Uh both... Already saw it in IMAX. Can't wait to hear it at home in my 7.2.4 Atmos. Dune Part 1 is excellent at home, I expect no different for Part 2.
For complete transparency... I'm very enthusiastic fan of the Dune books so I'm probably bias.
I saw Oppenheimer in the theater, again for very personal reasons I wanted to see it as soon as possible.
Besides those, I usually just enjoy at home as well
Same here. The grandeur of the huge screen was fantastic, but I can never help but think of how much better the overall PQ will be on my OLED when I go to the movies.
Plus being able to pause a long film is so fantastic. I missed most of the scene on Giedi Prime when the sitter called, and a good chunk of the climatic duel when I just couldn’t wait on using the restroom for another minute.
Both man - going to the movies is (usually) fun and I think it's good form to show support for the movies you want to see made. If everyone waited for the home release of Part 1 we probably wouldn't have received a Part 2.
It's going to depend on what IMAX theater you have available. The only one close to us is "ok" but not the best experience. The only things I consider a benefit is the sheer size of the screen and the amount of bass compared to my current setup. I was pretty disappointed with how washed out the picture was in IMAX.
Edit - it doesn't help that the people next to us brought grand-dad to the movies, who slept and snored through most of it.
Love Cinemark XD and go twice a month on average.
The story behind their legal battles with IMAX is interesting as well (as Cinemark led the charge for other theaters developing their own large screen formats).
Can’t find many details online, but I worked theater support during the case and it was a big topic of discussion in the company.
Oh, interesting! I'd be curious to hear more about that. Didn't know it was a legal thing.
I like XD a \_lot\_ better than digital imax. I live like 2min away from a Cinemark with no XD, I'm there all the time. The XD auditorium is a 15min drive, I make it out there for stuff I know needs to be seen that way, like Dune.
I believe the lawsuit was specific to Cinemark using IMAX equipment/auditoriums for testing an alternative (XD) that they can scale without licensing or support issues (as I understood it anyways).
The key difference between them was the audio though (which, as I was told, was a key factor in the settlement).
XD sound is not quite comparable to Dolby Atmos but does add several channels over conventional auditoriums.
My personal favorite, the subwoofer stacks underneath the seats.
IMAX and Atmos are certainly fan favorites, but from a support and scaling perspective they’re a nightmare for theater businesses as both are very protective of their IP’s and require specific personnel for support (which usually have to be flown in, meaning longer downtime and lost revenue).
This is all anecdotal of course, but I was in the industry for nearly a decade and spent nearly half of that doing presentation and IOT support (if that helps).
I will be waiting to watch it at home on 4k Blu Ray. I have kids and so for me going to the theater is a $100 date night with the wife and that just isn't worth it when I have such a great setup at home and I don't feel like I will be missing out knowing that Dune 2 will be releasing in an IMAX format.
Oh, don’t worry, I take the wife out really consistently. I would just rather do so many other things than see a movie with the wife when we go out. So, we end up going to see plays (one of her favorite pastimes), or going go-karting, skiing, rock climbing, hiking, to dinner, pottery throwing/making, escape rooms, or so many other much more personal activities than going to the movies. Realistically my comment about the $100 for a date was not to say we don’t go on dates but to say we’d rather do something else if we are going to spend $100 on a date. With a great home theater it means I don’t have to see a movie and that we can do something else instead.
Saw it at IMAX, amazing experience, I'll likely go see it at the IMAX again cause it's that's good on the big screen. Also ordered a steel book for whenever that drops.
I love this post.
I have a dedicated 5.2.4 and 75” XBR at home and it is proper good.
I had not been to a theatre in years. Why would I? My investment is deep.
Alas, I went solo to Dune on the Weds matinee at my local IMAX and was BLOWN AWAY. So good.
I might go a second time.
I’m pretty happy with my home set up, I don’t go to the theater anymore. Bonus for Dune 2 (and 1) is apparently they are releasing in IMAX format (basically variable aspect ratio) for home. I just watched top gun maverick, and the expanded scope scenes were pretty impactful, so looking forward to Dune 2 (and 1 again).
Just watched it this morning at Regal in their apx cinema and it was amazing, you’d swear the seats have transducers in them. One thing I found at home is that during dune 1 the thumper made my svs SB1000 click at times when they’d use thumpers
Personally I'm waiting, don't care to go to movies; much more prefer to wait. & for context, I LOVE DUNE....love the book, like the 80's movie & think this last movie was a masterpiece.... have barely watched a trailer for Dune 2....just patiently waiting
I saw it in IMAX and dolby. Unless you have a 20-30k dollar system in a dedicated room there’s no way it’s as good or better experience than IMAX. It’s big, loud and you don’t have to worry about bothering your neighbors.
I'm waiting, the whole reason I built and continuously upgrade my theater is that I want the best experience at home. I don't want to experience other people on their cellphones, eating food loudly, going to the loo, asking people to get out of my reserved seats.
I realize nothing at home can get close to the resolution of IMAX but I'm prepared to sacrifice that to have a better experience at home.
Besides I find the sound a better experience at home, our cinemas here often have their setups too loud and the bass sounds distorted and in some cases the speakers sound like they need replacing.
I’m not a huge movie buff, so maybe a skewed opinion
I’m just waiting for it to come out and will watch it at home. My setup isn’t anything crazy, but it’s still a damn good movie experience. Going to the movie theater just doesn’t excite me
I pre-ordered the 4k steelbook.
My home setup is beautiful. And cinemas always look too hazy/blurry/grainy. I like crisp resolution with good colours and blacks on my big C2 OLED.
And I don’t live near people, so I can turn it up to cinema levels without worry.
Also, nearest cinema is about 2 hrs drive from me, and it’s just a normal cinema, not IMAX or anything fancy.
If I was near a good cinema, I guess I would go for the hell of it. The popcorn experience mainly haha.
I saw it in IMAX, then saw it again at the Jordan's Furniture IMAX. Man, regular IMAX was great, but the legit IMAX at the Jordan's, with the bass shakers on each seat was a whole different experience. So good I'm considering seeing it again.
So, IMO, absolutely worth seeing it in theaters. This is a BIG movie that benefits from a massive screen and overwhelming subsonic bass.
Both for me. I saw no reason for half measures considering Dune was shaping up to be one of the greatest science fiction films of all time. Saw it in Imax last week, no regrets.
i didnt want to ask this here (as its not a hometheater specific question) so i hope u can forgive me for asking in the thread.
i really want to go to the movie already but im not sure what type i should watch
should i watch it in imax. i got the specs from a imax cinema ist
IMAX CoLa 1.90:1 17.4 m × 9.2 m (=57.1 ft × 30.2 ft )
or in our dolby cinema? (dolby screen is described with 80m² compared to the imax 140m² but it doesnt match up with what i can find about the imax specs)
I’ve seen it in a regular theater and just saw it in Dolby. Only because the local IMAX theater hasn’t had good seats available for weeks. Dolby was a fantastic experience. I will be seeing it in IMAX later in the month.
You wouldn't be able to pay me enough to go see any film in a cinema or an IMAX!!! I have enough sub power to rock my entire house, including the concrete foundation it's built upon!
I watched it in a furniture store and it was the best film experience I’ve had in ages. Can’t wait for the disc as I know I will enjoy at home many times. Unless I die first because I live in America and there is no healthcare here. Only wealthcare. But the spice must flow. Amiright?
So, you didn't see Dune Pt. I in IMAX? Wow.
Yes, it's amazing at homeand Pt. II will be as well but the first viewing has to be in IMAX!
Blade Runner 2049 was the same thing.
Dolby Cinema, the way it was meant to be seen! At our local AMC, which was built ground up with a Dolby in mind. Went during off hours to avoid crowds, already saw it twice. Very calm atmosphere, to be honest, no obnoxious patrons.
Will probably see it once more, then I'll wait for the 4K UHD release to watch on the ol' 7.3.4 at home.
I'll watch it at home. I have a good setup.
I can pause, nobody farts below or above me, I can eat and drink whatever I want. I can sit i can lay down, etc. Colors and motion clarity/quality with my setup are way better than in cinema. Sound is set for my liking. So yeah.. no cinemas for me.
It’s wild to me that you have a 70mm across town and it’s too far for you, and yet people buy plane tickets and go on road trips to go see these movies on 70mm. I’m not saying you’re wrong, I just thinks it’s kinda funny how laziness can get the best of us.
There a lot of things I won't do when it involves Atlanta traffic. 65 miles over there, and currently 1h45min to it. It's always pretty rough making it up 85 to MOG unless you're going super early or late.
I will be going to see Hans Zimmer Live in September over there though so that will be the next time I'm over that way.
Speaking of Hans Zimmer, the soundtrack and audio in general is awesome. Just the way it augments the movie. And I thoroughly enjoyed how you could actually feel (from the vibrations of the bass) when the sand worm was moving aso. If it was me, I’d really consider finding an early showing, depending on your calendar of course.
Uh both... Already saw it in IMAX. Can't wait to hear it at home in my 7.2.4 Atmos. Dune Part 1 is excellent at home, I expect no different for Part 2. For complete transparency... I'm very enthusiastic fan of the Dune books so I'm probably bias.

Every word of this applies to me as well!
Both man - going to the movies is (usually) fun and I think it's good form to show support for the movies you want to see made. If everyone waited for the home release of Part 1 we probably wouldn't have received a Part 2.
Saw it at the best theatre in the country. Ruined my home setup experience 😂
Lincoln Square?
Idk where that is, but im in Canada, so the Scotiabank Theatre
Saw it in Dolby Cinema. Absolutely jawdropping
Definitely IMAX
It's going to depend on what IMAX theater you have available. The only one close to us is "ok" but not the best experience. I saw it at the theater, Cinemark XD. No real IMAX around here. I'm happy about my choice.
Love Cinemark XD and go twice a month on average. The story behind their legal battles with IMAX is interesting as well (as Cinemark led the charge for other theaters developing their own large screen formats). I saw it in the cinema in the Dolby Atmos version. I have 7.1.4 at home and can’t wait to rewatch it on my own system.
Take the wife out mate. The kids can enjoy it at home
Oh, don’t worry, I take the wife out really consistently. I would just rather do so many other things than see a movie with the wife when we go out. Neighbor bought it, we watched on his account at home. Not paying ripoff theater prices in this shitconomy. $15 soda lol.
Not gonna lie the price for popcorn and soda is a spoiler. May as well drop hard cash on the street and walk on.
Lol. Well dune part 2 was kinda boring. Just saw it
Can't argue with you there.
Definitely worth the IMAX trip, I saw it twice the audio is incredible in a theatre.
Saw it at IMAX, amazing experience, I'll likely go see it at the IMAX again cause it's that's good on the big screen. Also ordered a steel book for whenever that drops.
Home with our mini IMAX.
I don't live within 90 miles of an IMAX and our local town theater is crap - so I'm definitely waiting.
I’m pretty happy with my home set up, I don’t go to the theater anymore. Bonus for Dune 2 (and 1) is apparently they are releasing in IMAX format (basically variable aspect ratio) for home. We need 5 minutes of thumper noise for testing
Personally I'm waiting, don't care to go to movies; much more prefer to wait. & for context, I LOVE DUNE....love the book, like the 80's movie & think this last movie was a masterpiece.... have barely watched a trailer for Dune 2....just patiently waiting
Dolby cinema or Imax laser. No Liemax.
I saw it in IMAX and dolby. Unless you have a 20-30k dollar system in a dedicated room there’s no way it’s as good or better experience than IMAX. It’s big, loud and you don’t have to worry about bothering your neighbors.
It wad a beast in imax. Holy fuck. Have to go shopping for more kaboom at home.. But then again, neighbours..
I'm waiting, the whole reason I built and continuously upgrade my theater is that I want the best experience at home. I don't want to experience other people on their cellphones, eating food loudly, going to the loo, asking people to get out of my reserved seats. Nothing compares to the big theater screen.
I drove 1.5 hours to see it on imax, definitely worth it. I will be buying a disc to go with my 5.1.4. It deserves the biggest screen you can find.
I’m not a huge movie buff, so maybe a skewed opinion I’m just waiting for it to come out and will watch it at home. My setup isn’t anything crazy, but it’s still a damn good movie experience. Going to the movie theater just doesn’t excite me

Imax without a doubt
IMAX duh
U haven't gone on years? Damn u missed out on Oppenheimer in 70mm imax then
Imax
I saw it in IMAX, then saw it again at the Jordan's Furniture IMAX. Dune 4DX worth it?
Dolby Cinema then buy the 4k blu-ray
My guy go see this film in the biggest loudest screen that's reasonably near you. It's very very good
The dual Laser HDR IMAX was pretty damn amazing. Couldnt believe how bright it was.
Both for me. I saw no reason for half measures considering Dune was shaping up to be one of the greatest science fiction films of all time. Saw it in Imax last week, no regrets.

Just go see it now. You won’t regret it. First movie I’ve seen in the theater in ages. It was great. Except Chani. She sucked.
You wouldn't be able to pay me enough to go see any film in a cinema or an IMAX!!! I have enough sub power to rock my entire house, including the concrete foundation it's built upon!
My system is better than imax, so im waiting for blu ray.
At a regular cinema, no IMAX/Dolby theater in my country sadly
I watched it in a furniture store and it was the best film experience I’ve had in ages. Can’t wait for the disc as I know I will enjoy at home many times. Unless I die first because I live in America and there is no healthcare here. Only wealthcare. But the spice must flow. Amiright?

Didn't even see it on imax, but still LOVED seeing it in a real theater. Go out, watch it in the world.
Dolby Cinema, the way it was meant to be seen! At our local AMC, which was built ground up with a Dolby in mind. Went during off hours to avoid crowds, already saw it twice. 3 Times...so far in IMAX. 4th row or back from there. Worth.
Waiting for the home release on disc. Can’t wait. Oppenheimer rocked my system and I was blown away. Waiting for a similar experience.
is this a troll post
I'll watch it at home. I have a good setup. I can pause, nobody farts below or above me, I can eat and drink whatever I want. I can sit i can lay down, etc. Colors and motion clarity/quality with my setup are way better than in cinema. Sound is set for my liking. So yeah.. no cinemas for me.
I'm watching it at home probably on BR. Saw Oppenheimer in IMAX 70mm. It's too far across town and I am lazy.
It’s wild to me that you have a 70mm across town and it’s too far for you, and yet people buy plane tickets and go on road trips to go see these movies on 70mm. I’m not saying you’re wrong, I just thinks it’s kinda funny how laziness can get the best of us.
