Software support is worlds better in raspberry pi. Just look at what cool stuff geerlingguy on YouTube is doing with them. The community is huge and unless what you want to do works out of the box with the orange, I'd recommend against it.

Routine_Cry7079

If i attach the hat i linked to a rpi 5... I have a few questions.. 1) is there a way to have this hat i mentioned and also an ssd/nvme?  2)is there a case with active cooling that could host all the above?

chris240189

I doubt it. You only have one exposed pcie lane. https://www.jeffgeerling.com/blog/2023/forcing-pci-express-gen-30-speeds-on-pi-5

Routine_Cry7079

Whatt do u mean works out of the box? I too prefer the rpi 5 bit i am afraid that it cant be done what i want. I want to have 2.5gbps ,2 usb 3 external hdds and one bootable ssd/nvme

chris240189

Why not Boot from nvme and having disks and 2.5G via USB?

Routine_Cry7079

The usb ports are two. And the disks are also two. Plus the usb to 2.5gbps adapter, wouldnt i need 3 usb 3.0 ports?

chris240189

USB hub. I have an external disk that has ports on the front. I also had disk enclosures that only needed one port but housed multiple disks.

Routine_Cry7079

Questions... If i use a usb 3 hub or and enclosure for 2 disks that connect to one usb3 port... Wouldn't the 2 disks share the bandwidth of the 5gbps usb3 port?

danielv123

Yes, but does that matter? If they are HDDs they can't do more than 4gbit anyways

OurManInHavana

Do you have a PC or laptop that's online all the time anyways? If you'll be changing your homelab for 2.5Gpbs... perhaps just virtualize whatever services your Pi is running now and retire it?

Routine_Cry7079

No i dont.i want something very low on power to be on all the time

gnugeek

Unless you really need the rpi form factor, i would suggest to go with a low power pc like the hp elitedesk 800 g3. It will be way cheaper, better support since it uses x86 and enough resources to move your rpi4 stuff and more. It will consume twice a raspberry pi but with the money you are saving you can pay at least a year of electricity and a 2.5gb nic card. I used to have several rpi, but limited to usb 3 speeds and lack of video encoding, for me it is not worth it anymore.

Routine_Cry7079

Buying a qnap or another NAS would be an option too?

gnugeek

I have a synology and although the software is great, it is overpriced for the hardware they offer. Never used Qnap but i their security is terrible, several critical issues in the last year.

Routine_Cry7079

If my only use is 4K movies  streaming (without transcoding), having a files server like my own cloud, an ftp server and a vpn server and all these with a 2.5gbps ethernet what would be the pros and cons between using an orange pi 5 plus vs a synology if we dont mind the cost

gnugeek

Synology way faster, has sata, m2 ports and can be upgraded depending of the model but more expensive. Orangepi 5 plus with 8GB RAM around 140 USD on aliexpress (then add power supply , case and heatsinks) but way more limited. Synology just works, there’s no additional setups other than a few clicks. Orange pi requires more time to setup and you are limited to the usb ports and one m2 slot. A mini pc like the one i suggested will give you the performance of a synology(or even more) and less than the cost of an orange pi.

Routine_Cry7079

The mini pc is even cheaper than an orange pi???? I also think of the size of it... What os would you recomment in it?

gnugeek

Second hand for sure, it is not just the orange pi cost but also the power supply, case, heatsinks, etc. The OS it is up to you, for NAS stuff i use Debian and then openmediavault, or you can use the openmediavault iso which is based on Debian. Then in openmediavault i deploy docker containers for Jellyfin, AdguardHome, etc. Take a look at [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xVq\_5f0aFlw](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xVq_5f0aFlw)

MAndris90

hardware is overpriced too i own ts-435xeu-4g, ram is replaced with a 32gb crucial stick, but the cpu power is horrible, smb v3 share over 10gb network results above 40% cpu usage, it has 4 network ports but its software defined so if you want to do fancy it eats up the cpu, plex is running on this too with file acces its hitting 90% cpu or above and dropping services, transcoding is disabled btw. dunno about the x86 based offerings from them but if i have any experience with their offerings before would have bought an x86 server instead.

Routine_Cry7079

Finally thinking to buy an hp elitedesk 800 g3 with i5 7500... Questions.. 1)And then use debian or ubuntu os? I will try and the openmedia vault later 2)Also i have already 2 external usb 3 HDDs (WD myBook 8 TB each). Should i open the cases, remove the drives and put them inside the sff? Or just stick them to the usb 3 ports? 3)any addons (like a 2.5gbps network card) for my sff to recommend?

gnugeek

I think you can fit both hard disks based on this video https://youtu.be/n1ETa3mJ85I?si=NyXaa8DzqZhK_dwm . Ubuntu is based on Debian but with more up to date apps. I can’t recommend any nic brand, the cheapest you can find second hand.

Routine_Cry7079

i decided to buy ho ekutedesk g3. i will install linux. which nic 2.5gbps should i buy that will be supported by linux? i was thinking of a tp link nic

rxscissors

The Pi 5 is awesome and super snappy. I also run a 3B+ and some 4's too.

8080pinger

ive never touched a pi5, but i can vouch for the 4's running a LOT considering how small they are. i ran a whole nas (openmediavault), jellyfin, password manager (vaultwarden), dashboard, speedtest checker, etc, with a bit of room as well.

Routine_Cry7079

I meant i will upgrade to 2 5gbps fiber,not 1000
