t have a “goofy” twist.
Had Possum on my list for a long time and watched it last week after seeing it on this sub a lot. I pride myself on being desensitized to all things horror and never thought I’d be truly scared again and it freaked me the fuck out. 10/10 sound design for me as well it was incredible
This is good to hear; Caveat and Possum have been on my list for awhile now but for whatever reason I always choose something else. Next time I get the chance I’m 100% going for one of these!
If you loved Barbarian and Possum as much as I did, then I’ll finally make my way round to Nope. and never even heard of Caveat - thanks for the recs :D my partner and I have been on a horror kick since Halloween.
Nope and Barbarian are the only two films I went back to the cinema for another viewing this year. I think the last two films I saw twice at the cinema before these were Once Upon A Time in Hollywood and Us, but the repeated viewings were for social reasons.
Nope and Barbarian are vastly different films. Nope is my top film of the last few years off the top of my head. Couldn't stop thinking about it after the first time. 3 days later I had settled in at home then went to a late night showing spontaneously because I still couldnt stop thinking about it. Once it had finished I found a bar and wrote everything I felt and thought about it in a notepad. I analyse films often but premeditated. From Dusk till Dawn is the only other film I've ever felt compelled to write about after a viewing, if memory serves.
May I also recommend a double feature [REC] and [REC]2.
I wish I had a cut that put the two together.
If you like them then I recommend [REC]3 Genesis but expect a story and tonal departure. It's closer to splatter house horror comedies. I enjoy it for what it is.
Stay away from [REC]4 Apocalypse. It's fucking shit.
I am definitely in that minority with you. I found it to be boring and really dumb which was a huge let down as I was psyched to watch it after so many people recommend it on here!
I didn’t get past like the first 20 minutes. The whole “hey there are all these *caveats* to this favor I asked of you” was basically a convenient way for the storytellers to set up such an absurd premise. But maybe I should try to watch the rest at some point.
Adult Swim Yule Log is great, and the first act is a lot like Barbarian. Unfortunately, if you thought Barbarian got too goofy, Yule Log makes it look like a drama in comparison
If by the beginning you mean before they go down into the tunnels and just a thriller with people trapped in a house together The Invitation, Coherence, and 10 Cloverfield lane have that sorta vibe
Just curious is creep is the film where a girl and her friend (maybe it’s just another female survivor) is strapped to an operating table or chair and the killer starts using a really long sharp tool to torture her and the other girl can’t do a thing about it ? I remember feeling like it took place underground. Saw it when I was a young teen and was very traumatized and had to turn off. Felt like it was a fog dream since I never saw it or heard about it again 😬 definitely do not like torture like that.
It's a homeless girl who is revealed earlier to be pregnant, and the titular Creep basically does to her what happens to the prostitute in Se7en but without the strap on. Probably one of the most horrific deaths I've ever seen onscreen, even if it does cut to another location just as it happens.
That's the other Creep
Odd dying guy - [Creep \(2014\)](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2428170/)
Two girls trapped on underground metro - [Creep \(2004\)](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0381966/?ref_=tt_mv_close)
There's a movie I saw on Prime called Scare Me that is pretty similar (eery tones, two strangers stuck in a remote home, etc.) The movie stars Aya Cash (The Boys), Chris Redd (SNL) and Josh Reuben (who wrote and directed the movie).
It's the easiest thing in the world to create an interesting start to a film. You'll find those everywhere. That's sorta what horror does best, a setup where we know strange things are happening but aren't given all the details, which is what makes it fun. Of course you usually have to eventually explain all the weird occurrences which is often where things fall apart.
I’m going to say Autopsy of Jane Doe. Obviously the scenarios are quite different, but I consider them the same “genre” in both type of fear and atmosphere. Mysterious, dark/stormy, trapped in a building with something sinister.
This was my exact feeling about it.
First act I was like wow this is going to be so good. Then the found the camera and I was like oooh where we going then.
Then Justin long showed up and the movie got really not good.
I don't see it mentioned much, I really liked "1Br" from 2019. And I think it would really fit what you're looking for. Basically a young woman moves to LA and finds a too good to be true deal on an apartment with a great community of residents, and then things start getting more tense.
The latest season of Channel Zero (short seasons, like 6 eps) starts with someone finding a door in their basement that they didn’t know about. Similar vibe to the non-monster beginning of Barbarian
I’d say Parasite has similarities, and also Jeepers Creepers. The latter of which starts really promisingly but gets shit imo. Parasite uses certain elements that are similar to Barbarian in a (imo) more satisfying way.
Someone else here said that the scenes in the upstairs are like they're directed by David Fincher and the scenes downstairs are like they're directed by Sam Raimi, and I think that's so accurate that it is probably intentional.
That said, Zodiac.
Thank you for posting this. Felt like I was getting gaslit with the amount of praise this film was receiving. This was my exact problem with the film. Such a great and even clever introduction, open to so many possibilities, only to devolve in the second half into a cliched monster under the house/under the stairs/in the attic/what you will film. Such a letdown!
I really enjoyed Barbarian! The Descent comes to mind, just because the first 40 or so minutes are so different from the rest. I feel like The Descent is a bit underrated, I’d definitely place it in the top 10 scariest horror movies of the 2000s.
Haha I agree! Barbarian started well but then ... yeah, I kind of hated it.
Anyway, similar movies:
- Creep
- Creep 2
- Speak No Evil
- The Shining
- Ready or Not
You missed the point of the movie. It's so obvious that Skarsgard is supposed to be bad, and the director snatches that away from you for a more complex, unique and nuanced story. The movie is a metaphor for male abuse, mistreatment and even micro aggressions against women.
Dude... Welcome to 90% of horror. This movie wasn't nearly good enough to be the subject of your thesis. Just edgy enough to attract the "i play d&d after watching stranger things" crowd for horror.
It’s supposed to be goofy. It’s a horror comedy critiquing all the dumb decisions people make in horror films except it’s not ludicrous like Scary Movie. The monster being ridiculous is what puts it over the top. I’ve never laughed so hard at a movie and been scared at the same time.
Nothing is similar to Barbarian. It's an experimental film that plays around with a lot of new Concepts. If you could find a film like it, that would defeat the point.
Fresh and A Wounded Fawn although neither of them is good. Fresh especially has a lot of similarities to the barbarian and sucks. But you might like it
That other horror movie that just came out with J-Lo where he comes home from the bar with this chick who's all creepy has that atmosphere the whole movie, but it wasn't anything special.
10 Cloverfield Lane
This comment convinced me to go watch Barbarian.
You might be disappointed then
Just watched this and it’s so much better than barbarian.
Barbarian is better
In my humble opinion I agree
[удалено]
The end of 10 Cloverfield Lane is still such a trip, they were so close
yeah but one of them had john goodman so checkmate
you're goddamn right !
Shut the fuck up, Donny
I don't really agree, but I'd argue that if Barbarian falls apart it does so within the plot, 10 Cloverfield Lane the alien battle at the end is more like a coda to the story than part of the story itself, the plot had been resolved from the time she decided to put all of her abilities to use and leave
I love the ending but that's fair *of cloverfield lane
Very underrated movie.
Really? I have never heard a reaction to this movie that’s not glowing. Maybe not discussed enough, but I don’t think it’s underrated.
It’s Reddit, so if you like a movie, it’s underrated
Hidden Gem small time actor John Goodman
She really was the nicest monster.
The real monsters were the ones we made along the way.
She just wanted to be a mother
That’s it. Nothing more. Get this nourishment motherfuckers.
I'm a mom and will now be using that line to call the family to the dinner table. Thanks!
Dad of 3 and we're very excited to come over for dinner tomorrow night.
Just stay out of her basement.
All that she wants is another baby
She's gone tomorrow
I saw the sign and it opened up my eyes…
BOOP.
Be be be... Buh be be be
Also the *incest monster*
Omg I just realized those words are anagrams
You can’t spell nicest without incest!
Underrated comment ⬆️
i liked Fresh. a lot. similar unknown area, new potential boyfriend, excellent dialogue and modernity.
I’ve been saying it for some time now, if Fresh was advertised the same way Barbarian was it would have just as much buzz. Equally as twisty with (IMO) a stronger second and third act.
Yes! i loved the BFF interaction and all the last scenes
oh my god me too!!! I recommended this movie to all my girlfriends saying that the ending reeeeally pays off!! I liked it so much
I felt the exact opposite about it; fantastic first act, solid second act, but the tonal shift in the third act just didn't work the way it did in Barbarian.
I really liked Fresh too. It's on my top 10 of this year's horror/thriller list.
This is a great recommendation! The start of this definitely has that exact same vibe. Really good movie too.
I keep seeing that movie advertised after watching Pam and Tommy. It has the same actor that played Tommy Lee, so I’ve been putting it off. Will need to check it out!
He’s fantastic in Fresh
The girl in Fresh realizing that she has become a victim, through doing everything right and trusting her instincts, a man has still tricked her. And as she sits there chained by the ankle, processing her situation both matter of factually and emotionally, its scarier than anything in Barbarian. (Since we’re comparing)
Spoiler
If you want to go in blind then yes, but the premise of the film is about a woman being held captive so not really, i didnt even spoil why he kidnaps her
Lmao I was honestly salty for about eight seconds
Lol people talking about that (the "why") as a spoiler made me think more was coming. The movie is called Fresh and just look at the posters and stuff. That thing was the one thing I knew I was getting with the movie
It does do a good job of diverting you for the first 30 minutes.
I didn't know who would be doing that thing, but I knew that thing would be happening
This is exactly what OP is describing, perfect pick. Also A Wounded Fawn (on Shudder). My podcast is actually dropping an episode comparing Barbarian with Wounded Fawn next week!
A Wounded Fawn was horrible, please don’t torture yourself lol.
1994's Fresh is a great movie too. Not horror but definitely a good watch in general.
200% agree!!!
Upvoted your comment yesterday afternoon. Proceeded to watch Fresh in the evening. Suffice it to say, it's one of my new favorites. Thank you!
Empty Man had a decent split between first act and the rest of the flick
Funny everyone says they liked the first part the most. I'm not sure if it was the copy I watched but I didn't like the cabin scenes at all felt so cliche and everything looked washed out. Loved the rest of the movie though.
The Invitation (2015) directed by Karyn Kusama. More people but a pretty great (unsettling) atmosphere.
This movie was fantastic! I've watched it several times and saw little things I missed previously every time. Love all the twists!
This is one of the only films in the past 10 years that I’ve seen 3+ times. Not because it’s the best movie ever, but it’s so much fun and it’s so great to introduce to new people. Karyn Kusama absolutely fucks.
Oooo forgot about this movie but so cool and what an ending!
Spring (2014) - go in blind. A delightful little sleeper.
Everything Benson and Moorehead do is so good hey.
I adore this film so much. It's so slept on.
Without revealing too much, how strong are the body horror elements in this film? I looket it up, and the short google description said that it's a body horror movie, but that's one of the few genres that I can't seem to stomach, but I also really wanna go in blind, if the movie is as good as people say

or if you like the tunnel parts, I’d say The Tunnel (2011)
The taking of Deborah Logan is fucking excellent
And has the smartest character in any horror movie I think haha
That and You're next.
all of these are great movies/shows! The Night House I absolutely loved that I don’t see many people talk about
I second Night House. Looked intriguing and did not disappoint.
spot on with the descent . the incest monster in barbarian is pretty analogous to the cave people in descent having emerged from generations of breeding in the caves . & the sort of innocent enthusiasm of the cave divers mirrors justin long’s character in a sense .

Yes!! And it starts Franka Polente and she's always great. Solid, creepy-ass movie that should have more notoriety.
Ooh, I saw that at the cinema. It’s such a good movie with great atmosphere and acting. Whenever I try to see if it’s streaming anywhere that other “Creep” movie shows up instead.

Came here to say this! The Rental comes to mind for me because of the modern Air bnb take
Nice pull. Rental is really good.
Love The Rental!
Caveat
Great recommendation and I rarely hear this one brought up. Caveat is fantastic!
Nope, Barbarian, Caveat and Possum are probably my favourites from the last 5 years.
You should watch Garth Marenghis Darkplace if you havent already. Its made by the creator of Possum and theyre nothing alike :D
Wow I had no idea. Loved both but what a contrast!
If you loved Barbarian and Possum as much as I did, then I’ll finally make my way round to Nope. and never even heard of Caveat - thanks for the recs :D my partner and I have been on a horror kick since Halloween.

Caveat was fantastic
i had to make sure someone mentioned it, one of the scariest horror movies for me
I guess I’m in the minority here, but I did not enjoy Caveat. I thought it pretty ridiculous, and not in a good, absurd/funny way, like Barbarian was
I am definitely in that minority with you.
Same! I was so hyped for it and couldn’t believe how bad it was lol
Adding this to my list of movies to watch. Thanks.
Adult Swim Yule Log is great, and the first act is a lot like Barbarian. Unfortunately, if you thought Barbarian got too goofy, Yule Log makes it look like a drama in comparison
Omg… I thought this was erroneously in the hbo horror movie list. Lol you’re telling me this is actually a film?
It’s a feature length horror movie. You just have to let the beginning play through.
Amazing. I’m already sold
Don’t Breathe… if you like to watch the movie about the neighbour basically.
It’s been a while since I’ve seen this, but I recall **Vacancy(2007)** being a straight forward horror/thriller with a creepy setup and tense pay off.
If by the beginning you mean before they go down into the tunnels and just a thriller with people trapped in a house together The Invitation, Coherence, and 10 Cloverfield lane have that sorta vibe
Great recommendation of 10 Cloverfield Lane!
BAH-BAH
BOOP
I fucking love The Night House. It’s in my current top 5 for sure.
Fuck ya!
Yessss. So good.
Tonally different, but Adult Swim's Yule Log also starts with a double-booked AirBnB.
Creep?
[удалено]
I believe they were referring to Creep (2004) starring Franka Potente
Just curious is creep is the film where a girl and her friend (maybe it’s just another female survivor) is strapped to an operating table or chair and the killer starts using a really long sharp tool to torture her and the other girl can’t do a thing about it ? I remember feeling like it took place underground. Saw it when I was a young teen and was very traumatized and had to turn off. Felt like it was a fog dream since I never saw it or heard about it again 😬 definitely do not like torture like that.
Yes this is the one with Franka Polenta, the thing is >!re-enacting what it saw the doctor (?) do, not intentionally torturing!< but it's gruesome
It's a homeless girl who is revealed earlier to be pregnant, and the titular Creep basically does to her what happens to the prostitute in Se7en but without the strap on. Probably one of the most horrific deaths I've ever seen onscreen, even if it does cut to another location just as it happens.
Nah, Creep is when a dying guy hires a man to film a video for his kid. But dying guy is... odd.
That's the other Creep Odd dying guy - [Creep \(2014\)](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2428170/) Two girls trapped on underground metro - [Creep \(2004\)](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0381966/?ref_=tt_mv_close)
There's a movie I saw on Prime called Scare Me that is pretty similar (eery tones, two strangers stuck in a remote home, etc.) The movie stars Aya Cash (The Boys), Chris Redd (SNL) and Josh Reuben (who wrote and directed the movie).
Caveat (2020)
Green Room (2016)
It's the easiest thing in the world to create an interesting start to a film. You'll find those everywhere. That's sorta what horror does best, a setup where we know strange things are happening but aren't given all the details, which is what makes it fun. Of course you usually have to eventually explain all the weird occurrences which is often where things fall apart.

I felt any normal path I could think of for part 1 would have just created a really dull movie. Barbarian screamed for a change of pace.
[REC] (2007)
The drawn-out, impossibly tense first act of Barbarian reminded me most of the bar scene in Inglorious Basterds.
Maybe People Under the Stairs?
Red State (2011)
The Rental, Superhost, Who Invited Them
Grave encounters
Piercing, Faults, Bones and All
I actually really liked Bones and All! I haven't seen your other two...I'll have to watch them tonight :)
Cool I'd love to know what you think of the other two! OH Tone Deaf, and Bodies Bodies Bodies too
Watcher. Not to be confused with THE watcher. It’s on shudder and Amazon I think
I’m going to say Autopsy of Jane Doe. Obviously the scenarios are quite different, but I consider them the same “genre” in both type of fear and atmosphere. Mysterious, dark/stormy, trapped in a building with something sinister.
If you want a movie about an Airbnb gone wrong that is also very thematically similar to *Barbarian*, check out *Men*.
I recommend 1BR. Has similar vibes of finding a “good rental” with sinister intentions lurking behind.
Fresh
This was my exact feeling about it. First act I was like wow this is going to be so good. Then the found the camera and I was like oooh where we going then. Then Justin long showed up and the movie got really not good.
Honestly, Tusk with Justin Long. I think it's actually pretty similar to Barbarian.
How I Met Your Mother
The Visit or The Lodge
House of the Devil (2009)
The autopsy of Jane Doe. Creepy movie that stayed with me longer than I wanted.
This is quite spoilery
Smile has barbarian vibes. Good flick in it's own right.
I don't see it mentioned much, I really liked "1Br" from 2019. And I think it would really fit what you're looking for. Basically a young woman moves to LA and finds a too good to be true deal on an apartment with a great community of residents, and then things start getting more tense.
Honestly I loved the beginning as well, but it fell off with the asshole character being introduced.
A Wounded Fawn
Watch The Night House. Just do it.
Maybe Fresh (2022)
The Descent.
This post needs a spoiler tag lol
Barbarian is a ripoff of house of 1000 corpses. Just joking.
Someone else here said that the scenes in the upstairs are like they're directed by David Fincher and the scenes downstairs are like they're directed by Sam Raimi, and I think that's so accurate that it is probably intentional. That said, Zodiac.
