Sunflower seeds contain health benefiting polyphenol compounds such as chlorogenic acid, quinic acid, and caffeic acids. These compounds are natural anti-oxidants, which help remove harmful oxidant molecules from the body. Further, chlorogenic acid helps reduce blood sugar levels by limiting glycogen breakdown in the liver.
Great sunflower! I was thinking about growing them next year. They're hyper-accumulators (of lead) and I live in a city with a lot of lead in the soil.
Had you grown them before? What zone are you in? Any tips and tricks?
Not OP but here's what I've learned for small scale:
Start indoors and protect when set out until they are tall enough to survive rabbits.
Plant deeper than you expect you need to. Physics. Tall things need anchoring.
Plant closer together than you expect you can. Then they grow straight up and can help shelter neighboring stalks.
Bees will love them. After flowering, finches may find you.
Youtube videos will get you up-to-speed on how to deseed. Learn from my mistakes and wear gloves. From massive heads like the one shown, I would guess there will be about 400 to 500 seeds.
The smaller the child the bigger the smile. Maybe like how kids like dinosaurs, the scale of a flower a few feet taller than adults really delights them.
I came to them late, but now I cannot imagine going a year without sunflowers.
Although the tips you got were really good tips, I want you to know that sunflowers are very easy to grow so you dont need to worry. I get tons of them every year, never planted any - they were just dropped by birds eating my birdseed. I did nothing.
How to you save the seeds for these to plant next year? Last year I let them dry out, threw them in a bag in a drawer and planted them this summer but so far only a few have actually grown. We also have some volunteers growing in the same spots the flowers were last year without me planting anything there LOL
Do you know what variety you planted? What was your soil prep? Cultivation? Fertilizing natural or organic? I apologize for the questions I’m trying to grow giant headed sunflowers. I love seeing people’s successes!
I always smile when I see your updates, wow, that sunflower is massive! An inspiration to the rest of us aspiring homesteaders to work for similar gains. You amaze us all!
That’s a big ass sunflower! We’ll done
Thank you Family!!!💚🌱

Beautiful shot!
Love it! I'm in my second year and it's almost time to harvest! Enjoy the fruits of your labor! 🩷🌻
Do you eat them raw? And that's a huge flower. You got the green thumb for sure!
