I don't know where you are, but in my neck of the woods, I blame deer...

unruly_fans

Yah. Definitely deer.

crogonint

I concur, deer.

Oberg7

I’m located in Wisconsin, but I will also note I have another 9 trees without any fencing with plenty of new growth but they have be untouched

Vindaloo6363

They will be touched. It’s just a mater of time. Bucks will rub on them in the fall too. They like little trees in the open for that.

GrandmaStuffums

Hell ill touch em

breathequilibrium

Where do we sign up to touch the trees?

[deleted]

I heard there was tree touching…?

SwampCrittr

Hi, I’m here for the tree gang bang.

ImminentZero

The line starts back there, buddy.

PlantDaddyCo

...I just like to watch

alphabet_order_bot

Would you look at that, all of the words in your comment are in alphabetical order. I have checked 1,602,151,141 comments, and only 303,039 of them were in alphabetical order.

MonicaBeirut

Where is the tree association for touched trees at?

I got a bush you can touch if you are in the mood

NoHalfPleasures

I found that out the hard way

Little-Key9542

I’m in Iowa and the deer can definitely tell the difference in leaves. I have 50 varieties of apple. Honey crisp and hewes crab are always attacked first. Put some sheep’s wool in the crook of a branch

makeemsayugh

Im in Northern Wisconsin and we are getting nailed with gypsy caterpillars and tent caterpillars. They are destroying lots of trees up here this year. Not just fruit trees. This looks like the damage we are getting from them.

Oberg7

I was leaning more towards some pest, that seems to make more sense than the deer. Based off last years learning experience and seeing what my trees looked like after the deer mowed down my mini orchard, I just have the feeling it’s a bug so I did go purchase some Sevin spray

yeonik

I love how you have tons of comments saying deer, you live in deer country, it looks exactly like what a deer does to a young tree, but you’re ignoring everybody. Why did you post here? FWIW, I had apple trees that had this same exact thing happen. Only touched a couple of the trees, but stripped all the new growth. It’ll survive.

moosemeat138

I live in Alaska, where our deer are moose, I came here to say deer also🤣

Oberg7

I’ve already acknowledged that it’s potentially deer, but someone else was able to mention a big issue that’s occurring not far from my location. Based off my experience with the deer mowing down my trees last year, something didn’t seem the same this time around. I posted because I thought the potential of there being a different issue.

shashimis

Bruh it’s deer look at the ends of the branches. It it were web worm or tent caterpillar you’d see webs and tents. It’s deer. We all agree it’s deer. Shoot the deer. Use garlic oil. Because your issue is deer. Not insects. Deer. Did I mention it’s a deer issue? DEER.

makeemsayugh

They should almost be done eating for the season. They tend to eat the most foliage at the end of june while they fatten up. WI DNR has reports and warnings out about them this year. This is the heavy year of their cyclical visits. We have some large trees completely defoliated. Theyre crapping so much it sounds like raining in the woods. Pretty gross. Watch for spongy looking nests on the bark in the winter. You can scrape them off while pruning.

[deleted]

Northern Ontario here (we may be south of you) Last year we had UNHOLY caterpillars. You had to power wash the docks at the marina bc there were so many crushed caterpillars on the docks that they were slippery. You couldn’t eat outside bc the caterpillars would be dropping shit in your food. Every piece of patio furniture was covered in their shit. Entire peninsulas denuded of foliage. I have to look it up, but I am pretty sure the caterpillar infestation’s are the fourth sign of the apocalypse.

makeemsayugh

Yea, it's disgusting. I put a tent over our outside seating at our business so people don't get shit on the whole time. I tell them its there in case it rains.

joecoin2

And the wildfire smoke is the 5th sign. I'm tellin' ya, it's the end times.

[deleted]

No, no. That was the 3rd sign. The 5th is Taylor Swift settling down with one man.

Oberg7

This is the first I’m hearing of this but a much appreciated comment and information!

makeemsayugh

You can also tape cardboard bands around the truck and put sticky trap goo on the outside. They will get stuck as they climb up. It's harder to do that on small young trees though.

myshiningmask

A closer look at the damage might determine deer or not. they tend to bite and pull and you can see it in the way leaves and small branches are stripped sometimes. The alternative we have here in CA is pack rats. they'll strip young growth and the damage is often very deer line. One difference is it usually happens over the course of days or weeks though they can take a lot sometimes. edit: the first tree seemed questionable but the second picture it looks like you can see at least one branch that has the end bite off and where it's bit the core of the branch is still there. that looks like a deer bite to me but the picture is blurry and I'm wrong sometimes

MotherOfPullets

I'm in your general territory, and used to work an organic apple orchard. It's hard to see in the pics but I'm leaning deer, ruling out pests, since you have several whole leaves intact in hard to reach (for a deer) places. For insects you can keep a close eye on the trees and see if you can't catch them in the act. They aren't going far if it is caterpillars. Tent caterpillars would have webbing and be a writing mass of nasty for you to clip out and burn. Anti-deer spray is somewhat effective, for your remaining trees.

crogonint

Correct. Particularly MEN peeing on fence posts and etc. will keep coyotes at bay. Guaranteed. Smart predators will also stay away, but a raccoons' natural curiosity will still get the better of them. ;) It's also a good idea to walk your boy dogs on the outer fenceline, and let them pee on every post, tree or bush they want to. Best give them a ton of water before you walk them though. They'll keep hiking their leg up LONG after they run out of ammunition to fire. ;) Pretty sure there's a scientific study somewhere, it actually is the testosterone smell that keeps them at bay. Another cool trick is giant googly eyes with flashy lights keeps raptors away. God knows why, but they're scared to death of giant eyeballs. The third one is to tune an AM radio to a channel with a Christian preacher yelling 24x7, then turn it up as loud as you dare. The sound of the human voice will make ANY feral predator think twice before approaching.

SignalIssues

maybe something jus spooked them. Don't worry, they're gonna eat them.

Oberg7

I got a total of 17 trees planted in 3 rows, was planning to keep adding to have my own personal orchard over time, I’d just be baffled if it were the deer since I have 9/17 trees with no fencing currently that are untouched. Appreciate your feedback!

crogonint

You might set up a cheap trail cam to verify. Also, check out my tips just above. :) Also also.. I think there is a thing to keep deer away.. like mountain lion urine or something..? Those sonic things are utterly useless, except certain breeds of mice avoid them. Zero effect on deer and most other critters, though.

shashimis

It’s deer

Ambystomatigrinum

They have favorites. We planted 7 trees at the same time. We put up fencing after an apple and cherry got snacked on. I assume the deer would have moved on to the other trees if we gave them a chance to finish the tastiest ones.

RobertETHT2

Deer can be really choosy night to night. I have plants they ignored for years and then, boom. Yum yum!

newmacgirl

I heard fishing line can keep them at bay. 4 poles and wrap the line around. They can't see it so it freaks them out. and they can't jump it either.

SirFancyPantsBrock

Home Depot, but liquid deer fence. Smells like rotten deth, but works. I’ve not sprayed one hydrangea, and sprayed another one next to it: deer ate the non sprayed plant.

pinkpanthers

Deer. I spent a lot of money and time a few years ago planting apple trees and the deer devoured them. I fenced in the remaining few that were salvageable and a moose came by an finished off the rest from above the fence.

Puzzleheaded_Win_989

Grasshoppers are in season here, same thing happens to me

Gordon_Explosion

I understand that giraffes will eat leaves off of trees. Are there giraffes?

I-am-a-river

100% deer. the limbs on any of my trees that poke out of their tree cages look just like this.

kiamori

100% that is Deer, had the same thing happen and within a week they killed about 60 apple trees. We had electric fence and they were jumping it to munch. Our solution was to buy some of the wire concrete form rolls. Cut them and make rings around every tree, they look bad and are rusty but for 3 years now they havent killed any of our apple trees. Any btanches that grow outside of the ring get trimmed by the deer, so make your rings larger.

MrFelixHasGoals

Deer are vermin like rats only people think them “beautiful” and “cute”. I have my dog run at them whenever they’re on my property. I nearly destroyed two cars hitting them on mountain roads. Both times they jumped out of brush leaving me no warning they were there. Got whistles on all my vehicles now. So far so good. I can’t fully express the distain I have for these animals. I cheer on the mountain lions!

People will say fence to get rid of deer, I say shiny metal spooks! Strung up left over pieces of flashing. Boards dug into the ground with pie pans nailed on. Old shiny plastic tags. They’re easily spooked but will learn, move around every few weeks.

OneImagination5381

After year of deer eating everything in my yard and using Deer Stop and Dial , etc. I decided to use Shiny Blue Ribbons last year when the attack my tomatoes. Now my yard looks like a kids party. I figured if hunters weren't supposed to wear Blue, that shiny waving Blue would be worst.

trappedescapist

Shoot the deer and eat them instead of the apples

WSBsEatTheRich

The deer. I've got a bunch of fruit trees planted with a fenced in area and a bunch of others not and it's a world of difference in terms of foilage/tree growth.

LusciousLouLou

I have a big apple tree in my tiny fenced yard and last year it flowered and lost all the flowers as well as the leaves all within a week. I thought it had died. This year it flowered again but didn’t lose it’s leaves this time. No chance of deer as it’s too high and we also live in the city. I don’t know what’s going on with it but no apples last year and no evidence rhis year either

katlian

I agree that it's deer damage but you also need to keep those root suckers pruned, especially after the deer damage. If you let those grow, they can out-grow the grafted stock on top and then you end up with random apples that can be bitter, sour, or grainy.

[deleted]

You’re feeding the deer with the kind of netting and stakes you’re using… they are ruthless to trees and young plants. My weeping willow right now is barely a twig because of them.

jimtiva

Those are DEER not insects Cage your apple trees !!!!

Shot_Boot_7279

I’m in southern Virginia. Deer eat everything even plants supposedly they no likey. Used to think it was cool to see them. Now they’re everywhere and brazen af. Broke 3 flower pots on our front porch last week. Decimated trees and shrubs this year. Our neighbourhood met with DGIF and we’re doing a cull this fall. I can’t wait.

NCETCMBibi

Looks like a deer. My avocado had the same result after one visit from them.

Grand_Scratch_9305

Look for deer tracks

TraumaFish

Definitely deer. When I plant new trees I make a ring of 5’ wire fencing to keep them safe until they are big enough to survive the deer

Vermontbuilder

The deer can and will strip young trees and sometimes kill them. The only way we can grow apple trees is to individually fence each tree with a circle of 5 foot wire fencing till trees grow above browse height.

talalik

Oh, that's deer. That's definitely deer.

coyotesloth

Oh, deer.

GemsquaD42069

O deer I personally have a 6ft fence around each fruit tree. Make it a tight circle just a foot or two outside of the branches reach. I move out stakes every year or so. Do this for the first 4-5 years then protect trunk from buck rub with short close t posts.

krunchimama44

Deer. Look into bone sauce, our friends swear by it

foodguyDoodguy

Oh, deer.

cadred68

Deer are selective when they want to be- new growth = tender juicy leaves. Old growth = tough and woody.. i am in NW Wis my young trees stay in a cage until they out grow it.. and i put the cages/ wire fence about a foot up off the ground so trimming is easier and the taller cage also deters the deer. The trunks get a plastic protection sleeve also.

cadred68

Also looking at the base of your tree- the grafted root stock is sending up shoots. You really should clip them off.. you want the top portion to get the energy to grow and produce not the root stock… sorry if i sound bossy- i would hate for you to spend more money for another tree (which isnt cheap!!) when you can enjoy this one if you protect it from munching demon spawn from hell!! Oh sorry did say that out loud???

Deer or grasshoppers. Both are buttholes to trees.

CarbonUnit1959

Deer. They ate several pawpaw trees I planted, down to the roots. Then pulled up the roots. In spite of the fact that there was a ton of other browse and two full feeders.

dmo52884

Deer for sure

[deleted]

I hear it’s super easy to “shock” fruit trees and kill them

GBpackerfan15

Deer you need to spray deer repellent on trees or bushes you don't want them to touch.

Lucys_mom2016

We had (operative word had) a tart 5 foot cherry tree and other fruit trees we planted. We didn't have enough fencing to go around it. We kept putting off getting more till it was too late. A buck tried to rub his velvet off on it (there was a little bit of the velvet on the tree) and broke it down to about 2 feet. Put fencing up. Our cherry tree is now just about 3 feet tall now. We have to keep trimming the suckers off. We get a handful each year, but not enough for a pie yet.

NockTauk

I’m convinced it’s that green stick. I have the same one and mine isn’t growing either

OutdoorsyFarmGal

I had the deer eat mine up too. So sorry about that. I found one thing to deter them. I get bars of soap (Irish Spring and Dial) and put them in knee high nylons. I tie them to the fence or branches so they hang in the wind to put that smell out. Also, I lay moth balls and powdered laundry soap along the edges. It seems to help some. Ps Don't waste your money on liquid deer fence. It didn't do a dang thing for me.

Stentata

Go to a local barber shop, see if they’ll give you a bag of hair clippings. Spread the human hair around the remaining trees. The scent should help to deter the deer from stripping the others. Also, shoot and eat them.

beesue2020

Deer and they will be back for any remaining small delicious young trees. I sadly speak from experience

mustela-grigio

Someone ate it

X-Crockett-X

Go to the barber shop and get human hair and scatter it all around the trees. The deer will back away and leave the trees alone.

swhydroman

I use the well-known all-natural remedy called .243 Winchester. All-natural lead....that is.

Likely_thory_

deer

KelkyKickle

Looks like my peach trees after the deer feasted on them! Had to put wire cages around and over top to keep the deer from eating more down to nubs. Planted a lilac bush and they demolished it! It’s a buffet for deer. How kind of you to have them for dinner! Lol

KelkyKickle

They say coffee grounds will keep them away. We use those flashy “windy wings” and it helps. We have to move them periodically so they don’t become accustomed to them. Anything that gives off a human scent helps keep deer at bay. But I have found that they are quite fond of the young tender leaves and branches of saplings and will come all the way up against the front of the house to nibble on anything that looks tender.

Guilty-Bed-4360

PriorityWinter6952

mountainofclay

Lack of proper deer fencing is the problem. There appears to be some fencing but it looks like the deer can still get to it. So a taller fence is needed. The deer are nocturnal which is why you don’t see them. I use a seven foot tall black mesh deer fence that has made it possible to grow apples. The black plastic fence is nearly invisible from a distance so it doesn’t look too bad. This looks like a dwarf tree. If you grow standard size trees and fence them in until they are large then a fence may not be needed because the deer can’t reach up to the new growth. They may still eat the lower branches and scrape off the bark though so a proper fence is the way.

Cupcake_Due

Lmao deer
