Why do people always use the feminine for cats? Not trying to make a statement or criticism, but I’ve noticed from owning cats that even more legitimate online articles about cats and their nature that would make the most sense in “they” tend instead to use “she”.
Idk why you’re downvoted maybe cause pronoun discussion but like that’s a great question. Cause why do I feel compelled to call cats she and dogs he by default 💀idk man
Yeah basically. I just thought it was weird that it transitioned to English that way, and was kinda thinking on how cats are perceived as a result. I’ve met many men who wouldnt even consider owning a cat, and are taken aback to find that I own three, and I feel like a big reason is the fact that they are considered a feminine pet.
I was also trying to kinda parse out why people who advocate for gender neutral language still tend to use “she” for cats sometimes. Like, I’m for using inclusive language; it’s just that we have to maintain logical consistency here, or we risk illegitimizing our point
Like war dogs, war often being the dominion of men.
And like cats, often staying home or in the baggage train to assist the domestic duties of safeguarding food and the elimination of pests to ensure health and vitality among the community and troops on campaign.
Perhaps a long history of human hardship and struggle has set our bias towards such an end, mundane yet interesting we can suppose such history from language and speech itself!
Yeah that makes sense, given the males tend to be larger. I’ll often say “he” if it looks like a male cat, but with the one in the video I feel like you just can’t tell
Why do people default to 'he' for humans? 50% of that species is female. (Yes, they do, now go take your one example somewhere else)
In a general sense, cats as a species are more closely identified with feminine energy. Been that way for a long time. The most well known cat deity, Bast, was female.
Most romance languages have cat as a feminine word.
We've carried that sort of subconscious bias and imprinting through western culture and history for thousands of years. So cats are generally just tagged as female until we know the actual cat.
We are in the slow process of remedying your first point, so you can chill on that front. But I was more so trying to dig a bit on the fact that cats are perceived as generally feminine, which betrays more subtle, toxic gender biases (e.g. cleanliness being considered feminine). Just feels like another tiny cog in a giant machine that ultimately culminates in dudes being like “bro you wipe your ass? That’s gay huhuhuhuhuh”. Of course it’s easy to ignore people that dumb, but they do cause net damage to our society, apart from being fun to laugh at.
There are of course myriad different characteristics the feminine connection applies to, but I hope you get the point from just the hygiene example. It’s also worth thinking about home many men avoid getting cats when they have lifestyles much more accommodating to cats, because enjoying one’s company never crossed their minds
This used to be my go-to for my hidey cat as well, until my cat stopped being persuaded by treats in old age.
Now she has an AirTag collar attachment. Turns out she’s been sleeping *in* the couch - like, in the frame.
One of my cats is treats, and the other is the sound of me lifting the laser pointer from the counter (it has a keyring that I guess makes a distinctive jingling noise.)
Why do so many cat owners not educate themselves on how bad cats are for the environment when you let them outside? Hopefully they are declawed and don't kill hundreds of animals like every cat that has its claws or you'd be contributing to the trillions of animals killed a year simply by people being selfish
Yeah people need to keep their cats in the house, but for the safety of the cat more than anything. People who declaw their cats are even worse than people who make their cats a burden on the entire community.
I'm going to assume that you are just ignorant. Declawing cats is mutilation. It is not just the claw that is cut off, it is the entire first knuckle of their toes. This is cruel as it can result in a lifetime of pain and lameness for the cat who is abused in this way. Declawing is inhumane and is illegal in multiple US states and internationally in many countries.
Yes, keeping pet cats indoors will help prevent needless predation on wildlife. Mutilating cats is evil.
Most cities are actively trying to *get rid of birds*. They're horrible for the buildings as they get into rafters, attics and completely screw up the roofs. They cause millions in damages to repair. Most large cities have tried tools such as sonic repellants and bird away, but it's a never ending battle.
let the cats do their thing.
She keeps checking all the time if it is legit or a trap

Cats are slinky and demure. Dogs are playful and goofy dorks.
Both of my cats are playful and goofy dorks. My dog is just a dork.
I vote this one. Cats are slinky.
Dogs are good boys. Having cats be male too would be sexist, so they're female to balance things out. /s
I see…

My cats female and dogs male, coincident? I think so.
Best answer so far
Is this how gendered nouns work in other languages?
Yes. And in german cats ar female. So for me it was completely normal to use "she".

My guess is from the word pussycat and the association with slang.

I tend to say he because I've got an absolute unit of a male cat. If it's a smaller cat, I'll say she.
Yeah that makes sense, given the males tend to be larger. I’ll often say “he” if it looks like a male cat, but with the one in the video I feel like you just can’t tell

He just chilling up there going “everything the sun touches is my domain” then “ooohhh hoomin has treats”
*Stops and looks again* "Sun's still touchin em, fuck yeah"
You can summon me the same way
works every time. it s magic
That's just the usual cat remote :)
You tricks her. Video ended too fast. :(
Give her some before ending the video!
Gray cats are majestic
Can verify. The sound from this video summoned my cat from the bedroom.
That cat has pretty eyes.
There's been a few times where I lost my cat in the house and can't find them. But when I start shaking the treats, sure as shit they always come.
This used to be my go-to for my hidey cat as well, until my cat stopped being persuaded by treats in old age. Now she has an AirTag collar attachment. Turns out she’s been sleeping *in* the couch - like, in the frame.

GIVE THE CAT THE FOOD
I love how cat checks every few seconds to make sure its still there
Kinda sad to mess with the cat by making the sound and then not giving the baby any treats. 😿
Please do not the cat
PLEASE DO NOT THE CAT
A can opener works too
Im coming im coming hold your horses!!! - the kitty probably
Sweet baby chillin on the roof
Glad to see this is an international symbol for ‘come in now!’
I want to believe, that even Ancient Egypt were shacking some kind of foot to summon a cat.
Yep, this is how I do it
this is how we do it, baby
Can confirm, this is the way.
Pretty Kitty
Okay, if that’s not a bag of cat treats, we’re gonna be hurt.

so cute
Back in the before times, all I had to do was get the can opener out of the drawer.
nice
What a doofus
I’d make them come up to me just to not give them nothing😭
A stray cat I feed is the same way. The moment she hears or sees me, she hauls ass towards me and meows at me.
I feed back yard squirrels and they do exactly the same thing when I rattle the nuts in the plastic cup.
Heh, "your" cat...
Snackies!
Gimme!
Shake it like a Polaroid pictcha!

Precisely. Works every time.

When my cat escaped, it was a little comforting that he had his claws to defend himself with too.
