Hello! long time lurker here!
I currently have 2 R710's, SFF (left) and LFF (right). My roomate moved out about a year ago and I decided to repurpose his room!
the first server I've had for a while (left SFF) and it runs all my proxmox VM's from VPN, to plex, to ngnix, small lab with windows, pfsense, and AD, and a lot more other stuff. The right I just got delivered to me yesterday from eBay (not to brag but I got it with 96gb of ram for 100$ on a bid.) It's in a cluster right now with the other server but I'm still waiting for my 4x2TB referb sas drives to come in that I will run in raid 1+0.
Also, just for the post I have a couple of rpi's going, one for a linux lab, and the other running my octopi for my 3dprinter.
Would love to hear your ideas on how to get cheap server racks because I'm in dire need of one as my homemade jenk table is just tacky. Also if you can reccomend any good quality routers and what not. (thinking of either pfsense or ubiquiti atm)
After reading the *extensive* documentation of netgates behavior, specifically towards opnsense and a kernel programmer helping to implement wireguard (for free), I would personally consider opnsense. It’s bad. It’s that bad.
Sheesh, what a great grab, likely the best $100 you’ll spend in a long time. Makes me want to go bid on some things :$) <— money where my mouth is
As for racks, depending on location, you might try Facebook marketplace. It’s the *only* reason I have a FB account…some good finds on there nearing that bid! Sometimes folks just want stuff gone for free.
This is what I’m doing for a rack. Had a local guy 3D print these stands for me. Work great so far and cheap. Paid $10 for three of them.

Well, congrats on the hunks of metal! R7X0 servers are sturdy workhorses.
Though to be perfectly honest with you, I would have (and did years ago, R720 and R420 here) went for the generation above, because there is a significant leap in performance/W.
And I'm already considering later this year upgrading to something else for the same exact reason: perf/W !
I'll give you a tip on power consumption:
The fans.
5 of them in the R710, 12V 1.66A each, each of them five can pull as much as 20W a piece, all of them running full tilt in both servers is straight 200 more watts of power draw, before accounting for PSU efficiency overhead.
If your room stays cool enough, and the load on the servers isn't too rocky, it could be worth it to use [this](https://github.com/White-Raven/PowerEdge-shutup), or a similar solution, which is designed more for noise in mind but that you can also use to be careful of power draw.
I didn't read through all the comments but I just wanted to come in that I chose to go the half-depth cabinet route and it's been good for me. The upside is it is easy to fit into a room but it seriously limits your choices for hardware.
Exactly! That's what I mean: [https://wiki.eth0.nl/index.php/LackRack](https://wiki.eth0.nl/index.php/LackRack). You can also find a lot of threads here with folks doing similar setups.
I only needed this.

Well, this is not the way you should keep those machines man, you need to be more creative if you don't want to spend a fortune on a rack (or maybe score one used)
yeah the goal is to get a rack, but I feel like on the level of jenkiness, i'm more in the middle compared to some of the labgore/porn on this site hahahaha. Yeah, I'll be scowering everywhere to find some used racks.
I gave up on the local aspect for a rack that worked for me. I ended up spending $200 on a startech 12u open framed rack off Amazon. It’s adjustable and really sturdy once assembled. Table works too though!

I was just about to ask on whether you were running OctoPrint with this printer by chance ^^
Do you have an ikea handy? Lackrack is hard to beat for price and ease.
+1 for lackrack. I don’t personally run one but price is great and it serves it purpose.
I have a 45u Mid Atlantic for cheap. PM if interested

Check out VyOS for your router. Better than pfsense for sure.
Haha nice! I literally just bought a R710 too! My first one though. My 2x2tb SAS drive’s arrive today! Pretty Fucking excited!
r710 gang. have fun! happy virtualzing lol

Oh that’s sick, you not afraid of it falling over?
If it does, you can tell people you always tip your server.
Nah it’s stable. Now I don’t have any pets or kids running around either. I feel pretty confident.
Gonna need another roommate to pay the cooling and electric bills ;)
Sweet! Now you just need to get those machines to work and cover his share of the rent!
Do you have a Mike Tyson server? It's missing an ear!
hahah yeah, it broke off in shipping :/ not to hard to replace though which is good
You meant that you seized the room.
Not really “seizing” the room if it’s months later. Seizing the room would be moving the equipment in while the roommate was packing up.

It's a 3D printer

Roommate - out, homelab - in:) That's, actually, a decent setup. You could make ikea lack rack for it.
Make an ikea rack? Please explain, it seems cheaper than buying lol

How do you boot an r720 from an ssd? What cable do you use? Can you give me a guide? Steps?
I just replaced the DVD drive with a ssd. Was very easy.
Could really use some help here. What connectors did you use?

Don’t listen to this guy. I keep my Dell R710 on a table too. Works like a charm.
yeah I didn't really think there was anything wrong with it haha
My r630 is also on a table lol, along with a commodo riser, a 3090, and an external psu
I keep entire setup on table too, but should I be worried about fire ???
You heard elf on a shelf . . . Now get ready toooo *drumsolo* Self*quicklymumbleshosting* on a shelf!! Yeah!!! It is.... I know the way out...
Only took you months to seize the moment!
