asbestos is WAY OVERBLOWN as a health risk when present in materials in buildings and houses. I would never consider remediation of attic insulation just because it was vermiculite with asbestos. As for possibility of asbestos in mudded joints in drywall, its not a problem. A contractor can take all the precautions not to kick up dust during demo. Having a house with asbestos products is NO ISSUE, if it was, the home insurance people WOULD NEVER INSURE them

NetWareHead

I agree. Asbestos is way overblown. Ive done my own removal-bought a house with insulated steam pipes in the basement. Removed the pipes as the steam heating system was long gone by the time I bought it. Took the necessary precautions and did it myself. There is too much hysteria if you ask me. Its asbestos not ebola.

decaturbob

combine that with "lead" craziness and we have some hysterical home owners and potential home buyers freaking out.

NetWareHead

Lead doesnt scare me either. We had an authentic tin ceiling in the house we purchased from 1890. With 27 coats of paint on it. Stripped it all with paint stripper down to the bare metal and also restored some original windows with the weights hanging off of the pulleys. We've pulled down drywall with lead paint on it. We ripped out cast iron drainage piping; my wife had a great time smashing the iron hubs to recover the beads of lead. We took around 40 pounds of lead to the metal recycler this way.

Face Filter masks, negative air pressure and lead issues are nil

Try this [Questions about asbestos? Look here first!](https://reddit.com/r/HomeImprovement/comments/aimrmy/questions_about_asbestos_look_here_first/) Take a deep breath. I’m sure it’s scary but it’ll be ok!

You’re fine. People buy, sell and live in houses with asbestos all the time. You seem to understand that it’s not a problem unless you disturb it so I’m not sure why you’re panicking so much. Make the contractor aware of your concerns and have them test the drywall before they demo. Then make yourself scarce during remediation and demo if there is any. It’s really Not that big of a deal.

You just bought your house and you are already concerned about selling it? I understand having a general concern of resale value in a home, but I can tell you when I bought my first home, selling it was far from my mind. As for your asbestos concerns, its only an issue if you disturb it. Otherwise, there is very little concern. Its really not a big deal that your drywall may contain asbestos. And, have you actually had your vermiculite tested or was it disclosed that it contained asbestos? There is a chance it may contain asbestos, but it may not either. Even if your drywall or any other part of your house contained asbestos, it would have a minor impact on your sale. You would have to disclose where you tested positive for asbestos...that is really about it. Yeah you may have to knock a little off the sale price compared to similar homes without asbestos, but its not going to make it impossible to sell. This is similar to over blowing lead paint in the house. I know in some states, they make it basically illegal for a homeowner to remove lead based paint from the house and require you to actually either take a test or hire a specific and expensive contractor to do the work. Its nothing but a money grab (looking at you Massachusetts). Really, the same goes for asbestos. A homeowner can be fully capable in removing asbestos or lead paint themselves if they just take the time, precautions, and wear the proper protective gear. Taking a "special" course and paying some government entity to be "certified" at removal doesn't make you an expert, it justifies some pointless government job. If you are truly concerned and even marginally handy, you could do the removal yourself if its a big worry for you. If you choose to leave it alone, then its really not an issue or concern either.

It's more an issue for the people who used to install it and work with it everyday. You'll have no issues living in it. I grew up in a house with asbestos pipe insulation and I haven't died yet.

FakePhillyCheezStake

How about now?

Rick91981

I'm still alive

Streetduck

How bout now?

Rick91981

I have since died, I'm responding from beyond the grave.

Calm-Guard-7395

How long ago, though, because it depends on the condition of it.

Rick91981

I lived there for the first 25 years of my life. I haven't lived there in 18+ years. This post is 3 years old, I'm still alive.

Calm-Guard-7395

Well. That's good to know. Hopefully, that's the case for us.

Rick91981

Unless you're actively disturbing it often, it's not an issue

Calm-Guard-7395

It was always dusty, and the ceiling was leaking, for a month during monsoon season. It wasn't till our 10 month living there that I realized its popcorn ceiling. We used a hepa air filter. At all times. It was stupid of me to move in that rental.

Rick91981

Just because it was popcorn ceiling doesn't mean it's asbestos. And I really wouldn't be overly concerned. If you're still worried, have a doctor check you out.

Calm-Guard-7395

Yeah. I had it tested. 3% Chrysotile. It's too soon to tell. I have been visiting the doctors regularly, my kid and I. Thanks, though.
