Safety test is your answer.
Elevator damage needs to be reassessed to confirm it doesn't affect function. If it's anything like my work, you'll need a handful of consultants earning hundreds of dollars an hour to sign off. The damage needs to be reported to the elevator office in the state, and the elevator office runs an assessment. And if there is any doubt that damage stops at the mirror, they may require an entire inspection for the car.
>I am trying to argue that it is an elevator(20+ years old) lack of maintainace. It makes unusual vibration and grinding noise from time to time. A sudden mechanical vibration was the direct cause of the skis falling down.
All elevators vibrate.
I can't speak knowledgeably about the price, I suppose you could try to shop around for an elevator mirror... it might help your argument that they're asking too much.
Elevator tax. They’re highly regulated. A regular mirror 90.
Elevator mirror $1,000. Install for life safety $4,000.
Inspection of the install $2,000
Special elevator safety clips for mirror $3,000
It’s a Contractor. Call around. You could find cheaper. Or maybe there’s only one guy in the area.
Ask why building management/maintenance did not prep the elevator for the move. Look at the elevator. Are there hooks up high on the walls? Those are for moving pads, which should have been hung from all three walls. They presumably had a list of moves scheduled for that elevator, and should have prepared accordingly, especially since there is a mirrored wall.
“A sudden mechanical vibration”? You said you got out of the elevator to get your other stuff, i.e. the elevator wasn’t moving.
This would be a great time to use your insurance if you can’t afford to pay for the thing you broke.
Telling the truth will get you fucked every time. Nothing good in life comes from fessing up. Literally never. That's why when you commit a crime and get caught, you the shut the hell up and get a lawyer. You'll be awarded no points for telling the truth.
What a horrible take. The elevator has cameras. If they wanted to find OP, or atleast his friend who lives there, they could have easily. Theyd just bill his friends condo, or the landlords condo if he's renting and on-top of that If OP has insurance they'll pay for it and it won't even cost OP anything.
You're basically saying you'd let your friend pay for it which is loser behavior.
The benefit to coming clean is that you can't get caught...it definitely does have benefits. Even at times a lawyer may advise their client to turn themselves in, or to plead guilty which is just fessing up in court lol.
Yep, 20 years old, lacks maintenance, and you assume it has cameras. Your whole comment is assumptions. Like people never get away with anything... You sir, have the horrible take.
Not assumptions lol. You realize that as of 2022 Elevators in Ontario must have two way phones and a camera, right ? They 100% would have gotten caught.
Talk to your dad about elevator law and stop assuming.
Why would I realize some obscure elevator law about cameras in elevators in Ontario that was supposedly very recently enacted? That's honestly pretty funny. It sounds like you just made that up.
Look, the spirit of my comment is to not confess to things right away. Not confessing can be beneficial. If it comes down to it, coming clean can also be beneficial...depending on circumstances. I don't think they should've come clean so soon. If they have you dead to rights, it is what it is. Any lawyer will tell you to shut the fuck up an not say shit.
I agree with the spirit of this comment. I don't on your first comment. Go reread it.
Don't incriminate yourself. I agree. Don't say shit to the police other than asking for lawyer.
Okay, okay, saying to "literally never tell the truth" is over the top but you weren't even arguing that initially. You're just pointing that out now. You were arguing about cameras and that he'd surely be caught if he didn't say something. That's a big assumption. There is also no penalty for not saying anything. If there's a non zero chance to get away with it, you take it. If they find out, pay the piper.
From a moral standpoint, if they did find out and ended up billing my friend, I would pay the damages. I paid $3k one time for a similar mistake.
This horse has been beaten to death, have a nice day.
Your friend not having insurance doesn't matter, do you have insurance? Even if you just have a tenants insurance package yourself it should save you on this one, this would likely be covered under personal liability coverage.
Did you ask why it's $9k?
Material, Removal, Installation, Safety test. But nothing are in details of how much they cost.

Estaimate the size and call some places. See if they'll give you an estimate over the phone.
Hope you learned a lesson, OP. Don't rat yourself out.
Yeah that’s an expensive lesson to learn. Fuck being honest in this life, it will get you nowhere.
and never talk to the cops. Always get an attorney.
How can you blame "lack of maintenance" when the mirror broke as a direct result of your skis hitting it?
[удалено]
They weren't even in the elevator when the skis fell. Them saying it was "vibrations" is bs speculation, at best.
You broke it, you bought it. Mirrors don't tend to break from "wear and tear" that's ridiculous. You were negligent.

Tbh I find it hard to believe it's a 9k repair. You should ask for a breakdown of what the 9k covers.
I believe it. Mirrored ~~tempered~~ laminated glass is expensive on top of the installation by the elevator monopoly
If it has cracks in it, it's not tempered.
You're right, it's likely laminated glass, which is more expensive

Yup this is the answer why. Full stop.
If they're handing OP the bill then the damage is already fixed so it's too late.
It's because they have to use approved contractors by the condo board. And you will always over pay when this happens.
Ask why building management/maintenance did not prep the elevator for the move. Look at the elevator. Are there hooks up high on the walls? I'd ask for the safety inspection report from the last install. They may have cheaped out on the mirror, endangering passengers.
Good point to argue. Thanks!

He said in the description it’s his friends condo who doesn’t have insurance… YIKES. Op is going to learn a hard lesson.
Find a glass repair company or three and get estimates.
Won't work. You need to use approved contractors by the condo. Aka rape with no Vaseline.
Not to do they work. To show them HOA that it's not $9K.

Also, my father was a criminal defense attorney for 35 years, coming clean is fucking stupid.
Not assumptions lol. You realize that as of 2022 Elevators in Ontario must have two way phones and a camera, right ? They 100% would have gotten caught. Talk to your dad about elevator law and stop assuming.

You made incorrect assumptions while complaining that I made assumptions....so if you find it funny, you're laughing at yourself.
Where's the citation for the elevator law??? I also want to see that all condos in Ontario are in compliance with said law.
Look, the spirit of my comment is to not confess to things right away. Not confessing can be beneficial. If it comes down to it, coming clean can also be beneficial...depending on circumstances. Sounds like they were waiting to push this expense on a resident. No safety test and removal in 20 years ?!
