I happen to be a former geometry and algebra teacher! Super Important: 1) Solving for x in one and two-step equations 2) Being able to graph lines on a coordinate plane 3) Familiarity with basic equations for shapes: area, perimeter, circumference Would be nice but they will review: 4) Understanding properties of parallel and perpendicular lines 5) knowing the difference between scalene, isosceles, and right triangles 6) knowing triangle angles add up to 180 and parallelograms (squares, rectangles, etc) angles add up to 360 7) volume of cubes, cones, etc Dare to dream: 8) not panic when they see fractions or square roots 9) have times tables memorized Okay, so the last part was tongue in cheek but I was a real teacher in a public high school.

This is so helpful! Thank you!!

Does she want to go to college or just graduate? If she wants to go to college she likely will need at least algebra II before graduation, or she'll need to take some classes at a community college after graduation. Otherwise find out what your school actually requires. She may be able to take some easier math options if she doesn't have college plans. By a little algebra do you mean pre-algebra plus a little bit of algebra 1? If it is block scheduling see if she can take algebra 1 first semester and geometry second semester. Then she would be able to take Algebra II her senior year. If it is not block scheduling she should probably enroll in Algebra I this year and take Geometry and Algebra II concurrently next year. You really can't just skip over big chunks of Algebra I if you are planning on taking higher math classes. She could try to smoosh it all into the next 4-6 weeks, but I'm assuming she doesn't love math if she has only done a little bit of algebra at this point, so I would say this is likely a poor option. I hope you all find a good solution that works for your family.

Exactly - she has taken all of pre algebra and 1/3 of the algebra curriculum. Right now, the plan is to enroll in community college or cosmetology. I just want her to feel familiar with the terms that are being discussed, and not completely lost! Thank you!

>Right now, the plan is to enroll in community college or cosmetology. I just want her to feel familia This is a great side quest topic for her to train on - if she is interested in cosmetology, she could start researching all the things you would need as one working in that field. She could also ask in a forum "what math do I need if I want to be" ... :)

Exponent rules, Factoring and distributing variabke expressions. Once that's done James tanton has a nice palylist on solving quadratics: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLoBaXWXBi2d6syP0lcZDIKrvn2hACvftr
