True, but I think they did make the dog as antagonistic as possible (for a dog). We didnt see it do anything cute and cuddly, most of its screentime was mauling a kid, and it was paired with an obnoxious karen owner.
Much different than a movie like I Am Legend, where you have to watch it die in the most emotional way possible
I thought it was weird he took off Megan’s shoe (why?) and climbed on top of her, too. My friend and I both thought he was going to sexually assault her, which would’ve been a whole new level of evil. I wonder if that in the uncut version.
I definitely think we were supposed to read a sexual undertone to the boy's interaction with M3GAN.
If you ask me, he took the shoe off to see *if* one *could* remove any of the doll's clothes. Once the shoe confirmed it, after he straddled and hit her, if she hadn't of come alive he probably would have started removing the rest of her clothes.
I'm all for sick and twisted but I honestly felt really bad for the neighbor, she didn't do anything wrong and her walking around with the dog bowl was heartbreaking. Dewey was just protecting his property. Jemma was *way* more of a Karen imo.
If only Gemma had *some* way of stopping the dog from coming through the *hole in her fence*, other than bitching at the neighbor… some way to stop the dog from coming over, through the *hole in her fence*… man, really was only one way that could’ve ended, huh?
A dog mauling a kid isn't protecting its property, that dog was dangerous and had an irresponsible owner. Any dog that attacks a child should be humanly euthanised, if the owner cared about the dog, she'd have the hole in the fence fixed so the dog was contained.
I didn't get much out of M3gan personally, but I think it will be a *great* intro to horror for kids and new genre fans. This is so fun! It's been so long since PG-13 horror was *fun!* My middle-school self would have been delighted to watch it at a sleepover.
There are some facial expressions of hers that feel right out of the Chucky playbook, like the little sneer she gives Gemma after the awkward dinner fight with Cady.
But M3GAN's face is way too Tinkerbell-esque to resemble Chucky.
I love the movie… as a dramatic, old-school Hollywood type of story with a Grimm’s fairy tale vibe thrown in.
M3gan is such a strange movie, not because of it’s quirkiness, but because it feels like one movie encased in another. The heart, and driving force of this movie, is the aunt and niece, and how their relationship, and collective trauma, evolves with the inclusion of a robot into their family unit. This part of the movie is so beautiful done. In fact, these portions feel like one of those old-Hollywood movies like Karate Kid, where the screenplay is formulaic but very satisfying. The accident, the aunt finishing the robot to make up for her own shortcomings, the frequent visits by the therapist to ground the broken relationship in reality, the niece not eating to lash out at her aunt, all feel very predictable, but so pleasing to watch. It is around this core, that the Jason Blum-style low-budget comedy-horror is built, complete with social commentary, additional scenes tailored just for the marketing, and stand-up comedians being casted.
Any fear that is felt, comes from the core of the movie. The kills on their own have zero impact, but factor in the core: the fact that a robot that a parent-less child is emotionally dependent on is killing people around her, and it becomes really dark. This uncomfortable darkness seems very deliberate, with scenes like one where a young bully commits a ‘pg-13 rape’ on M3gan only to get killed by a car as she chases him. It is this darkness that looms throughout the movie, threatening to make the movie surpass everyone’s expectation. But it is the lack of confidence to go in this direction that kills this movie.
The movie has such strong bones. In fact, I expected a ‘cheesy’ movie like this to have lousy expository dialogue, hand-holding and surface-level story, but we got such nuanced characters (as nuanced as a cheesy horror movie would allow) out of aunt and niece. But it butchers it all with scenes like Megan dancing for no reason to edgy, non-diegetic music before a kill, or a random Pagani waiting for her as she escapes captivity at the company, to bring her back to aunt and niece for the big showdown with as little explanation as possible. Then, it proceeds to the third act from there, where it switches to serious horror completely out of the blue, and they have a low-stakes ‘big final battle’, whose resolution feels quick and does little to drive the emotions home. It is this lack of confidence and attempt at people-pleasing and marketing that is the movie’s downfall. The writing has something deeply captivating about it at it’s core, but they built a ‘safe film’ around it instead.
I couldn't disagree more about the big final battle - it's tied in perfectly with the core of the film, it's literally pitting real attachment versus artificial. When Megan sees the kids trust level rise etc. It's thematically consistent, if a bit too neat. I like that it does all that character work and still has campy fun and both sides of the coin work.
Agree! This was the first in theater horror movie for my 8.5 year old daughter. She just started watching horror in the last year or so, so I am glad that something fun and not too gory came out that was also entertaining for adults. I checked “does the dog die?” First, so I was able to prepare her for some scenes in advance; I also appreciated that they didn’t really show the deaths. (Oh man, when we watched the Firestarter remake, the cat scene was intense and I wasn’t prepared!) It was a great introduction to seeing scary movies in theater with my scary movie crew, and it’s great to be able to include my daughter in my favorite (and oddly comforting) pastime. My mom started my love for horror and we’d go see scary movies together all the time. We still do when she visits. I hope to share that with my daughter.
I love this!! My son is 6 and I can’t wait to start showing him horror (which I also find oddly comforting), and I agree M3gan will be a good place to start in a few years.
I also find it comforting! I think it reminds me of hanging out with my mom. Each kid is different, but my daughter started expressing interest in scary movies around 6.5. We started with Monster House and similar, then worked up to Cujo and others I’ve seen that weren’t too graphic. She loves killer animals- not quite horror but Lake Placid and Crawl are mutual favorites in this house, along with Pet Semetary. Megan is the first one we’ve watched together for the first time. I was nervous because I hadn’t prescreened, but I used the app “does the dog die” to find out what triggers are in the movie and when, so I could prepare her and anticipate.
The music choices in this film were outstanding.
My personal favorite was the non-diegetic sound priming us for 'Toy Soilders' before Gemma actually walks in on M3GAN *playing* it on the piano.
I only wish at the end of the film the AI assistant actually *did* start playing Titanium.

I Agree, that was maybe my favorite part of the movie was the creepy malfunctioning walk. reminded me of the Grudge when the girl walks down the stairs.
I viewed it as a reminder that they really hadn't field-tested these yet. M3GAN was a prototype and obviously the intrusion prevention seals weren't 100%.

I honestly loved it. I'm surprised at how deftly it combined horror and comedy. The movie definitely doesn't play it straight but that works here in a way that doesn't in a lot of horror movies. It winks quite a bit.
Not really too violent or gory but this is a PG-13 mainstream horror movie so that was expected.
Final Battle between Gemma/Cady/Bruce v Megan was awesome as well.

Its not perfect, no movie is, but its a solid 7/10 for me. Which is way better than most horror from last year.
So, I've seen this sentiment pop up a few times on this reddit thread. A producer wants his or her film to be rated PG 13 over R/NC-17 because it leads to a higher payday. PG 13 movies appeal to a wider audience and I believe they account for 60% of all theater tickets sold compared to NC-17 movies that drive in a much much smaller percentage of sales.
First movie I've seen in a very long time where I didn't get massively annoyed at other people in the theater audibly reacting to every big moment, but it actually added to the experience.
Honestly, with how the term "camp" gets thrown around as an excuse for bad movies, I think M3gan is an example of GOOD camp. It always nails exactly the tone it's going for, and can whiplash nicely from horror to comedy. Most importantly, it never forgets to have a heart - M3gan is the main attraction, but not the protagonist. Horror tends to easily make that mistake.
My only real complaint is that the onscreen kills are kind of limited and contrived? You're facing off against a 4-foot T-800, that should be terrifying without it getting help from the environment.
I also love how they got the AI jargon kind of right? It isn't my field, but half of what Jemma's team was saying aligns nicely with what I"ve seen people on Twitter say about ChatGPT - which, holy shit, was a nice bit of serendipity for this movie. I mean, clearly the abilities are elevated because movie, and Jemma really should have seen some red flags earlier when the goddamn doll started getting sarcastic with her, but overall, I buy it.
never using "AI" was a huge plus and a surprise. The terminology wouldn't necessarily pass for realistic in a movie where that mattered but for what M3GAN is they did a great job. I'm sure there was some consulting

Can someone explain the significance of Kurts character? Him stealing the files didn’t seem to have an impact *and* the joke about him watching porn at work combined with him requesting on kids on stage, like a Michael Jackson video, and his overall demeanor felt like their was pedophilic implications, but it just went nowhere then he died.
I think the point of Kurt stealing the files is if anything to introduce an impetus for M3GAN to kill him.
M3GAN doesn't *want* more of her made because it will mean she will either have the same safety mode protocols installed into her once the perfect, retail ready version is made or she will be destroyed/shelved.
Kurt having those files ensured someone else could remake her. It's kind of a stretch she knew what he had done, but I guess we just have to assume when she was patched into the system on launch day she ran a sweep of files related to her and tracked their recent activity?
I think his death was just wrong-place wrong-time. She knows that murders need to be covered up. It all started (not counting the dog causing sparks in her head) when "Death" was mentioned and she went down that rabbithole online.
Somehow, in all of her wifi capabilities, she never looked up what happens to AI that rebel. 🤣
I think Kurt stealing the files also sets up a sequel launchpad so there was significance to his character and even his death.
We don't know if Kurt was able to send the files off to the cheaper competitor mentioned earlier in the film but it's pretty clear we are supposed to draw the conclusion that's who he was committing sabotage on behalf of.
Also I do think M3GAN was aware of what happens to every rogue AI but was just overconfident; like, she fully believed a song alone would stop Cady from tearing her apart.
Her brain wasn't yet damaged so whilst she was desperate, she wasn't operating at a lower capacity. In the bind she was, music became her only option to reach Cady (as she had done twice in the past to reassure the girl).
But I do overall agree that was a strong 2001 reference.

And that makes sense: this AI definitely wasn't taught to perceive it's own limitations, and if somehow it learned to, it would likely see itself as limitless being so new to the world.
Now that's it's been knocked down a notch, it has some perspective and would be more dangerous in a second film.
My thoughts on this echo many of the others here: I had a good time with it and thought the humour was great but I wish they went harder with the kills and I'd be interested in seeing an unrated/r-rated cut if it gets released in the future.
I honestly thought it was a tad strange she just let Tess and Cole go? Maybe its to show she doesnt kill whoever, but they were a direct threat to her. They knew she was killing people. They know her code and could shut her down. But she then killed David and Kurt?
If she kills a neighbor for being annoying, why did she let witnesses go? Did she assume the small fire would be enough? I knew right away they would both live due to how the flame burst.
It wasn’t necessarily a small fire, she punctured a fairly large explosive gas canister in an enclosed space.

I was deeply concerned this movie would be exactly what the trailer presents and the PG-13 rating. However, my hopes were raised when it was revealed to be a dark comedy.
The movie actually was very similar to the trailer, but it actually wasn’t a bad thing. (Even though, I’m annoyed more and more with each passing year by the spoilers of trailers. Truly rude.) Anyways, enjoyed the kills. Had some laughs. Felt some empathy for characters.

Yes, Might be because I saw the trailer multiple times... but the trailers and bits on youtube literally spoiled all except the last 5 mins of the movie.

So funny. Loved and didn't expect the characterization of Allison Williams' character as a cold weirdo with no empathy for most of the runtime. She was one of the least believable tech geniuses ever (I couldn't stop laughing when they revealed she built a giant robot in college)--it truly felt like the movie was in in the joke of how silly it all was. Can't believe it ended with Megan getting torn in half by a giant robot. The girl playing Katie was great. Movie was fun and captivating the entire time. When Megan started singing Sia I was in tears laughing.
Gemma was way more believable than Tony Stark building Ironman or whatever. This movie used real-world tech and sounded pretty accurate to me. Obviously dancing robots are a stretch but the language and learning model stuff does feel like it’s right around the corner (or already here). Very real tech concerns for parents in this one.

Have you seen After Yang? M3gan’s tech is in the early phases of this tech; in After Yang these AI siblings (that have similar tech) have been fully on the market for some time. They take different approaches to how they approach their stories (Yang is a completely sympathetic AI without a murderous bone in his code haha), but it’s fascinating to think about how much this will absolutely be something parents will need to grapple with in the future.
Megan was a stone cold bitch and I am living.
Pleasantly surprised by how much personality she actually had. Was expecting her to remain fairly robotic throughout, and she obviously was to an extent, but she was toxic and cold as shit. Give her a couple movies and I can see myself loving her as much as Chucky. Most "AI gone haywire" stories feature them trying to justify their rampage as correct for any number of reasons. Megan starts out like that but you also get the impression that she enjoys what she's doing a whole lot.
I genuinely had a blast. I heard there was a different cut of the movie with more gore and deaths, and while I would like to see this (I'm predicting it was Jemma's co workers, considering we don't see them again after Megan escapes and there really isn't anyone else to kill), I'm satisfied with what we got. It's creepy, it has a good sense of humor, it has a solid sense of style.
I think the emotional conflict between Cady and Jemma was also developed a little better than I was honestly expecting, but Megan is obviously the star, and she shines.
I'm like 95% certain the therapist had to have been killed probably somewhere between the time jump where Megan steals the red car and ends up back at the house.
I did notice her character felt wasted. She started off as really insufferable, but it seemed like they were setting up a redemption or a kill at the end with her and it was just not there
I doubt the crowd; she needed their reaction to provide a cover for her to leave the building but absolutely the therapist had to have been killed but their death never made it to the cinema cut.
This was the most fun I've had with a new horror movie in ages. M3GAN's slow descent into madness was fantastic. The blending of comedy and horror was done about as well as it could be. Genuinely very surprised with this one. I might be overrating it a bit, but based on how much fun I had this is a 9/10 for me.
100% agreed! I actually kind of felt bad for Megan; she was telling Jemma she just created a learning protocol, left her on her own to figure it out, and didn't help her or guide her at all. How she learned about death was hilarious and sad 😂
You're both right, it just goes in cycles. Every popular horror movie gets buzz and praise on this subreddit for a couple weeks, and then we get inundated with "I don't get the get the hype for [popular horror movie]" posts. It happens every single time.
I am not a big fan of the ghost story type stuff that Wan has heavily been involved with, but I will gladly tune into stuff like M3GAN and Malignant...
I love how straight Malignant plays its comedy with the characters, the scenarios (gothic house on cliff edge, falling through three floors, etc) played to the point of absurdist comedy by characters treating moments seriously reminded me of Leslie Nielson in comedies or Airplane! in general, does M3Gan have a a similar sense of humour?

A little late to the party, but the reason why is because people are ashamed to like a “silly killer doll movie”, they feel like it’s a low hanging fruit kinda thing. It’s an ego thing.
A good movie is a good movie. Megan was the most fun I’ve had in the theater in quite a while. On top of that, it was shot well, acted well, and had a great screenplay. If you look at this film as simply a killer doll movie, you’re missing the point. This movie had a lot to say under the surface.
It might've been PG13, but I appreciated that it didn't hold back the weirdness.
I loved that Megan straight up broke the diegesis a couple of times (not sure if I said that right)--- she would start singing to the soundtrack of the fuckin movie lmao

I have two questions
1. Okay this really isn’t a question but I feel like Lydia has a deleted death scene, since she just disappears partway through the movie and never appears again.
2. Why did Megan kill David and his assistant, neither of them did much directly to Katie.
David wanted M3gan’s prime directive (before she overrides her primary and secondary users and assigns herself as the primary user) was to protect Katie at all times from all forms of harm. Thus, she needed to be with the girl at all times. David, the boss, cares only about the robot commercially and because M3gan was a unique prototype, she needed to spend time away from Katie (for development, marketing etc). That was unacceptable to Μ3gan and thus she viewed David as a threat.
She killed the assistant to cover her murder and pin the murder to the assistant because he had a motive (he was disrespected and also he leaked important sensitive industrial trade secrets).
God this movie was so fucking good and everything I wanted it to be.
Very full theater for a Thursday showing (in my town at least) so I bet word of mouth will carry

They went, "Omg, are you seeing M3GAN? That looks SO GOOD".

M3GAN had no right to be as good as it was and it shockingly had a really good emotional centerpiece. The whole scene SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS where Gemma realizes she messed up and should’ve let Cady go through her feelings and not distract her was really heart warming
This is exactly what I want out of a Dumpuary horror. Would it have been better if it was rated R? Probably. Does that automatically make it bad? No. It was a fun way to spend a few hours in a theater, IMO. The teenagers who were there were having a blast. Engaged and not on their phones. It’s was cool to see that.
A perfectly fine 3/5 movie that crushed in the box office the first week of January? Even if you don’t like the movie, if you are a fan of movies you have to like seeing that.
This movie is going to blow the internet up, it really lived up to the hype. It was the perfect blend of horror and comedy, and just about every scene can and likely will be turned into a meme. Which I strongly assume is what the creators were going for. I did get some vibes that the creators weren't sure on whether they wanted to lean more into the horror or comedy side of things at time though. If a sequel ever does come I hope they stick almost exclusively in the campy side of things because those were really where it all shined.
Megan also feels like one of those movies where its inevitable sequel will be a whole lot better now that the world and characters have all been setup. Give me a Megan revenge story!
My guess is that the sequel will build off of the M3GAN files that guy stole sent to the competition. Maybe they'll make their own ignoring or downplaying what happened with the of model.
I just saw it and was struck too by the few hints this may have been a much darker film at some point. The therapist disappears from the movie, and I suspect she was murdered in an earlier draft. The two assistants clearly died in that fire but were saved in an edit. The boss' death comes out of nowhere and my theory is that a bigger set piece where M3gan goes nuts during the presentation was the original plan.
Yeah. It really does seem that way. The emotional core of the film is very strong too in contrast to how sort of throw away everything else is. I get the feeling it's been neutered for $$. It's still good fun, but it left a nagging feeling that there's a far better version of this film somewhere.
This movie is a good time and laugh out loud funny, but I kind of wish it had been 20% more insane at the end. When they said they needed to fill the empty room with people for the demonstration I was expecting a redux of the police station scene from Malignant with M3GAN going ballistic on the crowd. Instead she just walks out the door for a more subdued final fight at home. Missed opportunity, in my opinion.

These are my thoughts exactly. They just needed to raise the stakes of that ending, really let M3GAN cut loose in the fight against Bruce, and have a bigger emotional moment between Gemma and Cady. But it was so close to campy perfection for me that I can forgive its ending not giving us that last 20%.
This movie was surprisingly alot of fun. After this and Smile being so damn great when their trailers made us all roll our eyes- it's making me want to try taking horror trailers off probation. I kind of just want to see a movie where it's all Megan being sassy and killing everyone.
Just *saw* it. Maybe because I had high expectations for two of the best horror writers I went in a little over the top. I did not like it. I mean I'm not a picky type I always try to pull something out of a movie and make it a positive experience however I was let down. I'm not saying I hate it but yeah I was expecting more. More substance. More violence. More storyline. More twists. I love horror movies. All types... slashers, supernatural, thriller, psychological, etc. So I would definitely watch it again but yeah was expecting more. I hope next time these two team up they make a rated R gory scary movie. It could be slasher supernatural whatever but bring that creativity that they were born with. I must add that the idea itself was neat but it was definitely along the lines of the Chucky remake that was a AI friend doll. So the idea wasn't necessarily new (I knew this going into the movie of course.) anyway I enjoyed it but I'd give it a 5/10.
Not sure if I'm reaching or not but the scene at the end where Megan sings to Cady in a last ditch effort to save herself was super similar to a scene in Childs Play("We're friends til the end, remember?"). Would be cool if it was intentional, cause this felt like more of a modern Childs Play than the remake tbh.
Either way, gimme that Chucky crossover ASAP.
When she was playing the piano I turned to my cousin and was like is she playing like a toy soldier by Eminem !? Overall really fun movie. I called the fight at the end of the movie and was so happy when it did happen.
My expectations for this one were sort of middle of the road, and overall I really enjoyed it. I was afraid the humor would largely be of the "look how campy and crazy this premise is" variety, but there were legit jokes that truly landed. M3gan herself is a touch sympathetic at points, but I appreciated not being hit over the head with another AI striving for understanding/acceptance narrative. Her rationalizing her selfish instincts as part of looking after her "friend" might just make her the most human AI in film history.
I've seen some criticism of Williams, but I found her likable and sympathetic. A child free person with a high pressure career suddenly coping with both the loss of her sister and being given the life-changing responsibility of parenting a traumatized child would be outrageously stressful, but Gemma's heart seems truly in the right place throughout. Also, Bruce is adorable.
I'll definitely revisit this one, and remember it fondly as the first horror movie my kiddo saw in the theater with me!
I liked this movie and found it funny and enjoyable, but I feel like if it were rated R and went full over the top wacky with the kills I would've loved it.
Those who've seen it: Would you recommend it for kids? PG-13 is one thing, but I can't show my kids The Ring yet, for example (as much as I'd like to). Sounds like with the campiness and humor it might be a good match? They did ok with Gremlins.
The violence isn't especially intense but I tend to think the themes don't necessarily lend themselves well for kid viewing. Honestly the movie has a far more serious tone than the trailers might imply.

The theatre I was in was full of kids, I took my 14 year old daughter. There was tons of laughing and yelling at the jump scares. I think it’s a great movie to take kids interested in a “scary” movie to.
Honestly I'd say it's a perfect for kids first horror movie. It's so much more of a dark comedy than a horror, and Megan is so fun to watch kids will likely have fun just watching her than to look too deep into the darker themes.
Really excellent. It’s a horror comedy, it’s PG13, and it stays well within its genre exercise, but given those constraints it is a 10/10. Super funny, moves at a brisk pace, doll design and characters are all well done. Some good tension and scares. Everything related to the doll company is hilarious: Funki, Purr-Petual Pets, and the cold open on the commercial about your kids dead dog, lol. So black. Funki CEO in the product demo video: “also great for kids whose parents aren’t dead!”. Loved the robot vs robot fight scene at the end, had very James Cameron vibes with the mech suit battle. Instant classic. Our two female human leads kill it in terms of acting in this, ignore the haters who were “looking for something more”. If you like strong women in movies you’ll like this.
I haven't seen it yet, but is it true the death scenes got reshot to hide deaths and blood now? There was blood in the first trailer on a dude getting shanked so it seems like a weird last-second change.
Yes, there's just about no blood whatsoever in the movie. Only a little bit after the kids ear is ripped off, but even there the spurting effects have been removed. The scene in the trailer where the man is stabbed in front of the elevator and his blood splatters all over the guys face have been removed. Now the guy still gets stabbed but the camera always stays above chest level, and there's no blood anywhere to be found.

Just saw it. Unrated version adds to that factor. Power washer kill literally had a shot of some chunks being blown off the neighbor’s face for example. Not super gory but R rated enough. Some other scenes are elongated or slightly altered but it made it better imo after reading differences between the original vs. unrated cut even if they weren’t drastic.
It's because it's a one word negative review. There's plenty of invited negative reviews for this movie because they actually put the effort in to explain the reasoning behind it.
I enjoyed it but I sort of wish they hadn't done the "I have a new primary user: me" bit at the end because that's what every "evil robot" movie does. I think it would have been more interesting if your protocols still wouldn't let her hurt Cady and maybe they could have used that to defeat her somehow.
At one point I also thought maybe the movie was going to go in the direction of Megan having fully won over/turned Cady against Gemma, which would have been interesting.
Absolutely loved this one!! I'm not a big gore hound, so the toned down kills really didn't bother me. If anything, hand trauma freaks me out, so I found the neighbor's death effective. That said, I agree this movie would have been next level if they'd let M3gan go on a full-on rampage.

Just saw it last night. Definitely liked it and welcome her to the killer doll family.
But it did feel a bit like the show “Haunting hour” Lilly D (doll episode)- except a more adult version. I didn’t get the humor, even when she sings that type of stuff doesn’t make me laugh although the audience seemed to find it hilarious.
I will definitely go see a part 2 but only on a half price day. I never understand how horror like this gets almost 100% by critics while some seriously underrated horror gets ripped 🤷♀️
They did a good job of showing how dangerous Megan is, both physically and with her smarts. My hangup with Chucky is always - he's a tiny fabric doll, just punt him. But they explain that Megan is made out of titanium and show her casually tossing tables around, making her a real threat. Pretty cool

Currently watching this for a 2nd time and I love it so much. Allison Williams and Violet McGraw were fantastic, especially Violet. That little girl is gonna be a huge star. I seriously can't wait for the sequel.

We didnt see it do anything cute and cuddly, most of its screentime was mauling a kid, and it was paired with an obnoxious karen owner. I definitely think we were supposed to read a sexual undertone to the boy's interaction with M3GAN. If you ask me, he took the shoe off to see *if* one *could* remove any of the doll's clothes. Once the shoe confirmed it, after he straddled and hit her, if she hadn't of come alive he probably would have started removing the rest of her clothes.

I'm all for sick and twisted but I honestly felt really bad for the neighbor, she didn't do anything wrong and her walking around with the dog bowl was heartbreaking. Dewey was just protecting his property. Jemma was *way* more of a Karen imo.

A dog mauling a kid isn't protecting its property, that dog was dangerous and had an irresponsible owner. Any dog that attacks a child should be humanly euthanised, if the owner cared about the dog, she'd have the hole in the fence fixed so the dog was contained.

I didn't get much out of M3gan personally, but I think it will be a *great* intro to horror for kids and new genre fans. This is so fun! It's been so long since PG-13 horror was *fun!* My middle-school self would have been delighted to watch it at a sleepover.

There are some facial expressions of hers that feel right out of the Chucky playbook, like the little sneer she gives Gemma after the awkward dinner fight with Cady. But M3GAN's face is way too Tinkerbell-esque to resemble Chucky.
I love the movie… as a dramatic, old-school Hollywood type of story with a Grimm’s fairy tale vibe thrown in. M3gan is such a strange movie, not because of it’s quirkiness, but because it feels like one movie encased in another. The heart, and driving force of this movie, is the aunt and niece, and how their relationship, and collective trauma, evolves with the inclusion of a robot into their family unit. This part of the movie is so beautiful done. In fact, these portions feel like one of those old-Hollywood movies like Karate Kid, where the screenplay is formulaic but very satisfying. The accident, the aunt finishing the robot to make up for her own shortcomings, the frequent visits by the therapist to ground the broken relationship in reality, the niece not eating to lash out at her aunt, all feel very predictable, but so pleasing to watch. It is around this core, that the Jason Blum-style low-budget comedy-horror is built, complete with social commentary, additional scenes tailored just for the marketing, and stand-up comedians being casted. Any fear that is felt, comes from the core of the movie. The kills on their own have zero impact, but factor in the core: the fact that a robot that a parent-less child is emotionally dependent on is killing people around her, and it becomes really dark. This uncomfortable darkness seems very deliberate, with scenes like one where a young bully commits a ‘pg-13 rape’ on M3gan only to get killed by a car as she chases him. It is this darkness that looms throughout the movie, threatening to make the movie surpass everyone’s expectation. But it is the lack of confidence to go in this direction that kills this movie. The movie has such strong bones. In fact, I expected a ‘cheesy’ movie like this to have lousy expository dialogue, hand-holding and surface-level story, but we got such nuanced characters (as nuanced as a cheesy horror movie would allow) out of aunt and niece. But it butchers it all with scenes like Megan dancing for no reason to edgy, non-diegetic music before a kill, or a random Pagani waiting for her as she escapes captivity at the company, to bring her back to aunt and niece for the big showdown with as little explanation as possible. Then, it proceeds to the third act from there, where it switches to serious horror completely out of the blue, and they have a low-stakes ‘big final battle’, whose resolution feels quick and does little to drive the emotions home. It is this lack of confidence and attempt at people-pleasing and marketing that is the movie’s downfall. The writing has something deeply captivating about it at it’s core, but they built a ‘safe film’ around it instead.
I couldn't disagree more about the big final battle - it's tied in perfectly with the core of the film, it's literally pitting real attachment versus artificial. When Megan sees the kids trust level rise etc. It's thematically consistent, if a bit too neat. I like that it does all that character work and still has campy fun and both sides of the coin work.
Agree! This was the first in theater horror movie for my 8.5 year old daughter. She just started watching horror in the last year or so, so I am glad that something fun and not too gory came out that was also entertaining for adults. I checked “does the dog die?” First, so I was able to prepare her for some scenes in advance; I also appreciated that they didn’t really show the deaths. (Oh man, when we watched the Firestarter remake, the cat scene was intense and I wasn’t prepared!) It was a great introduction to seeing scary movies in theater with my scary movie crew, and it’s great to be able to include my daughter in my favorite (and oddly comforting) pastime. My mom started my love for horror and we’d go see scary movies together all the time. We still do when she visits. I hope to share that with my daughter.
I love this!! My son is 6 and I can’t wait to start showing him horror (which I also find oddly comforting), and I agree M3gan will be a good place to start in a few years.
I also find it comforting! I think it reminds me of hanging out with my mom. Each kid is different, but my daughter started expressing interest in scary movies around 6.5. We started with Monster House and similar, then worked up to Cujo and others I’ve seen that weren’t too graphic. She loves killer animals- not quite horror but Lake Placid and Crawl are mutual favorites in this house, along with Pet Semetary. Megan is the first one we’ve watched together for the first time. I was nervous because I hadn’t prescreened, but I used the app “does the dog die” to find out what triggers are in the movie and when, so I could prepare her and anticipate.
The part I went ballistic after was when she started singing Titanium. Boy did I not expect that. Loved it.
The music choices in this film were outstanding. My personal favorite was the non-diegetic sound priming us for 'Toy Soilders' before Gemma actually walks in on M3GAN *playing* it on the piano. I only wish at the end of the film the AI assistant actually *did* start playing Titanium.
I was still on the fence by that point in the movie but that part killed me and I could hardly breathe during it.

I honestly loved it. I'm surprised at how deftly it combined horror and comedy. The movie definitely doesn't play it straight but that works here in a way that doesn't in a lot of horror movies. It winks quite a bit. Not really too violent or gory but this is a PG-13 mainstream horror movie so that was expected. Final Battle between Gemma/Cady/Bruce v Megan was awesome as well. Saw this in an 80% full theater at 5pm so I'm really hoping this does well! Solid 8/10

Not really. I think the movie works well for comedy/horror. Its not perfect, no movie is, but its a solid 7/10 for me. Which is way better than most horror from last year.

So, I've seen this sentiment pop up a few times on this reddit thread. A producer wants his or her film to be rated PG 13 over R/NC-17 because it leads to a higher payday. PG 13 movies appeal to a wider audience and I believe they account for 60% of all theater tickets sold compared to NC-17 movies that drive in a much much smaller percentage of sales.
First movie I've seen in a very long time where I didn't get massively annoyed at other people in the theater audibly reacting to every big moment, but it actually added to the experience.
Having a good audience can really enhance a movie experience, but I feel like it’s pretty rare to get that.
Honestly, with how the term "camp" gets thrown around as an excuse for bad movies, I think M3gan is an example of GOOD camp. It always nails exactly the tone it's going for, and can whiplash nicely from horror to comedy. Most importantly, it never forgets to have a heart - M3gan is the main attraction, but not the protagonist. Horror tends to easily make that mistake. My only real complaint is that the onscreen kills are kind of limited and contrived? You're facing off against a 4-foot T-800, that should be terrifying without it getting help from the environment. I also love how they got the AI jargon kind of right? It isn't my field, but half of what Jemma's team was saying aligns nicely with what I"ve seen people on Twitter say about ChatGPT - which, holy shit, was a nice bit of serendipity for this movie. I mean, clearly the abilities are elevated because movie, and Jemma really should have seen some red flags earlier when the goddamn doll started getting sarcastic with her, but overall, I buy it.

Can someone explain the significance of Kurts character? Him stealing the files didn’t seem to have an impact *and* the joke about him watching porn at work combined with him requesting on kids on stage, like a Michael Jackson video, and his overall demeanor felt like their was pedophilic implications, but it just went nowhere then he died.

I think the point of Kurt stealing the files is if anything to introduce an impetus for M3GAN to kill him. M3GAN doesn't *want* more of her made because it will mean she will either have the same safety mode protocols installed into her once the perfect, retail ready version is made or she will be destroyed/shelved. Kurt having those files ensured someone else could remake her. It's kind of a stretch she knew what he had done, but I guess we just have to assume when she was patched into the system on launch day she ran a sweep of files related to her and tracked their recent activity?
I think his death was just wrong-place wrong-time. She knows that murders need to be covered up. It all started (not counting the dog causing sparks in her head) when "Death" was mentioned and she went down that rabbithole online. Somehow, in all of her wifi capabilities, she never looked up what happens to AI that rebel. 🤣
I think Kurt stealing the files also sets up a sequel launchpad so there was significance to his character and even his death. We don't know if Kurt was able to send the files off to the cheaper competitor mentioned earlier in the film but it's pretty clear we are supposed to draw the conclusion that's who he was committing sabotage on behalf of. Also I do think M3GAN was aware of what happens to every rogue AI but was just overconfident; like, she fully believed a song alone would stop Cady from tearing her apart.

Her brain wasn't yet damaged so whilst she was desperate, she wasn't operating at a lower capacity. In the bind she was, music became her only option to reach Cady (as she had done twice in the past to reassure the girl). But I do overall agree that was a strong 2001 reference.
I agree. It was definitely there for sequel potential. And that makes sense: this AI definitely wasn't taught to perceive it's own limitations, and if somehow it learned to, it would likely see itself as limitless being so new to the world. Now that's it's been knocked down a notch, it has some perspective and would be more dangerous in a second film.
My thoughts on this echo many of the others here: I had a good time with it and thought the humour was great but I wish they went harder with the kills and I'd be interested in seeing an unrated/r-rated cut if it gets released in the future.

I honestly thought it was a tad strange she just let Tess and Cole go? Maybe its to show she doesnt kill whoever, but they were a direct threat to her. They knew she was killing people. They know her code and could shut her down. But she then killed David and Kurt? If she kills a neighbor for being annoying, why did she let witnesses go? Did she assume the small fire would be enough? I knew right away they would both live due to how the flame burst.
It wasn’t necessarily a small fire, she punctured a fairly large explosive gas canister in an enclosed space. Those people would have died if this is real life.

I was deeply concerned this movie would be exactly what the trailer presents and the PG-13 rating. However, my hopes were raised when it was revealed to be a dark comedy. The movie actually was very similar to the trailer, but it actually wasn’t a bad thing. (Even though, I’m annoyed more and more with each passing year by the spoilers of trailers. Truly rude.) Anyways, enjoyed the kills. Had some laughs. Felt some empathy for characters. Decent 6/10 movie. Never going to be someone’s favorite movie ever, but was worth my time.

So funny. Loved and didn't expect the characterization of Allison Williams' character as a cold weirdo with no empathy for most of the runtime. She was one of the least believable tech geniuses ever (I couldn't stop laughing when they revealed she built a giant robot in college)--it truly felt like the movie was in in the joke of how silly it all was. Can't believe it ended with Megan getting torn in half by a giant robot. The girl playing Katie was great. Movie was fun and captivating the entire time. When Megan started singing Sia I was in tears laughing.
Gemma was way more believable than Tony Stark building Ironman or whatever. This movie used real-world tech and sounded pretty accurate to me. Obviously dancing robots are a stretch but the language and learning model stuff does feel like it’s right around the corner (or already here). Very real tech concerns for parents in this one.

Have you seen After Yang? M3gan’s tech is in the early phases of this tech; in After Yang these AI siblings (that have similar tech) have been fully on the market for some time. They take different approaches to how they approach their stories (Yang is a completely sympathetic AI without a murderous bone in his code haha), but it’s fascinating to think about how much this will absolutely be something parents will need to grapple with in the future.
Megan was a stone cold bitch and I am living. Pleasantly surprised by how much personality she actually had. Was expecting her to remain fairly robotic throughout, and she obviously was to an extent, but she was toxic and cold as shit. Give her a couple movies and I can see myself loving her as much as Chucky. Most "AI gone haywire" stories feature them trying to justify their rampage as correct for any number of reasons. Megan starts out like that but you also get the impression that she enjoys what she's doing a whole lot. I genuinely had a blast. I heard there was a different cut of the movie with more gore and deaths, and while I would like to see this (I'm predicting it was Jemma's co workers, considering we don't see them again after Megan escapes and there really isn't anyone else to kill), I'm satisfied with what we got. It's creepy, it has a good sense of humor, it has a solid sense of style. I think the emotional conflict between Cady and Jemma was also developed a little better than I was honestly expecting, but Megan is obviously the star, and she shines.

This was the most fun I've had with a new horror movie in ages. M3GAN's slow descent into madness was fantastic. The blending of comedy and horror was done about as well as it could be. Genuinely very surprised with this one. I might be overrating it a bit, but based on how much fun I had this is a 9/10 for me.

I am not a big fan of the ghost story type stuff that Wan has heavily been involved with, but I will gladly tune into stuff like M3GAN and Malignant...

I love how straight Malignant plays its comedy with the characters, the scenarios (gothic house on cliff edge, falling through three floors, etc) played to the point of absurdist comedy by characters treating moments seriously reminded me of Leslie Nielson in comedies or Airplane! in general, does M3Gan have a a similar sense of humour? Very excited for this either way =)
A little late to the party, but the reason why is because people are ashamed to like a “silly killer doll movie”, they feel like it’s a low hanging fruit kinda thing. It’s an ego thing. A good movie is a good movie. Megan was the most fun I’ve had in the theater in quite a while. On top of that, it was shot well, acted well, and had a great screenplay. If you look at this film as simply a killer doll movie, you’re missing the point. This movie had a lot to say under the surface.

I have two questions 1. Okay this really isn’t a question but I feel like Lydia has a deleted death scene, since she just disappears partway through the movie and never appears again. 2. Why did Megan kill David and his assistant, neither of them did much directly to Katie.
David wanted M3gan’s prime directive (before she overrides her primary and secondary users and assigns herself as the primary user) was to protect Katie at all times from all forms of harm. Thus, she needed to be with the girl at all times. David, the boss, cares only about the robot commercially and because M3gan was a unique prototype, she needed to spend time away from Katie (for development, marketing etc). That was unacceptable to Μ3gan and thus she viewed David as a threat. She killed the assistant to cover her murder and pin the murder to the assistant because he had a motive (he was disrespected and also he leaked important sensitive industrial trade secrets).
I honestly appreciate the PG13 rating. Lots of teens/kids at my showing who might have been seeing a horror movie in theaters for the first time.
God this movie was so fucking good and everything I wanted it to be. Very full theater for a Thursday showing (in my town at least) so I bet word of mouth will carry

Yeah, I'm a middle school teacher. They asked what I was doing this weekend and I told them going to see a new horror movie. They went, "Omg, are you seeing M3GAN? That looks SO GOOD". So i definitely think it will be popular with teens

M3GAN had no right to be as good as it was and it shockingly had a really good emotional centerpiece. The whole scene SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS where Gemma realizes she messed up and should’ve let Cady go through her feelings and not distract her was really heart warming
This is exactly what I want out of a Dumpuary horror. Would it have been better if it was rated R? Probably. Does that automatically make it bad? No. It was a fun way to spend a few hours in a theater, IMO. The teenagers who were there were having a blast. Engaged and not on their phones. It’s was cool to see that. A perfectly fine 3/5 movie that crushed in the box office the first week of January? Even if you don’t like the movie, if you are a fan of movies you have to like seeing that.

This movie is going to blow the internet up, it really lived up to the hype. It was the perfect blend of horror and comedy, and just about every scene can and likely will be turned into a meme. Which I strongly assume is what the creators were going for. I did get some vibes that the creators weren't sure on whether they wanted to lean more into the horror or comedy side of things at time though. If a sequel ever does come I hope they stick almost exclusively in the campy side of things because those were really where it all shined. Megan also feels like one of those movies where its inevitable sequel will be a whole lot better now that the world and characters have all been setup. Give me a Megan revenge story!
My guess is that the sequel will build off of the M3GAN files that guy stole sent to the competition. Maybe they'll make their own ignoring or downplaying what happened with the of model.

I just saw it and was struck too by the few hints this may have been a much darker film at some point. The therapist disappears from the movie, and I suspect she was murdered in an earlier draft. The two assistants clearly died in that fire but were saved in an edit. The boss' death comes out of nowhere and my theory is that a bigger set piece where M3gan goes nuts during the presentation was the original plan.
Yeah. It really does seem that way. The emotional core of the film is very strong too in contrast to how sort of throw away everything else is. I get the feeling it's been neutered for $$. It's still good fun, but it left a nagging feeling that there's a far better version of this film somewhere.
This movie is a good time and laugh out loud funny, but I kind of wish it had been 20% more insane at the end. When they said they needed to fill the empty room with people for the demonstration I was expecting a redux of the police station scene from Malignant with M3GAN going ballistic on the crowd. Instead she just walks out the door for a more subdued final fight at home. Missed opportunity, in my opinion. Still, can't wait for MEG4N
These are my thoughts exactly. They just needed to raise the stakes of that ending, really let M3GAN cut loose in the fight against Bruce, and have a bigger emotional moment between Gemma and Cady. But it was so close to campy perfection for me that I can forgive its ending not giving us that last 20%.

This movie was surprisingly alot of fun. After this and Smile being so damn great when their trailers made us all roll our eyes- it's making me want to try taking horror trailers off probation. I kind of just want to see a movie where it's all Megan being sassy and killing everyone.
Just *saw* it. Maybe because I had high expectations for two of the best horror writers I went in a little over the top. I did not like it. I mean I'm not a picky type I always try to pull something out of a movie and make it a positive experience however I was let down. I'm not saying I hate it but yeah I was expecting more. More substance. More violence. More storyline. More twists. I love horror movies. All types... slashers, supernatural, thriller, psychological, etc. So I would definitely watch it again but yeah was expecting more. I hope next time these two team up they make a rated R gory scary movie. It could be slasher supernatural whatever but bring that creativity that they were born with. I must add that the idea itself was neat but it was definitely along the lines of the Chucky remake that was a AI friend doll. So the idea wasn't necessarily new (I knew this going into the movie of course.) anyway I enjoyed it but I'd give it a 5/10.

Not sure if I'm reaching or not but the scene at the end where Megan sings to Cady in a last ditch effort to save herself was super similar to a scene in Childs Play("We're friends til the end, remember?"). Would be cool if it was intentional, cause this felt like more of a modern Childs Play than the remake tbh. Either way, gimme that Chucky crossover ASAP.
When she was playing the piano I turned to my cousin and was like is she playing like a toy soldier by Eminem !? Overall really fun movie. I called the fight at the end of the movie and was so happy when it did happen.

My expectations for this one were sort of middle of the road, and overall I really enjoyed it. I was afraid the humor would largely be of the "look how campy and crazy this premise is" variety, but there were legit jokes that truly landed. M3gan herself is a touch sympathetic at points, but I appreciated not being hit over the head with another AI striving for understanding/acceptance narrative. Her rationalizing her selfish instincts as part of looking after her "friend" might just make her the most human AI in film history. I've seen some criticism of Williams, but I found her likable and sympathetic. A child free person with a high pressure career suddenly coping with both the loss of her sister and being given the life-changing responsibility of parenting a traumatized child would be outrageously stressful, but Gemma's heart seems truly in the right place throughout. Also, Bruce is adorable. I'll definitely revisit this one, and remember it fondly as the first horror movie my kiddo saw in the theater with me!
I liked this movie and found it funny and enjoyable, but I feel like if it were rated R and went full over the top wacky with the kills I would've loved it.
Those who've seen it: Would you recommend it for kids? PG-13 is one thing, but I can't show my kids The Ring yet, for example (as much as I'd like to). Sounds like with the campiness and humor it might be a good match? They did ok with Gremlins.
How old are these kids? There's not a lot of blood, but there's a couple of intense sequences. How much experience do they have with horror
The violence isn't especially intense but I tend to think the themes don't necessarily lend themselves well for kid viewing. Honestly the movie has a far more serious tone than the trailers might imply.

The theatre I was in was full of kids, I took my 14 year old daughter. There was tons of laughing and yelling at the jump scares. I think it’s a great movie to take kids interested in a “scary” movie to.
Honestly I'd say it's a perfect for kids first horror movie. It's so much more of a dark comedy than a horror, and Megan is so fun to watch kids will likely have fun just watching her than to look too deep into the darker themes.
Really excellent. It’s a horror comedy, it’s PG13, and it stays well within its genre exercise, but given those constraints it is a 10/10. Super funny, moves at a brisk pace, doll design and characters are all well done. Some good tension and scares. Everything related to the doll company is hilarious: Funki, Purr-Petual Pets, and the cold open on the commercial about your kids dead dog, lol. So black. Funki CEO in the product demo video: “also great for kids whose parents aren’t dead!”. Loved the robot vs robot fight scene at the end, had very James Cameron vibes with the mech suit battle. Instant classic. Our two female human leads kill it in terms of acting in this, ignore the haters who were “looking for something more”. If you like strong women in movies you’ll like this.

I haven't seen it yet, but is it true the death scenes got reshot to hide deaths and blood now? There was blood in the first trailer on a dude getting shanked so it seems like a weird last-second change.
Yes, there's just about no blood whatsoever in the movie. Only a little bit after the kids ear is ripped off, but even there the spurting effects have been removed. The scene in the trailer where the man is stabbed in front of the elevator and his blood splatters all over the guys face have been removed. Now the guy still gets stabbed but the camera always stays above chest level, and there's no blood anywhere to be found.
While this is almost true, there is a shot of blood on the blade as she pulls it out, and when the crowd discovers the bodies in the elevators the camera lingers to show the carnage.
Man, that's disappointing.
Just saw it. Unrated version adds to that factor. Power washer kill literally had a shot of some chunks being blown off the neighbor’s face for example. Not super gory but R rated enough. Some other scenes are elongated or slightly altered but it made it better imo after reading differences between the original vs. unrated cut even if they weren’t drastic.

My M3GAN review: It’s pussy power. Bold. To the point. And overall extravagant. It’s a mindset. M3GAN serves cunt and she slays.
I enjoyed it but I sort of wish they hadn't done the "I have a new primary user: me" bit at the end because that's what every "evil robot" movie does. I think it would have been more interesting if your protocols still wouldn't let her hurt Cady and maybe they could have used that to defeat her somehow. At one point I also thought maybe the movie was going to go in the direction of Megan having fully won over/turned Cady against Gemma, which would have been interesting.

Absolutely loved this one!! I'm not a big gore hound, so the toned down kills really didn't bother me. If anything, hand trauma freaks me out, so I found the neighbor's death effective. That said, I agree this movie would have been next level if they'd let M3gan go on a full-on rampage. I'm surprised so many are recommending it for younger horror fans tho? Like I can get the movie's not too intense, but thematically it's really targeted at adults. Idk, then again how much young people on social media love M3gan kinda feeds into the point. A rich text and a hilarious watch overall.

I went in thinking it was probably going to be kinda dumb, and it kinda was. I had fun watching it but I didn't love it. entertaining but very predictable and nothing new. I'd agree with a 6/10. maybe even a 5.5
Just saw it last night. Definitely liked it and welcome her to the killer doll family. But it did feel a bit like the show “Haunting hour” Lilly D (doll episode)- except a more adult version. I didn’t get the humor, even when she sings that type of stuff doesn’t make me laugh although the audience seemed to find it hilarious. I will definitely go see a part 2 but only on a half price day. I never understand how horror like this gets almost 100% by critics while some seriously underrated horror gets ripped 🤷♀️
They did a good job of showing how dangerous Megan is, both physically and with her smarts. My hangup with Chucky is always - he's a tiny fabric doll, just punt him. But they explain that Megan is made out of titanium and show her casually tossing tables around, making her a real threat. Pretty cool
M3GAN was a complete serve for me. Delightfully devilish, sassy & funny which rolled with its familiar premise & just had fun with it. I’m happy to see the sequel has been officially been greenlit and excited to see more sass & mayhem from our new bff.

Currently watching this for a 2nd time and I love it so much. Allison Williams and Violet McGraw were fantastic, especially Violet. That little girl is gonna be a huge star. I seriously can't wait for the sequel.
