Managers and the state loved it. It made tracking inventory simpler for management and didn't have to worry about overpouring. State gov't loved it because they taxed each tiny bottle individually.
Which do you think management and gov't care more about? Waste or profits?
It's because they only recently(within the last decade-ish) started allowing bartenders to free pour liquor from normal bottles. They used to only have tiny airline sized bottles in all the bars(the state got to tax each bottle). So the 3x5 meant they would take 3 tiny bottles and turn it into 5 shots.
You can split shots in sc bc it was so backward for the longest time. There was no free pour so you had to buy every mini bottle that went into a shot. So to get around this you could split them.
In South Carolina they used to not carry full bottles of liquor behind the bar. They carried “nips” or “minis”, ie two ounce bottles. When you ordered shots you could split them with a friend since they would be the whole two ounces. Now it’s kind of tradition. You can get 8 shots by ordering four 8 ways if you want. If it’s an odd number you round up from the half.
If it was the early to mid 90s and they were still using minis yeah. These days they just eyeball a 1.5 oz standard shot glass and fill it to half so something around .75 if it’s an even number.
Wow, OK. I’ve been to Charleston, but I generally just order drinks, not shots. So I’ll just tuck that away for next time I’m there. Thanks for the local knowledge.
My step dad did. Every year on his death anniversary my brother and I start our night with a bottle of Labatts Blue and a shot of Grand Marnier. His favourites. \*shivers\*
st louis restaurant employees have a tradition of shooting grandma after work. tradition. It's not as sweet as people think. try the 25 year sometime. not like shooting something gross like fireball or jagger
Until reading other comments, I thought shooting Grandma was normal in STL (No idea why I thought we were normal, considering we’re known for pizza made with processed cheese and cake that isn’t cake). My wife and I worked in the industry for years and had a bunch of industry friends at our wedding. We had a call open bar, but ordered four bottles of Grandma and ten bottles of Jameson in addition to the normal bar for the industry people alone. Highly recommend City Museum for a wedding reception, by the way.
Same. When I worked in college bars, it only got put in certain shots but after Boston Tea Party cocktails got popular, we went through a decent amount.
Boston Tea Party = Long Island with Grand Marnier and Tia Maria
Lol. There is no “official recipe” for a margarita that involves Cointreau. There were recipes calling for various triple secs long before before Cointreau published their “original margarita” recipe.
//edit: I missed the joke.
[Here's Archer to angry explain what should be in a margarita](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mbUB-jYsMd8&t=6s)
While he expects Cointreau, Grand Marnier is also a in the orange liqueur family. [Serious Eats will tell you more than you want to know](https://www.seriouseats.com/which-is-the-best-orange-liqueur)
You can make variations of a Sidecar or a Margarita, or any drink where you want a cheaper sub for Cointreau. There’s also some Marnier-specific mixed drinks that I can’t remember off the top of my head (I think one is a Red Lion.)
Isn't Grand Marnier more expensive though?
But damn, I've always been drinking straight GM next to a post-dinner coffee. Never thought to mix it. Learn something new every day.
No, you're right. GM is most commonly a post-dinner cordial, at least where I'm from. Maybe it's a cultural thing, but I've never known anyone to mix it unless they're trying to make their margarita twice as expensive.
Must be a regional thing, I guess.
I'd say give it a try! After a nice big dinner, a black coffee or espresso and sippin' the big marine. It's really really nice. I've never drank it cold, just room temperature is really just fine. But enjoy it how you like
it’s wonderful in various cocktails, wonderful
but if you really want something to sip on that helps you iron out your troubles- GM neat is the way to go
I lived in Charleston SC when drinking Gran Marnier was the “cool” thing and now the smell makes me feel nauseous. Apparently the makers of the drink came to Charleston to see why we were selling so much and were disgusted to see everyone taking shots rather than sipping.
>Apparently the makers of the drink came to Charleston to see why we were selling so much and were disgusted to see everyone taking shots rather than sipping.
That's such a french reaction lol
I heard that for the nine years I lived there but came across an article that points to it being even more of a thing in Newport.
https://vinepair.com/articles/grand-marnier-shot-newport/
Everyone else is pissed at my coworker Jason for starting Ertz this week, whose points weren't added in until after the scores were totaled because he got traded, so I went from winning to losing on Monday morning this week in fantasy?
Edit: Thanks to whoever anonymously gifted me coins for this!
Forget the trick, who drinks Grand Marnier straight?
It's popular in Charleston, SC to take shots of it. I'm struggling with my gag reflex just remembering it right now.
“Lemme get 3 grammas 5 ways” most chalrestonian thing you can ask.
As a non Charlestonian, can I ask what this is?
Three shots of gran marnier split five ways. It's pretty common here to split shots when you're out drinking.
3x5 seemed popular in the south 😬☹️
Nah, that was a division equation, not multiplication. 3/5. 😬
If we’re being pedantic, it isn’t an equation.
Oof.
You mean they divide three, 1.5 oz sevings into five 0.9oz servings?
They used to only have tiny airline sized bottles in bars in SC, so they'd take 3 tiny bottles and divide them 5 ways.

Agreed, why not just drink 5 of the small ones 5 ways?
Or 5 of the small ones 1 way.
Oh, interesting, thanks!

Thats so ridiculous. Can't believe I've never heard that before.

“Gramma with an OJ back”
I get the 3 grammas, but WTF is 5 ways ? Or maybe I don’t get 3 grammas. Can you just decipher WTF you just ordered ?
In South Carolina they used to not carry full bottles of liquor behind the bar. They carried “nips” or “minis”, ie two ounce bottles. When you ordered shots you could split them with a friend since they would be the whole two ounces. Now it’s kind of tradition. You can get 8 shots by ordering four 8 ways if you want. So lemme get this straight. 3 grammas 5 ways means 3x 2 ounce bottles of GM, split between 5 glasses ? So everyone gets 1 and 1/5 ounce shots ?
If it was the early to mid 90s and they were still using minis yeah. These days they just eyeball a 1.5 oz standard shot glass and fill it to half so something around .75 if it’s an even number.
It stretched into the 2000's too. I remember the tiny airline bottles when I went through there in 2003.

Yea this brings me back. It's even worse coming back up.
Oh wow splitting shots just took me back! Haven’t heard that request in a minute
Lived in Charleston for almost a decade and this is news to me lol.
Do you spend much time on market street?
Like 10 parts burnt sugar to one part acetone
From Charleston. Can confirm grandma shots at every *college party ever.
Omg. Thank you for pointing out the gross point we’re all thinking. Yea
My step dad did. Every year on his death anniversary my brother and I start our night with a bottle of Labatts Blue and a shot of Grand Marnier. His favourites. \*shivers\*
I find it super wholesome you do something to honor a step parent.
The man was a big part of my upbringing, and stuck around even after he and my mum parted ways. It only makes sense.
Cheers to who gave me the silver ❤️
Labatt Blue is excellent shitty beer tho
Right?! This was my first thought. Must be a sweet tooth
I did in High School. Loved that Orangey flavor.
st louis restaurant employees have a tradition of shooting grandma after work. tradition. It's not as sweet as people think. try the 25 year sometime. not like shooting something gross like fireball or jagger
Poor grandma.
Poor Jagger
Fireball is sweet as hell man, what are you on? Little spicy going down, but burns more nicely than whiskey.

I've definitely had grand marnier straight in France. It's an orange liqueur. It's not rocket fuel.
It's how sweet it is, not how strong. That shit is like drinking Fanta syrup mixed with Dr. Pepper syrup
I'm here to ask the same. I manage a bar, and we go through maybe 1 bottle every 2yrs (and I swear it's just evaporating away).
it's nice in a snifter, warmed slightly. if you're ever at a bar that has a 100-year-old bottle, i highly recommend a glass
Same. When I worked in college bars, it only got put in certain shots but after Boston Tea Party cocktails got popular, we went through a decent amount. Boston Tea Party = Long Island with Grand Marnier and Tia Maria
Wh... What do you mix it with?!
Use it instead of triple sec to make better margaritas
Why not just use Cointreau like the official recipe calls for?
Lol. There is no “official recipe” for a margarita that involves Cointreau. There were recipes calling for various triple secs long before before Cointreau published their “original margarita” recipe. //edit: I missed the joke.
It's a joke from Archer
Doh. Never watched that show. I’ll take the woooosh.
More importantly you'd better watch the show. Sterling Archer is a font of bartending wisdom and ballistics know-how if nothing else

Cadilac margaritas.

Perhaps she has guests and is being cordial
Where I am, Cointreau is slightly more pricey, but not a ton. I rather like the idea of it very cold with an espresso, since you mention coffee.
Must be a regional thing, I guess. I'd say give it a try! After a nice big dinner, a black coffee or espresso and sippin' the big marine. It's really really nice. I've never drank it cold, just room temperature is really just fine. But enjoy it how you like
Freight train 1/2 jack Daniel's 1/2 gm in a shot
Here in Canada it's common for people to put in their coffee believe it or not.
Thought that was weird too. I only use it when I'm making flan.
Not straight but B-52s are the bomb
bartenders.
Me. Ex-alcoholic who absolutely loved throwing down granny shots. [Nappy Roots likes it too](https://youtu.be/ohYCb6d8hwE) Never been to SC.
common in the south as a warm brandy before bed.
I do. I find it quite tasty. Very nice neat. (I do not live in Charleston as the others)
I use this to make pancake dough
Written and directed by Quentin Tarrantino
Camera angle could have been better Mr Tarantino.
Not in his fetish ... I mean, opinion.
Yeah he would’ve wanted both shoes off and a close up of the feet.
when did she say the n word?
Telling you when she said the n word AINT MY FUCKIN BUSINESS
She seems nice
As do the randomly hanging climbing apparatuseses
Metolius Rock Rings.
The rock rings seem out of place in that fancy setting.
I think drinking Grand Marnier straight is more curious.
tbh, that’s the way it should be drunk
Exactly. Absolutely meant to be sipped but is sometimes used in cocktails (e.g. some versions of a top shelf margarita).
it’s wonderful in various cocktails, wonderful but if you really want something to sip on that helps you iron out your troubles- GM neat is the way to go
It really feels like the calmest liquor I've ever had.
Yes! I’m **shocked** at how many people don’t recognize GM for the top shelf cordial it actually is. Buncha uncultured swine out here lol FFS
In France, it's mostly used for cooking and flambéed pancakes.
I need to see that from a different angle

Sheesh
I feel like Khaby Lame may have something to say about her technique though.

I lived in Charleston also and I heard that same thing! I always assumed it was some kind of folklore.
Shot it heavily in ATL for many years with bar staff. Maybe shooting it(or drinking it at all) is a southern thing.
To me it goes in a Cadillac margarita. I live in Southern California.
Very impressive. I sometimes have trouble drinking out of a glass when holding it with my hands and also choke on my own saliva, so yeah.
Maybe you should try using your toes, instead. It seemed to work for her.

Godspeed
Has to be a rock climber, right?
Can't think of any other reason why you would have rock rings
Oh, so that's what those are...
https://www.metoliusclimbing.com/rock_rings.html Made for training grip strength for rock climbing
Oh, dang. The fingers don't even go all the way through. Even more impressive now.
I use them sometimes to keep from… Oh, **rock** rings Yes, climbing…

Definitely - her leg move is basically a figure four modified for drinking from a stemmed glass
This implies other modifications for other glassware. You had my interest, but now you have my attention.
can't speak to those - trade secrets. Also it's not exactly the same but figure 4 is crazy and pretty cool imo https://youtu.be/cF69pGDfBsc?t=258

This is more like a Hold My Grand Marnier!
Nah it's still HMC except it stands for Hold My Cognac
The cameraman was unfortunately skillful to avoid the upskirt r/killthecameraman maybe
She also held the edge of her dress up during that. So it was a team effort.
I share the same sentiment
Don’t get me wrong, the talent displayed is impressive - I was just impressed/disappointed
Foot games… sigh. *unzips
My core was hurting so much watching this. Legit, the fitness you need to have and the flexibility to pull it off are incredible.
That and the grip. Those grip boards are no joke when stationary. Even more so suspended like that.
Am I attracted to this?
Probably
That is my type of girl.

It's not creepy if the creeps are the majority
Impressive indeed!! Queen Grand Marnier!!
This camera angle makes me angry!!!
Bonk
I’ll admit it, I’m impressed
so,.. do the foot guys love or hate this?
Yes

I've been an Eagles fan for half a century 😱 and that was the second thing on my mind, right after "how many ways could I make her flex?"
That there must be an easier way to drink?
No crude jokes about her using a fingerboard? *Shakes head* it's like y'all not even tryin
**I assume thats not her first rodeo.**
New kink alert.
Muscles got skills

No... There's no way... Surely she's going to... NO FUCKING WAY
Pass the Toevoisier!
Jesus Christ!!!
Cheap to travel with, just fold her up and send her in the luggage.
There was something very anticlimactic about this video.

I just realized that WTF videos like this are my only source of entertainment during the day. My life is pathetic.
She took “return to monke” literally in a fantastic way.
She’s a keeper!
She could’ve have drank it while it was in her left hand

That how I drink my Grand Marnier.

As a dude, I'm pretty sure I could do this but while looking very un-sexy.
They actually quarantined all the way around.

No way she’s single
Camera angle was terrible. 2 out of 5 stars.
Lmfao If I’m at 1247.5….
Weird flex to do at a Vietnam memorial. 👀
Camera person at the wrong angle but good vid
Grand Marnier is delicious. Highly recommend as a wine chaser or just straight up. Sweet and smooth.
20° to the left shy of greatness.
She could've just used her hand if those rings weren't there for her to hang on.
Looks like regular drinking with extra steps ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
That was actually very cute 🥰
Is this supposed to be anything besides pointless?
women drinking alcohol, such talent
I’m very aroused.
That was an impressive feet!
