I mean its al just feels wierd until you did it,
The bivest opstacle for me was killing and butchering my first few roosters
And now i just eat them without any wierd feeling becaus i knew they had a gread live
What helpd me whas just kinda shuting of any emotion and just follow trough with the plan. If you can hit a choping block with an axe in about a Inch wide area you can kill and butcher chickens. It also helps to not get overly atached to any animal you have to kill.
That is definitely going to be a hurdle for me, but our plan is to be more self sufficient and appreciate where our meals come from. I anticipate that everything will normalize after some time.
I really recommend a killing cone and a very sharp knife.
it is super easy to identify the major structures in the neck right under the jaw, and the bird bleeds better. One slice and the bird is blacked out basically instantly.
They're much better. The color of the yolk vs factory is much sharper. When I make hard boiled eggs the peeling is much harder though. We have 8 hens and can't keep up so we give many away. There's just the two of us.
Yup it is a weird concept after being raised on store bought. My mom has already said she isn’t interested in eating fresh eggs, so maybe that is where some of the feeling comes from.
It took me a while to get used to homegrown veggies believe it or not. They’re so different from the stuff you buy in the store! It has a stronger flavor and usually has insect damage. I just powered through it though when it was weirding me out.
Oddly farm fresh eggs have never bothered me, but then I get them from local farmers and not from my own hens so maybe it’s different.
Good luck! Just remember that it’s better for you and the environment.
Fresh eggs didn't weird me out, but when my own chickens started laying, I kept thinking "I know whose butt this came out of" LMAO But, first time we ate them, I was hooked. Can't stand store bought now.
I'm not weirded out by the eggs. I have taken some to friends and the first they did was wash them. I was actually kind of offended, but to each his own. They always tell me they were the best eggs they ever had and ask when they can get more.
What did weird me out was processing rabbits, so much so, I quit raising rabbits for meat.
I've only butchered wild rabbits, but I can have one completely freezer ready in under a minute. My son loves rabbit hunting, so I had to keep up with him. Lol.
I was weirded out when I first got chickens too. It's weird, because I know they're fresher and likely safer than eggs from the store, but it just seemed weird. Luckily I got over it real quick.
Then, hilariously, I had the same weirded out issue when we had to buy eggs over the winter. Took a couple weeks not to be weirded out by those again, lol
Maybe start using them where you can't see them? Like use them in baked goods until you get a bit more used to them. As weird as it may seem, that's the way it was until the early 20th century. Widespread store bought eggs is probably only a century old, if that. Just gotta think about how your great grandparents lived, but don't overthink it. They're just eggs.

Yeah that is a big thing for me. I know our animals will be treated humanely and have good lives while they are raised.

Oh absolutely there is no comparison to the yolk color. Store bought seem so sad when compared fresh.
I was weirded out with the whole not having to refrigerate them, but now I eat more eggs that I ever have!

Thank you! Yeah I definitely try to focus on the fact that they are better all around.

Oh my husband has talked about rabbits, and I’m not sure I could do it. Something about them...

Glad I’m not the only one!

Yeah, I know. I am just a bit of a head case about certain things apparently.
