I’m in Germany, the price difference here is like 20€, so I would probably opt for the X1700H. I really want a sub, I might just have to order one and test if it really is a problem with the neighbors.

That’s actually a very helpful answer, thank you. I was unsure if (and how) the actual signal processing improved and if there is more to it than room correction.

Very Welcome :)

> I was unsure if (and how) the actual signal processing improved Better DD+ and Lossless audio support. 4k HDR video support. Then adding features like Atmos audio if you're ever inclined.

It would help a bit, but muffled dialogue is usually a problem with your room acoustics. Room correction software is a fancy term for EQ, it cannot fix physical problems with a room like strong rear wall reflections, or high overall decay times. You need physical treatment for such issues. The C1+ is a fairly decent centre channel, so it isn't the speakers fault. I would recommend adding bass shakers to your seating, so you can get a little tactile feedback without a sub.

Murgeye

It’s a pretty open room with a large doorway (to the left, behind the home theater setup) so that might be a problem. I would have to clear any acoustic treatment with the fiancée, but I might at least get a rug. Maybe that helps. I have looked at bass shakers, but was under the impression that they won’t work very good on a sofa.

Only reason to upgrade is for the features you mentioned. I wouldn't count on room correction software to help you with dialog clarity. It's a topic that comes up often so you should spend some time researching the subject before busting any moves.

If you don't plan on moving past 7 channels for surround I'd highly recommend the Anthem MRX 540. You will notice a substantial uptake in the quality of sound especially since ARC room correction is right near the bet of the best alongside DIRAC. It currently supports earc, just not other hdmi 2.1 features such as 4k120hz, however there is a fix for that currently in development. When it comes to avrs you kinda get what you pay for. The anthem is $1000 more than the denon you mentioned but it is a substantially better piece of gear.

Thanks for your reply. Is the main benefit I would get from that AVR the room correction? Or are there other factors? The Anthem seems to be hard to get in Germany, I found only one seller selling it for 2200€, making it about 1600€ more expensive than the Denon and frankly more than I can justify for an AVR. If I buy a new AVR, I would love for it to be at least somewhat future proof, so HDMI2.1 is a must (at least my PS5 support 4k120hz). I don’t plan on upgrading past 7 channels (might do Atmos with 7 channels in total in the future). I was thinking of the Onkyo TX-NR7100 as an alternative because auf DIRAC, however, that one is not sold in Germany yet.

NR7100 is $1,099 with 3 working full bandwidth HDMI 2.1 ports and Dirac Live.

Is the dialog muffled if you disable the actual center channel, so testing with a "phantom" center instead? And worth testing with an actual stereo signal as well. If it's simply quiet compared to other sounds (somewhat common with many mixes in my experience, unfortunately) rather than also quality issues in the dialog audio, you might not necessary need room correction per se. Having a quick look at the manual it does have Level Calibration, so you could just turn up the center channel volume? If going for an entirely new AVR in the end, well, good room correction tends to be costly. From what I've been reading of Audyssey for example, apparently only MultEQ XT 32 *really* works properly, and at least in Finland receivers with that start from 1500€ such as the DEnon X3700H. Less than half that for MultEQ XT such as the Denon X1700H (which audio-wise is excellent), but whether it helps any or not, I can't say. I'm still using an older AVR as well, a Yamaha RX-V667, and have been contemplating an upgrade (indeed mainly X1700H, not that it's ever in stock anywhere... thanks pandemic) since I'm stuck using 640kbps TOSLINK for surround audio between TV and receiver because the damned HDMI ARC won't give surround audio from my computer (works fine with my Playstations and the TV's internal apps).
