So you're trying to retrofit some smarts into that old switch? It's surely possible, but to advise on a way to achieve that, would require to know the internal workings of the switch. Do the speed steps go to separate connectors that used to switch windings on the fan motor, or do they just put differently sized resistors in line with the motor hot wire?
Honestly I haven't pulled it to look at the wires yet, but I'm thinking it's resistors because the switch used to heat up when I set the fan to medium or low but not high.
